Characteristics of partially filled Helmholtz resonators

In this work we have developed a technique for the measurement of the resonance curve of Helmholtz resonators as a function of filling with beads and sands of different sizes, and water as the reference. Our measurements allowed us to observe very different behaviors of resonance frequencies and resonance half-widths as a function of the size of the sand grains and the beads. By comparing results for beads and water we were able to prove that the sound penetrates the interstitial space between the beads. This was confirmed by measurements of the resonance properties in resonators filled with spherical beads whose experimentally determined filling factor is close to the random filling factor of about 0.54. The similar behavior of the frequency and half-width of resonance of sand-filled resonators of three different sizes allowed us to suggest that sound penetrates the sand in the same way as it does the beads.

Direct and inverse measurement of thin films magnetostriction

Two techniques of measurements of thin film magnetostriction are compared: direct, when changes of the substrate curvature caused by the film magnetization are controlled, and inverse ("indirect"), when the modification of the magnetic anisotropy induced by the substrate deformation (usually bending) is measured. We demonstrate how both the elastic strength of the substrate and the effective magneto-mechanical coupling between the substrate deformation and magnetic anisotropy of the film depend on different conditions of bending. Equations to be used for magnetostriction value determination in typical cases are given and critical parameters for the corresponding approximations are identified.

Magnetostrictive hysteresis of TbCo/CoFe multilayers and magnetic domains

Magnetic and magnetostrictive hysteresis loops of TbCo/CoFe multilayers under field applied along the hard magnetization axis are studied using vectorial magnetization measurements, optical deflectometry and magneto optical Kerr microscopy. Even a very small angle misalignment between hard axis and magnetic field direction is shown to drastically change the shape of magnetization and magnetostrictive torsion hysteresis loops. Two kinds of magnetic domains are revealed during the magnetization: big regions with opposite rotation of spontaneous magnetization vector and spontaneous magnetic domains which appear in a narrow field interval and provide an inversion of this rotation. We show that the details of the hysteresis loops of our exchange-coupled films can be described using the classical model of homogeneous magnetization rotation of single uniaxial films and the configuration of observed domains. The understanding of these features is crucial for applications (for MEMS or microactuators) which benefit from the greatly enhanced sensitivity near the point of magnetic saturation at the transverse applied field.

First Order Transition of the Vortex Lattice in Disordered Bi-2212 Crystals

Using differential magneto-optical imaging, we address the question of mesoscopic inhomogeneity in underdoped Bi-2212 single crystals. Among other features, it is shown that an anomalous temperature dependence of the penetration field and of the first order transition (FOT) field of the vortex lattice in such crystals can be understood as arising from inhomogeneity. The effect of chemical inhomogeneity and pinning on flux penetration and the FOT is discussed.

"Vortex-melting front" in thin superconductors with pinning

Magneto-optical observations of a second flux front, which occurs at the second peak in the magnetization of Bi_2 Sr_2 CaCu_2 O_x single crystals related to the known first order ``vortex-lattice melting'', are reconsidered. We show that, in thin samples, electrodynamics necessarily leads to an extended region in which the magnetic induction adopts a nearly constant value close to that at which the phase transition occurs at thermal equilibrium. In this region a dynamical phase mixture of vortex ``solid'' and ``liquid'' should exist. Interestingly, the observed second flux front does not mark the ``melting'' front, as it was naively interpreted earlier, but indicates the disappearance of the last ``solid droplets''.

Strong Pinning in High Temperature Superconductors

Detailed measurements of the critical current density jc of YBa2Cu3O7 films grown by pulsed laser deposition reveal the increase of jc as function of the filmthickness. Both this thickness dependence and the field dependence of the critical current are consistently described using a generalization of the theory of strong pinning of Ovchinnikov and Ivlev [Phys. Rev. B 43, 8024 (1991)]. From the model, we deduce values of the defect density (10^21 m^-3) and the elementary pinning force, which are in good agreement with the generally accepted values for Y2O3-inclusions. In the absence of clear evidence that the critical current is determined by linear defects or modulations of the film thickness, our model provides an alternative explanation for the rather universal field dependence of the critical current density found in YBa2Cu3O7 films deposited by different methods.

Magnetic relaxation in the "Bragg-glass" phase in BSCCO

Magnetic relaxation in the Bragg-glass phase of overdoped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 crystals was investigated using time-resolved magneto-optical visualisation of the flux distribution. This has permitted us to extract the current-voltage characteristic, which can be well described by a power-law, although fits to a stretched exponential E \sim \exp(- j_{c} / j)^μ with 0.3 < μ< 0.8 are possible at long times in excess of 100 s.

Magnetization Decay due to Vortex Phase Boundary Motion in BSCCO

We identify a new regime of decay of the irreversible magnetization in clean Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ crystals, at induction values close to the ``second peak field'' at which the bulk critical current density steeply increases. A time window is identified during which the decay of the induction is controlled by the slow propagation of the phase transformation front across the sample.

Supercooling of the high field vortex phase in single crystalline BSCCO

Time resolved magneto-optical images show hysteresis associated with the transition at the so-called ``second magnetization peak'' at B_sp in single-crystalline Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+d. By rapid quenching of the high-field phase, it can be made to persist metastably in the sample down to fields that are nearly half B_sp.

Melting of regular and decoupled vortex lattices in BSCCO crystals

The angular dependence of the first-order phase transition (FOT) in the vortex lattice in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ crystals was investigated by a low frequency AC shielding technique (with the AC field $\parallel c$), in which the static-field component parallel to $c$- ($H_{\perp}$) was varied with the in-plane field $H_{\parallel}$ held constant. The linear decrease of the FOT field $H_{\perp}^{FOT}$ with increasing $H_{\parallel}$ ends at a temperature--dependent critical value of $H_{\parallel}$. A new transition, marked by the abrupt drop of the $ab$-plane shielding current, appears at this point. We draw a new phase diagram with $H_{\parallel}$ and $H_{\perp}$ field components as coordinates; this features at least two distinct regions in the vortex solid phase, that are determined by the different interplay between the pancake vortex-- and Josephson vortex lattice.

Supercooling of the disordered vortex lattice in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+d

Time-resolved local induction measurements near to the vortex lattice order-disorder transition in optimally doped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals shows that the high-field, disordered phase can be quenched to fields as low as half the transition field. Over an important range of fields, the electrodynamical behavior of the vortex system is governed by the co-existence of the two phases in the sample. We interpret the results in terms of supercooling of the high-field phase and the possible first order nature of the order-disorder transition at the ``second peak''.

Do columnar defects produce bulk pinning?

From magneto-optical imaging performed on heavy-ion irradiated YBaCuO single crystals, it is found that at fields and temperatures where strong single vortex pinning by individual irradiation-induced amorphous columnar defects is to be expected, vortex motion is limited by the nucleation of vortex kinks at the specimen surface rather than by half-loop nucleation in the bulk. In the material bulk, vortex motion occurs through (easy) kink sliding. Depinning in the bulk determines the screening current only at fields comparable to or larger than the matching field, at which the majority of moving vortices is not trapped by an ion track.
