Vortex-antivortex nucleation in magnetically nanotextured superconductors: Magnetic-field-driven and thermal scenarios

Within the Ginzburg-Landau formalism, we predict two novel mechanisms of vortex-antivortex nucleation in a magnetically nanostructured superconductor. Although counterintuitive, nucleation of vortex-antivortex pairs can be activated in a superconducting (SC) film covered by arrays of submicron ferromagnets (FMs) when exposed to an external homogeneous magnetic field. In another scenario, we predict the thermal induction of vortex-antivortex configurations in SC/FM samples. This phenomenon leads to a new type of Little-Parks oscillations of the FM magnetization-temperature phase boundary of the superconducting film.

Field-enhanced critical parameters in magnetically nanostructured superconductors

Within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory, we demonstrate the enhancement of superconductivity in a superconducting film, when nanostructured by a lattice of magnetic particles. Arrays of out-of-plane magnetized dots (MDs) extend the critical magnetic field and critical current the sample can sustain, due to the interaction of the vortex-antivortex pairs and surrounding supercurrents induced by the dots and the external flux lines. Depending on the stability of the vortex-antivortex lattice, a peak in the Hext-T boundary is found for applied integer and rational matching fields, which agrees with recent experiments [Lange et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 197006 (2003)]. Due to compensation of MDs- and Hext-induced currents, we predict the field-shifted jc-Hext characteristics, as was actually realized in previous experiment but not commented on [Morgan and Ketterson, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 3614 (1998)].

Magnetically induced splitting of a giant vortex state in a mesoscopic superconducting disk

The nucleation of superconductivity in a superconducting disk with a Co/Pt magnetic triangle was studied. We demonstrate that when the applied magnetic field is parallel to the magnetization of the triangle, the giant vortex state of vorticity three splits into three individual F0-vortices, due to a pronounced influence of the C3 symmetry of the magnetic triangle. As a result of a strong pinning of the three vortices by the triangle, their configuration remains stable in a broad range of applied magnetic fields. For sufficiently high fields, F0-vortices merge and the nucleation occurs through the giant vortex state. The theoretical analysis of this novel reentrant behaviour at the phase boundary, obtained within the Ginzburg - Landau formalism, is in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

The interaction between a superconducting vortex and an out-of-plane magnetized ferromagnetic disk: influence of the magnet geometry

The interaction between a superconducting vortex in a type II superconducting film (SC) and a ferromagnet (FM) with out-of-plane magnetization is investigated theoretically within the London approximation. The dependence of the interaction energy on the FM-vortex distance, film thickness and different geometries of the magnetic structures: disk, annulus(ring), square and triangle are calculated. Analytic expressions and vectorplots of the current induced in the SC due to the presence of the FM are presented. For a FM disk with a cavity, we show that different local minima for the vortex position are possible, enabling the system to be suitable to act as a qubit. For FMs with sharp edges, like e.g. for squares and triangles, the vortex prefers to enter its equilibrium position along the corners of the magnet.

Superconducting Wigner Vortex Molecule near a Magnetic Disk

Within the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, we investigate the vortex structure in a superconducting thin film with a ferromagnetic disk on top of it. Antivortices are stabilized in shells around a central core of vortices (or a giant-vortex) with size-magnetization controlled ``magic numbers''. An equilibrium vortex phase diagram is constructed. The transition between the different vortex phases occurs through the creation of a vortex-antivortex pair under the magnetic disk edge.

Magnetic Pinning of Vortices in a Superconducting Film: The (anti)vortex-magnetic dipole interaction energy in the London approximation

The interaction between a superconducting vortex or antivortex in a superconducting film and a magnetic dipole with in- or out-of-plane magnetization is investigated within the London approximation. The dependence of the interaction energy on the dipole-vortex distance and the film thickness is studied and analytical results are obtained in limiting cases. We show how the short range interaction with the magnetic dipole makes the co-existence of vortices and antivortices possible. Different configurations with vortices and antivortices are investigated.

Multi-vortex states of a thin superconducting disk in a step-like external magnetic field

The vortex states in a thin mesoscopic disk are investigated within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory in the presence of a step-like external magnetic field with zero average which could model the field resulting from a ferromagnetic disk or a current carrying loop. The regions of existence of the multi-vortex state and the giant vortex state are found. We analyzed the phase transitions between them and found regions in which ring-shaped vortices contribute. Furthermore, we found a vortex state consisting of a central giant vortex surrounded by a collection of anti-vortices that are located in a ring around this giant vortex.

Vortex structure of thin mesoscopic disks in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field

The vortex states in a thin mesoscopic disk are investigated within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory in the presence of different ''model'' magnetic field profiles with zero average field which may result from a ferromagnetic disk or circulating currents in a loop near the superconductor. We calculated the dependences of both the ground and metastable states on the magnitude and shape of the magnetic field profile for different values of the order parameter angular moment, i.e. the vorticity. The regions of existence of the multi-vortex state and the giant vortex state are found. We analysed the phase transitions between these states and studied the contribution from ring-shaped vortices. A new transition between different multi-vortex configurations as the ground state is found. Furthermore, we found a vortex state consisting of a central giant vortex surrounded by a collection of anti-vortices which are located in a ring around this giant vortex. The limit to a disk with an infinite radius, i.e. a film, will also be discussed. We also extended our results to ''real'' magnetic field profiles and to the case in which an external homogeneous magnetic field is present.
