Spin control in semiconductor quantum wires

We show that spin-flip rotation in a semiconductor quantum wire, caused by the Rashba and the Dresselhaus interactions (both of arbitrary strengths), can be suppressed by dint of an in-plane magnetic field. We found a new type of symmetry, which arises at a particular set of intensity and orientation of the magnetic field and explains this suppression. Based on our findings, we propose a transport experiment to measure the strengths of the Rashba and the Dresselhaus interactions.

Quantum dots based on spin properties of semiconductor heterostructures

The possibility of a novel type of semiconductor quantum dots obtained by spatially modulating the spin-orbit coupling intensity in III-V heterostructures is discussed. Using the effective mass model we predict confined one-electron states having peculiar spin properties. Furthermore, from mean field calculations (local-spin-density and Hartree-Fock) we find that even two electrons could form a bound state in these dots.

Collective oscillations in quantum rings: a broken symmetry case

We present calculations within density functional theory of the ground state and collective electronic oscillations in small two-dimensional quantum rings. No spatial symmetries are imposed to the solutions and, as in a recent contribution, a transition to a broken symmetry solution in the intrinsic reference frame for an increasingly narrow ring is found. The oscillations are addressed by using real-time simulation. Conspicuous effects of the broken symmetry solution on the spectra are pointed out.
