Stochastic resonance in the driven Ising model on small-world networks

We investigate the stochastic resonance phenomena in the field-driven Ising model on small-world networks. The response of the magnetization to an oscillating magnetic field is examined by means of Monte Carlo dynamic simulations, with the rewiring probability varied. At any finite value of the rewiring probability, the system is found to undergo a dynamic phase transition at a finite temperature, giving rise to double resonance peaks. While the peak in the ferromagnetic phase grows with the rewiring probability, that in the paramagnetic phase tends to reduce, indicating opposite effects of the long-range interactions on the resonance in the two phases.

Dynamic transitions and resonances in Josephson-junction arrays under oscillating magnetic fields

We investigate dynamic transitions and stochastic resonance phenomena in two-dimensional fully frustrated Josephson-junction arrays driven by staggered oscillating magnetic fields. As the temperature is lowered, the dynamic order parameter, defined to be the average staggered magnetization, is observed to acquire nonzero values. The resulting transition is found to belong to the same universality as the equilibrium Z_2 transition for small driving amplitudes while large driving fields appear to induce deviation from the universality class. The transition is also manifested by the stochastic resonance peak of the signal-to-noise ratio, which develops above the transition temperature.

Comment on "Ising model on a small world network"

In the recent study of the Ising model on a small-world network by A. Pȩkalski [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 64}, 057104 (2001)], a surprisingly small value of the critical exponent $β\approx 0.0001$ has been obtained for the temperature dependence of the magnetization. We perform extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the same model and conclude, via the standard finite-size scaling of various quantities, that the phase transition in the model is of the mean-field nature, in contrast to the work by A. Pȩkalski but in accord with other existing studies.

Phase ordering on small-world networks with nearest-neighbor edges

We investigate global phase coherence in a system of coupled oscillators on a small-world networks constructed from a ring with nearest-neighbor edges. The effects of both thermal noise and quenched randomness on phase ordering are examined and compared with the global coherence in the corresponding \xy model without quenched randomness. It is found that in the appropriate regime phase ordering emerges at finite temperatures, even for a tiny fraction of shortcuts. Nature of the phase transition is also discussed.

Spontaneous phase oscillation induced by inertia and time delay

We consider a system of coupled oscillators with finite inertia and time-delayed interaction, and investigate the interplay between inertia and delay both analytically and numerically. The phase velocity of the system is examined; revealed in numerical simulations is emergence of spontaneous phase oscillation without external driving, which turns out to be in good agreement with analytical results derived in the strong-coupling limit. Such self-oscillation is found to suppress synchronization and its frequency is observed to decrease with inertia and delay. We obtain the phase diagram, which displays oscillatory and stationary phases in the appropriate regions of the parameters.

Synchronization on small-world networks

We investigate collective synchronization in a system of coupled oscillators on small-world networks. The order parameters which measure synchronization of phases and frequencies are introduced and analyzed by means of dynamic simulations and finite-size scaling. Phase synchronization is observed to emerge in the presence of even a tiny fraction $P$ of shortcuts and to display saturated behavior for $P \gtrsim 0.5$. This indicates that the same synchronizability as the random network (P=1) can be achieved with relatively small number of shortcuts. The transient behavior of the synchronization, obtained from the measurement of the relaxation time, is also discussed.

XY model in small-world networks

The phase transition in the XY model on one-dimensional small-world networks is investigated by means of Monte-Carlo simulations. It is found that long-range order is present at finite temperatures, even for very small values of the rewiring probability, suggesting a finite-temperature transition for any nonzero rewiring probability. Nature of the phase transition is discussed in comparison with the globally-coupled XY model.

Double stochastic resonance peaks in systems with dynamic phase transitions

To probe the connection between the dynamic phase transition and stochastic resonance, we study the mean-field kinetic Ising model and the two-dimensional Josephson-junction array in the presence of appropriate oscillating magnetic fields. Observed in both systems are {\it double} stochastic resonance peaks, one below and the other above the dynamic transition temperature, the appearance of which is argued to be a generic property of the system with a continuous dynamic phase transition. In particular, the frequency matching condition around the dynamic phase transition between the external drive frequency and the internal characteristic frequency of the system is identified as the origin of such double peaks.

Topological interpretation of subharmonic mode locking in coupled oscillators with inertia

A topological argument is constructed and applied to explain subharmonic mode locking in a system of coupled oscillators with inertia. Via a series of transformations, the system is shown to be described by a classical XY model with periodic bond angles, which is in turn mapped onto a tight-binding particle in a periodic gauge field. It is then revealed that subharmonic quantization of the average phase velocity follows as a manifestation of topological invariance. Ubiquity of multistability and associated hysteresis are also pointed out.

Topological quantization and degeneracy in Josephson-junction arrays

We consider the conductivity quantization in two-dimensional arrays of mesoscopic Josephson junctions, and examine the associated degeneracy in various regimes of the system. The filling factor of the system may be controlled by the gate voltage as well as the magnetic field, and its appropriate values for quantization is obtained by employing the Jain hierarchy scheme both in the charge description and in the vortex description. The duality between the two descriptions then suggests the possibility that the system undergoes a change in degeneracy while the quantized conductivity remains fixed.

Spatiotemporal Stochastic Resonance in Fully Frustrated Josephson Ladders

We consider a Josephson-junction ladder in an external magnetic field with half flux quantum per plaquette. When driven by external currents, periodic in time and staggered in space, such a fully frustrated system is found to display spatiotemporal stochastic resonance under the influence of thermal noise. Such resonance behavior is investigated both numerically and analytically, which reveals significant effects of anisotropy and yields rich physics.

Renormalization-group study of gate charge effects in Josephson-junction chains

We study the quantum phase transition in a chain of superconducting grains, coupled by Josephson junctions, with emphasis on the effects of gate charges induced on the grains. At zero temperature the system is mapped onto a two-dimensional classical Coulomb gas, where the gate charge plays the role of an imaginary electric field. Such a field is found relevant in the renormalization-group transformation and to change the nature of the superconductor-insulator transition present in the system, tending to suppress quantum fluctuations and helping establish superconductivity. On the basis of this observation, we propose the zero-temperature phase diagram on the plane of the gate charge and the energy ratio.

Intrinsic finite-size effects in the two-dimensional XY model with irrational frustration

This study investigates in detail the finite-size scaling of the two-dimensional irrationally frustrated XY model. By means of Monte Carlo simulations with entropic sampling, we examine the size dependence of the specific heat, and find remarkable deviation from the conventional finite-size scaling theory, which reveals novel intrinsic finite-size effects. Relaxation dynamics of the system is also considered, and correspondingly, finite-size scaling of the relaxation time is examined, again giving evidence for the intrinsic finite-size effects and suggesting a zero-temperature glass transition.

Phase synchronization and noise-induced resonance in systems of coupled oscillators

We study synchronization and noise-induced resonance phenomena in systems of globally coupled oscillators, each possessing finite inertia. The behavior of the order parameter, which measures collective synchronization of the system, is investigated as the noise level and the coupling strength are varied, and hysteretic behavior is manifested. The power spectrum of the phase velocity is also examined and the quality factor as well as the response function is obtained to reveal noise-induced resonance behavior.

Boundary Effects on Dynamic Behavior of Josephson-Junction Arrays

The boundary effects on the current-voltage characteristics in two-dimensional arrays of resistively shunted Josephson junctions are examined. In particular, we consider both the conventional boundary conditions (CBC) and the fluctuating twist boundary conditions (FTBC), and make comparison of the obtained results. It is observed that the CBC, which have been widely adopted in existing simulations, may give a problem in scaling, arising from rather large boundary effects; the FTBC in general turn out to be effective in reducing the finite-size effects, yielding results with good scaling behavior. To resolve the discrepancy between the two boundary conditions, we propose that the proper scaling in the CBC should be performed with the boundary data discarded: This is shown to give results which indeed scale well and are the same as those from the FTBC.

Synchronization in a System of Globally Coupled Oscillators with Time Delay

We study the synchronization phenomena in a system of globally coupled oscillators with time delay in the coupling. The self-consistency equations for the order parameter are derived, which depend explicitly on the amount of delay. Analysis of these equations reveals that the system in general exhibits discontinuous transitions in addition to the usual continuous transition, between the incoherent state and a multitude of coherent states with different synchronization frequencies. In particular, the phase diagram is obtained on the plane of the coupling strength and the delay time, and ubiquity of multistability as well as suppression of the synchronization frequency is manifested. Numerical simulations are also performed to give consistent results.

Lattice effects on the current-voltage characteristics of superconducting arrays

The lattice effects on the current-voltage characteristics of two-dimensional arrays of resistively shunted Josephson junctions are investigated. The lattice potential energies due to the discrete lattice structure are calculated for several geometries and directions of current injection. We compare the energy barrier for vortex-pair unbinding with the lattice pinning potential, which shows that lattice effects are negligible in the low-current limit as well as in the high-current limit. At intermediate currents, on the other hand, the lattice potential becomes comparable to the barrier height and the lattice effects may be observed in the current-voltage characteristics.

Synchronization and resonance in a driven system of coupled oscillators

We study the noise effects in a driven system of globally coupled oscillators, with particular attention to the interplay between driving and noise. The self-consistency equation for the order parameter, which measures the collective synchronization of the system, is derived; it is found that the total order parameter decreases monotonically with noise, indicating overall suppression of synchronization. Still, for large coupling strengths, there exists an optimal noise level at which the periodic (ac) component of the order parameter reaches its maximum. The response of the phase velocity is also examined and found to display resonance behavior.
