Dynamic transition and Shapiro-step melting in a frustrated Josephson-junction array

We consider a two-dimensional fully frustrated Josephson-junction array driven by combined direct and alternating currents. Interplay between the mode locking phenomenon, manifested by giant Shapiro steps in the current-voltage characteristics, and the dynamic phase transition is investigated at finite temperatures. Melting of Shapiro steps due to thermal fluctuations is shown to be accompanied by the dynamic phase transition, the universality class of which is also discussed.

Dynamic model of fiber bundles

A realistic continuous-time dynamics for fiber bundles is introduced and studied both analytically and numerically. The equation of motion reproduces known stationary-state results in the deterministic limit while the system under non-vanishing stress always breaks down in the presence of noise. Revealed in particular is the characteristic time evolution that the system tends to resist the stress for considerable time, followed by sudden complete rupture. The critical stress beyond which the complete rupture emerges is also obtained.

Factors that predict better synchronizability on complex networks

While shorter characteristic path length has in general been believed to enhance synchronizability of a coupled oscillator system on a complex network, the suppressing tendency of the heterogeneity of the degree distribution, even for shorter characteristic path length, has also been reported. To see this, we investigate the effects of various factors such as the degree, characteristic path length, heterogeneity, and betweenness centrality on synchronization, and find a consistent trend between the synchronization and the betweenness centrality. The betweenness centrality is thus proposed as a good indicator for synchronizability.

Phase Transitions in Models for Coupled Charge-Density Waves

Various phase transitions in models for coupled charge-density waves are investigated by means of the $ε$-expansion, mean-field theory, and Monte Carlo simulations. At zero temperature the effective action for the system with appropriate commensurability effects is mapped onto the three- or four-dimensional \XY model, depending on spatiotemporal fluctuations, under the corresponding symmetry-breaking fields. It is revealed that the three- and four-dimensional systems display a single transition between the clock order (with broken Z$_M$ symmetry) and disorder. The nature of the phase transition depends crucially on the commensurability factor $M$: For $M \ge 4$, in particular, the transition belongs to the same university class as the \XY model. On the other hand, in the presence of misfit causing frustration in the charge-density wave, the inter-chain coupling is observed to favor either the commensurate state or the incommensurate state depending on the initial configuration; this gives rise to hysteresis around the commensurate-incommensurate transition. Boundaries separating such phases with different symmetries are obtained in the parameter space consisting of the temperature, symmetry-breaking field, fluctuation strength, inter-chain coupling, and misfit.

Collective phase synchronization in locally-coupled limit-cycle oscillators

We study collective behavior of locally-coupled limit-cycle oscillators with scattered intrinsic frequencies on $d$-dimensional lattices. A linear analysis shows that the system should be always desynchronized up to $d=4$. On the other hand, numerical investigation for $d= 5$ and 6 reveals the emergence of the synchronized (ordered) phase via a continuous transition from the fully random desynchronized phase. This demonstrates that the lower critical dimension for the phase synchronization in this system is $d_{l}=4$

Correspondences and Quantum Description of Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher Effects

We establish systematic consolidation of the Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher effects including their scalar counterparts. Their formal correspondences in acquiring topological phases are revealed on the basis of the gauge symmetry in non-simply connected spaces and the adiabatic condition for the state of magnetic dipoles. In addition, investigation of basic two-body interactions between an electric charge and a magnetic dipole clarifies their appropriate relative motions and discloses physical interrelations between the effects. Based on the two-body interaction, we also construct an exact microscopic description of the Aharonov-Bohm effect, where all the elements are treated on equal footing, i.e., magnetic dipoles are described quantum-mechanically and electromagnetic fields are quantized. This microscopic analysis not only confirms the conventional (semiclassical) results and the topological nature but also allows one to explore the fluctuation effects due to the precession of the magnetic dipoles with the adiabatic condition relaxed.

Stability and ensemble inequivalence in a globally coupled system

We consider a system of globally coupled rotors, described by a set of Langevin equations, and examine stability of the incoherent phase. The corresponding Fokker-Planck equation, providing a unified description of microcanonical and canonical ensembles, bears a few solutions, depending upon the ensemble. It is found that the stability of each solution varies differently with the temperature, revealing the inequivalence between the two ensembles. This also suggests a physical explanation of the quasi-stationarity observed in recent numerical results.

Quantum Phase Transitions and Persistent Currents in Josephson-Junction Ladders

In this work we study quantum phase transitions and persistent currents in capacitively coupled one-dimensional Josephson-junction arrays. We will focus particularly on the roles of exciton-like pairs in the strong coupling limit in the presence of external gate charges and magnetic fluxes. We use the numerical density-matrix renormalization group method for the study in the full range of values of gate charge and magnetic flux. To clarify the various effects, we report the pair correlation functions and the exciton densities as welll as the persistent current.

Quantum and classical diffusion in small-world networks

We study numerically quantum diffusion of a particle on small-world networks by integrating the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with a localized initial state. The participation ratio, which corresponds to the number of visited sites in the case of classical diffusion, as a function of time is measured and the corresponding diffusion time $τ$ is computed. In a local regular network, i.e., in the network with the rewiring probability $p=0$, the diffusion time depends on the network size $N$ as $τ\sim N$, while the behavior $τ\sim \log N$ is observed as $p$ becomes finite. Such fast diffusion of a particle on a complex network suggests that the small-world transition is also the fast-world transition from a dynamic point of view. The classical diffusion behavior is also studied and compared with the quantum behavior.

Phase transition in the Ising model on a small-world network with distance-dependent interactions

We study the collective behavior of an Ising system on a small-world network with the interaction $J(r) \propto r^{-α}$, where $r$ represents the Euclidean distance between two nodes. In the case of $α= 0$ corresponding to the uniform interaction, the system is known to possess a phase transition of the mean-field nature, while the system with the short-range interaction $(α\to\infty)$ does not exhibit long-range order at any finite temperature. Monte Carlo simulations are performed at various values of $α$, and the critical value $α_c$ beyond which the long-range order does not emerge is estimated to be zero. Thus concluded is the absence of a phase transition in the system with the algebraically decaying interaction $r^{-α}$ for any nonzero positive value of $α$.

Frequency resonance in Josephson-junction arrays under strong driving

We study resonance behavior of a two-dimensional fully frustrated Josephson-junction array driven by high alternating currents. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is examined as the frequency of the driving current is varied; revealed is a certain frequency range where the SNR is enhanced. Such resonance behavior is explained by considering the dynamic order parameter at zero temperature. We also compute the work, which corresponds to the Ohmic dissipation of the energy due to external currents, and discuss its possibility as a measure of stochastic resonance.

Netons: Vibrations of Complex Networks

We consider atoms interacting each other through the topological structure of a complex network and investigate lattice vibrations of the system, the quanta of which we call {\em netons} for convenience. The density of neton levels, obtained numerically, reveals that unlike a local regular lattice, the system develops a gap of a finite width, manifesting extreme rigidity of the network structure at low energies. Two different network models, the small-world network and the scale-free network, are compared: The characteristic structure of the former is described by an additional peak in the level density whereas a power-law tail is observed in the latter, indicating excitability of netons at arbitrarily high energies. The gap width is also found to vanish in the small-world network when the connection range $r = 1$.

Optimal Size of a Complex Network

We investigate the response behavior of an Ising system, driven by an oscillating field, on a small-world network, with particular attention to the effects of the system size. The responses of the magnetization to the driving field are probed by means of Monte Carlo dynamic simulations with the rewiring probability varied. It is found that at low and high temperatures the occupancy ratio, measuring how many spins follow the driving field, behaves monotonically with the system size. At intermediate temperatures, on the other hand, the occupancy ratio first grows and then reduces as the size is increased, displaying a resonance-like peak at a finite value of the system size. In all cases, further increase of the size eventually leads to saturation to finite values; the size at which saturation emerges is observed to depend on the temperature, similarly to the correlation length of the system.

Relaxation and Coarsening Dynamics in Superconducting Arrays

We investigate the nonequilibrium coarsening dynamics in two-dimensional overdamped superconducting arrays under zero external current, where ohmic dissipation occurs on junctions between superconducting islands through uniform resistance. The nonequilibrium relaxation of the unfrustrated array and also of the fully frustrated array, quenched to low temperature ordered states or quasi-ordered ones, is dominated by characteristic features of coarsening processes via decay of point and line defects, respectively. In the case of unfrustrated arrays, it is argued that due to finiteness of the friction constant for a vortex (in the limit of large spatial extent of the vortex), the typical length scale grows as $\ell_s \sim t^{1/2}$ accompanied by the number of point vortices decaying as $N_v \sim 1/t $. This is in contrast with the case that dominant dissipation occurs between each island and the substrate, where the friction constant diverges logarithmically and the length scale exhibits diffusive growth with a logarithmic correction term. We perform extensive numerical simulations, to obtain results in reasonable agreement. In the case of fully frustrated arrays, the domain growth of Ising-like chiral order exhibits the low-temperature behavior $\ell_q \sim t^{1/z_q}$, with the growth exponent $1/z_q$ apparently showing a strong temperature dependence in the low-temperature limit.

Autonomous stochastic resonance in fully frustrated Josephson-junction ladders

We investigate autonomous stochastic resonance in fully frustrated Josephson-junction ladders, which are driven by uniform constant currents. At zero temperature large currents induce oscillations between the two ground states, while for small currents the lattice potential forces the system to remain in one of the two states. At finite temperatures, on the other hand, oscillations between the two states develop even below the critical current; the signal-to-noise ratio is found to display array-enhanced stochastic resonance. It is suggested that such behavior may be observed experimentally through the measurement of the staggered voltage.

Dynamic instabilities induced by asymmetric influence: Prisoners' dilemma game on small-world networks

A two-dimensional small-world type network, subject to spatial prisoners' dilemma dynamics and containing an influential node defined as a special node with a finite density of directed random links to the other nodes in the network, is numerically investigated. It is shown that the degree of cooperation does not remain at a steady state level but displays a punctuated equilibrium type behavior manifested by the existence of sudden breakdowns of cooperation. The breakdown of cooperation is linked to an imitation of a successful selfish strategy of the influential node. It is also found that while the breakdown of cooperation occurs suddenly, the recovery of it requires longer time. This recovery time may, depending on the degree of steady state cooperation, either increase or decrease with an increasing number of long range connections.

Quantum and frustration effects on fluctuations of the inverse compressibility in two-dimensional Coulomb glasses

We consider interacting electrons in a two-dimensional quantum Coulomb glass and investigate by means of the Hartree-Fock approximation the combined effects of the electron-electron interaction and the transverse magnetic field on fluctuations of the inverse compressibility. Preceding systematic study of the system in the absence of the magnetic field identifies the source of the fluctuations, interplay of disorder and interaction, and effects of hopping. Revealed in sufficiently clean samples with strong interactions is an unusual right-biased distribution of the inverse compressibility, which is neither of the Gaussian nor of the Wigner-Dyson type. While in most cases weak magnetic fields tend to suppress fluctuations, in relatively clean samples with weak interactions fluctuations are found to grow with the magnetic field. This is attributed to the localization properties of the electron states, which may be measured by the participation ratio and the inverse participation number. It is also observed that at the frustration where the Fermi level is degenerate, localization or modulation of electrons is enhanced, raising fluctuations. Strong frustration in general suppresses effects of the interaction on the inverse compressibility and on the configuration of electrons.

Dynamic transition and resonance in current-driven arrays of Josephson junctions

We consider a two-dimensional fully frustrated Josephson-junction array, which is driven uniformly by oscillating currents. As the temperature is lowered, there emerges a dynamic phase transition to an ordered state with nonzero dynamic order parameter for small currents. The transition temperature decreases monotonically with the driving amplitude, approaching zero at a certain critical value of the amplitude. Above the critical value, the disordered phase and the dynamically ordered phase are observed to appear alternatively. The characteristic stochastic resonance behavior of the system is also examined, which reveals that the resonance behavior of odd and even harmonics can be different according to the zero-temperature state.
