On the possibility to consider fullerene shell C60 as a conducting sphere

Correctness of the model representing the fullerene shell C60 as a conducting sphere has been analyzed. The static and dynamical polarizabilities of the molecule C60 have been calculated on the basis of experimental data on the photo-absorption cross- section of fullerene. It has been shown that the real C60 in the static electric field behaves most likely as a set of separate carbon atoms rather than as a conducting sphere and its static polarizability exceeds by more than two times that of conducting sphere.

Two-electron photoionization of endohedral atoms

Using $He@C_{60}$ as an example, we demonstrate that static potential of the fullerene core essentially alters the cross section of the two-electron ionization differential in one-electron energy $dσ^{++}(ω)/dε$. We found that at high photon energy prominent oscillations appear in it due to reflection of the second, slow electron wave on the $% C_{60}$ shell, which "dies out" at relatively high $ε$ values, of about 2$÷$3 two-electron ionization potentials. The results were presented for ratios $R_{C_{60}}(ω,ε)\equiv dσ^{++}(ω,ε)/dσ^{a++}(ω,ε)$, where $dσ^{a++}(ω,ε)/dε$ is the two-electron differential photoionization cross section. We have calculated the ratio $R_{i,ful}= σ_{i} ^{++}(ω)/σ_{i}^{a++}(ω)$, that accounts for reflection of both photoelectrons by the $C_{60}$ shell. We have calculated also the value of two-electron photoionization cross section $σ^{++}(ω)$ and found that this value is close to that of an isolated $He$ atom.

On the vacancy decay in endohedral atoms

It is demonstrated that the fullerene shell affects dramatically the radiative and Auger vacancy decay of an endohedral atom A@C60. The collectivized electrons of the C60 shell add new possibilities for radiative and non-radiative decays similar to that in ordinary atoms where initial and final state vacancies almost always belong to different subshells. It is shown that the smallness of the atomic shell radii as compared to that of the fullerenes shell provides an opportunity to derive the simple formulas for the probabilities of the electron transitions. It is shown that the radiative and Auger (or Koster-Kronig) widths of a vacancy decay due to electron transition in the atom A in A@C60 acquire an additional factors that can be expressed via the polarizability of the C60 at transition energy. It is demonstrated that due to opening of the non-radiative decay channel for vacancies in subvalent subshells the decay probability increases by five -- six orders of magnitude.

On the modification of the photoionization of subvalent subshells in endohedral noble gas atoms

It is demonstrated that outer and inner electron shells, including that formed by collectivized electrons of the fullerene C60, affects dramatically the cross section of the subvalent ns-subshells of the noble gas endohedral atoms A@C60. The calculations are performed within the framework of a very simple, so-called "orange skin", model that makes it possible, in spite of its simplicity, to take into account the modification of the ns-subshell due to its interaction with inner and outer atomic shells, as well as with the collectivized electrons of the C60. As a concrete example, we consider the Xe 5s electrons completely collectivized by the powerful action of the Xe close and remote multi-electron neighboring shells.

Atomic Bremsstrahlung: retrospectives, current status and perspectives

We describe here the Atomic bremsstrahlung - emission of continuous spectrum electromagnetic radiation, which is generated in collisions of particles that have internal deformable structure that includes positively and negatively charged constituents. The deformation of one of or both colliding partners induces multiple, mainly dipole, time-dependent electrical moments that become a source of radiation. The history of Atomic bremsstrahlung invention is presented and it's unusual in comparison to ordinary bremsstrahlung properties are discussed. As examples, fast electron - atom, non-relativistic and relativistic collisions are considered. Attention is given to ion - atom and atom - atom collisions. Specifics of elastic and inelastic (i.e. radiation accompanied by destruction of collision partners) Atomic bremsstrahlung will be mentioned. Attention will be given to possible manifestation of Atomic bremsstrahlung in Nature and in some exotic systems, for instance scattering of electrons upon muonic hydrogen. Some cooperative effects connected to Atomic bremsstrahlung will be considered. New classical schemes similar to Atomic bremsstrahlung will be presented.

Wave Functions of Heliumlike Systems in Limiting Regions

We find approximate analytical presentation of the solutions $Ψ(r_1, r_2, r_{12})$ of Schrödinger equation for two-electron system bound by the nucleus, in the space region $r_{1,2}=0$ and $r_{12}=0$ that are of great importance for a number of physical processes. The presentation is based on the well known behavior of $Ψ(r_1, r_2, r_{12})$ near the singulartriple coalescence point. The approximate functions are compared to the locally correct ones obtained earlier by the Correlation Function Hyperspherical Harmonic (CFHH) method for helium atom, light heliumlike ions and for the negative ion of hydrogen $H^-$. The functions are shown to determine a natural basis for the expansion of CFHH functions in the considered space region. We demonstrate, how these approximate functions simplify the calculations of the high energy ionization processes.

Boundary Solutions of the Two-electron Schrodinger Equation at Two-particle Coalescences of the Atomic Systems

The limit relations for the partial derivatives of the two-electron atomic wave functions at the two-particle coalescence lines have been obtained numerically using accurate CFHHM wave functions. The asymptotic solutions of the proper two-electron Schrodinger equation have been derived for both electron-nucleus and electron-electron coalescence. It is shown that the solutions for the electron-nucleus coalescence correspond to the ground and singly excited bound states, including triplet ones. The proper solutions at small distances $R$ from the triple coalescence point were presented as the second order expansion on R and lnR. The vanishing of the Fock's logarithmic terms at the electron-nucleus coalescence line was revealed in the frame of this expansion, unlike the case of electron-electron coalescence. On the basis of the obtained boundary solutions the approximate wave function corresponding to both coalescence lines have been proposed in the two-exponential form with no variational parameters.

Calculation of the photoionization with de-excitation cross sections of He and helium-like ions

We discuss the results of the calculation of the photoionization with de-excitation of excited He and helium-like ions Li$^{+}$ and B$^{3+}$ at high but non-relativistic photon energies $ω$. Several lower $^{1}S$ and $^{3}S$ states are considered. We present and analyze the ratios $R_{d}^{+\ast}$ of the cross sections of photoionization with de-excitation, $σ_{(d)}^{+\ast}(ω)$, and of the photo-ionization with excitation, $σ^{+\ast}(ω)$. The dependence of $R_{d}^{+\ast}$ on the excitation of the target object and the charge of its nucleus is presented. Apart to theoretical interest, results obtained can be verified using such long living excited state as $2^{3}S$ of He.

Universal Cause of High-Tc Superconductivity and Anomalous Behavior of Heavy Fermion Metals

Unusual properties of strongly correlated liquid observed in the high-$T_c$ superconductors and heavy-fermion (HF) metals are determined by quantum phase transitions taking place at their critical points. Therefore, direct experimental studies of these transitions and critical points are of crucial importance for understanding the physics of high-$T_c$ superconductors and HF metals. In case of high-$T_c$ superconductors such direct experimental studies are absent since at low temperatures corresponding critical points are occupied by the superconductivity. Recent experimental data on the behavior of HF metals illuminate both the nature of these critical points and the nature of the phase transitions. We show that it is of crucial importance to simultaneously carry out studies of both the high-$T_c$ superconductivity and the anomalous behavior of HF metals. Our general consideration suggests that FCQPT and the emergence of novel quasiparticles near and behind FCQPT are distinctive features of strongly correlated substances such as the high-$T_c$ superconductors and HF metals. We show that the main properties and universal behavior of the high-$T_c$ superconductors and HF metals can be understood within the framework of presented here theory based on FCQPT. A large number of the experimental evidences in favor of the existence of FCQPT in high-$T_c$ superconductors and HF metals is presented.

Quasiparticles and order parameter near quantum phase transition in heavy fermion metals

It is shown that the Landau paradigm based upon both the quasiparticle concept and the notion of the order parameter is valid and can be used to explain the anomalous behavior of the heavy fermion metals near quantum critical points. The understanding of this phenomenon has been problematic largely because of the absence of theoretical guidance. Exploiting this paradigm and the fermion condensation quantum phase transition, we investigate the anomalous behavior of the heavy electron liquid near its critical point at different temperatures and applied magnetic fields. We show that this anomalous behavior is universal and can be used to capture the essential aspects of recent experiments on heavy-fermion metals at low temperatures.

On the relation between the Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham approaches

We show that the Hartree-Fock (HF) results cannot be reproduced within the framework of Kohn-Sham (KS) theory because the single-particle densities of finite systems obtained within the HF calculations are not $v$-representable, i.e., do not correspond to any ground state of a $N$ non-interacting electron systems in a local external potential. For this reason, the KS theory, which finds a minimum on a different subset of all densities, can overestimate the ground state energy, as compared to the HF result. The discrepancy between the two approaches provides no grounds to assume that either the KS theory or the density functional theory suffers from internal contradictions.

Density Functional Theory versus the Hartree Fock Method: Comparative Assessment

We compare two different approaches to investigations of many-electron systems. The first is the Hartree-Fock (HF) method and the second is the Density Functional Theory (DFT). Overview of the main features and peculiar properties of the HF method are presented. A way to realize the HF method within the Kohn-Sham (KS) approach of the DFT is discussed. We show that this is impossible without including a specific correlation energy, which is defined by the difference between the sum of the kinetic and exchange energies of a system considered within KS and HF, respectively. It is the nonlocal exchange potential entering the HF equations that generates this correlation energy. We show that the total correlation energy of a finite electron system, which has to include this correlation energy, cannot be obtained from considerations of uniform electron systems. The single-particle excitation spectrum of many-electron systems is related to the eigenvalues of the corresponding KS equations. We demonstrate that this spectrum does not coincide in general with the eigenvalues of KS or HF equations.

New Approach to Density Functional Theory and Description of Spectra of Finite Electron Systems

The self consistent version of the density functional theory is presented, which allows to calculate the ground state and dynamic properties of finite multi-electron systems. An exact functional equation for the effective interaction, from which one can construct the action functional, density functional, the response functions, and excitation spectra of the considered systems, is outlined. In the context of the density functional theory we consider the single particle excitation spectra of electron systems and relate the single particle spectrum to the eigenvalues of the corresponding Kohn-Sham equations. We find that the single particle spectrum coincides neither with the eigenvalues of the Kohn-Sham equations nor with those of the Hartree-Fock equations.

Two Types of the Effective Mass Divergence and the Grüneisen Ratio in Heavy Fermion Metals

The behavior of the specific heat $c_p$, effective mass $M^*$, and the thermal expansion coefficient $α$ of a Fermi system located near the fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT) is considered. We observe the first type behavior if the system is close to FCQPT: the specific heat $c_p\propto \sqrt{T}$, $M^*\propto1/\sqrt{T}$, while the thermal expansion coefficient $α\propto \sqrt{T}$. Thus, the Grüneisen ratio ${\rm Γ}(T)=α/c_p$ does not diverges. At the transition region, where the system passes over from the non-Fermi liquid to the Landau Fermi liquid, the ratio diverges as ${\rm Γ}(T)\propto 1/\sqrt{T}$. When the system becomes the Landau Fermi liquid, ${\rm Γ}(T,r)\propto 1/r$, with $r$ being a distance from the quantum critical point. Provided the system has undergone FCQPT, the second type takes place: the specific heat behaves as $c_p\propto \sqrt{T}$, $M^*\propto 1/T$, and $α=a+bT$ with $a,b$ being constants. Again, the Grüneisen ratio diverges as ${\rm Γ}(T)\propto 1/\sqrt{T}$.

Magnetic field-induced Landau Fermi Liquid in high-T_c metals

We consider the behavior of strongly correlated electron liquid in high-temperature superconductors within the framework of the fermion condensation model. We show that at low temperatures the normal state recovered by the application of a magnetic field larger than the critical field can be viewed as the Landau Fermi liquid induced by the magnetic field. In this state, the Wiedemann-Franz law and the Korringa law are held and the elementary excitations are the Landau Fermi Liquid quasiparticles. Contrary to what might be expected from the Landau theory, the effective mass of quasiparticles depends on the magnetic field. The recent experimental verifications of the Wiedemann-Franz law in heavily hole-overdoped, overdoped and optimally doped cuprates and the verification of the Korringa law in the electron-doped copper-oxide superconductor strongly support the existence of fermion condensate in high-T_c metals.

Quasiparticles in the Superconducting State of High-T_c Metals

We consider the behavior of quasiparticles in the superconducting state of high-T_c metals within the framework of the theory of superconducting state based on the fermion condensation quantum phase transition. We show that the behavior coincides with the behavior of Bogoliubov quasiparticles, whereas the maximum value of the superconducting gap and other exotic properties are determined by the presence of the fermion condensate. If at low temperatures the normal state is recovered by the application of a magnetic field suppressing the superconductivity, the induced state can be viewed as Landau Fermi liquid. These observations are in good agreement with recent experimental facts.

Correlation structure in nondipole photoionization

The nondipole parameters that characterize the angular disribution of the photoelectrons from the 3d subshell of Cs are found to be altered qualitatively by the inclusion of correlation in the form of interchannel coupling between the $3d_{3/2}$ and $3d_{5/2}$ photoionization channels. A prominent characteristic maximum is predicted only in the parameters for $3d_{5/2}$ photoionization, while the effect for $3d_{3/2}$ is rather weak. The results are obtained within the framework of the Generalized Random Phase Approximation with Exchange (GRPAE), which in addition to the RPAE effects takes into account the rearrangement of all atomic electrons due to the creation of a 3d vacancy.
