Magnetic and Superconducting Phase Diagram of Nb/Gd/Nb trilayers

We report on a study of the structural, magnetic and superconducting properties of Nb(25nm)/Gd($d_f$)/Nb(25nm) hybrid structures of a superconductor/ ferromagnet (S/F) type. The structural characterization of the samples, including careful determination of the layer thickness, was performed using neutron and X-ray scattering with the aid of depth sensitive mass-spectrometry. The magnetization of the samples was determined by SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry and the presence of magnetic ordering for all samples down to the thinnest Gd(0.8nm) layer was shown. The analysis of the neutron spin asymmetry allowed us to prove the absence of magnetically dead layers in junctions with Gd interlayer thickness larger than one monolayer. The measured dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c(d_f)$ has a damped oscillatory behavior with well defined positions of the minimum at $d_f$=3nm and the following maximum at $d_f$=4nm; the behavior, which is in qualitative agreement with the prior work (J.S. Jiang et al, PRB 54, 6119). The analysis of the $T_c(d_f)$ dependence based on Usadel equations showed that the observed minimum at $d_f$=3nm can be described by the so called "$0$" to "$π$" phase transition of highly transparent S/F interfaces with the superconducting correlation length $ξ_f \approx 4$nm in Gd. This penetration length is several times higher than for strong ferromagnets like Fe, Co or Ni, simplifying thus preparation of S/F structures with $d_f \sim ξ_f$ which are of topical interest in superconducting spintronics.

Beyond Moore's technologies: operation principles of a superconductor alternative

The predictions of Moore's law are considered by experts to be valid until 2020 giving rise to "post-Moore's" technologies afterwards. Energy efficiency is one of the major challenges in high-performance computing that should be answered. Superconductor digital technology is a promising post-Moore's alternative for the development of supercomputers. In this paper, we consider operation principles of an energy-efficient superconductor logic and memory circuits with a short retrospective review of their evolution. We analyze their shortcomings in respect to computer circuits design. Possible ways of further research are outlined.

Current-phase relations in SIsFS junctions in the vicinity of 0-$π$ transition

We consider the current-phase relation (CPR) in the Josephson junctions with complex insulator-superconductor-ferromagnetic interlayers in the vicinity of 0-$π$ transition. We find a strong impact of the second harmonic on CPR of the junctions. It is shown that the critical current can be kept constant in the region of 0-pi transition, while the CPR transforms through multi-valued hysteretic states depending on the relative values of tunnel transparency and magnetic thickness. Moreover, CPR in the transition region has multiple branches with distinct ground states.

Observability of surface currents in p-wave superconductors

A general approach is formulated to describe spontaneous surface current distribution in a chiral p-wave superconductor. We use the quasiclassical Eilenberger formalism in the Ricatti parametrization to describe various types of the superconductor surface, including arbitrary roughness and metallic behaviour of the surface layer. We calculate angle resolved distributions of the spontaneous surface currents and formulate the conditions of their observability. We argue that local measurements of these currents by muSR technique may provide an information on the underlying pairing symmetry in the bulk superconductor.

Abrikosov vortices in SF bilayers

We study the spatial distribution of supercurrent circulated around an Abrikosov vortex in an SF bilayer in perpendicular magnetic field. Within the dirty limit regime and circular cell approximation for the vortex lattice, we derive the conditions when the Usadel equations the F layer can be solved analytically. Using the obtained solutions, we demonstrate the possibility of reversal of direction of proximity induced supercurrents around the vortex in the F layer compared to that in the S-layer. The direction of currents can be controlled either by varying transparency of the SF interface or by changing an exchange field in a ferromagnet. We argue that the origin of this effect is due the phase shift between singlet and triplet order parameter components induced in the F-layer. Possible ways of experimental detection of the predicted effect are discussed.

Analytical derivation of DC SQUID response

We consider voltage and current responses formation in DC SQUID with overdamped Josephson junctions in resistive and superconducting state in the frame of resistively shunted junction (RSJ) model. For simplicity we neglect the junction capacitance and the noise effect. Explicit expressions for the responses in resistive state were obtained for a SQUID which is symmetrical with respect to bias current injection point. Normalized SQUID inductance $l = 2 e I_c L/\hbar$ (where $I_c$ is the critical current of Josephson junction, $L$ is the SQUID inductance, $e$ is the electron charge and $\hbar$ is the Planck constant) was assumed to be within the range $l \leq 1$, subsequently expanded up to $l \approx 7$ using two fitting parameters. SQUID current response in superconducting state was considered for arbitrary value of the inductance. Impact of small technological spread of parameters relevant for low-temperature superconductor (LTS) technology was studied with generalization of the developed analytical approach for a case of small difference of critical currents and shunt resistances of the Josephson junctions, and inequality of SQUID inductive shoulders for both resistive and superconducting states. Comparison with numerical calculation results shows that developed analytical expressions can be used in practical LTS SQUIDs and SQUID-based circuits design, e.g. large serial SQIF, drastically decreasing the time of simulation.

Superconducting Phase Domains for Memory Applications

In this work we study theoretically the properties of S-F/N-sIS type Josephson junctions in the frame of the quasiclassical Usadel formalism. The structure consists of two superconducting electrodes (S), a tunnel barrier (I), a combined normal metal/ferromagnet (N/F) interlayer and a thin superconducting film (s). We demonstrate the breakdown of a spatial uniformity of the superconducting order in the s-film and its decomposition into domains with a phase shift $π$ . The effect is sensitive to the thickness of the s layer and the widths of the F and N films in the direction along the sIS interface. We predict the existence of a regime where the structure has two energy minima and can be switched between them by an electric current injected laterally into the structure. The state of the system can be non-destructively read by an electric current flowing across the junction.

Josephson effect in SIFS-tunnel junctions with domain walls in weak link region

We study theoretically the properties of SIFS type Josephson junctions composed of two superconducting (S) electrodes separated by an insulating layer (I) and a ferromagnetic (F) film consisting of periodic magnetic domains structure with antiparallel magnetization directions in neighboring domains. The two-dimensional problem in the weak link area is solved analytically in the framework of the linearized quasiclassical Usadel equations. Based on this solution, the spatial distributions of the critical current density, $J_{C},$ in the domains and critical current, $I_{C},$ of SIFS structures are calculated as a function of domain wall parameters, as well as the thickness, $d_{F},$ and the width, $W,$ of the domains. We demonstrate that $I_{C}(d_{F},W)$ dependencies exhibit damped oscillations with the ratio of the decay length, $ξ_{1},$ and oscillation period, $ξ_{2},$ being a function of the parameters of the domains, and this ratio may take any value from zero to unity. Thus, we propose a new physical mechanism that may explain the essential difference between $ξ_{1}$ and $ξ_{2}$ observed experimentally in various types of SFS Josephson junctions.

Inductance extraction of superconductor structures with internal current sources

The sheet current model underlying the software 3D-MLSI package for calculation of inductances of multilayer superconducting circuits, has been further elaborated. The developed approach permits to overcome serious limitations on the shape of the circuits layout and opens the way for simulation of internal contacts or vias between layers. Two models for internal contacts have been considered. They are a hole as a current terminal and distributed current source. Advantages of the developed approach are illustrated by calculating the spatial distribution of the superconducting current in several typical layouts of superconducting circuits. New meshing procedure permits now to implement triangulation for joint projection of all nets thus improving discrete physical model for inductance calculations of circuits made both in planarized and non-planarized fabrication processes. To speed-up triangulation and build mesh of better quality, we adopt known program "Triangle".

Josephson magnetic rotary valve

We propose a control element for a Josephson spin valve. It is a complex Josephson device containing ferromagnetic (F) layer in the weak-link area consisting of two regions, representing $0$ and $π$ Josephson junctions, respectively. The valve's state is defined by mutual orientations of the F-layer magnetization vector and normal to the interface separating $0$ and $π$ sections of the device. We consider possible implementation of the control element by introduction of a thin normal metal layer in a part of the device area. By means of theoretical simulations we study properties of the valve's structure as well as its operation, revealing such advantages as simplicity of control, high characteristic frequency and good legibility of the basic states.

Anomalous surface states at interfaces in p-wave superconductors

We present the results of theoretical study of surface state properties in a two-dimensional model for triplet $p$-wave superconductors. We derive boundary conditions for Eilenberger equations at rough interfaces and develop the approach for self-consistent solution for the spatial dependence of $p_{x}$ and $p_{x}+i~p_{y}$ -wave pair potentials. In the $p_{x}$ case we demonstrate the robustness of the zero-energy peak in the density of states (DoS) with respect to surface roughness, in contrast to the suppression of such a peak in the case of $d_{xy}$ symmetry. This effect is due to stability of odd-frequency pairing state at the surface with respect to disorder. In the case of the chiral $p_{x}+i~p_{y}$ state we demonstrate the appearance of a complex multi-peak subgap structure in the spectrum with increasing surface roughness.

The effect of normal metal layers in ferromagnetic Josephson junctions

Using the Usadel equation approach, we provide a compact formalism to calculate the critical current density of 21 different types of ferromagnetic (F) Josephson junctions containing insulating (I) and normal metal (N) layers in the weak link regions. In particular, we obtain that even a thin additional N layer may shift the 0-$π$ transitions to larger or smaller values of the thickness $d_F$ of the ferromagnet, depending on its conducting properties. For certain values of $d_F$, a 0-$π$ transition can even be achieved by changing only the N layer thickness. We use our model to fit experimental data of SIFS and SINFS tunnel junctions, where S is a superconducting electrode.

Conductance spectroscopy in ferromanget/superconductor hybrids

We present theoretical model for the proximity effect in F-SFF-F structures (F is ferromagnet, S is superconductor) with non-collinear magnetizations vectors in the F-layers and with arbitrary magnitudes of exchange fields. Electrical conductance of these structures is analyzed within the Keldysh-Usadel formalism in the diffusive regime as a function of a misorientation angle between magnetizations of the F-layers and transparencies of SF and FF interfaces. We show that long-range triplet superconducting correlations manifest themselves either as a zero-bias peak in the case of perfect transparency of FF interface, or as a two-peak structure in the case of finite transparency. The predicted features may serve as a diagnostic tool for characterization of interfaces in superconducting hybrid structures

Theory of supercurrent transport in SIsFS Josephson junctions

We present the results of theoretical study of Current-Phase Relations (CPR) in Josephson junctions of SIsFS type, where 'S' is a bulk superconductor and 'IsF' is a complex weak link consisting of a superconducting film 's', a metallic ferromagnet 'F' and an insulating barrier 'I'. We calculate the relationship between Josephson current and phase difference. At temperatures close to critical, calculations are performed analytically in the frame of the Ginsburg-Landau equations. At low temperatures numerical method is developed to solve selfconsistently the Usadel equations in the structure. We demonstrate that SIsFS junctions have several distinct regimes of supercurrent transport and we examine spatial distributions of the pair potential across the structure in different regimes. We study the crossover between these regimes which is caused by shifting the location of a weak link from the tunnel barrier 'I' to the F-layer. We show that strong deviations of the CPR from sinusoidal shape occur even in a vicinity of Tc, and these deviations are strongest in the crossover regime. We demonstrate the existence of temperature-induced crossover between 0 and pi states in the contact and show that smoothness of this transition strongly depends on the CPR shape.

Ferromagnetic planar Josephson junction with transparent interfaces: a ϕ junction proposal

We calculate the current phase relation of a planar Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic weak link located on top of a thin normal metal film. Following experimental observations we assume transparent superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces. This provides the best interlayer coupling and a low suppression of the superconducting correlations penetrating from the superconducting electrodes into the ferromagnetic layer. We show that this Josephson junction is a promising candidate for an experimental ϕ junction realization.

Theoretical Model of Superconducting Spintronic SIsFS Devices

Motivated by recent progress in development of cryogenic memory compatible with single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits we have performed a theoretical study of magnetic SIsFS Josephson junctions, where 'S' is a bulk superconductor, 's' is a thin superconducting film, 'F' is a metallic ferromagnet and 'I' is an insulator. We calculate the Josephson current as a function of s and F layers thickness, temperature and exchange energy of F film. We outline several modes of operation of these junctions and demonstrate their unique ability to have large product of a critical current $I_{C}$ and a normal-state resistance $R_{N}$ in the $π$ state, comparable to that in SIS tunnel junctions commonly used in SFQ circuits. We develop a model describing switching of the Josephson critical current in these devices by external magnetic field. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data for Nb-Al/AlO${_x}$-Nb-Pd$_{0.99}$Fe$_{0.01}$-Nb junctions.

Josephson $φ$-junctions based on structures with complex normal/ferromagnet bilayer

We demonstrate that Josephson devices with nontrivial phase difference $% 0<φ_g <π$ in the ground state can be realized in structures composed from longitudinally oriented normal metal (N) and ferromagnet (F) films in the weak link region. Oscillatory coupling across F-layer makes the first harmonic in the current-phase relation relatively small, while coupling across N-layer provides negative sign of the second harmonic. To derive quantitative criteria for a $φ$-junction, we have solved two-dimensional boundary-value problem in the frame of Usadel equations for overlap and ramp geometries of S-NF-S structures. Our numerical estimates show that $φ$-junctions can be fabricated using up-to-date technology.

Superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junction: From the dirty to the clean limit

The proximity effect and the Josephson current in a superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIFS) junction are investigated within the framework of the quasiclassical Eilenberger equations. This investigation allows us to compare the dirty and the clean limits, to investigate an arbitrary impurity scattering, and to determine the applicability limits of the Usadel equations for such structures. The role of different types of the FS interface is analyzed. It is shown that the decay length and the spatial oscillation period of the Eilenberger function may exhibit a nonmonotonic dependence on the properties of the ferromagnetic layer such as exchange field or electron mean free path. The results of our calculations are applied to the interpretation of experimentally observed dependencies of the critical current density on the ferromagnet thickness in Josephson junctions containing a Ni layer with an arbitrary scattering.
