Deviating band symmetries and many-body interactions in a model hole doped iron pnictide superconductor

We present a polarization resolved study of the low energy band structure in the optimally doped iron pnictide superconductor Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (T$_c$=37K) using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Polarization-contrasted measurements are used to identify and trace all three low energy hole-like bands predicted by local density approximation (LDA) calculations. The photoemitted electrons reveal an inconsistency with LDA-predicted symmetries along the $Γ$-X high symmetry momentum axis, due to unexpectedly strong rotational anisotropy in electron kinetics. We evaluate many-body effects such as Mott-Hubbard interactions that are likely to underlie the anomaly, and discuss how the observed deviations from LDA band structure affect the energetics of iron pnictide Cooper pairing in the hole doped regime.

Topological electronic structure and Weyl semimetal in the TlBiSe$_2$ class of semiconductors

We present an analysis of bulk and surface electronic structures of thallium based ternary III-V-VI$_2$ series of compounds TlMQ$_2$, where M=Bi or Sb and Q=S, Se or Te, using the ab initio density functional theory framework. Based on parity analysis and (111) surface electronic structure, we predict TlSbSe$_2$, TlSbTe$_2$, TlBiSe$_2$ and TlBiTe$_2$ to be non-trivial topological insulators with a single Dirac cone at the $Γ$-point, and TlSbS$_2$ and TlBiS$_2$ to be trivial band insulators. Our predicted topological phases agree well with available angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, in particular the topological phase changes between TlBiSe$_2$ and TlBiS$_2$. Moreover, we propose that Weyl semimetal can be realized at the topological critical point in TlBi(S$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_2$ and TlBi(S$_{1-x}$Te$_x$)$_2$ alloys by breaking the inversion symmetry in the layer by layer growth in the order of Tl-Se(Te)-Bi-S, yielding six Dirac cones centered along the $Γ-L$ directions in the bulk band structure.

Elastic, thermodynamic, electronic and optical properties of U2Ti

An investigation of U2Ti, a potentially safe and heavy metal-based storage material for radioactive tritium for fusion reactor, has been performed using pseudopotential density functional theory. The analysis of the elastic constants and other moduli calculated for the first time shows large anisotropy on elasticity and brittle behavior. A quasi-harmonic Debye model, which considers the vibrational contribution to the total free energy of the system, has been used to investigate the finite-temperature and finite-pressure thermodynamic properties of U2Ti. The electronic band structure reveals metallic conductivity and the major contribution comes from U-5f states. By analyzing the optical spectra, the origin of the various structures is also explained in terms of the calculated electronic structure. Further the reflectivity spectrum shows that the material is perfect reflector within the energy range 8-12.5 eV. Observation of Topological Crystalline Insulator phase in the lead tin chalcogenide Pb1-xSnxTe material class

We perform systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopic measurements on the lead tin telluride Pb1-xSnxTe pseudobinary alloy system. We show that the (001) crystalline surface, which is a crystalline surface symmetric about the (110) mirror planes of the Pb1-xSnxTe crystal, pos- sesses four metallic surface states within its surface Brillouin zone. Our systematic Fermi surface and band topology measurements show that the observed Dirac-like surface states lie on the symmetric momentum-space cuts. We further show that upon going to higher electron binding energies, the surface states' isoenergetic countours in close vicinity of each X point are observed to hybridize with each other, leading to a Fermi surface fractionalization and the Lifshitz transition. In addition, systematic incident photon energy dependent measurements are performed, which enable us to un- ambiguously identify the surface states from the bulk bands. These systematic measurements of the surface and bulk electronic structure on Pb1-xSnxTe, supported by our first principles calculation results, for the first time, show that the Pb1-xSnxTe system belongs to the topological crystalline insulator phase due to the four band inversions at the L points in its Brillouin zone, which has been recently theoretically predicted.

Observation of Topological Order in the TlBiSe2 class : Probing the "spin" and "phase" on topological insulator surfaces

A topological insulator is characterized by spin-momentum locking on its boundary. The spin momentum locking on the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator leads to the existence of a non-trivial Berry's phase which leads to exotic transport phenomena on topological surfaces. Using spin-sensitive probes (Mott polarimetry), we observe the spin-momentum coupling and uncover the chiral nature of surface electrons in TlBiSe2. We demonstrate that the surface electrons in TlBiSe2 collectively carry a quantum Berry's phase of $π$ and a definite chirality ($η$ = -1, left-handed) associated with its spin-texture or vortex-structure on the Fermi surface on both the top and the bottom surfaces. Our experimental results for the first time not only prove the existence of Z2 topological-order in the bulk but also reveal the existence of helical quasiparticle modes on the topological surface. Spin-texture calculations would be reported elsewhere.

Electron behavior in topological insulator based P-N overlayer interfaces

Topological insulators (TIs) are novel materials that manifest spin-polarized Dirac states on their surfaces or at interfaces made with conventional matter. We have measured the electron kinetics of bulk doped TI Bi$_2$Se$_3$ with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy while depositing cathodic and anodic adatoms on the TI surfaces to add charge carriers of the opposite sign from bulk dopants. These P-N overlayer interfaces create Dirac point transport regimes and larger interface potentials than previous N-N type surface deposition studies, revealing unconventional Rashba-like and surface-bulk electron interactions, and an unusual characteristic distribution of spectral weight near the Dirac point in TI Dirac point interfaces. The electronic structures of P-N doped topological interfaces observed in these experiments are an important step towards the understanding of solid interfaces with topological materials.

Effects of iron doping on the topological insulator surfaces

Topological insulators embody a newly discovered state of matter characterized by conducting spin-momentum locked surface states that span the bulk band gap. So far, most of the study on topological insulator surfaces has been limited to understanding their properties without strong Coulomb perturbation or breaking of time reversal symmetry. We have used deposited iron, with a large positive ionization state and significant magnetic moment as a strong probe to modify the surface electronic structure of the Bi2Se3 surface at the gap energy scale. We observe that such perturbation leads to the creation of multiple Dirac fermions consistent with Z2 or Mod(2) symmetry. Taken collectively, these results are a helpful guide in manipulating topological surfaces for probing fundamental physics or developing device applications.

An isolated Dirac cone on the surface of ternary tetradymite-like topological insulators

We have extended the search for topological insulators to the ternary tetradymite-like compounds M2X2Y (M = Bi or Sb; X and Y = S, Se or Te), which are variations of the well-known binary compounds Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3. Our first-principles computations suggest that five existing compounds are strong topological insulators with a single Dirac cone on the surface. In particular, stoichiometric Bi2Se2S, Sb2Te2Se and Sb2Te2S are predicted to have an isolated Dirac cone on their naturally cleaved surface. This finding paves the way for the realization of the topological transport regime.

Bi2Te1.6S1.4 - a Topological Insulator in the Tetradymite Family

We describe the crystal growth, crystal structure, and basic electrical properties of Bi2Te1.6S1.4, which incorporates both S and Te in its Tetradymite quintuple layers in the motif -[Te0.8S0.2]-Bi-S-Bi-[Te0.8S0.2]-. This material differs from other Tetradymites studied as topological insulators due to the increased ionic character that arises from its significant S content. Bi2Te1.6S1.4 forms high quality crystals from the melt and is the S-rich limit of the ternary Bi-Te-S γ-Tetradymite phase at the melting point. The native material is n-type with a low resistivity; Sb substitution, with adjustment of the Te to S ratio, results in a crossover to p-type and resistive behavior at low temperatures. Angle resolved photoemission study shows that topological surface states are present, with the Dirac point more exposed than it is in Bi2Te3 and similar to that seen in Bi2Te2Se. Single crystal structure determination indicates that the S in the outer chalcogen layers is closer to the Bi than the Te, and therefore that the layers supporting the surface states are corrugated on the atomic scale.

Anomalous spin-momentum locked two-dimensional states in the vicinity of a topological phase transition

We perform spin-resolved and spin-integrated angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on a series of compositions in the BiTl(S1-xSex)2 system, focusing on x-values in the vicinity of the critical point for the topological phase transition (the band inversion composition). We observe quasi two dimensional (2D) states on the outer boundary of the bulk electronic bands in the trivial side (non-inverted regime) of the transition. Systematic spin-sensitive measurements reveal that the observed 2D states are spin-momentum locked, whose spin texture resembles the helical spin texture on the surface of a topological insulator. These anomalous states are observed to be only prominent near the critical point, thus are possibly related to strong precursor states of topological phase transition near the relaxed surface.

Bulk Intergrowth of a Topological Insulator with a Room Temperature Ferromagnet

We demonstrate that the layered room temperature ferromagnet Fe7Se8 and the topological insulator Bi2Se3 form crystallographically oriented bulk composite intergrowth crystals. The morphology of the intergrowth in real space and reciprocal space is described. Critically, the basal planes of Bi2Se3 and Fe7Se8 are parallel and hence the good cleavage inherent in the bulk phases is retained. The intergrowth is on the micron scale. Both phases in the intergrowth crystals display their intrinsic bulk properties: the ferromagnetism of the Fe7Se8 is anisotropic, with magnetization easy axis in the plane of the crystals, and ARPES characterization shows that the topological surface states remain present on the Bi2Se3. Analogous behavior is found for what has been called "Fe-doped Bi2Se3."

Coexisting pseudogap, charge transfer gap, and Mott gap energy scales in the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra of electron-doped cuprates

We present a computation of Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra for electron-doped cuprates which includes coupling to bosonic fluctuations. Comparison with experiment over a wide range of energy and momentum transfers allows us to identify the signatures of three key normal-state energy scales: the pseudogap, charge transfer gap, and Mott gap. The calculations involve a three band Hubbard Hamiltonian based on Cu $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and O $p_x$, $p_y$ orbitals, with a self-energy correction which arises due to spin and charge fluctuations. Our theory reproduces characteristic features e.g., gap collapse, large spectral weight broadening, and spectral weight transfer as a function of doping, as seen in experiments.

Fermi surface topology and low-lying electronic structure of a new iron-based superconductor Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5

We report a first study of low energy electronic structure and Fermi surface topology for the recently discovered iron-based superconductor Ca10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 (the 10-3-8 phase, with Tc = 8K), via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Despite its triclinic crystal structure, ARPES results reveal a fourfold symmetric band structure with the absence of Dirac-cone-like Fermi dots (related to magnetism) found around the Brillouin zone corners in other iron-based superconductors. Considering that the triclinic lattice and structural supercell arising from the Pt3As8 intermediary layers, these results indicate that those layers couple only weakly to the FeAs layers in this new superconductor, which has implications for the determination of its potentially novel pairing mechanism.

Topological Phase Transition and Texture Inversion in a Tunable Topological Insulator

The recently discovered three dimensional or bulk topological insulators are expected to exhibit exotic quantum phenomena. It is believed that a trivial insulator can be twisted into a topological state by modulating the spin-orbit interaction or the crystal lattice via odd number of band inversions, driving the system through a topological quantum phase transition. By directly measuring the topological invariants (for the method to directly measure Fu-Kane {$ν_0$}, see Hsieh \textit{et.al.,} Science 323, 919 (2009) at http://www.sciencemag.org/content/323/5916/919.abstract) we report the observation of a phase transition in a tunable spin-orbit system BiTl(S{1-d}Se{d})2 (which is an analog of the most studied topological insulator Bi2Se3, see Xia \textit{et.al.,} Nature Phys. 5, 398 (2009) at http://www.nature.com/nphys/journal/v5/n6/full/nphys1294.html and Spin-Momentum locking at http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v460/n7259/full/nature08234.html) where the topological insulator state formation is visualized for the first time. In the topological state, vortex-like polarization states are observed to exhibit 3D vectorial textures, which collectively feature a chirality transition of its topological spin-textures as the spin-momentum locked (Z2 topologically ordered) electrons on the surface go through the zero carrier density point. Such phase transition and texture chirality inversion can be the physical basis for observing \textit{fractional charge} (e/2) and other related fractional topological phenomena.

Topological insulators in the quaternary chalcogenide compounds and ternary famatinite compounds

We present first-principles calculations to predict several three dimensional (3D) topological insulators in quaternary chalcogenide compounds which are made of I$_2$-II-IV-VI$_4$ compositions and in ternary compositions of I$_3$-V-VI$_4$ famatinite compounds. Among the large members of these two families, we give examples of naturally occurring compounds which are mainly Cu-based chalcogenides. We show that these materials are candidates of 3D topological insulators or can be tuned to obtain topological phase transition by manipulating the atomic number of the other cation and anion elements. A band inversion can occur at a single point $Γ$ with considerably large inversion strength, in addition to the opening of a bulk band gap throughout the Brillouin zone. We also demonstrate that both of these families are related to each other by cross-substitutions of cations in the underlying tetragonal structure and that one can suitably tune their topological properties in a desired manner.

Novel Spin-texture on the warped Dirac-cone surface states in topological insulators

We have investigated the nature of surface states in the Bi2Te3 family of three-dimensional topological insulators using first-principles calculations as well as model Hamiltonians. When the surface Dirac cone is warped due to Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in rhombohedral structures, the spin acquires a finite out-of-plane component. We predict a novel in-plane spin-texture of the warped surface Dirac cone with spins not perpendicular to the electron momentum. Our k.p model calculation reveals that this novel in-plane spin-texture requires high order Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling terms.

Direct observation of spin-polarized surface states in the parent compound of topological insulator Bi-Sb using spin-resolved-ARPES in a 3D Mott-polarimetry spin mode

We report high-resolution spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (Spin-ARPES) measurements on the parent compound Sb of the first discovered 3D topological insulator Bi{1-x}Sb{x} [D. Hsieh et al., Nature 452, 970 (2008) Submitted 2007]. By modulating the incident photon energy, we are able to map both the bulk and (111) surface band structure, from which we directly demonstrate that the surface bands are spin polarized by the spin-orbit interaction and connect the bulk valence and conduction bands in a topologically non-trivial way. A unique asymmetric Dirac surface state gives rise to a $k$-splitting of its spin polarized electronic channels. These results complement our previously published works on this materials class and re-confirm our discovery of first bulk (3D) topological insulator - topological order in bulk solids. Realization of an isolated Dirac node and strongly modulated Spin Texture in the topological insulator Bi2Te3

The development of spin-based applications of topological insulators requires the knowledge and understanding of spin texture configuration maps as they change via gating in the vicinity of an isolated Dirac node. An isolated (graphene-like) Dirac node, however, does not exist in Bi2Te3. While the isolation of surface states via transport channels has been promisingly achieved in Bi2Te3, it is not known how spin textures modulate while gating the surface. Another drawback of Bi2Te3 is that it features multiple band crossings while chemical potential is placed near the Dirac node (at least 3 not one as in Bi2Se3 and many other topological insulators) and its buried Dirac point is not experimentally accessible for the next generation of experiments which require tuning the chemical potential near an isolated (graphene-like) Dirac node. Here, we image the spin texture of Bi2Te3 and suggest a simple modification to realize a much sought out isolated Dirac node regime critical for almost all potential applications (of topological nature) of Bi2Te3. Finally, we demonstrate carrier control in magnetically and nonmagnetically doped Bi2Te3 essential for realizing giant magneto-optical effects and dissipationless spin current devices involving a Bi2Te3-based platform.
