A geometric Hamilton--Jacobi theory for a Nambu--Poisson structure

The Hamilton-Jacobi theory is a formulation of Classical Mechanics equivalent to other formulations as Newton's equations, Lagrangian or Hamiltonian Mechanics. It is particulary useful for the identification of conserved quantities of a mechanical system. The primordial observation of a geometric Hamilton-Jacobi equation is that if a Hamiltonian vector field $X_{H}$ can be projected into the configuration manifold by means of a 1-form $dW$, then the integral curves of the projected vector field $X_{H}^{dW}$can be transformed into integral curves of $X_{H}$ provided that $W$ is a solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. This interpretation has been applied to multiple settings: in nonhonolomic, singular Lagrangian Mechanics and classical field theories. Our aim is to apply the geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory to systems endowed with a Nambu-Poisson structure. The Nambu-Poisson structure has shown its interest in the study physical systems described by several Hamiltonian functions. In this way, we will apply our theory to two interesting examples in the Physics literature: the third-order Kummer-Schwarz equations and a system of $n$ copies of a first-order differential Riccati equation. From these examples, we retrieve the original Nambu bracket in three dimensions and a generalization of the Nambu bracket to $n$ dimensions, respectively.

K-symplectic formalism on Lie algebroids

In this paper we introduce a geometric description of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian classical field theories on Lie algebroids in the framework of k-symplectic geometry. We discuss the relation between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian descriptions through a convenient notion of Legendre transformation. The theory is a natural generalization of the standard one; in addition, other interesting examples are studied, in particular, systems with symmetry and Poisson sigma models.

The ubiquity of the symplectic hamiltonian equations in mechanics

In this paper, we derive a "hamiltonian formalism" for a wide class of mechanical systems, including classical hamiltonian systems, nonholonomic systems, some classes of servomechanism... This construction strongly relies in the geometry characterizing the different systems. In particular, we obtain that the class of the so-called algebroids covers a great variety of mechanical systems. Finally, as the main result, a hamiltonian symplectic realization of systems defined on algebroids is obtained.

Nonholonomic Constraints: a New Viewpoint

The purpose of this paper is to show that, at least for Lagrangians of mechanical type, nonholonomic Euler-Lagrange equations for a nonholonomic linear constraint D may be viewed as non-constrained Euler-Lagrange equations but on a new (generally not Lie) algebroid structure on D. The proposed novel formalism allows us to treat in a unified way a variety of situations in nonholonomic mechanics and gives rise to a version of Neoether Theorem producing actual first integrals in case of symmetries.

Non-holonomic Lagrangian systems on Lie algebroids

This paper presents a geometric description on Lie algebroids of Lagrangian systems subject to nonholonomic constraints. The Lie algebroid framework provides a natural generalization of classical tangent bundle geometry. We define the notion of nonholonomically constrained system, and characterize regularity conditions that guarantee the dynamics of the system can be obtained as a suitable projection of the unconstrained dynamics. The proposed novel formalism provides new insights into the geometry of nonholonomic systems, and allows us to treat in a unified way a variety of situations, including systems with symmetry, morphisms and reduction, and nonlinearly constrained systems. Various examples illustrate the results.

Nonholonomic constraints in $k$-symplectic Classical Field Theories

A $k$-symplectic framework for classical field theories subject to nonholonomic constraints is presented. If the constrained problem is regular one can construct a projection operator such that the solutions of the constrained problem are obtained by projecting the solutions of the free problem. Symmetries for the nonholonomic system are introduced and we show that for every such symmetry, there exist a nonholonomic momentum equation. The proposed formalism permits to introduce in a simple way many tools of nonholonomic mechanics to nonholonomic field theories.

Pre-multisymplectic constraint algorithm for field theories

We present a geometric algorithm for obtaining consistent solutions to systems of partial differential equations, mainly arising from singular covariant first-order classical field theories. This algorithm gives an intrinsic description of all the constraint submanifolds. The field equations are stated geometrically, either representing their solutions by integrable connections or, what is equivalent, by certain kinds of integrable m-vector fields. First, we consider the problem of finding connections or multivector fields solutions to the field equations in a general framework: a pre-multisymplectic fibre bundle (which will be identified with the first-order jet bundle and the multimomentum bundle when Lagrangian and Hamiltonian field theories are considered). Then, the problem is stated and solved in a linear context, and a pointwise application of the results leads to the algorithm for the general case. In a second step, the integrability of the solutions is also studied. Finally, the method is applied to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian field theories and, for the former, the problem of finding holonomic solutions is also analized.

Symmetries in Classical Field Theory

The multisymplectic description of Classical Field Theories is revisited, including its relation with the presymplectic formalism on the space of Cauchy data. Both descriptions allow us to give a complete scheme of classification of infinitesimal symmetries, and to obtain the corresponding conservation laws.

Geometric integrators and nonholonomic mechanics

A geometric derivation of nonholonomic integrators is developed. It is based in the classical technique of generating functions adapted to the special features of nonholonomic systems. The theoretical methodology and the integrators obtained are, in general, different from the previously obtained.

Tulczyjew's triples and lagrangian submanifolds in classical field theories

In this paper the notion of Tulczyjew's triples in classical mechanics is extended to classical field theories, using the so-called multisymplectic formalism, and a convenient notion of lagrangian submanifold in multisymplectic geometry. Accordingly, the dynamical equations are interpreted as the local equations defining these lagrangian submanifolds.

A new geometric setting for classical field theories

A new geometrical setting for classical field theories is introduced. This description is strongly inspired in the one due to Skinner and Rusk for singular lagrangians systems. For a singular field theory a constraint algorithm is developed that gives a final constraint submanifold where a well-defined dynamics exists. The main advantage of this algorithm is that the second order condition is automatically included.

Variational integrators and time-dependent lagrangian systems

This paper presents a method to construct variational integrators for time-dependent lagrangian systems. The resulting algorithms are symplectic, preserve the momentum map associated with a Lie group of symmetries and also describe the energy variation.

Non-holonomic constrained systems as implicit differential equations

Non-holonomic constraints, both in the Lagragian and Hamiltonian formalism, are discussed from the geometrical viewpoint of implicit differential equations. A precise statement of both problems is presented remarking the similarities and differences with other classical problems with constraints. In our discussion, apart from a constraint submanifold, a field of permitted directions and a system of reaction forces are given, the later being in principle unrelated to the constraint submanifold. An implicit differential equation is associated to a non-holonomic problem using the Tulczyjew's geometrical description of the Legendre transformation. The integrable part of this implicit differential equation is extracted using an adapted version of the integrability algorithm. Moreover, sufficient conditions are found that guarantees the compatibility of the non-holonomic problem, i.e., that assures that the integrability algorithm stops at first step, and moreover it implies the existence of a vector field whose integral curves are the solutions to the problem. In addition this vector field turns out to be a second order differential equation. These compatibility conditions are shown to include as particular cases many others obtained previously by other authors. Several examples and further lines of development of the subject are also discussed.
