On unipotent representations of ramified $p$-adic groups

Let G be any connected reductive group over a non-archimedean local field. We analyse the unipotent representations of G, in particular in the cases where G is ramified. We establish a local Langlands correspondence for this class of representations, and we show that it satisfies all the desiderata of Borel as well as the conjecture of Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda about formal degrees. This generalizes work of Lusztig and of Feng, Opdam and the author, to reductive groups that do not necessarily split over an unramified extension of the ground field. We also interpret our results in terms of rigid inner twists of G.

Hermitian duals and generic representations for affine Hecke algebras

We further develop the abstract representation theory of affine Hecke algebras with arbitrary positive parameters. We establish analogues of several results that are known for reductive p-adic groups. These include: the relation between parabolic induction/restriction and Hermitian duals, Bernstein's second adjointness and generalizations of the Langlands classification. We check that, in the known cases of equivalences between module categories of affine Hecke algebras and Bernstein blocks for reductive p-adic groups, such equivalences preserve Hermitian duality. We also initiate the study of generic representation of affine Hecke algebras. Based on an analysis of the Hecke algebras associated to generic Bernstein blocks for quasi-split reductive p-adic groups, we propose a fitting definition of genericity for modules over affine Hecke algebras. With that notion we prove special cases of the generalized injectivity conjecture, about generic subquotients of standard modules for affine Hecke algebras.

Endomorphism algebras and Hecke algebras for reductive p-adic groups

Let G be a reductive p-adic group and let Rep(G)^s be a Bernstein block in the category of smooth complex G-representations. We investigate the structure of Rep(G)^s, by analysing the algebra of G-endomorphisms of a progenerator Πof that category. We show that Rep(G)^s is "almost" Morita equivalent with a (twisted) affine Hecke algebra. This statement is made precise in several ways, most importantly with a family of (twisted) graded algebras. It entails that, as far as finite length representations are concerned, Rep(G)^s and End_G (Π)-Mod can be treated as the module category of a twisted affine Hecke algebra. We draw two consequences. Firstly, we show that the equivalence of categories between Rep(G)^s and End_G (Π)-Mod preserves temperedness of finite length representations. Secondly, we provide a classification of the irreducible representations in Rep(G)^s, in terms of the complex torus and the finite group canonically associated to Rep(G)^s. This proves a version of the ABPS conjecture and enables us to express the set of irreducible $G$-representations in terms of the supercuspidal representations of the Levi subgroups of $G$. Our methods are independent of the existence of types, and apply in complete generality.

The Buildings Gallery: visualising buildings

Buildings are beautiful mathematical objects tying a variety of subjects in algebra and geometry together in a very direct sense. They form a natural bridge to visualising more complex principles in group theory. As such they provide an opportunity to talk about the inner workings of mathematics to a broader audience, but the visualisations could also serve as a didactic tool in teaching group and building theory, and we believe they can even inspire future research. We present an algorithmic method to visualise these geometric objects. The main accomplishment is the use of existing theory to produce three dimensional, interactive models of buildings associated to groups with a $BN$-pair. The final product, an interactive web application called The Buildings Gallery, can be found at https://buildings.gallery \citep{Bekker2020}.

Hochschild homology of affine Hecke algebras

Let H = H (R,q) be an affine Hecke algebra with complex, possibly unequal parameters q, which are not roots of unity. We compute the Hochschild and the cyclic homology of H. It turns out that these are independent of q and that they admit an easy description in terms of the extended quotient of a torus by a Weyl group, both of which are canonically associated to the root datum R. For q positive we also prove that the representations of the family of algebras H (R,q^ε) come in families which depend analytically on the complex number ε. Analogous results are obtained for graded Hecke algebras and for Schwartz completions of affine Hecke algebras. Correction: in 2021 some problems with the construction of families of representations surfaced. These are discussed in additional comments in Section 2.

Hochschild homology of twisted crossed products and twisted graded Hecke algebras

Let A be a \C-algebra with an action of a finite group G, let $\natural$ be a 2-cocycle on $G$ and consider the twisted crossed product $A \rtimes \C [G,\natural]$. We determine the Hochschild homology of $A \rtimes \C [G,\natural]$ for two classes of algebras A: - rings of regular functions on nonsingular affine varieties, - graded Hecke algebras. The results are achieved via algebraic families of (virtual) representations and include a description of the Hochschild homology as module over the centre of $A \rtimes \C [G,\natural]$. This paper prepares for a computation of the Hochschild homology of the Hecke algebra of a reductive p-adic group.

Affine Hecke algebras and their representations

This is a survey paper about affine Hecke algebras. We start from scratch and discuss some algebraic aspects of their representation theory, referring to the literature for proofs. We aim in particular at the classification of irreducible representations. Only at the end we establish a new result: a natural bijection between the set of irreducible representations of an affine Hecke algebra with real parameters $\geq 1$, and the set of irreducible representations of the affine Weyl group underlying the algebra. This can be regarded as a generalized Springer correspondence with affine Hecke algebras.

Supercuspidal unipotent representations: L-packets and formal degrees

Let K be a non-archimedean local field and let G be a connected reductive K-group which splits over an unramified extension of K. We investigate supercuspidal unipotent representations of the group G(K). We establish a bijection between the set of irreducible G(K)-representations of this kind and the set of cuspidal enhanced L-parameters for G(K), which are trivial on the inertia subgroup of the Weil group of K. The bijection is characterized by a few simple equivariance properties and a comparison of formal degrees of representations with adjoint $γ$-factors of L-parameters. This can be regarded as a local Langlands correspondence for all supercuspidal unipotent representations. We count the ensueing L-packets, in terms of data from the affine Dynkin diagram of G. Finally, we prove that our bijection satisfies the conjecture of Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda about the formal degrees of the representations.

On formal degrees of unipotent representations

Let G be a reductive p-adic group which splits over an unramified extension of the ground field. Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda conjectured that the formal degree of a square-integrable G-representation $π$ can be expressed in terms of the adjoint $γ$-factor of the enhanced L-parameter of $π$. A similar conjecture was posed for the Plancherel densities of tempered irreducible G-representations. We prove these conjectures for unipotent G-representations. We also derive explicit formulas for the involved adjoint $γ$-factors.

Langlands parameters, functoriality and Hecke algebras

Let $G$ and $\tilde G$ be reductive groups over a local field $F$. Let $η: \tilde G \to G$ be a $F$-homomorphism with commutative kernel and commutative cokernel. We investigate the pullbacks of irreducible admissible $G$-representations $π$ along $η$. Following Borel, Adler--Korman and Xu, we pose a conjecture on the decomposition of the pullback $η^* π$. It is formulated in terms of enhanced Langlands parameters and includes multiplicities. This can be regarded as a functoriality property of the local Langlands correspondence. We prove this conjecture for three classes: principal series representation of split groups (over non-archimedean local fields), unipotent representations (also with $F$ non-archimedean) and inner twists of $GL_n, SL_n, PGL_n$. Our main techniques involve Hecke algebras associated to Langlands parameters. We also prove a version of the pullback/functoriality conjecture for those.

Morita equivalence for $k$-algebras

We review Morita equivalence for finite type $k$-algebras $A$ and also a weakening of Morita equivalence which we call stratified equivalence. The spectrum of $A$ is the set of equivalence classes of irreducible $A$-modules. For any finite type $k$-algebra $A$, the spectrum of $A$ is in bijection with the set of primitive ideals of $A$. The stratified equivalence relation preserves the spectrum of $A$ and also preserves the periodic cyclic homology of $A$. However, the stratified equivalence relation permits a tearing apart of strata in the primitive ideal space which is not allowed by Morita equivalence. A key example illustrating the distinction between Morita equivalence and stratified equivalence is provided by affine Hecke algebras associated to extended affine Weyl groups.

Conjugacy of Levi subgroups of reductive groups and a generalization to linear algebraic groups

We investigate Levi subgroups of a connected reductive algebraic group G, over a ground field K. We parametrize their conjugacy classes in terms of sets of simple roots and we prove that two Levi K-subgroups of G are rationally conjugate if and only if they are geometrically conjugate. These results are generalized to arbitrary connected linear algebraic K-groups. In that setting the appropriate analogue of a Levi subgroup is derived from the notion of a pseudo-parabolic subgroup.

Smooth Duals of Inner Forms of $GL_n$ and $SL_n$

Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. We prove that every Bernstein component in the smooth dual of each inner form of the general linear group $GL_n(F)$ is canonically in bijection with the extended quotient for the action, given by Bernstein, of a finite group on a complex torus. For inner forms of $SL_n(F)$ we prove that each Bernstein component is canonically in bijection with the associated twisted extended quotient. In both cases, the bijections satisfy naturality properties with respect to the tempered dual, parabolic induction, central character, and the local Langlands correspondence.

On the Baum--Connes conjecture with coefficients for linear algebraic groups

We prove the Baum--Connes conjecture with arbitrary coefficients for some classes of groups: (1) Linear algebraic groups over a non-archimedean local field. (2) Linear algebraic groups over the adeles of a global field k, provided that at every archimedean place of k the associated Lie group is amenable. (3) All closed subgroups of the above groups. This includes linear algebraic groups over global fields - with the same condition as in (2). Update: proof of main results incomplete, maybe not repairable.

A local Langlands correspondence for unipotent representations

Let G be a connected reductive group over a non-archimedean local field K, and assume that G splits over an unramified extension of K. We establish a local Langlands correspondence for irreducible unipotent representations of G. It comes as a bijection between the set of such representations and the collection of enhanced L-parameters for G, which are trivial on the inertia subgroup of the Weil group of K. We show that this correspondence has many of the expected properties, for instance with respect to central characters, tempered representations, the discrete series, cuspidality and parabolic induction. The core of our strategy is the investigation of affine Hecke algebras on both sides of the local Langlands correspondence. When a Bernstein component of G-representations is matched with a Bernstein component of enhanced L-parameters, we prove a comparison theorem for the two associated affine Hecke algebras. This generalizes work of Lusztig in the case of adjoint K-groups.

Conjectures about p-adic groups and their noncommutative geometry

Let G be any reductive p-adic group. We discuss several conjectures, some of them new, that involve the representation theory and the geometry of G. At the heart of these conjectures are statements about the geometric structure of Bernstein components for G, both at the level of the space of irreducible representations and at the level of the associated Hecke algebras. We relate this to two well-known conjectures: the local Langlands correspondence and the Baum--Connes conjecture for G. In particular, we present a strategy to reduce the local Langlands correspondence for irreducible G-representations to the local Langlands correspondence for supercuspidal representations of Levi subgroups.

Graded Hecke algebras for disconnected reductive groups

We introduce graded Hecke algebras H based on a (possibly disconnected) complex reductive group G and a cuspidal local system L on a unipotent orbit of a Levi subgroup M of G. These generalize the graded Hecke algebras defined and investigated by Lusztig for connected G. We develop the representation theory of the algebras H. obtaining complete and canonical parametrizations of the irreducible, the irreducible tempered and the discrete series representations. All the modules are constructed in terms of perverse sheaves and equivariant homology, relying on work of Lusztig. The parameters come directly from the data (G,M,L) and they are closely related to Langlands parameters. Our main motivation for considering these graded Hecke algebras is that the space of irreducible H-representations is canonically in bijection with a certain set of "logarithms" of enhanced L-parameters. Therefore we expect these algebras to play a role in the local Langlands program. We will make their relation with the local Langlands correspondence, which goes via affine Hecke algebras, precise in a sequel to this paper.

Topological K-theory of affine Hecke algebras

Let H(R,q) be an affine Hecke algebra with a positive parameter function q. We are interested in the topological K-theory of H(R,q), that is, the K-theory of its C*-completion C*_r (R,q). We will prove that $K_* (C*_r (R,q))$ does not depend on the parameter q. For this we use representation theoretic methods, in particular elliptic representations of Weyl groups and Hecke algebras. Thus, for the computation of these K-groups it suffices to work out the case q=1. These algebras are considerably simpler than for q not 1, just crossed products of commutative algebras with finite Weyl groups. We explicitly determine $K_* (C*_r (R,q))$ for all classical root data R, and for some others as well. This will be useful to analyse the K-theory of the reduced C*-algebra of any classical p-adic group. For the computations in the case q=1 we study the more general situation of a finite group Γacting on a smooth manifold M. We develop a method to calculate the K-theory of the crossed product $C(M) \rtimes Γ$. In contrast to the equivariant Chern character of Baum and Connes, our method can also detect torsion elements in these K-groups.
