On completions of Hecke algebras

Let G be a reductive p-adic group and let H(G)^s be a Bernstein block of the Hecke algebra of G. We consider two important topological completions of H(G)^s: a direct summand S(G)^s of the Harish-Chandra--Schwartz algebra of G and a two-sided ideal C*_r (G)^s of the reduced C*-algebra of G. These are useful for the study of all tempered smooth G-representations. We suppose that H(G)^s is Morita equivalent to an affine Hecke algebra H(R,q) -- as is known in many cases. The latter algebra also has a Schwartz completion S(R,q) and a C*-completion C*_r (R,q), both defined in terms of the underlying root datum R and the parameters q. We prove that, under some mild conditions, a Morita equivalence between H(G)^s and H(R,q) extends to Morita equivalences between S(G)^s and S(R,q), and between C*_r (G)^s and C*_r (R,q). We also check that our conditions are fulfilled in all known cases of such Morita equivalences between Hecke algebras. This is applied to compute the topological K-theory of the reduced C*-algebra of a classical p-adic group.

Pseudo-reductive and quasi-reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields

Among connected linear algebraic groups, quasi-reductive groups generalize pseudo-reductive groups, which in turn form a useful relaxation of the notion of reductivity. We study quasi-reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields, focusing on aspects involving their locally compact topology. For such groups we construct valuated root data (in the sense of Bruhat--Tits) and we make them act nicely on affine buildings. We prove that they admit Iwasawa and Cartan decompositions, and we construct small compact open subgroups with an Iwahori decomposition. We also initiate the smooth representation theory of quasi-reductive groups. Among others, we show that their irreducible smooth representations are uniformly admissible, and that all these groups are of type I. Finally we discuss how much of these results remains valid if we omit the connectedness assumption on our linear algebraic groups.

On $L$-packets and depth for $SL_2(K)$ and its inner form

We consider the group $SL_2(K)$, where $K$ is a local non-archimedean field of characteristic two. We prove that the depth of any irreducible representation of $SL_2 (K)$ is larger than the depth of the corresponding Langlands parameter, with equality if and only if the L-parameter is essentially tame. We also work out a classification of all $L$-packets for $SL_2 (K)$ and for its non-split inner form, and we provide explicit formulae for the depths of their $L$-parameters.

Geometric structure for the principal series of a split reductive $p$-adic group with connected centre

Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a split reductive $p$-adic group with connected centre. We show that each Bernstein block in the principal series of $\mathcal{G}$ admits a definite geometric structure, namely that of an extended quotient. For the Iwahori-spherical block, this extended quotient has the form $T//W$ where $T$ is a maximal torus in the Langlands dual group of $\mathcal{G}$ and $W$ is the Weyl group of $\mathcal{G}$.

Characters and growth of admissible representations of reductive p-adic groups

We use coefficient systems on the affine Bruhat-Tits building to study admissible representations of reductive p-adic groups in characteristic not equal to p. We show that the character function is locally constant and provide explicit neighbourhoods of constancy. We estimate the growth of the subspaces of invariants for compact open subgroups.

The principal series of $p$-adic groups with disconnected centre

Let G be a split connected reductive group over a local non-archimedean field. We classify all irreducible complex G-representations in the principal series, irrespective of the (dis)connectedness of the centre of G. This leads to a local Langlands correspondence for principal series representations, which satisfies all expected properties. We also prove that the ABPS conjecture about the geometric structure of Bernstein components is valid throughout the principal series of G.

Hecke algebras for inner forms of p-adic special linear groups

Let F be a non-archimedean local field and let $G^\sharp$ be the group of F-rational points of an inner form of $SL_n$. We study Hecke algebras for all Bernstein components of $G^\sharp$, via restriction from an inner form G of $GL_n (F)$. For any packet of L-indistinguishable Bernstein components, we exhibit an explicit algebra whose module category is equivalent to the associated category of complex smooth $G^\sharp$-representations. This algebra comes from an idempotent in the full Hecke algebra of $G^\sharp$, and the idempotent is derived from a type for G. We show that the Hecke algebras for Bernstein components of $G^\sharp$ are similar to affine Hecke algebras of type A, yet in many cases are not Morita equivalent to any crossed product of an affine Hecke algebra with a finite group.

Depth and the local Langlands correspondence

Let G be an inner form of a general linear group over a non-archimedean local field. We prove that the local Langlands correspondence for G preserves depths. We also show that the local Langlands correspondence for inner forms of special linear groups preserves the depths of essentially tame Langlands parameters.

The local Langlands correspondence for inner forms of $SL_n$

Let F be a non-archimedean local field. We establish the local Langlands correspondence for all inner forms of the group $SL_n (F)$. It takes the form of a bijection between, on the one hand, conjugacy classes of Langlands parameters for $SL_n (F)$ enhanced with an irreducible representation of an S-group and, on the other hand, the union of the spaces of irreducible admissible representations of all inner forms of $SL_n (F)$. An analogous result is shown in the archimedean case. To settle the case where F has positive characteristic, we employ the method of close fields. We prove that this method is compatible with the local Langlands correspondence for inner forms of $GL_n (F)$, when the fields are close enough compared to the depth of the representations.

On the local Langlands correspondence for non-tempered representations

Let G be a reductive p-adic group. We study how a local Langlands correspondence for irreducible tempered G-representations can be extended to a local Langlands correspondence for all irreducible smooth representations of G. We prove that, under a natural condition involving compatibility with unramified twists, this is possible in a canonical way. To this end we introduce analytic R-groups associated to non-tempered essentially square-integrable representations of Levi subgroups of G. We establish the basic properties of these new R-groups, which generalize Knapp--Stein R-groups.

On the classification of irreducible representations of affine Hecke algebras with unequal parameters

Let $R$ be a root datum with affine Weyl group $W^e$, and let $H = H (R,q)$ be an affine Hecke algebra with positive, possibly unequal, parameters $q$. Then $H$ is a deformation of the group algebra $\mathbb C [W^e]$, so it is natural to compare the representation theory of $H$ and of $W^e$. We define a map from irreducible $H$-representations to $W^e$-representations and we show that, when extended to the Grothendieck groups of finite dimensional representations, this map becomes an isomorphism, modulo torsion. The map can be adjusted to a (nonnatural) continuous bijection from the dual space of $H$ to that of $W^e$. We use this to prove the affine Hecke algebra version of a conjecture of Aubert, Baum and Plymen, which predicts a strong and explicit geometric similarity between the dual spaces of $H$ and $W^e$. An important role is played by the Schwartz completion $S = S (R,q)$ of $H$, an algebra whose representations are precisely the tempered $H$-representations. We construct isomorphisms $ζ_ε: S (R,q^ε) \to S (R,q)$ $(ε>0)$ and injection $ζ_0 : S (W^e) = S (R,q^0) \to S (R,q)$, depending continuously on $ε$. Although $ζ_0$ is not surjective, it behaves like an algebra isomorphism in many ways. Not only does $ζ_0$ extend to a bijection on Grothendieck groups of finite dimensional representations, it also induces isomorphisms on topological $K$-theory and on periodic cyclic homology (the first two modulo torsion). This proves a conjecture of Higson and Plymen, which says that the $K$-theory of the $C^*$-completion of an affine Hecke algebra $H (R,q)$ does not depend on the parameter(s) $q$.

Geometric structure and the local Langlands conjecture

We prove that a strengthened form of the local Langlands conjecture is valid throughout the principal series of any connected split reductive $p$-adic group. The method of proof is to establish the presence of a very simple geometric structure, in both the smooth dual and the Langlands parameters. We prove that this geometric structure is present, in the same way, for the general linear group, including all of its inner forms. With these results as evidence, we give a detailed formulation of a general geometric structure conjecture.

Resolutions of tempered representations of reductive p-adic groups

Let G be a reductive group over a non-archimedean local field and let S(G) be its Schwartz algebra. We compare Ext-groups of tempered G-representations in several module categories: smooth G-representations, algebraic S(G)-modules, bornological S(G)-modules and an exact category of S(G)-modules on LF-spaces which contains all admissible S(G)-modules. We simplify the proofs of known comparison theorems for these Ext-groups, due to Meyer and Schneider-Zink. Our method is based on the Bruhat-Tits building of G and on analytic properties of the Schneider-Stuhler resolutions.

Extensions of tempered representations

Let $π, π'$ be irreducible tempered representations of an affine Hecke algebra H with positive parameters. We compute the higher extension groups $Ext_H^n (π,π')$ explicitly in terms of the representations of analytic R-groups corresponding to $π$ and $π'$. The result has immediate applications to the computation of the Euler-Poincaré pairing $EP(π,π')$, the alternating sum of the dimensions of the Ext-groups. The resulting formula for $EP(π,π')$ is equal to Arthur's formula for the elliptic pairing of tempered characters in the setting of reductive p-adic groups. Our proof applies equally well to affine Hecke algebras and to reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields of arbitrary characteristic. This sheds new light on the formula of Arthur and gives a new proof of Kazhdan's orthogonality conjecture for the Euler-Poincaré pairing of admissible characters.

A formula of Arthur and affine Hecke algebras

Let $π, π'$ be tempered representations of an affine Hecke algebra with positive parameters. We study their Euler--Poincaré pairing $EP (π,π')$, the alternating sum of the dimensions of the Ext-groups. We show that $EP (π,π')$ can be expressed in a simple formula involving an analytic R-group, analogous to a formula of Arthur in the setting of reductive p-adic groups. Our proof applies equally well to affine Hecke algebras and to reductive groups over nonarchimedean local fields of arbitrary characteristic.

Discrete series characters for affine Hecke algebras and their formal degrees

We introduce the generic central character of an irreducible discrete series representation of an affine Hecke algebra. Using this invariant we give a new classification of the irreducible discrete series characters for all abstract affine Hecke algebras (except for the types E) with arbitrary positive parameters and we prove an explicit product formula for their formal degrees (in all cases).

The Second Adjointness Theorem for reductive p-adic groups

We prove that the Jacquet restriction functor for a parabolic subgroup of a reductive group over a non-Archimedean local field is right adjoint to the parabolic induction functor for the opposite parabolic subgroup, in the generality of smooth group representations on R-modules for any unital ring R in which the residue field characteristic is invertible. Correction: it turned out that the paper contains a mistake (in Lemma 3.4), which the authors have been unable to fix. This renders the proof of the main theorem incomplete.

Homology of graded Hecke algebras

Let H be a graded Hecke algebra with complex deformation parameters and Weyl group W. We show that the Hochschild, cyclic and periodic cyclic homologies of H are all independent of the parameters, and compute them explicitly. We use this to prove that, if the deformation parameters are real, the collection of irreducible tempered H-modules with real central character forms a Q-basis of the representation ring of W. Our method involves a new interpretation of the periodic cyclic homology of finite type algebras, in terms of the cohomology of a sheaf over the underlying complex affine variety.
