Commutator subgroups and crystallographic quotients of virtual extensions of symmetric groups

The virtual braid group $VB_n$, the virtual twin group $VT_n$ and the virtual triplet group $VL_n$ are extensions of the symmetric group $S_n$, which are motivated by the Alexander-Markov correspondence for virtual knot theories. The kernels of natural epimorphisms of these groups onto the symmetric group $S_n$ are the pure virtual braid group $VP_n$, the pure virtual twin group $PVT_n$ and the pure virtual triplet group $PVL_n$, respectively. In this paper, we investigate commutator subgroups, pure subgroups and crystallographic quotients of these groups. We derive explicit finite presentations of the pure virtual triplet group $PVL_n$, the commutator subgroup $VT_n^{'}$ of $VT_n$ and the commutator subgroup $VL_n^{'}$ of $VL_n$. Our results complete the understanding of these groups, except that of $VB_n^{'}$, for which the existence of a finite presentations is not known for $n \ge 4$. We also prove that $VL_n/PVL_n^{'}$ is a crystallographic group and give an explicit construction of infinitely many torsion elements in it.

Dehn quandles of groups and orientable surfaces

Unifying various constructions of quandles including Coxeter quandles, free quandles, knot quandles of prime knots and Dehn quandles of orientable surfaces, we introduce Dehn quandles of groups with respect to their subsets. It turns out that Dehn quandles are precisely the ones that embed naturally into their enveloping groups. We prove that the enveloping group of the Dehn quandle of a given group with respect to its generating set is a central extension of that group, and that enveloping groups of Dehn quandles of Artin groups and link groups with respect to their standard generating sets are the groups themselves. We discuss orderability of Dehn quandles and prove that free involutory quandles are left orderable, whereas certain generalised Alexander quandles are bi-orderable. Specialising to surfaces, we give generating sets for Dehn quandles of orientable surfaces with punctures and compute their automorphism groups. As applications, we recover a result of Niebrzydowski and Przytycki proving that the knot quandle of the trefoil knot is isomorphic to the Dehn quandle of the torus and also extend a result of Yetter on epimorphisms of Dehn quandles of orientable surfaces onto certain involutory homological quandles.

Finiteness of canonical quotients of Dehn quandles of surfaces

The Dehn quandle of a closed orientable surface is the set of isotopy classes of non-separating simple closed curves with a natural quandle structure arising from Dehn twists. In this paper, we consider finiteness of some canonical quotients of these quandles. For a surface of positive genus, we give a precise description of the 2-quandle of its Dehn quandle. Further, with some exceptions for genus more than two, we determine all values of $n$ for which the $n$-quandle of its Dehn quandle is finite. The result can be thought of as the Dehn quandle analogue of a similar result of Hoste and Shanahan for link quandles. We also compute the size of the smallest non-trivial quandle quotient of the Dehn quandle of a surface. Along the way, we prove that the involutory quotient of an Artin quandle is precisely the corresponding Coxeter quandle and also determine the smallest non-trivial quotient of a braid quandle.

Idempotents, free products and quandle coverings

In this paper, we investigate idempotents in quandle rings and relate them with quandle coverings. We prove that integral quandle rings of quandles of finite type that are non-trivial coverings over nice base quandles admit infinitely many non-trivial idempotents, and give their complete description. We show that the set of all these idempotents forms a quandle in itself. As an application, we deduce that the quandle ring of the knot quandle of a non-trivial long knot admit non-trivial idempotents. We consider free products of quandles and prove that integral quandle rings of free quandles have only trivial idempotents, giving an infinite family of quandles with this property. We also give a description of idempotents in quandle rings of unions and certain twisted unions of quandles.

Structure and automorphisms of pure virtual twin groups

Study of stable isotopy classes of a finite collection of immersed circles without triple or higher intersections on closed oriented surfaces is considered as a planar analogue of virtual knot theory, a far reaching generalisation of classical knot theory. Recent works have established Alexander and Markov theorems in the planar setting. In the classical case, the role of groups is played by twin groups, a class of right-angled Coxeter groups. A new class of groups called virtual twin groups, that extends twin groups in a natural way, plays the role of groups in the virtual case. The virtual twin group $VT_n$ contains the pure virtual twin group $PVT_n$, a planar analogue of the pure Artin braid group. In this paper, we prove that the pure virtual twin group $PVT_n$ is an irreducible right-angled Artin group with trivial center and give it's precise presentation. We show that $PVT_n$ has a decomposition as an iterated semi-direct product of infinite rank free groups. We give a complete description of the automorphism group of $PVT_n$ and establish splitting of natural exact sequences of automorphism groups. As applications, we show that $VT_n$ is residually finite and $PVT_n$ has the $R_\infty$-property.

Enhancements of link colorings via idempotents of quandle rings

We show that quandle rings and their idempotents lead to proper enhancements of the well-known quandle coloring invariant of links in the 3-space. We give explicit examples to show that the new invariants are also stronger than the $\Hom$ quandle invariant when the coloring quandles are medial. We provide computer assisted computations of idempotents for all quandles of order less than six, and also determine the ones for which the set of all idempotents is itself a quandle. The data supports our conjecture about triviality of idempotents of integral quandle rings of finite latin quandles. We also determine Peirce spectra for complex quandle algebras of some small order quandles.

Presentations of Dehn quandles

The paper gives two approaches to write explicit presentations for the class of Dehn quandles using presentations of their underlying groups. The first approach gives finite presentations for Dehn quandles of a class of Garside groups and Gaussian groups. The second approach is for general Dehn quandles when the centralisers of generators of their underlying groups are known. Several examples including Dehn quandles of spherical Artin groups, surface groups and mapping class groups of orientable surfaces are given to illustrate the results.

Quandle cohomology, extensions and automorphisms

The paper establishes new relationship between cohomology, extensions and automorphisms of quandles. We derive a four term exact sequence relating quandle 1-cocycles, second quandle cohomology and certain group of automorphisms of an abelian extension of quandles. A non-abelian counterpart of this sequence involving dynamical cohomology classes is also established, and some applications to lifting of quandle automorphisms are given. Viewing the construction of the conjugation, the core and the generalised Alexander quandle of a group as an adjoint functor of some appropriate functor from the category of quandles to the category of groups, we prove that these functors map extensions of groups to extensions of quandles. Finally, we construct some natural group homomorphisms from the second cohomology of a group to the second cohomology of its core and conjugation quandles.

Orderability of link quandles

The paper develops a general theory of orderability of quandles with a focus on link quandles of tame links and gives some general constructions of orderable quandles. We prove that knot quandles of many fibered prime knots are right-orderable, whereas link quandles of most non-trivial torus links are not right-orderable. As a consequence, we deduce that the knot quandle of the trefoil is neither left nor right orderable. Further, it is proved that link quandles of certain non-trivial positive (or negative) links are not bi-orderable, which includes some alternating knots of prime determinant and alternating Montesinos links. The paper also explores interconnections between orderability of quandles and that of their enveloping groups. The results establish that orderability of link quandles behave quite differently than that of corresponding link groups.

A Wells type exact sequence for non-degenerate unitary solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation

Cycle sets are known to give non-degenerate unitary solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation and linear cycle sets are enriched versions of these algebraic systems. The paper explores the recently developed cohomology and extension theory for linear cycle sets. We derive a four term exact sequence relating 1-cocycles, second cohomology and certain groups of automorphisms arising from central extensions of linear cycle sets. This is an analogue of a similar exact sequence for group extensions known due to Wells. We also compare the exact sequence for linear cycle sets with that for their underlying abelian groups via the forgetful functor and discuss generalities on dynamical 2-cocycles.

Alexander and Markov theorems for virtual doodles

Study of certain isotopy classes of a finite collection of immersed circles without triple or higher intersections on closed oriented surfaces can be thought of as a planar analogue of virtual knot theory where the genus zero case corresponds to classical knot theory. Alexander and Markov theorems for the genus zero case are known where the role of groups is played by twin groups, a class of right angled Coxeter groups with only far commutativity relations. The purpose of this paper is to prove Alexander and Markov theorems for higher genus case where the role of groups is played by a new class of groups called virtual twin groups which extends twin groups in a natural way.

Automorphisms of odd Coxeter groups

An odd Coxeter group $W$ is one which admits a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ for which all the exponents $m_{ij}$ are either odd or infinity. The paper investigates the family of odd Coxeter groups whose associated labeled graphs $\mathcal{V}_{(W,S)}$ are trees. It is known that two Coxeter groups in this family are isomorphic if and only if they admit Coxeter systems having the same rank and the same multiset of finite exponents. In particular, each group in this family is isomorphic to a group that admits a Coxeter system whose associated labeled graph is a star shaped tree. We give the complete description of the automorphism group of this group, and derive a sufficient condition for the splitting of the automorphism group as a semi-direct product of the inner and the outer automorphism groups. As applications, we prove that Coxeter groups in this family satisfy the $R_\infty$-property and are (co)-Hopfian. We compare structural properties, automorphism groups, $\R_\infty$-property and (co)-Hopfianity of a special odd Coxeter group whose only finite exponent is three with the braid group and the twin group.

Some remarks on twin groups

The twin group $T_n$ is a right angled Coxeter group generated by $n- 1$ involutions and having only far commutativity relations. These groups can be thought of as planar analogues of Artin braid groups. In this note, we study some properties of twin groups whose analogues are well-known for Artin braid groups. We give an algorithm for two twins to be equivalent under individual Markov moves. Further, we show that twin groups $T_n$ have $R_\infty$-property and are not co-Hopfian for $n \ge 3$.

Exterior and symmetric (co)homology of groups

The paper investigates exterior and symmetric (co)homologies of groups. We introduce symmetric homology of groups and compute exterior and symmetric (co)homologies of some finite groups. We also compare the classical, exterior and symmetric (co)homologies. Finally, we derive restriction and corestriction homomorphisms for exterior cohomology

Conjugacy classes and automorphisms of twin groups

The twin group $T_n$ is a right angled Coxeter group generated by $n-1$ involutions and the pure twin group $PT_n$ is the kernel of the natural surjection from $T_n$ onto the symmetric group on $n$ symbols. In this paper, we investigate some structural aspects of these groups. We derive a formula for the number of conjugacy classes of involutions in $T_n$, which quite interestingly, is related to the well-known Fibonacci sequence. We also derive a recursive formula for the number of $z$-classes of involutions in $T_n$. We give a new proof of the structure of $\Aut(T_n)$ for $n \ge 3$, and show that $T_n$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $\Aut(PT_n)$ for $n \geq 4$. Finally, we construct a representation of $T_n$ to $\Aut(F_n)$ for $n \ge 2$.

Zero-divisors and idempotents in quandle rings

The paper develops further the theory of quandle rings which was introduced by the authors in a recent work. Orderability of quandles is defined and many interesting examples of orderable quandles are given. It is proved that quandle rings of left or right orderable quandles which are semi-latin have no zero-divisors. Idempotents in quandle rings of certain interesting quandles are computed and used to determine sets of maximal quandles in these rings. Understanding of idempotents is further applied to determine automorphism groups of these quandle rings. Also, commutator width of quandle rings is introduced and computed in a few cases. The paper conclude by commenting on relation of quandle rings with other well-known non-associative algebras.

Derivations of quandles

The aim of this paper is to propose a theory of derivations for quandles. Given a quandle $A$ admitting an action by a quandle $Q$, derivations from $Q$ to $A$ are introduced as twisted analogues of quandle homomorphisms. It is shown that for each quandle $Q$ there exists a unique $Q$-quandle $\mathcal{A}_Q$ (the derived quandle of $Q$) such that derivations from $Q$ to any $Q$-quandle $A$ are in bijective correspondence with $Q$-quandle homomorphisms from $\mathcal{A}_Q$ to $A$. Further, it is proved that the set of all derivations to an abelian $Q$-quandle $A$ has the structure of an abelian quandle, and inherits many other properties from $A$. In the end, the ideas are extended to the setting of virtual quandles.

Link quandles are residually finite

Residual finiteness is known to be an important property of groups appearing in combinatorial group theory and low dimensional topology. In a recent work [2] residual finiteness of quandles was introduced, and it was proved that free quandles and knot quandles are residually finite. In this paper, we extend these results and prove that free products of residually finite quandles are residually finite provided their associated groups are residually finite. As associated groups of link quandles are link groups, which are known to be residually finite, it follows that link quandles are residually finite.
