Free quandles and knot quandles are residually finite

In this note, residual finiteness of quandles is defined and investigated. It is proved that free quandles and knot quandles of tame knots are residually finite and Hopfian. Residual finiteness of quandles arising from residually finite groups (conjugation, core and Alexander quandles) is established. Further, residual finiteness of automorphism groups of some residually finite quandles is also discussed.

General constructions of biquandles and their symmetries

Biquandles are algebraic objects with two binary operations whose axioms encode the generalized Reidemeister moves for virtual knots and links. These objects also provide set-theoretic solutions of the well-known Yang-Baxter equation. The first half of this paper proposes some natural constructions of biquandles from groups and from their simpler counterparts, namely, quandles. We completely determine all words in the free group on two generators that give rise to (bi)quandle structures on all groups. We give some novel constructions of biquandles on unions and products of quandles, including what we refer as the holomorph biquandle of a quandle. These constructions give a wealth of solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. We also show that for nice quandle coverings a biquandle structure on the base can be lifted to a biquandle structure on the covering. In the second half of the paper, we determine automorphism groups of these biquandles in terms of associated quandles showing elegant relationships between the symmetries of the underlying structures.

Free actions of some compact groups on Milnor manifolds

In this paper, we investigate free actions of some compact groups on cohomology real and complex Milnor manifolds. More precisely, we compute the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the orbit space of an arbitrary free $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and $\mathbb{S}^1$-action on a compact Hausdorff space with mod 2 cohomology algebra of a real or a complex Milnor manifold. As applications, we deduce some Borsuk-Ulam type results for equivariant maps between spheres and these spaces. For the complex case, we obtain a lower bound on the Schwarz genus, which further establishes the existence of coincidence points for maps to the Euclidean plane.

Structural aspects of twin and pure twin groups

The twin group $T_n$ is a Coxeter group generated by $n-1$ involutions and the pure twin group $PT_n$ is the kernel of the natural surjection of $T_n$ onto the symmetric group on $n$ letters. In this paper, we investigate structural aspects of twin and pure twin groups. We prove that the twin group $T_n$ decomposes into a free product with amalgamation for $n>4$. It is shown that the pure twin group $PT_n$ is free for $n=3,4$, and not free for $n\ge 6$. We determine a generating set for $PT_n$, and give an upper bound for its rank. We also construct a natural faithful representation of $T_4$ into $\operatorname{Aut}(F_7)$. In the end, we propose virtual and welded analogues of these groups and some directions for future work.

General Bourgin-Yang theorems

We describe a unified approach to estimating the dimension of $f^{-1}(A)$ for any $G$-equivariant map $f \colon X \to Y$ and any closed $G$-invariant subset $A\subseteq Y$ in terms of connectivity of $X$ and dimension of $Y$, where $G$ is either a cyclic group of order $p^k$, a $p$-torus ($p$ a prime), or a torus.

Quandle rings

In this paper, a theory of quandle rings is proposed for quandles analogous to the classical theory of group rings for groups, and interconnections between quandles and associated quandle rings are explored.

Equivariant maps between representation spheres

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group. We prove that if $V$ and $W$ are orthogonal $G$-representations such that $V^G=W^G=\{0\}$, then a $G$-equivariant map $S(V) \to S(W)$ exists provided that $\dim V^H \leq \dim W^H$ for any closed subgroup $H\subseteq G$. This result is complemented by a reinterpretation in terms of divisibility of certain Euler classes when $G$ is a torus.

Automorphism groups of quandles arising from groups

Let $G$ be a group and $φ\in \Aut(G)$. Then the set $G$ equipped with the binary operation $a*b=φ(ab^{-1})b$ gives a quandle structure on $G$, denoted by $\Alex(G, φ)$ and called the generalised Alexander quandle. When $G$ is additive abelian and $φ= -\id_G$, then $\Alex(G, φ)$ is the well-known Takasaki quandle. In this paper, we determine the group of automorphisms and inner automorphisms of Takasaki quandles of abelian groups with no 2-torsion, and Alexander quandles of finite abelian groups with respect to fixed-point free automorphisms. As an application, we prove that if $G\cong (\mathbb{Z}/p \mathbb{Z})^n$ and $φ$ is multiplication by a non-trivial unit of $\mathbb{Z}/p \mathbb{Z}$, then $\Aut\big(\Alex(G, φ)\big)$ acts doubly transitively on $\Alex(G, φ)$. This generalises a recent result of \cite{Ferman} for quandles of prime order.

Automorphism groups of quandles and related groups

In this paper we study different questions concerning automorphisms of quandles. For a conjugation quandle $Q={\rm Conj}(G)$ of a group $G$ we determine several subgroups of ${\rm Aut}(Q)$ and find necessary and sufficient conditions when these subgroups coincide with the whole group ${\rm Aut}(Q)$. In particular, we prove that ${\rm Aut}({\rm Conj}(G))={\rm Z}(G)\rtimes {\rm Aut}(G)$ if and only if either ${\rm Z}(G)=1$ or $G$ is one of the groups $\mathbb{Z}_2$, $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$ or $\mathbb{Z}_3$. For a big list of Takasaki quandles $T(G)$ of an abelian group $G$ with $2$-torsion we prove that the group of inner automorphisms ${\rm Inn}(T(G))$ is a Coxeter group. We study automorphisms of certain extensions of quandles and determine some interesting subgroups of the automorphism groups of these quandles. Also we classify finite quandles $Q$ with $3\leq k$-transitive action of ${\rm Aut}(Q)$.

Some remarks on the parametrized Borsuk-Ulam theorem

Given a locally trivial fibre bundle $E \to B$ (with fibres and base finite complexes), an orthogonal real line bundle $λ$ over $E$ and a real vector bundle $ξ$ over $B$, we consider a fibrewise map $f : S(λ) \to ξ$ over $B$ defined on the unit sphere bundle of $λ$. Following the fundamental work of Jaworowski and Dold on the parametrized Borsuk-Ulam theorem, we investigate lower bounds on the cohomological dimension of the set of points $v$ in $S(λ)$ such that $f(v) = f(-v)$.

Automorphisms of pure braid Groups

In this paper, we investigate the structure of the automorphism groups of pure braid groups. We prove that, for $n>3$, $\Aut(P_n)$ is generated by the subgroup $\Aut_c(P_n)$ of central automorphisms of $P_n$, the subgroup $\Aut(B_n)$ of restrictions of automorphisms of $B_n$ on $P_n$ and one extra automorphism $w_n$. We also investigate the lifting and extension problem for automorphisms of some well-known exact sequences arising from braid groups, and prove that that answers are negative in most cases. Specifically, we prove that no non-trivial central automorphism of $P_n$ can be extended to an automorphism of $B_n$.

Extensions and automorphisms of Lie algebras

Let $0 \to A \to L \to B \to 0$ be a short exact sequence of Lie algebras over a field $F$, where $A$ is abelian. We show that the obstruction for a pair of automorphisms in $\Aut(A) \times \Aut(B)$ to be induced by an automorphism in $\Aut(L)$ lies in the Lie algebra cohomology $\Ha^2(B;A)$. As a consequence, we obtain a four term exact sequence relating automorphisms, derivations and cohomology of Lie algebras. We also obtain a more explicit necessary and sufficient condition for a pair of automorphisms in $\Aut\big(L_{n,2}^{(1)}\big) \times \Aut\big(L_{n,2}^{ab}\big)$ to be induced by an automorphism in $\Aut\big(L_{n,2}\big)$, where $L_{n,2}$ is a free nilpotent Lie algebra of rank $n$ and step $2$.

Palindromic Automorphisms of Free Nilpotent Groups

In this paper, we initiate the study of palindromic automorphisms of groups that are free in some variety. More specifically, we define palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups and show that the set of such automorphisms is a group. We find a generating set for the group of palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups of step 2 and 3. In particular, we obtain a generating set for the group of central palindromic automorphisms of these groups. In the end, we determine central palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups of step 3 which satisfy the necessary condition of Bryant-Gupta-Levin-Mochizuki for a central automorphism to be tame.

Palindromic Automorphisms of Free Groups

Let $F_n$ be the free group of rank $n$ with free basis $X=\{x_1,\dots,x_n \}$. A palindrome is a word in $X^{\pm 1}$ that reads the same backwards as forwards. The palindromic automorphism group $ΠA_n$ of $F_n$ consists of those automorphisms that map each $x_i$ to a palindrome. In this paper, we investigate linear representations of $ΠA_n$, and prove that $ΠA_2$ is linear. We obtain conjugacy classes of involutions in $ΠA_2$, and investigate residual nilpotency of $ΠA_n$ and some of its subgroups. Let $IA_n$ be the group of those automorphisms of $F_n$ that act trivially on the abelianisation, $P I_n$ be the palindromic Torelli group of $F_n$, and $E ΠA_n$ be the elementary palindromic automorphism group of $F_n$. We prove that $PI_n=IA_n \cap E ΠA_n'$. This result strengthens a recent result of Fullarton.

Some Problems on Knots, Braids, and Automorphism Groups

We present and discuss some open problems formulated by participants of the International Workshop "Knots, Braids, and Auto\-mor\-phism Groups" held in Novosibirsk, 2014. Problems are related to palindromic and commutator widths of groups; properties of Brunnian braids and two-colored braids, corresponding to an amalgamation of groups; extreme properties of hyperbolic 3-orbifold groups, relations between inner and quasi-inner automorphisms of groups; and Staic's construction of symmetric cohomology of groups.

Free 2-rank of symmetry of products of Milnor manifolds

A real Milnor manifold is the non-singular hypersurface of degree $(1,1)$ in the product of two real projective spaces. These manifolds were introduced by Milnor to give generators for the unoriented cobordism algebra, and they admit free actions by elementary abelian 2-groups. In this paper, we obtain some results on the free 2-rank of symmetry of products of finitely many real Milnor manifolds under the assumption that the induced action on mod 2 cohomology is trivial. Similar results are obtained for complex Milnor manifolds which are defined analogously. Here the free 2-rank of symmetry of a topological space is the maximal rank of an elementary abelian 2-group which acts freely on that space.

Symmetric continuous cohomology of topological groups

In this paper, we introduce a symmetric continuous cohomology of topological groups. This is obtained by topologizing a recent construction due to Staic (J. Algebra 322 (2009), 1360-1378), where a symmetric cohomology of abstract groups is constructed. We give a characterization of topological group extensions that correspond to elements of the second symmetric continuous cohomology. We also show that the symmetric continuous cohomology of a profinite group with coefficients in a discrete module is equal to the direct limit of the symmetric cohomology of finite groups. In the end, we also define symmetric smooth cohomology of Lie groups and prove similar results.

Cohomology algebra of orbit spaces of free involutions on lens spaces

Let $G$ be a group acting continuously on a space $X$ and let $X/G$ be its orbit space. Determining the topological or cohomological type of the orbit space $X/G$ is a classical problem in the theory of transformation groups. In this paper, we consider this problem for cohomology lens spaces. Let $X$ be a finitistic space having the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the lens space $L_p^{2m-1}(q_1,...,q_m)$. Then we classify completely the possible mod 2 cohomology algebra of orbit spaces of arbitrary free involutions on $X$. We also give examples of spaces realizing the possible cohomology algebras. In the end, we give an application of our results to non-existence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant map $\mathbb{S}^n \to X$.
