Globally defined Carroll symmetry of gravitational waves

The local Carroll symmetry of a gravitational wave found in Baldwin-Jeffery-Rosen coordinates is extended to a globally defined one by switching to Brinkmann coordinates. Two independent globally defined solutions of a Sturm-Liouville equation allow us to describe both the symmetries (translations and Carroll boosts) and the geodesic motions. One of them satisfies particular initial conditions which imply zero initial momentum, while the other does not. Pure displacement arises when the latter is turned off by requiring the momentum to vanish and when the wave parameters take, in addition, some particular values which correspond to having an integer half-wave number. The relation to the Schwarzian derivative is highlighted. We illustrate our general statements by the P\"oschl-Teller profile.

The $1/c$ expansion of general relativity in a $3+1$ formulation, revisited

We study the $1/c$ expansion of general relativity within a formulation that is compatible with both the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner and the Kol-Smolkin decompositions. The Einstein-Hilbert action takes a common form for those decompositions as they are dual to each other. We first develop a method to expand this generic form without choosing a particular slicing and then push the expansion up to $c^{-3}$ order within this novel approach. Next, we apply our technique to the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition and expand it up to $c^{-3}$ order explicitly. In order to demonstrate the applicability of our method and to highlight the duality at the level of expansion, we also perform the expansion in the Kol-Smolkin decomposition up to $c^{-1}$ order. Lastly, we make some all-order observations.

Displacement Memory Effect from Supersymmetry

We explain the recent results on the displacement memory effect (DME) of plane gravitational waves using supersymmetric quantum mechanics. This novel approach stems from that both the geodesic and the Schr\"odinger equations are Sturm-Liouville boundary value problems. Supersymmetry provides a unified framework for the P\"oschl-Teller and the Scarf profiles and yields the critical values of the associated wave amplitudes for DME in a natural way. Within our framework, we obtain a compact formula for DME in terms of the asymptotic values of the superpotential and the geodesics. In addition, this new technique enables us to build plane and gravitational waves with 2-transverse directions using superpartner potentials. Lastly, we study DME within a singular wave profile inspired by supersymmetric quantum mechanics, which demonstrates the broader applicability of our method.

Diffeomorphism Invariance Breaking in Gravity and Cosmological Evolution

Diffeomorphism invariance breaking has been investigated in the literature in several contexts, including emergent General Relativity (GR). If GR emerges from an underlying theory without diffeomorphism invariance, there may be small violations of this symmetry at low energies. Since such small violations should not cause instabilities in cosmological evolution, it is a suitable framework for examining such symmetry-breaking effects. In this paper, the cosmological evolution with broken diffeomorphism invariance is investigated in the (modified) FLRW spacetime in the effective theory framework. The GR Lagrangian is augmented with all diffeomorphism-breaking but Lorentz-invariant terms in the leading order, namely, those involving two derivatives. The magnitudes of (minor) violations are kept general modulo the conditions arising in the linearized theory. The analytic solutions of the scale factor in the full non-linear theory for the single-component universes are attempted; the radiation and vacuum solutions are found analytically, whereas the matter solution is worked out numerically since an analytic solution does not exist in the required form. It is observed that the solutions smoothly connect to those of GR in the limit of vanishing symmetry-breaking. The more realistic, two-component, and three-component universes are numerically studied, and no signs of singular behavior are observed: minor diffeomorphism-violating modifications to GR at the level of two derivatives do not cause instabilities in the basic cosmological evolution.

Various disguises of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator

Beginning with a simple set of planar equations, we discuss novel realizations of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator in various contexts. First, due to the bi-Hamiltonian character of this model, we develop a Hamiltonian approach for the Eisenhart-Duval lift of the related dynamics. We apply this approach to the previously worked example of a circularly polarized periodic gravitational wave. Then, we present our further results. Firstly, we show that the transverse dynamics of the Lukash plane wave and a complete gravitational wave pulse can also lead to the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator. We express the related Carroll Killing vectors in terms of the Pais-Uhlenbeck frequencies and derive extra integrals of motion from the conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry. In addition, we find that the 3+1 dimensional Penning trap can be canonically mapped to the 6th order Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator. We also carry the problem to the non-commutative plane. Lastly, we discuss other examples like the motion of a charged particle under electromagnetic field created with double copy.

A 3+1 formulation of the 1/c expansion of General Relativity

Expanding General Relativity in the inverse speed of light, 1/c, leads to a nonrelativistic gravitational theory that extends the Post-Newtonian expansion by the inclusion of additional strong gravitational potentials. This theory has a fully covariant formulation in the language of Newton-Cartan geometry but we revisit it here in a 3+1 formulation. The appropriate 3+1 formulation of General Relativity is one first described by Kol and Smolkin (KS), rather than the better known Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. As we review, the KS formulation is dual to the ADM formulation in that the role of tangent and co-tangent spaces get interchanged. In this 3+1 formulation the 1/c expansion can be performed in a more systematic and efficient fashion, something we use to extend the computation of the effective Lagrangian beyond what was previously achieved and to make a number of new all order observations.

Marchenko method with incomplete data and singular nucleon scattering

We apply the Marchenko method of quantum inverse scattering to study nucleon scattering problems. Assuming a $β/r^2$ type repulsive core and comparing our results to the Reid93 phenomenological potential we estimate the constant $β$, determining the singularity strength, in various spin/isospin channels. Instead of using Bargmann type S-matrices which allows only integer singularity strength, here we consider an analytical approach based on the incomplete data method, which is suitable for fractional singularity strengths as well.

Neutron-proton scattering and singular potentials

We consider a Bargmann-type rational parametrization of the nucleon scattering phase shifts. Applying Marchenko's method of quantum inverse scattering we show that the scattering data suggest a singular repulsive core of the potential of the form $2/r^2$ and $6/r^2$ in natural units, for the ${}^3S_1$ and ${}^1S_0$ channels respectively. The simplest solution in the ${}^3S_1$ channel contains three parameters only but reproduces all features of the potential and bound state wave function within one percent error. We also consider the ${}^3S_1$-${}^3D_1$ coupled channel problem with the coupled channel Marchenko inversion method.

Optical helicity and Hertz vectors

We study the conserved quantity associated with the dual symmetry of the Maxwell equations, called the optical helicity, by means of transverse Hertz vectors. In the presence of charges, its evolution yields the integral of $\bm{E}\cdot\bm{B}$ which is the anomaly term for chiral fermions. We also discuss the helicity change in condensed matter systems where topological magnetoelectric effect emerges. An alternative expression of the optical helicity is also found. Lastly, a dual symmetric Hertz Lagrangian is constructed and its conserved charge is derived.

Topological Numbers and the Weyl Semimetal

Generalized Dirac monopoles in momentum space are constructed in even d+1 dimensions from the Weyl Hamiltonian in terms of Green's functions. In 3+1 spacetime dimensions, the (unit) charge of the monopole is equal to both the winding number and the Chern number, expressed as the integral of the Berry curvature. Based on the equivalence of the Chern and winding numbers, a chirally coupled field theory action is proposed for the Weyl semimetal phase. At the one loop order, the effective action yields both the chiral magnetic effect and the anomalous Hall effect. The Chern number appears as a coefficient in the conductivity, thus emphasizes the role of topology. The anomalous contribution of chiral fermions to transport phenomena is reflected as the gauge anomaly with the topological term $(\bm{E}\cdot\bm{B})$. Relevance of monopoles and Chern numbers for the semiclassical chiral kinetic theory is also discussed.

Effective potential for relativistic scattering

We consider quantum inverse scattering with singular potentials and calculate the Sine-Gordon model effective potential in the laboratory and centre-of-mass frames. The effective potentials are frame dependent but closely resemble the zero-momentum potential of the equivalent Ruijsenaars-Schneider model.

A Semiclassical Formulation of the Chiral Magnetic Effect and Chiral Anomaly in Even d+1 Dimensions

In terms of the matrix valued Berry gauge field strength for the Weyl Hamiltonian in any even spacetime dimensions a symplectic form whose elements are matrices in spin indices is introduced. Definition of the volume form is modified appropriately. A simple method of finding the path integral measure and the chiral current in the presence of external electromagnetic fields is presented. It is shown that within this new approach the chiral magnetic effect as well as the chiral anomaly in even d+1 dimensions are accomplished straightforwardly.

Topological Concepts for the Weyl Hamiltonians with the Berry Gauge Field

The winding numbers for the even d+1 spacetime dimensional Weyl Hamiltonians are calculated in terms of the related Green's functions. It is shown that these winding numbers result in the divergence of the Dirac monopole fields, hence they are equal to the unit topological charge. It is demonstrated that the winding numbers are also equal to the Chern numbers which are expressed as the integral of the Berry field strength. Explicit calculations are presented for the 3+1 and 5+1 dimensional cases. Relevance of these topological invariants for the physical systems like the semiclassical chiral kinetic theory are discussed.

The Effective field theory of 2+1 dimensional topological insulator in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction

2+1 dimensional topological insulator described by the Kane-Mele model in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction is considered. The effective action of the external fields coupled to electromagnetic and spin degrees of freedom is accomplished within this model. The Hamiltonian methods are adopted to provide the coefficients appearing in the action. It is demonstrated straightforwardly that the coefficients of the Chern-Simons terms are given by the first Chern number attained through the related non-Abelian Berry gauge field. The effective theory which we obtain is in accord with the existence of the spin Hall phase where the value of the spin Hall conductivity is very close to the quantized one.
