Probing spin and orbital Kondo effects with a mesoscopic interferometer

We investigate theoretically the transport properties of a closed Aharonov-Bohm interferometer containing two quantum dots in the strong coupling regime. We find two distinct physical scenarios depending on the strength of the interdot Coulomb interaction. When the interdot Coulomb interaction is negligible only spin fluctuations are important and each dot develops a Kondo resonance at the Fermi level independently of the applied magnetic flux. The transport is characterized by the interference of these two independent Kondo resonances. On the contrary, for large interdot interaction, only one electron can be accommodated onto the double dot system. In this situation, not only the spin can fluctuate but also the orbital degree of freedom (the pseudo-spin). As a result, we find different ground states depending on the value of the applied flux. When $ϕ=π$ (mod $2π$) ($ϕ=2πΦ/Φ_0$, where $Φ$ is applied flux, and $Φ_0=h/e$ the flux quantum) the electronic transport can take place via simultaneous correlations in the spin and pseudo-spin sectors, leading to the highly symmetric SU(4) Kondo state. Nevertheless, we find situations with $ϕ>0$ (mod $2π$) where the pseudo-spin quantum number is not conserved during tunneling events, giving rise to the common SU(2) Kondo state with an enhanced Kondo temperature. We investigate the crossover between both ground states and discuss possible experimental signatures of this physics as a function of the applied magnetic flux.

Shot Noise and Full Counting Statistics from Non-equilibrium Plasmons in Luttinger-Liquid Junctions

We consider a quantum wire double junction system with each wire segment described by a spinless Luttinger model, and study theoretically shot noise in this system in the sequential tunneling regime. We find that the non-equilibrium plasmonic excitations in the central wire segment give rise to qualitatively different behavior compared to the case with equilibrium plasmons. In particular, shot noise is greatly enhanced by them, and exceeds the Poisson limit. We show that the enhancement can be explained by the emergence of several current-carrying processes, and that the effect disappears if the channels effectively collapse to one due to, {\em e.g.}, fast plasmon relaxation processes.

Nonequilibrium plasmons and transport properties of a double--junction quantum wire

We study theoretically the current-voltage characteristics, shot noise, and full counting statistics of a quantum wire double barrier structure. We model each wire segment by a spinless Luttinger liquid. Within the sequential tunneling approach, we describe the system's dynamics using a master equation. We show that at finite bias the non-equilibrium distribution of plasmons in the central wire segment leads to increased average current, enhanced shot noise, and full counting statistics corresponding to a super-Poissonian process. These effects are particularly pronounced in the strong interaction regime, while in the non-interacting case we recover results obtained earlier using detailed balance arguments.

SU(4) Kondo Effect in Carbon Nanotubes

We investigate theoretically the non-equilibrium transport properties of carbon nanotube quantum dots. Owing to the two-dimensional band structure of graphene, a double orbital degeneracy plays the role of a pseudo-spin, which is entangled with the spin. Quantum fluctuations between these four degrees of freedom result in an SU(4) Kondo effect at low temperatures. This exotic Kondo effect manifests as a four-peak splitting in the non-linear conductance when an axial magnetic field is applied.

Ballistic spin currents in mesoscopic metal/In(Ga)As/metal junctions

We investigate the ballistic spin transport through a two-dimensional mesoscopic metal/semiconductor/metal double junctions in the presence of spin-orbit interactions. It is shown that \emph{real} longitudinal and/or transverse spin currents can flow in the presence of the Rashba and Dresselhaus terms.

Kondo Effect and Josephson Current through a Quantum Dot between Two Superconductors

We investigate the supercurrent through a quantum dot for the whole range of couplings using the numerical renormalization group method. We find that the Josephson current switches abruptly from a $π$- to a 0-phase as the coupling increases. At intermediate couplings the total spin in the ground state depends on the phase difference between the two superconductors. Our numerical results can explain the crossover in the conductance observed experimentally by Buitelaar \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{89}, 256 801 (2002)].

Kondo effect in a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads: A numerical renormalization group analysis

We investigate the effects of spin-polarized leads on the Kondo physics of a quantum dot using the numerical renormalization group method. Our study demonstrates in an unambiguous way that the Kondo effect is not necessarily suppressed by the lead polarization: While the Kondo effect is quenched for the asymmetric Anderson model, it survives even for finite polarizations in the regime where charge fluctuations are negligible. We propose the linear tunneling magnetoresistance as an experimental signature of these behaviors. We also report on the influence of spin-flip processes.

Geometric Quantum Computation on Solid-State Qubits

An adiabatic cyclic evolution of control parameters of a quantum system ends up with a holonomic operation on the system, determined entirely by the geometry in the parameter space. The operation is given either by a simple phase factor (a Berry phase) or a non-Abelian unitary operator depending on the degeneracy of the eigenspace of the Hamiltonian. Geometric quantum computation is a scheme to use such holonomic operations rather than the conventional dynamic operations to manipulate quantum states for quantum information processing. Here we propose a geometric quantum computation scheme which can be realized with current technology on nanoscale Josephson-junction networks, known as a promising candidate for solid-state quantum computer.

Quantum Dissipative Dynamics of the Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope in the Single-Spin Detection Limit

We study a model of a magnetic resonance force microscope (MRFM) based on the cyclic adiabatic inversion technique as a high-resolution tool to detect single electron spins. We investigate the quantum dynamics of spin and cantilever in the presence of coupling to an environment. To obtain the reduced dynamics of the combined system of spin and cantilever, we use the Feynman-Vernon influence functional and get results valid at any temperature as well as at arbitrary system-bath coupling strength. We propose that the MRFM can be used as a quantum measurement device, i.e., not only to detect the modulus of the spin but also its direction.

Quantum Phase Transitions and Persistent Currents in Josephson-Junction Ladders

In this work we study quantum phase transitions and persistent currents in capacitively coupled one-dimensional Josephson-junction arrays. We will focus particularly on the roles of exciton-like pairs in the strong coupling limit in the presence of external gate charges and magnetic fluxes. We use the numerical density-matrix renormalization group method for the study in the full range of values of gate charge and magnetic flux. To clarify the various effects, we report the pair correlation functions and the exciton densities as welll as the persistent current.

Kondo Effect of Quantum Dots in the Quantum Hall Regime

Quantum dots in the quantum Hall regime can have pairs of single Slater determinant states that are degenerate in energy. We argue that these pairs of many body states may give rise to a Kondo effect which can be mapped into an ordinary Kondo effect in a fictitious magnetic field. We report on several properties of this Kondo effect using scaling and numerical renormalization group analysis. We suggest an experiment to investigate this Kondo effect.

Effect of Quantum Fluctuations in an Ising System on Small-World Networks

We study quantum Ising spins placed on small-world networks. A simple model is considered in which the coupling between any given pair of spins is a nonzero constant if they are linked in the small-world network and zero otherwise. By applying a transverse magnetic field, we have investigated the effect of quantum fluctuations. Our numerical analysis shows that the quantum fluctuations do not alter the universality class at the ferromagnetic phase transition, which is of the mean-field type. The transition temperature is reduced by the quantum fluctuations and eventually vanishes at the critical transverse field $Δ_c$. With increasing rewiring probability, $Δ_c$ is shown to be enhanced.

Charge and current fluctuations in a superconducting single electron transistor near a Cooper pair resonance

We analyze charge tunneling statistics and current noise in a superconducting single-electron transistor in a regime where the Josephson-quasiparticle cycle is the dominant mechanism of transport. Due to the interplay between Coulomb blockade and Josephson coherence, the probability distribution for tunneling events strongly deviates from a Poissonian and displays a pronounced even--odd asymmetry in the number of transmitted charges. The interplay between charging and coherence is reflected also in the zero-frequency current noise which is significantly quenched when the quasi-particle tunneling rates are comparable to the coherent Cooper-pair oscillation frequency. Furthermore the finite frequency spectrum shows a strong enhancement near the resonant transition frequency for Josephson tunneling.

Shot noise for resonant Cooper pair tunneling

We study intrinsic noise of current in a superconducting single-electron transistor, taking into account both coherence effects and Coulomb interaction near a Cooper-pair resonance. Due to this interplay, the statistics of tunneling events deviates from the Poisson distribution and, more important, it shows even-odd asymmetry in the transmitted charge. The zero-frequency noise is suppressed significantly when the quasiparticle tunneling rates are comparable to the coherent oscillation frequency of Cooper pairs.

Coherent oscillations in a Cooper-pair box

This paper is devoted to an analysis of the experiment by Nakamura {\it et al.} (Nature {\bf 398}, 786 (1999)) on the quantum state control in Josephson junctions devices. By considering the relevant processes involved in the detection of the charge state of the box and a realistic description of the gate pulse we are able to analyze some aspects of the experiment (like the amplitude of the measurement current) in a quantitative way.

Spatiotemporal Stochastic Resonance in Fully Frustrated Josephson Ladders

We consider a Josephson-junction ladder in an external magnetic field with half flux quantum per plaquette. When driven by external currents, periodic in time and staggered in space, such a fully frustrated system is found to display spatiotemporal stochastic resonance under the influence of thermal noise. Such resonance behavior is investigated both numerically and analytically, which reveals significant effects of anisotropy and yields rich physics.

Spin-Dependent Josephson Current through Double Quantum Dots and Measurement of Entangled Electron States

We study a double quantum dot each dot of which is tunnel-coupled to superconducting leads. In the Coulomb blockade regime, a spin-dependent Josephson coupling between two superconductors is induced, as well as an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange coupling between the spins on the double dot which can be tuned by the superconducting phase difference. We show that the correlated spin states-singlet or triplets-on the double dot can be probed via the Josephson current in a dc-SQUID setup.

Anderson-type model for a molecule adsorbed on a metal surface

We investigate a modified Anderson model to study the local density of states (LDOS) of a molecular wire adsorbed on a metal. Using a self-consistent mean-field type approach we find an exponential decay of the LDOS along the molecule. A repulsive on-site interaction on the molecule suppresses the tunneling and decreases the characteristic decay length.
