Charge Frustration Effects in Capacitively Coupled Two-Dimensional Josephson-Junction Arrays

We investigate the quantum phase transitions in two capacitively coupled two-dimensional Josephson-junction arrays with charge frustration. The system is mapped onto the S=1 and $S=1/2$ anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnets near the particle-hole symmetry line and near the maximal-frustration line, respectively, which are in turn argued to be effectively described by a single quantum phase model. Based on the resulting model, it is suggested that near the maximal frustration line the system may undergo a quantum phase transition from the charge-density wave to the super-solid phase, which displays both diagonal and off- diagonal long-range order.

Cotunneling Transport and Quantum Phase Transitions in Coupled Josephson-Junction Chains with Charge Frustration

We investigate the quantum phase transitions in two capacitively coupled chains of ultra-small Josephson-junctions, with emphasis on the external charge effects. The particle-hole symmetry of the system is broken by the gate voltage applied to each superconducting island, and the resulting induced charge introduces frustration to the system. Near the maximal-frustration line, where the system is transformed into a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain, cotunneling of the particles along the two chains is shown to play a major role in the transport and to drive a quantum phase transition out of the charge-density wave insulator, as the Josephson-coupling energy is increased. We also argue briefly that slightly off the symmetry line, the universality class of the transition remains the same as that right on the line, still being driven by the particle-hole pairs.

Quantum Phase Transitions in Capacitively Coupled Two-Dimensional Josephson-Junction Arrays

Quantum-phase transitions in two layers of ultrasmall Josephson junctions, coupled capacitively with each other, are investigated. As the interlayer capacitance is increased, the system at zero temperature is found to exhibit an insulator-to-superconductor transition. It is shown that, unlike one-dimensional arrays with a similar coupling configuration, the transition cannot be accounted for exclusively by particle-hole pairs.

Current responses and voltage fluctuations in Josephson-junction systems

We consider arrays of Josephson junctions as well as single junctions in both the classical and quantum-mechanical regimes, and examine the generalized (frequency-dependent) resistance, which describes the dynamic responses of such Josephson-junction systems to external currents. It is shown that the generalized resistance and the power spectrum of voltage fluctuations are related via the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Implications of the obtained relations are also discussed in various experimental situations.

Capacitively coupled Josephson-junction chains: straight and slanted coupling

Two chains of ultrasmall Josephson junctions, coupled capacitively with each other in the two different ways, straight and slanted coupling, are considered. As the coupling capacitance increases, regardless of the coupling scheme, the transport of particle-hole pairs in the system is found to drive the quantum-phase transition at zero temperature, which is a insulator-to-superfluid transition of the particle-hole pairs and belongs to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universal class. The different underlying transport mechanisms for the two coupling schemes are reflected in the difference between the transition points.

Quantum Phase Transitions and Particle-Hole Pair Transport in Capacitively Coupled Josephson-Junction Chains

We consider two chains of ultrasmall Josephson junctions, coupled capacitively with each other, and investigate the transport of particle-hole pairs and the quantum phase transitions at zero temperature. For appropriate parameter ranges, the particle-hole pairs are found to play major roles in transport phenomena; condensation of such pairs leads to the superconducting state, displaying perfect drag of supercurrents along the two chains.

Quantum Phase Transitions in Josephson Junction Chains

We investigate the quantum phase transition in a one-dimensional chain of ultra-small superconducting grains, considering both the self- and junction capacitances. At zero temperature, the system is transformed into a two-dimensional system of classical vortices, where the junction capacitance introduces anisotropy in the interaction between vortices. This leads to the superconductor-insulator transition of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type, as the ratios of the Josephson coupling energy to the charging energies are varied. It is found that the junction capacitance plays a role similar to that of dissipation and tends to suppress quantum fluctuations; nevertheless the insulator region survives even for arbitrarily large values of the junction capacitance.

Dissipative Dynamics of Quantum Vortices in Superconducting Arrays

We consider a two-dimensional array of ultra-small superconducting grains, weakly coupled by Josephson junctions with large charging energy. We start from an effective action based on a microscopic tunneling Hamiltonian, which includes quasiparticle degrees of freedom, and study the resulting dissipative dynamics of quantum vortices. The equation of motion for a single vortex is deduced, and compared with a commonly adopted phenomenological model.

The Effects of d_{x^2-y^2}-d_{xy} Mixing on Vortex Structures and Magnetization

The structure of an isolated single vortex and the vortex lattice, and the magnetization in a $d$-wave superconductor are investigated within a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau (GL) model including the mixture of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave and $d_{xy}$-wave symmetry. The isolated single vortex structure in a week magnetic field is studied both numerically and asymptotically. Near the upper critical field $H_{c2}$, the vortex lattice structure and the magnetization are calculated analytically.

Exact Calculation of the Vortex-Antivortex Interaction Energy in the Anisotropic 3D XY-model

We have developed an exact method to calculate the vortex-antivortex interaction energy in the anisotropic 3D-XY model. For this calculation, dual transformation which is already known for the 2D XY-model was extended. We found an explicit form of this interaction energy as a function of the anisotropic ratio and the separation $r$ between the vortex and antivortex located on the same layer. The form of interaction energy is $\ln r$ at the small $r$ limi t but is proportional to $r$ at the opposite limit. This form of interaction energ y is consistent with the upper bound calculation using the variational method by Cataudella and Minnhagen.
