Nonlinear dynamics for vortex lattice formation in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the response of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate to a sudden turn-on of a rotating drive by solving the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A weakly anisotropic rotating potential excites a quadrupole shape oscillation and its time evolution is analyzed by the quasiparticle projection method. A simple recurrence oscillation of surface mode populations is broken in the quadrupole resonance region that depends on the trap anisotropy, causing stochastization of the dynamics. In the presence of the phenomenological dissipation, an initially irrotational condensate is found to undergo damped elliptic deformation followed by unstable surface ripple excitations, some of which develop into quantized vortices that eventually form a lattice. Recent experimental results on the vortex nucleation should be explained not only by the dynamical instability but also by the Landau instability; the latter is necessary for the vortices to penetrate into the condensate.

Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity of dilute Bose gas in a random potential

We develop the dilute Bose gas model with random potential in order to understand the Bose system in random media such as 4He in porous glass. Using the random potential taking account of the pore size dependence, we can compare quantitatively the calculated specific heat with the experimental results, without free parameters. The agreement is excellent at low temperatures, which justifies our model. The relation between Bose condensation and superfluidity is discussed. Our model can predict some unobserved phenomena in this system.

Energy Spectrum of Superfluid Turbulence without Normal Fluid

The energy spectrum of the superfluid turbulence without the normal fluid is studied numerically under the vortex filament model. Time evolution of the Taylor-Green vortex is calculated under the full nonlocal Biot-Savart law. It is shown that for k<2pi/l, the energy spectrum is very similar to the Kolmogorov's -5/3 law which is the most important statistical property of the conventional turbulence, where k is the wave number of the Fourier component of the velocity field and 1 the average intervortex spacing. The vortex length distribution becomes to obey a scaling property reflecting the self-similarity of the tangle.

Diffusion of an Inhomogeneous Vortex Tangle

The spatial diffusion of an inhomogeneous vortex tangle is studied numerically with the vortex filament model. A localized initial tangle is prepared by applying a counterflow, and the tangle is allowed to diffuse freely after the counterflow is turned off. Comparison with the solution of a generalization of the Vinen equation that takes diffusion into account leads to a very small diffusion constant, as expected from simple theoretical considerations. The relevance of this result to recent experiments on the generation and decay of superfluid turbulence at very low temperatures is discussed.

Competition between rotation and turbulence in superfluid He$^4$

Two types of vortex states have been much studied in superfluid $^4$He. The first is the vortex array in a rotating container. The second is the vortex tangle in turbulent flow. An experiment attempt to combine these two states by rotating a counterflow was attempted years ago. The data suggest the existence of different flow regimes separated by instabilities, but a theoretical interpretation is still missing. We present work in which we use the vortex filament model to numerically investigate rotating counterflow. We show evidence of a new state of polarized turbulence.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We show theoretically the existence of a metastable state and the possibility of decay to the ground state through macroscopic quantum tunneling in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interactions. Numerical analysis of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations clarifies the metastable states whose configuration preserves or breaks the symmetry of the trapping potential, depending on the interspecies interaction and the particle number. We calculate the tunneling decay rate of the metastable state by using the collective coordinate method under the WKB approximation. Then the height of the energy barrier is estimated by the saddle point solution. It is found that macroscopic quantum tunneling is observable in a wide range of particle numbers. Macroscopic quantum coherence between two distinct states is discussed; this might give an additional coherent property of two-component Bose condensed systems. Thermal effects on the decay rate are estimated.

Vortex lattice formation in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the dynamics of vortex lattice formation of a rotating trapped Bose-Einstein condensate by numerically solving the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and find that the condensate undergoes elliptic deformation, followed by unstable surface-mode excitations before forming a quantized vortex lattice. The origin of the peculiar surface-mode excitations is identified to be phase fluctuations at the low-density surface regime. The obtained dependence of a distortion parameter on time and that on the driving frequency agree with the recent experiments by Madison {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 4443 (2001)].

Energy Spectrum of the Random Velocity Field Induced by a Gaussian Vortex Tangle in HeII

Using the Gaussian model of the vortex tangle (VT) arising in the turbulent superfluid HeII, we calculate the energy spectrum $E(k)$ of the 3D random velocity field induced by that VT. If the VT is assumed to be a purely fractal object with Haussdorf dimension $H_D$, the $E(k)$ is a power-like function $E(k)\propto k^{-2+H_D}$. A more realistic VT in HeII is a semi-fractal object, behaving as smooth line for small separations $Δξ\ll R$ ($ξ$ is the label coordinate, $R$ is mean curvature)and having a random walk structure for large $Δξ$ with $H_D=2$. For that case calculations give a spectrum $E(k)$ that is $k$-independent for $k$ smaller than 1/R (but larger than the inverse size of the system) and that scales as $k^{-1}$ for larger $k$. The latter reflects the fact that for small scales a vortex filament behaves as a smooth line. Our results agree with recent numerical simulations. Vortex Nucleation and Array Formation in a Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate

The dependence of the number of vortices on the rotation frequency is obtained.

Energy Spectrum of Vortex Tangle

The energy spectrum of superfluid turbulence in the absence of the normal fluid is studied numerically. In order to discuss the statistical properties, we calculated the energy spectra of the 3D velocity field induced by dilute and dense vortex tangles respectively, whose dynamics is calculated by the Biot-Savart law. In the case of a dense tangle, the slope of the energy spectrum is changed at $k=2π/l$, where $l$ is the intervortex spacing. For $k>2π/l$, the energy spectrum has $k^{-1}$ behavior in the same manner as the dilute vortex tangle, while otherwise the slope of the energy spectrum deviates from $k^{-1}$ behavior. We compare the behavior for $k<2π/l$ with the Kolmogorov law.

Stochastic Dynamics of a Vortex Loop. Thermal Equilibrium

We study stochastic behavior of a single vortex loop appeared in imperfect Bose gas. Dynamics of Bose-condensate is supposed to obey Gross-Pitaevskii equation with additional noise satisfying fluctuation-dissipation relation. The corresponding Fokker-Planck equation for probability functional has a solution $\mathcal{P}(\{ψ(\mathbf{r})\})=\mathcal{N}\exp (-Hψ(\mathbf{r)} /T),$ where $Hψ(\mathbf{r})$ is a Ginzburg-Landau free energy. Considering a vortex filaments as a topological defects of the field $ψ(\mathbf{r})$ we derive a Langevin-type equation of motion of the line with correspondingly transformed stirring force. The respective Fokker-Planck equation for probability functional $\mathcal{P}(\{\mathbf{s}(ξ)\})$ in vortex loop configuration space is shown to have a solution of the form $\mathcal{P}(\{\mathbf{s}(ξ)\})=\mathcal{N}\exp (-H{\mathbf{s}} /T),$ where $\mathcal{N}$ is a normalizing factor and $H{\mathbf{s}}$ is energy of vortex line configurations. In other words a thermal equilibrium of Bose-condensate results in a thermal equilibrium of vortex loops appeared in Bose-condensate. Some consequences of that fact and possible violations are discussed.

Dynamics of vortex tangle without mutual friction in superfluid $^4$He

A recent experiment has shown that a tangle of quantized vortices in superfluid $^4$He decayed even at mK temperatures where the normal fluid was negligible and no mutual friction worked. Motivated by this experiment, this work studies numerically the dynamics of the vortex tangle without the mutual friction, thus showing that a self-similar cascade process, whereby large vortex loops break up to smaller ones, proceeds in the vortex tangle and is closely related with its free decay. This cascade process which may be covered with the mutual friction at higher temperatures is just the one at zero temperature Feynman proposed long ago. The full Biot-Savart calculation is made for dilute vortices, while the localized induction approximation is used for a dense tangle. The former finds the elementary scenario: the reconnection of the vortices excites vortex waves along them and makes them kinked, which could be suppressed if the mutual friction worked. The kinked parts reconnect with the vortex they belong to, dividing into small loops. The latter simulation under the localized induction approximation shows that such cascade process actually proceeds self-similarly in a dense tangle and continues to make small vortices. Considering that the vortices of the interatomic size no longer keep the picture of vortex, the cascade process leads to the decay of the vortex line density. The presence of the cascade process is supported also by investigating the classification of the reconnection type and the size distribution of vortices. The decay of the vortex line density is consistent with the solution of the Vinen's equation which was originally derived on the basis of the idea of homogeneous turbulence with the cascade process. The obtained result is compared with the recent Vinen's theory.

Cascade process of vortex tangle dynamics in superfluid $^4$He without mutual friction

Recently the Kelvin wave cascade process in superfluid $^4$He at very low temperatures was discussed. In this mechanism, the dynamics of the waves on the vortex lines plays an important role. In order to investigate this mechanism, we study numerically the dynamics of the waves on the reconnected vortex lines using the full Biot-Savart law. This work shows the reconnection of two vortices leads to the waves on the reconnected vortex lines. To discuss the energy of the waves on the vortex lines, the energy spectrum of the superflow before and after the reconnection is calculated.

Josephson Current Flowing in Cyclically Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

The Josephson effect in cyclically coupled Bose-Einstein condensates is studied theoretically. We analyze the simultaneous Gross-Pitaevskii equations with coupling terms between adjacent condensates. Depending on the initial relative phases between condensates, Josephson current flows cyclically to make a quantized vortex. Reducing the coupling between condensates changes the motion from periodic to chaotic, thus suppressing the cyclic current. The relation to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism is discussed.
