Multi-scale improved predictions for $\boldsymbol{pp \to t\bar{t}W^+ +X}$

We compare standard fixed-order NLO QCD predictions for the full off-shell $pp \to e^+ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, τ^+ν_τ\, b\bar{b} \, (j) + X$ processes in the multi-lepton decay channel with the results obtained using the MiNLO approach. The MiNLO method, now also implemented in the Helac-NLO framework, provides a dynamic determination of the renormalization and factorization scale settings by identifying the most likely branching histories of the additional jets through an inverse $k_T$-clustering algorithm. The inclusion of Sudakov form factors accounts for the large logarithms that arise in the presence of widely separated scales. We perform a dedicated comparison of the two approaches at both the integrated and differential (fiducial) cross-section levels for the LHC Run II energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Finally, we present the merging of the full off-shell predictions for $pp \to e^+ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, τ^+ν_τ\, b\bar{b} \, + X$, $pp \to e^+ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, τ^+ν_τ\, b\bar{b} \, j +X$ and $pp \to e^+ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, τ^+ν_τ\, b\bar{b} \, jj$, with the aim of improving the description of the underlying $pp \to e^+ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, τ^+ν_τ\, b\bar{b} + X$ process.

Complete NLO corrections to off-shell $\boldsymbol{t\bar{t}}$ production in the $\boldsymbol{\ell+j}$ decay channel

We present the calculation of the complete NLO corrections to the off-shell top-quark pair production in the $\ell+j$ decay channel, denoted as $pp \to \ell^- \barν_l\, j_b j_b \,jj + X$, where $\ell^- = e^-,\, μ^-$. The calculation consistently preserves the finite-width effects of the top quarks and massive gauge bosons, as well as takes into account all doubly-, singly-, and non-resonant contributions along with their interference effects. All Born-level contributions, at the perturbative orders from ${\cal O}(α_s^4α^2)$ to ${\cal O}(α_s^0α^6)$, are included and corrected by both NLO QCD and NLO EW effects. Furthermore, all possible partonic initial states are taken into account. Particular attention is paid to the infrared safety in the presence of photons and jets. This requires the use of the so-called parton-to-photon fragmentation function and the photon-to-jet conversion function, which makes the democratic photon-parton clustering and the $γ\to q\bar{q}$ splittings finite. We present our findings at the integrated and differential fiducial cross-section levels for the LHC Run III centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}= 13.6$ TeV. In addition, we quantify the impact of subleading NLO effects, in particular, electroweak Sudakov logarithms and non-resonant QCD backgrounds. Two analysis strategies are employed and compared, namely with and without the resonance-enhancing requirement on the invariant mass of the two light jets, $|M_{jj}-m_W|<{\cal Q}_{\text{cut}} = 20$ GeV, illustrating the relationship between QCD background suppression, off-shell effects, interferences, and complete NLO corrections.

SMEFT everywhere: a NLO study of $\boldsymbol{pp \to t\bar{t}H}$ with decaying tops

We present the computation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the $pp\to t\bar{t} H+X$ process in the di-lepton channel at the LHC, including relevant dimension-6 operators $({\cal O}_{tϕ}, \, {\cal O}_{ϕG},\, {\cal O}_{tG}, \, {\cal O}_{tW})$ from the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. In our studies, higher-order corrections and effective operators are consistently included in the production part of the process as well as in the top-quark decays. We perform a detailed study of linear, cross, and quadratic contributions and their uncertainties, including renormalisation group effects. Our findings are presented at the integrated and differential cross-section level for the LHC Run III center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV. Finally, we provide predictions for $pp\to t\bar{t} H+X$ with stable top quarks and compare them with the results in which top quarks are reconstructed from their decay products. We show that kinematic cuts, as well as higher-order effects and SMEFT operators in top-quark decays, are important and should be consistently considered together, because they have a significant impact on the shape of the standard observables measured for the $pp\to t\bar{t}H+X$ process at the LHC.

Modelling top-quark decays in $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ production at the LHC

We compare the fixed-order NLO QCD predictions for the $pp\to t\bar{t}t\bar{t}+X$ process in the $4\ell$ decay channel with the parton-shower based results obtained with the POWHEG and MC@NLO matching methods. In the first case, NLO QCD corrections are consistently included in both the $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ production step and the decays of the four top quarks, preserving all spin correlations. In the second approach, higher-order effects in top-quark decays with approximate spin correlations are simulated in the PYTHIA parton-shower framework. Additionally, we analyse the impact of including the so-called matrix element corrections in top-quark decays in both parton-shower matched predictions. The comparison is performed at the integrated and differential fiducial cross-section level for the LHC centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV.

State-of-the-art cross sections for ttH: NNLO predictions matched with NNLL resummation and EW corrections

We present new, state-of-the-art predictions for the associated production of the SM Higgs boson with top quarks, computed in accordance with the recommendations of the LHC Higgs Working Group. The NNLO QCD predictions, derived through suitable approximations of the two-loop virtual contribution, are supplemented with soft-gluon resummation up to NNLL accuracy. Two distinct resummation frameworks are employed - one based on direct QCD and the other on soft-collinear effective theory - and their features are compared in detail. These results are further combined with the complete-NLO corrections, yielding the most precise SM predictions for this process to date. The relevant sources of theoretical uncertainties are thoroughly estimated and discussed.

Four top final states with NLO accuracy in perturbative QCD: 3 lepton channel

We examine the effect of higher-order QCD corrections on the four top-quark production cross section in the $3$ lepton decay channel. Top-quark and $W$ gauge-boson decays are included at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The narrow-width approximation, that preserves spin correlations, is used to perform the calculation for this complex $2 \to 12 \,(13)$ process. We present differential cross-section distributions of top-quark decay products for the LHC Run III energy of $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV, using realistic selection cuts. Our results show that QCD corrections and jet radiation in top-quark and $W$ decays can lead to significant changes in shapes of basic kinematic distributions and, therefore, need to be included for the accurate description of $pp \to t\bar{t}t\bar{t}+X$ process in the $3\ell$ decay channel. The NLO QCD results obtained in this work are important in the context of the recent observation of the $pp\to t\bar{t}t\bar{t}+X$ process by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations and are of great significance for the High-Luminosity phase of the LHC.

NLO QCD predictions for $\boldsymbol{t\bar{t}γ}$ with realistic photon isolation

We present a complete description of top quark pair production in association with a hard photon in the di-lepton decay channel. The calculation is performed at NLO QCD and includes all resonant and non-resonant Feynman diagrams, interferences, and finite-width effects of the top quarks and $W^\pm/Z$ gauge bosons. We provide the results for the $pp\to e^+ν_e \,μ^- \barν\, b\bar{b}\,γ+X$ process using the fixed-cone, smooth-cone and hybrid-photon isolation criteria. The fixed-cone isolation criterion allows contributions from collinear photon radiation off QCD partons, which requires the inclusion of parton-to-photon fragmention processes. To this end, we include the latter contributions into our computational framework. We quantify the impact of different photon-isolation prescriptions on the integrated and differential cross-section predictions for the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV. Our state-of-the-art NLO QCD results with the fixed-cone criterion allow us to reproduce the photon-isolation prescription employed in ATLAS and CMS. This will help to improve future comparisons with the LHC data.

Complete NLO corrections to top-quark pair production with isolated photons

We compute for the first time the so-called complete NLO corrections to top-quark pair production with one and two isolated photons in the di-lepton top-quark decay channel. The Narrow Width Approximation is used for the modeling of unstable top quarks and $W$ bosons. Higher-order QCD and EW effects as well as photon bremsstrahlung are consistently included at all stages: in production and top-quark decays. We present results at the integrated and differential fiducial cross-section level for both processes for the LHC Run II center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. In addition, we investigate the scale choice in photonic observables. Finally, the individual size of each subleading contribution is discussed in detail and the origin of the main subleading corrections is scrutinised. For the latter case, alternative calculations are performed in which the subleading NLO corrections are included only in the production of $t\bar{t}γ$ and $t\bar{t}γγ$.

Four top final states with NLO accuracy in perturbative QCD: 4 lepton channel

Triggered by the observation of four top-quark production at the LHC by the ATLAS and CMS collaboration we report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the Standard Model process $pp \to t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ in the $4\ell$ top-quark decay channel. We take into account higher-order QCD effects in both the production and decays of the four top quarks. The latter effects are treated in the narrow width approximation, which preserves top-quark spin correlations throughout the calculation. We present results for two selected renormalisation and factorisation scale settings and three different PDF sets. Furthermore, we study the main theoretical uncertainties that are associated with the neglected higher-order terms in the perturbative expansion and with the parameterisation of the PDF sets. The results at the integrated and differential fiducial cross-section level are shown for the LHC Run III center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV. Our findings are particularly relevant for precise measurements of the four top-quark fiducial cross sections and for the modelling of top-quark decays at the LHC.

Ad interim recommendations for the Higgs boson production cross sections at $\sqrt{s} = 13.6$ TeV

This note documents predictions for the inclusive production cross sections of the Standard Model Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre of mass energy of 13.6 TeV. The predictions here are based on simple extrapolations of previously documented predictions published in the CERN Yellow Report "Deciphering the Nature of the Higgs Sector". The predictions documented in this note should serve as a reference while a more complete and update-to-date derivation of cross section predictions is in progress.

NLO QCD predictions for off-shell $t\bar{t}W$ production in association with a light jet at the LHC

In view of the persisting tension between theoretical predictions and the LHC data for the $pp \to t\bar{t}W^\pm$ production process, we present the state-of-the-art full off-shell NLO QCD result for $pp \to t\bar{t}W^+\, j+X$. We concentrate on the multi-lepton decay channel at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}= 13$ TeV. In our calculation off-shell top quarks and gauge bosons are described by Breit-Wigner propagators, furthermore, double-, single- as well as non-resonant top-quark contributions along with all interference effects are consistently incorporated at the matrix element level. We present results for both integrated and differential fiducial cross sections for various renormalisation and factorisation scale settings and different PDF sets. With a fairly inclusive choice of cuts and regardless of the scale and PDF choice, non-flat differential ${\cal K}$-factors are obtained for many observables that we have examined. Since from an experimental point of view, both processes $pp \to t\bar{t}W^\pm j+X$ and $pp\to t\bar{t}W^\pm +X$ consist of similar final states we investigate the effect of additional jet activity on the integrated and differential fiducial cross sections. For this purpose, the normalised differential distributions for $pp \to e^+ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, τ^+ν_τ\, b\bar{b} \,j+X$ and $pp \to e^+ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, τ^+ν_τ\, b\bar{b} +X$ are compared. The theoretical results for the latter process are also recalculated.

Associated production of a top-quark pair with two isolated photons at the LHC through NLO in QCD

We report on the computation of NLO QCD corrections to top-quark pair production in association with two photons at the LHC. Higher-order effects and photon bremsstrahlung are taken into account in the production and decays of the top-quark pair. Top-quark and $W$-boson decays are treated in the Narrow Width Approximation conserving spin correlations up to NLO in QCD. This is the first time that the complete set of NLO QCD corrections to the $pp \to t\bar{t}γγ$ process including top-quark decays is calculated. We present results at the integrated and differential cross-section level in the di-lepton and lepton $+$ jet channel. In addition, we investigate the effect of photon bremsstrahlung in $t\bar{t}$ production and top-quark decays, as well as the mixed contribution. The latter contribution, in which two photons occur simultaneously in the production and decay of the $t\bar{t}$ pair, proved to be significant at both the integrated and differential cross-section level.

A study of additional jet activity in top quark pair production and decay at the LHC

We report on the calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to top quark pair production in association with two hard jets at the LHC. We take into account higher-order effects in both the production and decays of the top-quark pair. The latter are treated in the narrow width approximation and $t\bar{t}$ spin correlations are preserved throughout the calculation. This is the first time that such a complete study for this process is conducted at NLO in QCD. We present results for fiducial cross sections at the integrated and differential level. Furthermore, we investigate kinematic properties of the additional light jets and their distribution in the $pp\to t\bar{t}jj$ process. We examine jets in production and top-quark decays as well as the mixed contribution, where the two hardest non-$b$ jets are present simultaneously in the production and decay processes.

$t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ at the LHC: On the size of off-shell effects and prompt $b$-jet identification

We investigate full off-shell effects in $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ production in the dilepton channel at the LHC with the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. Specifically, we compute NLO QCD corrections to the $pp \to e^+ ν_e μ^- \barν_μb \bar{b} b \bar{b} + X$ process and provide a prescription for $b$-jet identification to distinguish prompt $b$ jets from $b$ jets originating from the decay of the top quarks. As an important irreducible background to $pp \to t\bar{t}H (H\to b\bar{b})$, $t\bar{t}$ production in association with two prompt $b$ jets is a primary source of uncertainty in the measurement of $t\bar{t}H (H\to b\bar{b})$. In quantifying full off-shell effects, we perform comparisons between the state-of-the-art full off-shell computation and the calculation in the narrow width approximation. The former includes all double-, single- and non-resonant Feynman diagrams, interferences as well as finite-width effects of the top quarks and $W$ gauge bosons. The latter restricts the unstable top quarks and $W$ gauge bosons to on-shell states and includes for the first time NLO QCD corrections to both production and decays. We observe that full off-shell effects are subdominant compared to the scale uncertainties for the integrated fiducial cross section and for the majority of differential observables in the phase-space regions that we investigated. However, for a number of observables related to beyond the Standard Model searches, full off-shell effects are significant. Furthermore, with our $b$-jet labelling prescription, the prompt $b$ jets and the $b$ jets from top-quark decays can be successfully disentangled.

${\cal CP}$ structure of the top-quark Yukawa interaction: NLO QCD corrections and off-shell effects

Since its discovery at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012 the Higgs boson has arguably become the most famous of the Standard Model particles and many measurements have been performed in order to assess its properties. Among others, these include measurements of the Higgs boson's ${\cal CP}$ state which is predicted to be ${\cal CP}$-even. Even though a pure ${\cal CP}$-odd state has been ruled out, a possible admixture of a ${\cal CP}$-odd Higgs state has yet to be excluded. In this work we present predictions for the associated production of a leptonically decaying top quark pair and a stable Higgs boson $p p \to e^+ ν_e\, μ^- \barν_μ\,b\bar{b}\,H$ with possible mixing between ${\cal CP}$-even and ${\cal CP}$-odd states at NLO in QCD for the LHC with $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. Finite top-quark and gauge boson width effects as well as all double-, single- and non-resonant Feynman diagrams including their interference effects are taken into account. We compare the behaviour of the ${\cal CP}$-even, -odd and -mixed scenarios for the integrated fiducial cross-sections as well as several key differential distributions. In addition, we show that both NLO corrections and off-shell effects play an important role even at the level of integrated fiducial cross-sections and that these are further enhanced in differential distributions. Even though we focus here on the Standard Model Higgs boson, the calculations could be straightforwardly applied to models that have an extended Higgs-boson sector and predict the existence of ${\cal CP}$-odd Higgs-like particles, such as the two-Higgs-doublet model.

NLO QCD corrections to full off-shell production of $t\bar{t}Z$ including leptonic decays

Motivated by ongoing new physics searches in the top-quark sector at the Large Hadron Collider we report on the calculation of NLO QCD corrections to the Standard Model $pp\to t\bar{t}Z+X$ process in the tetra-lepton decay channel. This calculation is based on the matrix elements for the $e^+ ν_e\, μ^-\barν_μ\, b\bar{b} \,τ^+τ^-$ final state and includes all resonant and non-resonant Feynman diagrams, interferences and off-shell effects of the top quark as well as the $W$ and $Z$ gauge bosons. Also incorporated are photon-induced contributions. As it is customary for such studies, we show theoretical predictions for both fixed and dynamical factorisation and renormalisation scale choices and different PDF sets. Furthermore, we study the main theoretical uncertainties that are associated with neglected higher-order terms in the perturbative expansion and with the parameterisation of the PDF sets. In order to investigate the size of off-shell effects and higher-order corrections in top-quark decays, we perform a second computation for this process, which is based on the narrow-width-approximation where the top quarks, $W$ and $Z$ gauge bosons are kept on-shell. Results are given for the integrated and differential fiducial cross sections for the LHC Run II center-of-mass energy of $13$ TeV.

Production and decay of a heavy boson in association with top quarks

We briefly report on NLO QCD corrections to the $pp \to t\bar{t} B +X$ process, where $B$ stands for $H,\,W^\pm$ or $Z$. In the calculation all double-, single and non-resonant Feynman diagrams, interferences and finite-width effects are included for the top quark and $W^\pm/Z$ gauge bosons. Numerical results are shown at the differential cross section level for various factorisation and renormalisation scale settings and a few PDF sets. The main theoretical uncertainties associated with neglected higher-order terms in the perturbative expansion and with different parametrisations of the PDFs are also discussed. Furthermore, we compare our complete predictions for $pp\to t\bar{t} B+X$ in multi-lepton final states to the calculation in the narrow-width approximation.
