Einstein--de Haas fluctuation of a nanoparticle in spin polarized gases

We theoretically study angular momentum (AM) transfer from a spin-polarized dilute gas into an nanoparitcle (NP) tightly trapped in optical tweezers. We formulate a microscopic model based on the spin tunneling Hamiltonian method and derive a macroscopic stochastic differential equation (SDE) which governs the AM-transfer-induced rotational motion of the NP. It is shown that the AM transfer rate at the NP surface can be extracted via the inference of the SDE. This work will open the door to the manipulation of nano-spintronic systems in gaseous environments.

Helicity current generation by distorted Rashba coupling

We theoretically study spin transport in two-or three-dimensional Rashba systems dynamically distorted by surface acoustic waves. The spin currents in the linear response to lattice distortion dynamics are calculated on the basis of a microscopic theory combined with local coordinate transformations. As a result, we find a mechanism of direct spin-current generation from lattice distortion not associated with a charge current or spin accumulation. Moreover, the in-plane helicity currents are generated by shear surface acoustic waves via the present mechanism. The generated helicity currents are not parallel to the vorticity of the lattice, and cannot be created with the conventional methods. Thus, our findings offer an alternative functionality of the conventional Rashba systems in the field of spintronics.

Microscopic Theory of the Spin Hall Magnetoresistance

We consider a microscopic theory for the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). We generally formulate a spin conductance at an interface between a normal metal and a magnetic insulator in terms of spin susceptibilities. We reveal that SMR is composed of static and dynamic parts. The static part, which is almost independent of the temperature, originates from spin flip caused by an interfacial exchange coupling. However, the dynamic part, which is induced by the creation or annihilation of magnons, has an opposite sign from the static part. By the spin-wave approximation, we predict that the latter results in a nontrivial sign change of the SMR signal at a finite temperature. In addition, we derive the Onsager relation between spin conductance and thermal spin-current noise.

Optically induced electron spin currents in the Kretschmann configuration

We investigate electron spin currents induced optically via plasmonic modes in the Kretschmann configuration. By utilising the scattering matrix formalism, we take the plasmonic mode coupled to external laser drive into consideration and calculate induced magnetisation in the metal. The spatial distribution of the plasmonic mode is inherited by the induced magnetisation, which acts as inhomogeneous effective magnetic field and causes the Stern-Gerlach effect to drive electron spin currents in the metal. We solve spin diffusion equation with a source term to analyse the spin current as a function of the spin diffusion length of the metal, the frequency and the incident angle of the external drive.

Enhancement of domain-wall mobility detected by NMR at the angular momentum compensation temperature

The angular momentum compensation temperature $T_{\rm A}$ of ferrimagnets has attracted much attention because of high-speed magnetic dynamics near $T_{\rm A}$. We show that NMR can be used to investigate domain wall dynamics near $T_{\rm A}$ in ferrimagnets. We performed $^{57}$Fe-NMR measurements on the ferrimagnet Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ with $T_{\rm A} = 245$ K. In a multi-domain state, the NMR signal is enhanced by domain wall motion. We found that the NMR signal enhancement shows a maximum at $T_{\rm A}$ in the multi-domain state. The NMR signal enhancement occurs due to increasing domain-wall mobility toward $T_{\rm A}$. We develop the NMR signal enhancement model involves domain-wall mobility. Our study shows that NMR in multi-domain state is a powerful tool to determine $T_{\rm A}$, even from a powder sample and it expands the possibility of searching for angular momentum-compensated materials.

Spin hydrodynamic generation in graphene

Graphene hosts an ultra-clean electronic system with electron-electron collisions being the dominant source of scattering above liquid nitrogen temperatures. In this regime, the motion of the electron fluid resembles the flow of classical liquids and gases with high viscosity. Here we show that such a viscous electron flow can cause the generation of a spin current perpendicular to the direction of flow. Combining the Navier-Stokes equations and the spin diffusion equation in the presence of the spin-vorticity coupling, we derive an expression for the spin accumulation emerging purely as a result of the viscous electron flow. We explore Poiseuille flow and Jeffery-Hamel flow and show that the spin Hall angle may exceed 0.1 over a wide range of temperatures and can be controlled by carrier density, temperature, and the geometry of sample boundaries. Our theory points to new functionality of graphene as a spin current source.

Magnon Current Generation by Dynamical Distortion

The interaction between spin and nanomechanical degrees of freedom attracts interest from the viewpoint of basic science and device applications. We study the magnon current induced by the torsional oscillation of ferromagnetic nanomechanical cantilever. We find that a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction emerges by the torsional oscillation, which is described by the spin gauge field, and the DM interaction leads to the detectably-large magnon current with frequency same as that of the torsional oscillation. Our theory paves the way for studying torsional spin-nanomechanical phenomena by using the spin gauge field.

Spin Current Generation by a Surface Plasmon Polariton

Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is an electromagnetic wave which is tightly localised beyond the diffraction limit at metallic surfaces. Recently, it is theoretically proposed that the angular momentum conversion between the SPP and electrons. In this work, we have successfully measured SPP induced spin currents, which proves the fact that the angular momenta are interconverted. Such conversion from light to a spin current can be used as a coupler in a next generation spintronic computing with optical data transfer or storage.

Valley-dependent spin transport in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides

We study valley-dependent spin transport theoretically in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides in which a variety of spin and valley physics are expected because of spin-valley coupling. The results show that the spins are valley-selectively excited with appropriate carrier doping and valley polarized spin current (VPSC) is generated. The VPSC leads to the spin-current Hall effect, transverse spin accumulation originating from the Berry curvature in momentum space. The results indicate that spin excitations with spin-valley coupling lead to both valley and spin transport, which is promising for future low-consumption nanodevice applications.

Quantum Oscillations of Gilbert Damping in Ferromagnetic/Graphene Bilayer Systems

We study the spin dynamics of a ferromagnetic insulator on which graphene is placed. We show that the Gilbert damping is enhanced by the proximity exchange coupling at the interface. The modulation of the Gilbert damping constant is proportional to the product of the spin-up and spin-down densities of states of graphene. Consequently, the Gilbert damping constant in a strong magnetic field oscillates as a function of the external magnetic field that originates from the Landau level structure of graphene. We find that a measurement of the oscillation period enables the strength of the exchange coupling constant to be determined. The results demonstrate in theory that the ferromagnetic resonance measurements may be used to detect the spin resolved electronic structure of the adjacent materials, which is critically important for future spin device evaluations.

Effects of surface plasmons on spin currents in a thin film system

We propose and analyze surface-plasmon-driven electron spin currents in a thin metallic film. The electron gas in the metal follows the transversally rotating electric fields of the surface plasmons (SPs), which leads to a static magnetization gradient. We consider herein SPs in a thin-film insulator-metal-insulator structure and solve the spin diffusion equation in the presence of a magnetization gradient. The results reveal that the SPs at the metal interfaces generate spin currents in the metallic film. For thinner film, the SPs become strongly hybridized, which increases the magnetization gradient and enhances the spin current. We also discuss how the spin current depends on SP wavelength and the spin-diffusion length of the metal. The polarization of the spin current can be controlled by tuning the wavelength of the SPs and/or the spin diffusion length.

Electron spin transport driven by surface plasmon polariton

We propose a mechanism of angular momentum conversion from optical transverse spin in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) to conduction electron spin. Free electrons in the metal follow the transversally spinning electric field of SPP, and the resulting orbital motions create inhomogeneous static magnetisation in the metal. By solving the spin diffusion equation in the SPP, we find that the magnetisation field generates an electron spin current. We show that there exists a resonant condition where the spin current is resonantly enhanced, and the polarisation of the spin current is flipped. Our theory reveals a novel functionality of SPP as a spin current source.

Alternating Current-induced Interfacial Spin-transfer Torque

We investigate an interfacial spin-transfer torque and $β$-term torque with alternating current (AC) parallel to a magnetic interface. We find that both torques are resonantly enhanced as the AC frequency approaches to the exchange splitting energy. We show that this resonance allows us to estimate directly the interfacial exchange interaction strength from the domain wall motion. We also find that the $β$-term includes an unconventional contribution which is proportional to the time derivative of the current and exists even in absence of any spin relaxation processes.

Spontaneous generation of spin current from the vacuum by strong electric fields

We discuss spontaneous spin current generation from the vacuum by strong electric fields as a result of interplay between the Schwinger mechanism and a spin-orbit coupling. By considering a homogeneous slow strong electric field superimposed by a fast weak transverse electric field, we explicitly evaluate the vacuum expectation value of a spin current (the Bargmann-Wigner spin current) by numerically solving the Dirac equation. We show that a non-vanishing spin current polarized in the direction perpendicular to the electric fields flows mostly in the longitudinal direction. We also find that a relativistic effect due to the helicity conservation affects direction/polarization of spin current.

Determination of spin relaxation time and spin diffusion length by oscillation of spin pumping signal

We theoretically investigate a manipulation method of nonequilibrium spin accumulation in the paramagnetic normal metal of a spin pumping system, by using the spin precession motion combined with the spin diffusion transport. We demonstrate based on the Bloch-Torrey equation that the direction of the nonequilibrium spin accumulation is changed by applying an additional external magnetic field, and consequently, the inverse spin Hall voltage in an adjacent paramagnetic heavy metal changes its sign. We find that the spin relaxation time and the spin diffusion length are simultaneously determined by changing the magnitude of the external magnetic field and the thickness of the normal metal in a commonly-used spin pumping system.

Fate of spin polarization in a relativistic fluid: An entropy-current analysis

We derive relativistic hydrodynamic equations with a dynamical spin degree of freedom on the basis of an entropy-current analysis. The first and second laws of local thermodynamics constrain possible structures of the constitutive relations including a spin current and the antisymmetric part of the (canonical) energy-momentum tensor. Solving the obtained hydrodynamic equations within the linear-mode analysis, we find spin-diffusion modes, indicating that spin density is damped out after a characteristic time scale controlled by transport coefficients introduced in the antisymmetric part of the energy-momentum tensor in the entropy-current analysis. This is a consequence of mutual convertibility between spin and orbital angular momentum.

Universal $1/3$-suppression of magnonic shot noise in diffusive insulating magnets

Extending a Boltzmann-Langevin theory to magnons, we show a universality of current-noise suppression in diffusive systems against the difference of quantum-statistical properties of bosons and fermions. To this end, starting from a quantum kinetic equation for magnons subjected to thermal gradient in dilute impurities, we derive a bosonic counterpart of the semiclassical Boltzmann-Langevin equation for electrons and evaluate a magnonic current-noise in the diffusive insulating magnet. We theoretically discover that compared with a Poissonian shot noise of magnons in an insulating ferromagnetic junction, the magnonic shot noise is suppressed in the diffusive insulating bulk magnet and noise-to-current ratio (Fano factor) at low temperatures exhibits a universal behavior, i.e., the same suppression $1/3$ as the one for electron transport in diffusive conductors, despite the difference of quantum-statistical properties. Finally, we show that our predictions are within experimental reach with current device and measurement technologies.

Angular momentum compensation manipulation to room temperature of the ferrimagnet Ho$_{3-x}$Dy$_x$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ detected by the Barnett effect

We demonstrate that the angular momentum compensation temperature $T_A$, at which the net angular momentum in the sample disappears, can be controlled in Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ by partially substituting Dy for Ho. The $T_A$ can be detected using the Barnett effect, by which mechanical rotation magnetizes an object due to spin-rotation coupling. We found that $T_A$ increases with the Dy content and clarified that the $T_A$ of Ho$_{1.5}$Dy$_{1.5}$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ coincides with room temperature. The Barnett effect enables us to explore materials applicable to magnetic devices utilizing the angular momentum compensation only by rotating the powder sample at room temperature.
