Asymmetric quantum shot noise in magnon transport

We study a frequency-dependent noise-to-current ratio for asymmetric, symmetric, and noncommutative current-noise in a ferromagnetic insulating junction, and extract quantum-mechanical properties of magnon transport at low temperatures. We demonstrate that the noncommutative noise, vanished in the dc-limit (i.e., a classical regime), increases monotonically as a function of frequency, and show that the noncommutative noise associated directly with quantum fluctuations of magnon currents breaks through the classical upper limit determined by the symmetric noise and realizes asymmetric quantum shot noise. Finally, we show that our theoretical predictions are within experimental reach with current device and measurement scheme while exploiting low temperatures. Our work provides a platform toward experimental access to quantum fluctuations of magnon currents.

Observation of gyromagnetic reversal

We report direct observation of gyromagnetic reversal, which is the sign change of gyromagnetic ratio in a ferrimagnet Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, by using the Barnett effect measurement technique at low temperatures. The Barnett effect is a phenomenon in which magnetization is induced by mechanical rotation through the coupling between rotation and total angular momentum $J$ of electrons. The magnetization of Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ induced by mechanical rotation disappears at 135~K and 240~K. The temperatures correspond to the magnetization compensation temperature $T_{\rm M}$ and the angular momentum compensation temperature $T_{\rm A}$, respectively. Between $T_{\rm M}$ and $T_{\rm A}$, the magnetization flips over to be parallel against the angular momentum due to the sign change of gyromagnetic ratio. This study provides an unprecedented technique to explore the gyromagnetic properties.

Magnonic Noise and Wiedemann-Franz Law

We theoretically establish mutual relations among magnetic momentum, heat, and fluctuations of propagating magnons in a ferromagnetic insulating junction in terms of noise and the bosonic Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law. Using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, we calculate all transport coefficients of a noise spectrum for both magnonic spin and heat currents, and establish Onsager relations between the thermomagnetic currents and the zero-frequency noise. Making use of the magnonic WF law and the Seebeck coefficient in the low-temperature limit, we theoretically discover universal relations, i.e. being independent of material parameters, for both the nonequilibrium and equilibrium noise, and show that each noise is described solely in terms of thermal conductance. Finally, we introduce a magnonic spin-analog of the Fano factor, noise-to-current ratio, and demonstrate that the magnonic spin-Fano factor reduces to a universal value in the low-temperature limit and it remains valid even beyond a linear response regime.

Dirac-Surface-State Modulated Spin Dynamics in a Ferrimagnetic Insulator at Room Temperature

This work demonstrates dramatically modified spin dynamics of magnetic insulator (MI) by the spin-momentum locked Dirac surface states of the adjacent topological insulator (TI) which can be harnessed for spintronic applications. As the Bi-concentration x is systematically tuned in 5 nm thick (BixSb1-x)2Te3 TI film, the weight of the surface relative to bulk states peaks at x = 0.32 when the chemical potential approaches the Dirac point. At this concentration, the Gilbert damping constant of the precessing magnetization in 10 nm thick Y3Fe5O12 MI film in the MI/TI heterostructures is enhanced by an order of magnitude, the largest among all concentrations. In addition, the MI acquires additional strong magnetic anisotropy that favors the in-plane orientation with similar Bi-concentration dependence. These extraordinary effects of the Dirac surface states distinguish TI from other materials such as heavy metals in modulating spin dynamics of the neighboring magnetic layer.

Theory of spin hydrodynamic generation

Spin-current generation by fluid motion is theoretically investigated. Based on quantum kinetic theory, the spin-diffusion equation coupled with fluid vorticity is derived. We show that spin currents are generated by the vorticity gradient in both laminar and turbulent flows and that the generated spin currents can be detected by the inverse spin Hall voltage measurements, which are predicted to be proportional to the flow velocity in a laminar flow. In contrast, the voltage in a turbulent flow is proportional to the square of the flow velocity. This study will pave the way to fluid spintronics.

Renormalization of spin-rotation coupling

We predict the enhancement of the spin-rotation coupling due to the interband mixing. The Bloch wavefunctions in the presence of mechanical rotation are constructed with the generalized crystal momentum which includes a gauge potential arising from the rotation. Using the eight- band Kane model, the renormalized spin-rotation coupling is explicitly obtained. As a result of the renormalization, the rotational Doppler shift in electron spin resonance and the mechanical torque on an electron spin will be strongly modulated.

Mechanical generation of spin current by spin-rotation coupling

Spin-rotation coupling, which is responsible for angular momentum conversion between the electron spin and rotational deformations of elastic media, is exploited for generating spin current. This method requires neither magnetic moments nor spin-orbit interaction. The spin current generated in nonmagnets is calculated in presence of surface acoustic waves. We solve the spin diffusion equation, extended to include spin-rotation coupling, and find that larger spin currents can be obtained in materials with longer spin lifetimes. Spin accumulation induced on the surface is predicted to be detectable by time-resolved Kerr spectroscopy.

Spin-dependent inertial force and spin current in accelerating systems

The spin-dependent inertial force in an accelerating system under the presence of electromagnetic fields is derived from the generally covariant Dirac equation. Spin currents are evaluated by the force up to the lowest order of the spin-orbit coupling in both ballistic and diffusive regimes. We give an interpretation of the inertial effect of linear acceleration on an electron as an effective electric field and show that mechanical vibration in a high frequency resonator can create a spin current via the spin-orbit interaction augmented by the linear acceleration.

Spin current generation due to mechanical rotation in the presence of impurity scattering

We theoretically investigate the generation of spin current from a uniformly rotating body with impurity scattering on the basis of the spin dependent transport equation. The spin current is created mainly in the radial direction when a weak magnetic field, where the cyclotron frequency is smaller than the inverse of the relaxation time due to the impurity scattering, is applied parallel to the rotation axis. Spin accumulation is estimated by solving the spin diffusion equation. We show that the inverse spin Hall effect can be used to detect the spin current induced by rotation.

Effects of mechanical rotation on spin currents

We study the Pauli--Schrödinger equation in a uniformly rotating frame of reference to describe a coupling of spins and mechanical rotations. The explicit form of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) with the inertial effects due to the mechanical rotation is presented. We derive equations of motion for a wavepacket of electrons in two-dimensional planes subject to the SOI. The solution is a superposition of two cyclotron motions with different frequencies and a circular spin current is created by the mechanical rotation.
