Dirac monopoles and the importance of the usage of appropriate degrees of freedom

We discuss that the singularities appearing in Dirac's formulation of magnetic monopoles are due to the set of fields which he used and not due to the physical properties of magnetic monopoles. We explain in detail that we can find the same algebraic expressions and singularities for the affine connections on the sphere $S^2$, which Dirac found for the U(1) gauge field of magnetic monopoles. Since spheres have no singularities, it is obvious, that these singularities are due to the set of fields which are used to describe the geometry of $S^2$. As there are descriptions of the geometry of spheres without any singularities, we indicate that it would be preferable to use singularity free descriptions of magnetic and also electric monopoles.

Energy as a measure for the elapse of time

Clocks in different heights or with different velocities run with different speeds. For global positioning systems these effects are much too large to be ignored. Nevertheless, in classical and quantum mechanics we get high accuracy using a "universal" time scale, not depending on altitudes and velocities. One may ask how this is possible. The answer to this question we may get from the observation that in classical and quantum mechanics time and energy are canonically conjugate variables. We argue that the mentioned modifications of the time scale by relativistic effects are taken into account in the notion of energy. On the basis of the experimental results and the laws of special relativity we argue that we should consider energy as measure for the elapse of time.

Influence of gravitational waves on circular moving particles

We investigate the influence of a gravitational wave background on particles in circular motion. We are especially interested in waves leading to stationary orbits. This consideration is limited to circular orbits perpendicular to the incidence direction. As a main result of our calculation we obtain in addition to the well-known alteration of the radial distance a time dependent correction term for the phase modifying the circular motion of the particle. A background of gravitational waves creates some kind of uncertainty.

Colorful vortex intersections in SU(2) lattice gauge theory and their influencs on chiral properties

We introduce topological non-trivial colorful regions around intersection points of two perpendicular vortex pairs and investigate their influence on topological charge density and eigenmodes of the Dirac operator. With increasing distance between the vortices the eigenvalues of the lowest modes decrease. We show that the maxima and minima of the chiral densities of the low modes follow mainly the distributions of the topological charge densities. The topological non-trivial color structures lead in some low modes to distinct peaks in the chiral densities. The other low modes reflect the topological charge densities of the intersection points.

Charges and Electromagnetic radiation as topological excitations

We discuss a model with stable topological solitons in Minkowski space with only three degrees of freedom, the rotational angles of a spatial Dreibein. This model has four types of solitons differing in two topological quantum numbers which we identify with electric charge and spin. The vacuum has a two-dimensional degeneracy leading to two types of massless excitations, characterised by a topological quantum number which could have a physical equivalent in the photon number.

Colorful plane vortices and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in $SU(2)$ Lattice Gauge Theory

We investigate plane vortices with color structure. The topological charge and gauge action of such colorful plane vortices are studied in the continuum and on the lattice. These configurations are vacuum to vacuum transitions changing the winding number between the two vacua, leading to a topological charge $Q=-1$ in the continuum. After growing temporal extent of these vortices, the lattice topological charge approaches $-1$ and the index theorem is fulfilled. We analyze the low lying modes of the overlap Dirac operator in the background of these colorful plane vortices and compare them with those of spherical vortices. They show characteristic properties for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking from Center Vortices

We analyze the creation of near-zero modes from would-be zero modes of various topological charge contributions from classical center vortices in SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We show that colorful spherical vortex and instanton configurations have very similar Dirac eigenmodes and also vortex intersections are able to give rise to a finite density of near-zero modes, leading to chiral symmetry breaking via the Banks-Casher formula. We discuss the influence of the magnetic vortex fluxes on quarks and how center vortices may break chiral symmetry.

Center Vortices and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

We investigate the chiral properties of near-zero modes for thick classical center vortices in SU (2) lattice gauge theory as examples of the phenomena which may arise in a vortex vacuum. In particular we analyze the creation of near-zero modes from would-be zero modes of various topological charge contributions from center vortices. We show that classical colorful spherical vortex and instanton ensembles have almost identical Dirac spectra and the low-lying eigenmodes from spherical vortices show all characteristic properties for chiral symmetry breaking. We further show that also vortex intersections are able to give rise to a finite density of near-zero modes, leading to chiral symmetry breaking via the Banks-Casher formula. We discuss the mechanism by which center vortex fluxes contribute to chiral symmetry breaking.

Colorful SU(2) center vortices in the continuum and on the lattice

The spherical vortex as introduced in [Phys. Rev. D77, 014515 (2008)] is generalized. A continuum form of the spherical vortex is derived and investigated in detail. The discrepancy between the gluonic lattice topological charge and the index of the lattice Dirac operator described in previous papers is identified as a discretization effect. The importance of the investigations for Monte Carlo configurations is discussed.

Intersections of thick Center Vortices, Dirac Eigenmodes and Fractional Topological Charge in SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

Intersections of thick, plane SU(2) center vortices are characterized by the topological charge |Q|=1/2. We compare such intersections with the distribution of zeromodes of the Dirac operator in the fundamental and adjoint representation using both the overlap and asqtad staggered fermion formulations in SU(2) lattice gauge theory. We analyze configurations with four intersections and find that the probability density distribution of fundamental zeromodes in the intersection plane differs significantly from the one obtained analytically in [Phys.\ Rev.\ D 66, 85004 (2002)]. The Dirac eigenmodes are clearly sensitive to the traces of the Polyakov (Wilson) lines and do not exactly locate topological charge contributions. Although, the adjoint Dirac operator is able to produce zeromodes for configurations with topological charge |Q|=1/2, they do not locate single vortex intersections, as we prove by forming arbitrary linear combinations of these zeromodes - their scalar density peaks at least at two intersection points. With pairs of thin and thick vortices we realize a situation similar to configurations with topological charge |Q|=1/2. For such configurations the zeromodes do not localize in the regions of fractional topological charge contribution but spread over the whole lattice, avoiding regions of negative traces of Polyakov lines.

Lattice Index Theorem and Fractional Topological Charge

We study topological properties of classical spherical center vortices with the low-lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator in the fundamental and adjoint representations using both the overlap and asqtad staggered fermion formulations. In particular we address the puzzle raised in a previous work of our group [Phys.\ Rev.\ D 77, 14515 (2008)], where we found a violation of the lattice index theorem with the overlap Dirac operator in the fundamental representation even for "admissible" gauge fields. Here we confirm the discrepancy between the topological charge and the index of the Dirac operator also for asqtad staggered fermions and the adjoint representation. Numerically, the discrepancy equals the sum of the winding numbers of the spheres when they are regarded as maps $\mathbbm R^3 \cup \{\infty\} \to SU(2)$. Furthermore we find some evidence for fractional topological charge during cooling the spherical center vortex on a $40^3 \times 2$ lattice. The object with topological charge $Q=1/2$ we identify as a Dirac monopole with a gauge field fading away at large distances. Therefore even for periodic boundary conditions it does not need an antimonopole.

Distribution of Magnetic Monopoles within cubes in Compact QED

Earlier investigations showed local minima in the monopole-antimonopole potential in U(1) gauge theory on the lattice. In this paper we localize monopoles of Monte-Carlo configurations. A statistical analysis of localization measurements gives us the probability density which we compare with the potential found in [1]. We find the monopoles mainly located either in the center of three-dimensional cubes or on the interface between two cubes. This agrees with the position of minima and maxima of the monopole-antimonopole potential.

Shape vibrations of topological fermions

We analyze the model of topological fermions, where charged fermions are treated as topological solitons. We discuss vibrations of soliton shapes. It is shown that depending on the power of the potential term (discrete parameter m) of the model Lagrangian the spectrum of normal mode frequencies can be discrete (for m = 1) or continuous (for integer m > 1).

Center Vortices and the Dirac Spectrum

We study correlations between center vortices and the low-lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator, in both the overlap and asqtad formulations. In particular we address a puzzle raised some years ago by Gattnar et al. [Nucl. Phys. B 716, 105 (2005)], who noted that the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes required for chiral symmetry breaking do not appear to be present in center-projected configurations. We show that the low-lying modes are in fact present in the staggered (asqtad) formulation, but not in the overlap and ``chirally improved'' formulations, and suggest a reason for this difference. We also confirm and extend the results of Kovalenko et al. [Phys. Lett. B 648, 383 (2007)], showing that there is a correlation between center vortex locations, and the scalar density of low-lying Dirac eigenmodes derived from unprojected configurations. This correlation is strongest at points which are associated, in the vortex picture, with non-vanishing topological charge density, such as vortex intersection and ``writhing'' points. We present supporting evidence that the lowest Dirac eigenmodes, in both asqtad and overlap formulations, have their largest concentrations in point-like regions, rather than on submanifolds of higher dimensionality.

Kinematics and Quantum Field Theory of the Neutrino Oscillations Observed in the Time-modulated Orbital Electron Capture Decay in an Ion Storage Ring

According to the recent experimental data of a GSI--experiment, the rate of the number of daughter ions $^{140}{\rm Ce}^{58+}$, produced by a nuclear K--shell electron capture (EC) of the H--like ion ${^{140}}{\rm Pr}^{58+}$, is modulated in time with a period $T_d=(7.06\pm 8) $seconds. We explain this phenomenon by neutrino--flavour mixing and show that this can be understood within standard quantum field theory and derive a value for the squared mass difference $Δm^2_{21}=m^2_2-m^2_1=(0.763\pm 8) \cdot 10^{-4} \mathrm{eV}^2$. This proves that such processes provide a precise method to investigate neutrino--flavour mixing.

Tests of the lattice index theorem

We investigate the lattice index theorem and the localization of the zero-modes for thick classical center vortices. For non-orientable spherical vortices, the index of the overlap Dirac operator differs from the topological charge although the traces of the plaquettes deviate only by a maximum of 1.5% from trivial plaquettes. This may be related to the fact that even in Landau gauge some links of these configuration are close to the non-trivial center elements.
