Hidden Local Symmetry and Infinite Tower of Vector Mesons for Baryons

In an effort to access dense baryonic matter relevant for compact stars in a unified framework that handles both single baryon and multibaryon systems on the same footing, we first address a holographic dual action for a single baryon focusing on the role of the infinite tower of vector mesons deconstructed from five dimensions. To leading order in 't Hooft coupling $λ=N_c g_{\rm YM}^2$, one has the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Skyrmion that results when the warping of the bulk background and the Chern-Simons term in the Sakai-Sugimoto D4/D8-${\bar{\rm D8}}$ model are ignored. The infinite tower was found by Sutcliffe to induce flow to a conformal theory, i.e., the BPS. We compare this structure to that of the SS model consisting of a 5D Yang-Mills action in warped space and the Chern-Simons term in which higher vector mesons are integrated out while preserving hidden local symmetry and valid to $O(λ^0)$ and $O(p^4)$ in the chiral counting. We point out the surprisingly important role of the $ω$ meson that figures in the Chern-Simons term that encodes chiral anomaly in the baryon structure and that may be closely tied to short-range repulsion in nuclear interactions.

Dilaton-Limit Fixed Point in Hidden Local Symmetric Parity Doublet Model

We study nucleon structure with positive and negative parities using a parity doublet model endowed with hidden local symmetry (HLS) with the objective to probe dense baryonic matter. The model -- that we shall refer to as "PDHLS model" for short -- allows a chiral-invariant mass of the nucleons unconnected to spontaneously broken chiral symmetry which comes out to be m_0 ~ 200 MeV at tree level from fitting to the decay width of the parity doubler, N(1535), to nucleon-pion and nucleon axial coupling g_A=1.267. The presence of a substantial m_0 that remains non-vanishing at chiral restoration presents a deep issue for the origin of the nucleon mass as well as will affect nontrivially the equation of state for dense baryonic matter relevant for compact stars. We construct a chiral perturbation theory at one-loop order and explore the phase structure of the model using renormalization group equations. We find a fixed point that corresponds exactly to the "dilaton limit" at which the HLS vector mesons decouple from the nucleons before reaching the vector manifestation fixed point. We suggest that cold baryonic system will flow to this limit as density increases toward that of chiral restoration.

Triple layered compact star with strange quark matter

We explore the possibility of three phases in the core of neutron star in a form of triple layers. From the center, strange quark matter, kaon condensed nuclear matter and nuclear matter form a triple layer. We discuss how the phase of strange quark matter is smoothly connected to kaon condensed nuclear matter phase. We also demonstrate that the compact star with triple layered structure can be a model compatible with the 1.97-solar-mass object PSR J1614-2230 recently observed.

Dense Stellar Matter with Strange Quark Matter Driven by Kaon Condensation

The core of neutron-star matter is supposed to be at a much higher density than the normal nuclear matter density for which various possibilities have been suggested such as, for example, meson or hyperon condensation and/or deconfined quark or color-superconducting matter. In this work, we explore the implication on hadron physics of a dense compact object that has three "phases", nuclear matter at the outer layer, kaon condensed nuclear matter in the middle and strange quark matter at the core. Using a drastically simplified but not unreasonable model, we develop the scenario where the different phases are smoothly connected with the kaon condensed matter playing a role of "doorway" to a quark core, the equation of state (EoS) of which with parameters restricted within the range allowed by nature could be made compatible with the mass vs. radius constraint given by the 1.97-solar mass object PSR J1614-2230 recently observed.

Cold Dense Baryonic Matter and Compact Stars

Probing dense hadronic matter is thus far an uncharted field of physics. Here we give a brief summary of the highlights of what has been so far accomplished and what will be done in the years ahead by the World Class University III Project at Hanyang University in the endeavor to unravel and elucidate the multifacet of the cold dense baryonic matter existing in the interior of the densest visible stable object in the Universe, i.e., neutron stars, strangeness stars and/or quark stars, from a modest and simplified starting point of an effective field theory modeled on the premise of QCD as well as from a gravity dual approach of hQCD. The core of the matter of our research is the possible origin of the $\sim 99%$ of the proton mass that is to be accounted for and how the "vacuum" can be tweaked so that the source of the mass generation can be uncovered by measurements made in terrestrial as well as space laboratories. Some of the issues treated in the program concern what can be done - both theoretically and experimentally - in anticipation of what's to come for basic physics research in Korea.

The Dropping of In-Medium Hadron Mass in Holographic QCD

We study the baryon density dependence of the vector meson spectrum using the D4/D6 system together with the compact D4 baryon vertex. We find that the vector meson mass decreases almost linearly in density at low density for small quark mass, but saturates to a finite non-zero value for large density. We also compute the density dependence of the $η\prime$ mass and the $η\prime$ velocity. We find that in medium, our model is consistent with the GMOR relation up to a few times the normal nuclear density. We compare our hQCD predictions with predictions made based on hidden local gauge theory that is constructed to model QCD.

Conformal anomaly and the vector coupling in dense matter

We construct an effective chiral Lagrangian for hadrons implemented by the conformal invariance and discuss the properties of nuclear matter at high density. The model is formulated based on two alternative assignment, "naive" and mirror, of chirality to the nucleons. It is shown that taking the dilaton limit, in which the mended symmetry of Weinberg is manifest, the vector-meson Yukawa coupling becomes suppressed and the symmetry energy becomes softer as one approaches the chiral phase transition. This leads to softer equations of state (EoS) and could accommodate the EoS without any exotica consistent with the recent measurement of a $1.97 \pm 0.04\,M_\odot$ neutron star.

Integrating Holographic Vector Dominance to Hidden Local Symmetry for the Nucleon Form Factor

We derive a two-parameter formula for the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon described as an instanton by "integrating out" all KK modes other than the lowest mesons from the infinite-tower of vector mesons in holographic QCD while preserving hidden local symmetry for the resultant vector fields. With only two parameters, the proton Sachs form factors can be fit surprisingly well to the available experimental data for momentum transfers $Q^2\lsim 0.5$ GeV$^2$ with $χ^2$/dof $\lsim 2$. We interpret this agreement as indicating the importance of an infinite tower in the soliton structure of the nucleon. The prediction of the Sakai-Sugimoto holographic dual model is checked against the fit values to assess its accuracy in describing the proton structure. We find that the structure of the "core" of roughly 1/3 in the proton size indicated in experiments and commonly associated with an intrinsic quark-gluon structure in QCD is "hidden" in the infinite tower in the holographic model.

Subtle Is The Manifestation Of Chiral Symmetry In Nuclei And Dense Nuclear Matter

The history of how chiral symmetry has entered in nuclear physics, in which Gerry Brown and I have participated from 1970 up to today, is described from my personal viewpoint. The route of development we have traversed together goes from meson exchange currents, to "little chiral bag," to chiral effective field theory, to "Brown-Rho scaling" and then to dense matter and chiral phase transition. It has been a great fun and exciting, some right and some wrong in what we have done together, but none that can be dismissed as "not even wrong." We have found all along that whatever signal there may be for the manifestation of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium, be it at low density in meson exchange currents or at high density approaching the chiral phase transition, is very similar in its intricacy and subtlety.

Effective Field Theory and High-Precision Calculations of Nuclear Electroweak Processes

High-precision calculations of electroweak processes in light nuclei are of great importance for multiple reasons. Gerry Brown together with Dan-Olof Riska published in 1972 a famous calculation on radiative capture of a thermal neutron on a proton, and their work was a precursor of subsequent great developments in high-precision calculations of electroweak processes in light nuclei. The application of effective field theory to nuclear systems is a prominent example of these developments. We present an overview of it with main emphasis placed on those topics in which we ourselves have been involved.

Half-Skyrmions, Tensor Forces and Symmetry Energy in Cold Dense Matter

In a previous article, the 4D half-skyrmion (or 5D dyonic salt) structure of dense baryonic matter described in crystalline configuration in the large $N_c$ limit was shown to impact nontrivially on how anti-kaons behave in compressed nuclear matter with a possible implication on an "ice-9" phenomenon of deeply bound kaonic matter and condensed kaons in compact stars. We extend the analysis to make a further prediction on the scaling properties of hadrons that have a surprising effect on the nuclear tensor forces, the symmetry energy and hence on the phase structure at high density. We treat this problem relying on certain topological structure of chiral solitons. Combined with what can be deduced from hidden local symmetry for hadrons in dense medium and the "soft" dilatonic degree of freedom associated with the trace anomaly of QCD, we uncover a novel structure of chiral symmetry in the "supersoft" symmetry energy that can influence the structure of neutron stars.

The prediction of the Sakai-Sugimoto holographic dual model is checked against the fit values that we interpret as representing Nature. The nature of the "core" in the nucleon structure is reassessed in light of the results obtained with the infinite-tower structure.

Toward an Effective Field Theory for Cold Compressed Baryonic Matter

This is an extended version of the note taken by the first author (W.-G.P.) on a lecture given by the second author (M.R.) as a first part of the series on "Hadronic Matter Under Extreme Conditions," the principal theme of the WCU-Hanyang Program. It covers the attempts to go in a framework anchored on effective field theory of QCD from zero density to the nuclear matter density and slightly beyond, with the ultimate goal of arriving at the density relevant to compact stars, including chiral phase transition and quark matter. The focus is on the conceptual aspects rather than detailed "fitting" of the data on the kinds of physics that are being addressed to in radioactive-ion-beam machines in operation as well as in project (such as `KoRIA' in Korea) and will be explored at such forthcoming accelerators as FAIR/GSI. The approach presented here is basically different from the standard ones found in the literature in that the notion of hidden local symmetry -- which underlies the chiral symmetry of the strong interactions -- and its generalization to dual gravity description involving infinite tower of hidden gauge fields are closely relied on.

Cold Compressed Baryonic Matter with Hidden Local Symmetry and Holography

I describe a novel phase structure of cold dense baryonic matter predicted in a hidden local symmetry approach anchored on gauge theory and in a holographic dual approach based on the Sakai-Sugimoto model of string theory. This new phase is populated with baryons with half-instanton quantum number in the gravity sector which is dual to half-skyrmion in gauge sector in which chiral symmetry is restored while light-quark hadrons are in the color-confined phase. It is suggested that such a phase that aries at a density above that of normal nuclear matter and below or at the chiral restoration point can have a drastic influence on the properties of hadrons at high density, in particular on short-distance interactions between nucleons, e.g., multi-body forces at short distance and hadrons -- in particular kaons -- propagating in a dense medium. Potentially important consequences on the structure of compact stars will be predicted.

Dileptons Get Nearly "Blind" to Mass-Scaling Effects In Hot and/or Dense Matter

Based on BHHRS and further sharpened by discussions with Gerry Brown that I had in October 2008, we arrive at the present assessment of the dilepton saga, namely, that dileptons become "blind" to changes in the vacuum structure of chiral symmetry (such as, e.g., BR scaling at high temperature and/or at high density and hence are {\em not} an appropriate probe for a signal for partial or complete chiral restoration, contrary to what has been widely believed. There, however, are a variety of indirect indications that the scaling notion is qualitatively, if not quantitatively, valid and should work in various low-energy nuclear phenomena, and it is fair to conclude that while there is no direct evidence for the scaling notion, there is {\em none against} it either, in a strong disagreement with what was claimed in CERN Courier November 2009. I will touch briefly on certain observables that could give a clear-cut litmus signal for the vacuum structure of chiral symmetry modified by temperature and/or density.

Kaons in Dense Half-Skyrmion Matter

Dense hadronic matter at low temperature is expected to be in crystal and at high density make a transition to a {\em chirally restored but color-confined} state which is a novel phase hitherto unexplored. This phase transition is predicted in both skyrmion matter in 4D and instanton matter in 5D, the former in the form of half-skyrmions and the latter in the form of half-instantons or dyons. We predict that when $K^-$'s are embedded in this half-skyrmion or half-instanton (dyonic) matter which may be reached not far above the normal density, there arises an enhanced attraction from the soft dilaton field figuring for the trace anomaly of QCD and the Wess-Zumino term. This attraction may have relevance for a possible strong binding of anti-kaons in dense nuclear matter and for kaon condensation in neutron-star matter. Such kaon property in the half-skyrmion phase is highly non-perturbarive and may not be accessible by low-order chiral perturbation theory. Relevance of the half-skyrmion or dyonic matter to compact stars is discussed.

Dense QCD: a Holographic Dyonic Salt

Dense QCD at zero temperature with a large number of colors is a crystal. We show that in the holographic dual description, the crystal is made out of pairs of dyons with $e=g=\pm 1$ charges in a salt-like arrangement. We argue that with increasing density the dyon masses and topological charges equalize, turning the salt-like configuration to a bcc of half-instantons. The latter is dual to a cubic crystal of half-skyrmions. We estimate the transition from an fcc crystal of instantons to a bcc crystal of dyons to about 3 times nuclear matter density with a dyon binding energy of about 180 MeV.

Dilatons for Dense Hadronic Matter

The idea that the explicit breaking of scale invariance by the trace anomaly of QCD can be rephrased as a spontaneous breaking has been recently exploited to capture the low-energy strong interaction dynamics of dense (and also hot) matter in terms of two dilaton fields, the "soft" (chi_s) and the "hard" (chi_h) fields, in the frame work of the hidden local gauge symmetry. In the Freund-Nambu model, the spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale symmetry is induced by an explicitly breaking term, while the spontaneous symmetry breaking is possible in the flat potential model which is scale symmetric. We discuss the interplay of the soft and hard dilatons using the spontaneously broken scale symmetry schemes and uncover a novel structure of dense matter hitherto unexplored.
