Non-interpenetration conditions in the passage from nonlinear to linearized Griffith fracture

We characterize the passage from nonlinear to linearized Griffith-fracture theories under non-interpenetration constraints. In particular, sequences of deformations satisfying a Ciarlet-Nečas condition in SBV^2 and for which a convergence of the energies is ensured, are shown to admit asymptotic representations in GSBD^2 satisfying a suitable contact condition. With an explicit counterexample, we prove that this result fails if convergence of the energies does not hold. We further prove that each limiting displacement satisfying the contact condition can be approximated by an energy-convergent sequence of deformations fulfilling a Ciarlet-Nečas condition. The proof relies on a piecewise Korn-Poincaré inequality in GSBD2, on a careful blow-up analysis around jump points, as well as on a refined GSBD^2-density result guaranteeing enhanced contact conditions for the approximants.

Nonlinear and Linearized Models in Thermoviscoelasticity

We consider a quasistatic nonlinear model in thermoviscoelasticity at a finite-strain setting in the Kelvin-Voigt rheology where both the elastic and viscous stress tensors comply with the principle of frame indifference under rotations. The force balance is formulated in the reference configuration by resorting to the concept of nonsimple materials whereas the heat transfer equation is governed by the Fourier law in the deformed configurations. Weak solutions are obtained by means of a staggered in-time discretization where the deformation and the temperature are updated alternatingly. Our result refines a recent work by Mielke & Roub\'ıček [arXiv:1903.11094] since our approximation does not require any regularization of the viscosity term. Afterwards, we focus on the case of deformations near the identity and small temperatures, and we show by a rigorous linearization procedure that weak solutions of the nonlinear system converge in a suitable sense to solutions of a system in linearized thermoviscoelasticity. The same property holds for time-discrete approximations and we provide a corresponding commutativity result.

From atomistic systems to linearized continuum models for elastic materials with voids

We study an atomistic model that describes the microscopic formation of material voids inside elastically stressed solids under an additional curvature regularization at the discrete level. Using a discrete-to-continuum analysis, by means of a recent geometric rigidity result in variable domains [27] and Γ-convergence tools, we rigorously derive effective linearized continuum models for elastically stressed solids with material voids in three-dimensional elasticity.

Stability of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ configurations in 3D

Inspired by the issue of stability of molecular structures, we investigate the strict minimality of point sets with respect to configurational energies featuring two- and three-body contributions. Our main focus is on characterizing those configurations which cannot be deformed without changing distances between first neighbors or angles formed by pairs of first neighbors. Such configurations are called {\it angle-rigid}. We tackle this question in the class of finite configurations in $\mathbb{Z}^2$, seen as planar three-dimensional point sets. A sufficient condition preventing angle-rigidity is presented. This condition is also proved to be necessary when restricted to specific subclasses of configurations.

Derivation of a one-dimensional von Kármán theory for viscoelastic ribbons

We consider a two-dimensional model of viscoelastic von Kármán plates in the Kelvin's-Voigt's rheology derived from a three-dimensional model at a finite-strain setting. As the width of the plate goes to zero, we perform a dimension-reduction from 2D to 1D and identify an effective one-dimensional model for a viscoelastic ribbon comprising stretching, bending, and twisting both in the elastic and the viscous stress. Our arguments rely on the abstract theory of gradient flows in metric spaces by Sandier and Serfaty and complement the $Γ$-convergence analysis of elastic von Kármán ribbons in [Freddi et al., 2018]. Besides convergence of the gradient flows, we also show convergence of associated time-discrete approximations, and we provide a corresponding commutativity result.

Tilings with nonflat squares: a characterization

Inspired by the modelization of 2D materials systems, we characterize arrangements of identical nonflat squares in 3D. We prove that the fine geometry of such arrangements is completely characterized in terms of patterns of mutual orientations of the squares and that these patterns are periodic and one-dimensional. In contrast to the flat case, the nonflatness of the tiles gives rise to nontrivial geometries, with configurations bending, wrinkling, or even rolling up in one direction.

Lattice ground states for Embedded-Atom Models in 2D and 3D

The Embedded-Atom Model (EAM) provides a phenomenological description of atomic arrangements in metallic systems. It consists of a configurational energy depending on atomic positions and featuring the interplay of two-body atomic interactions and nonlocal effects due to the corresponding electronic clouds. The purpose of this paper is to mathematically investigate the minimization of the EAM energy among lattices in two and three dimensions. We present a suite of analytical and numerical results under different reference choices for the underlying interaction potentials. In particular, Gaussian, inverse-power, and Lennard-Jones-type interactions are addressed.

Equilibrium of immersed hyperelastic solids

We discuss different equilibrium problems for hyperelastic solids immersed in a fluid at rest. In particular, solids are subjected to gravity and hydrostatic pressure on their immersed boundaries. By means of a variational approach, we discuss free-floating bodies, anchored solids, and floating vessels. Conditions for the existence of local and global energy minimizers are presented.

Lower semicontinuity for functionals defined on piecewise rigid functions and on $GSBD$

In this work, we provide a characterization result for lower semicontinuity of surface energies defined on piecewise rigid functions, i.e., functions which are piecewise affine on a Caccioppoli partition where the derivative in each component is a skew symmetric matrix. This characterization is achieved by means of an integral condition, called $BD$-ellipticity, which is in the spirit of $BV$-ellipticity defined by Ambrosio and Braides. By specific examples we show that this novel concept is in fact stronger compared to its $BV$ analog. We further provide a sufficient condition implying $BD$-ellipticity which we call symmetric joint convexity. This notion can be checked explicitly for certain classes of surface energies which are relevant for applications, e.g., for variational fracture models. Finally, we give a direct proof that surface energies with symmetric jointly convex integrands are lower semicontinuous also on the larger space of $GSBD^p$ functions.

Emergence of rigid Polycrystals from atomistic Systems with Heitmann-Radin sticky disk energy

We investigate the emergence of rigid polycrystalline structures from atomistic particle systems. The atomic interaction is governed by a suitably normalized pair interaction energy, where the `sticky disk' interaction potential models the atoms as hard spheres that interact when they are tangential. The discrete energy is frame invariant and no underlying reference lattice on the atomistic configurations is assumed. By means of $Γ$-convergence, we characterize the asymptotic behavior of configurations with finite surface energy scaling in the infinite particle limit. The effective continuum theory is described in terms of a piecewise constant field delineating the local orientation and micro-translation of the configuration. The limiting energy is local and concentrated on the grain boundaries, i.e., on the boundaries of the zones where the underlying microscopic configuration has constant parameters. The corresponding surface energy density depends on the relative orientation of the two grains, their microscopic translation misfit, and the normal to the interface. We further provide a fine analysis of the surface energies at grain boundaries both for vacuum-solid and solid-solid phase transitions. The latter relies fundamentally on a structure result for grain boundaries showing that due to the extremely brittle setup interpolating boundary layers near cracks are energetically not favorable.

$Γ$-convergence for free-discontinuity problems in linear elasticity: Homogenization and relaxation

We analyze the $Γ$-convergence of sequences of free-discontinuity functionals arising in the modeling of linear elastic solids with surface discontinuities, including phenomena as fracture, damage, or material voids. We prove compactness with respect to $Γ$-convergence and represent the $Γ$-limit in an integral form defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$). We identify the integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas and prove a non-interaction property between bulk and surface contributions. Eventually, we investigate sequences of corresponding boundary value problems and show convergence of minimum values and minimizers. In particular, our techniques allow to characterize relaxations of functionals on $GSBD^p$, and cover the classical case of periodic homogenization.

Integral representation for energies in linear elasticity with surface discontinuities

In this paper we prove an integral representation formula for a general class of energies defined on the space of generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^p$) in arbitrary space dimensions. Functionals of this type naturally arise in the modeling of linear elastic solids with surface discontinuities including phenomena as fracture, damage, surface tension between different elastic phases, or material voids. Our approach is based on the global method for relaxation devised in Bouchittè et al. '98 and a recent Korn-type inequality in $GSBD^p$ (Cagnetti-Chambolle-Scardia '20). Our general strategy also allows to generalize integral representation results in $SBD^p$, obtained in dimension two (Conti-Focardi-Iurlano '16), to higher dimensions, and to revisit results in the framework of generalized special functions of bounded variation ($GSBV^p$).

Two-well linearization for solid-solid phase transitions

In this paper we consider nonlinearly elastic, frame-indifferent, and singularly perturbed two-well models for materials undergoing solid-solid phase transitions in any space dimensions, and we perform a simultaneous passage to sharp-interface and small-strain limits. Sequences of deformations with equibounded energies are decomposed via suitable Caccioppoli partitions into the sum of piecewise constant rigid movements and suitably rescaled displacements. These converge to limiting partitions, deformations, and displacements, respectively. Whereas limiting deformations are simple laminates whose gradients only attain two values, the limiting displacements belong to the class of special functions with bounded variation (SBV). The latter feature elastic contributions measuring the distance to simple laminates, as well as jumps associated to two consecutive phase transitions having vanishing distance, and thus not being detected by the limiting deformations. By Gamma-convergence we identify an effective limiting model given by the sum of a quadratic linearized elastic energy in terms of displacements along with two surface terms. The first one is proportional to the total length of interfaces created by jumps in the gradient of the limiting deformation. The second one is proportional to twice the total length of interfaces created by jumps in the limiting displacement, as well as by the boundaries of limiting partitions. A main tool of our analysis is a novel two-well rigidity estimate which has been derived in [32] for a model with anisotropic second-order perturbation.

Equilibrium configurations for epitaxially strained films and material voids in three-dimensional linear elasticity

We extend the results about existence of minimizers, relaxation, and approximation proven by Chambolle et al. in 2002 and 2007 for an energy related to epitaxially strained crystalline films, and by Braides, Chambolle, and Solci in 2007 for a class of energies defined on pairs of function-set. We study these models in the framework of three-dimensional linear elasticity, where a major obstacle to overcome is the lack of any 'a priori' assumption on the integrability properties of displacements. As a key tool for the proofs, we introduce a new notion of convergence for $(d{-}1)$-rectifiable sets that are jumps of $GSBD^p$ functions, called $σ^p_{\mathrm{sym}}$-convergence.

Ripples in graphene: A variational approach

Suspended graphene samples are observed to be gently rippled rather than being flat. In [M. Friedrich, U. Stefanelli. Graphene ground states, arXiv:1802.05049], we have checked that this nonplanarity can be rigorously described within the classical molecular-mechanical frame of configurational-energy minimization. There, we have identified all ground-state configurations with graphene topology with respect to classes of next-to-nearest neighbor interaction energies and classified their fine nonflat geometries. In this second paper on graphene nonflatness, we refine the analysis further and prove the emergence of wave patterning. Moving within the frame of [M. Friedrich, U. Stefanelli. Graphene ground states, arXiv:1802.05049], rippling formation in graphene is reduced to a two-dimensional problem for one-dimensional chains. Specifically, we show that almost minimizers of the configurational energy develop waves with specific wavelength, independently of the size of the sample. This corresponds remarkably to experiments and simulations.

Derivation of von Kármán plate theory in the framework of three-dimensional viscoelasticity

We apply a quasistatic nonlinear model for nonsimple viscoelastic materials at a finite-strain setting in the Kelvin's-Voigt's rheology to derive a viscoelastic plate model of von Kármán type. We start from time-discrete solutions to a model of three-dimensional viscoelasticity where the viscosity stress tensor complies with the principle of time-continuous frame-indifference. Combining the derivation of nonlinear plate theory by Friesecke, James and Müller, and the abstract theory of gradient flows in metric spaces by Sandier and Serfaty we perform a dimension-reduction from 3D to 2D and identify weak solutions of viscoelastic form of von Kármán plates.

Functionals defined on piecewise rigid functions: Integral representation and $Γ$-convergence

We analyze integral representation and $Γ$-convergence properties of functionals defined on \emph{piecewise rigid functions}, i.e., functions which are piecewise affine on a Caccioppoli partition where the derivative in each component is constant and lies in a set without rank-one connections. Such functionals account for interfacial energies in the variational modeling of materials which locally show a rigid behavior. Our results are based on localization techniques for $Γ$-convergence and a careful adaption of the global method for relaxation (Bouchitté et al. 1998, 2001) to this new setting, under rather general assumptions. They constitute a first step towards the investigation of lower semicontinuity, relaxation, and homogenization for free-discontinuity problems in spaces of (generalized) functions of bounded deformation.

Two-well rigidity and multidimensional sharp-interface limits for solid-solid phase transitions

We establish a quantitative rigidity estimate for two-well frame-indifferent nonlinear energies, in the case in which the two wells have exactly one rank-one connection. Building upon this novel rigidity result, we then analyze solid-solid phase transitions in arbitrary space dimensions, under a suitable anisotropic penalization of second variations. By means of $Γ$-convergence, we show that, as the size of transition layers tends to zero, singularly perturbed two-well problems approach an effective sharp-interface model. The limiting energy is finite only for deformations which have the structure of a laminate. In this case, it is proportional to the total length of the interfaces between the two phases.
