Numerical approximation of von Kármán viscoelastic plates

We consider metric gradient flows and their discretizations in time and space. We prove an abstract convergence result for time-space discretizations and identify their limits as curves of maximal slope. As an application, we consider a finite element approximation of a quasistatic evolution for viscoelastic von Kármán plates. Computational experiments are provided, too.

Finite crystallization and Wulff shape emergence for ionic compounds in the square lattice

We present two-dimensional crystallization results in the square lattice for finite particle systems consisting of two different atomic types. We identify energy minimizers of configurational energies featuring two-body short-ranged particle interactions which favor some reference distance between different atomic types and contain repulsive contributions for atoms of the same type. We first prove that ground states are connected subsets of the square lattice with alternating arrangement of the two atomic types in the crystal lattice, and address the emergence of a square macroscopic Wulff shape for an increasing number of particles. We then analyze the signed difference of the number of the two atomic types, the so-called net charge, for which we prove the sharp scaling ${\rm O}(n^{1/4})$ in terms of the particle number $n$. Afterwards, we investigate the model under prescribed net charge. We provide a characterization for the minimal energy and identify a critical net charge beyond which crystallization in the square lattice fails. Finally, for this specific net charge we prove a crystallization result and identify a diamond-like Wulff-shape of energy minimizers which illustrates the sensitivity of the macroscopic geometry on the net charge.

Crystallization in a one-dimensional periodic landscape

We consider the crystallization problem for a finite one-dimensional collection of identical hard spheres in a periodic energy landscape. This issue arises in connection with the investigation of crystalline states of ionic dimers, as well as in epitaxial growth on a crystalline substrate in presence of lattice mismatch. Depending on the commensurability of the radius of the sphere and the period of the landscape, we discuss the possible emergence of crystallized states. In particular, we prove that crystallization in arbitrarily long chains is generically not to be expected.

Atomistic potentials and the Cauchy-Born rule for carbon nanotubes: a review

Carbon nanotubes are modeled as point particle configurations in the framework of Molecular Mechanics, where interactions are described by means of short range attractive-repulsive potentials. The identification of local energy minimizers yields a variational description for the stability of rolled-up hexagonal-lattice structures. Optimality of periodic configurations is preserved under moderate tension, hence justifying the elastic behavior of carbon nanotubes in the axial traction regime.

Griffith energies as small strain limit of nonlinear models for nonsimple brittle materials

We consider a nonlinear, frame indifferent Griffith model for nonsimple brittle materials where the elastic energy also depends on the second gradient of the deformations. In the framework of free discontinuity and gradient discontinuity problems, we prove existence of minimizers for boundary value problems. We then pass to a small strain limit in terms of suitably rescaled displacement fields and show that the nonlinear energies can be identified with a linear Griffith model in the sense of $Γ$-convergence. This complements the study in [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 225 (2017), 425-467] by providing a linearization result in arbitrary space dimensions.

Crystallization in the hexagonal lattice for ionic dimers

We consider finite discrete systems consisting of two different atomic types and investigate ground-state configurations for configurational energies featuring two-body short-ranged particle interactions. The atomic potentials favor some reference distance between different atomic types and include repulsive terms for atoms of the same type, which are typical assumptions in models for ionic dimers. Our goal is to show a two-dimensional crystallization result. More precisely, we give conditions in order to prove that energy minimizers are connected subsets of the hexagonal lattice where the two atomic types are alternately arranged in the crystal lattice. We also provide explicit formulas for the ground-state energy. Finally, we characterize the net charge, i.e., the difference of the number of the two atomic types. Analyzing the deviation of configurations from the hexagonal Wulff shape, we prove that for ground states consisting of n particles the net charge is at most of order O(n^{1/4}) where the scaling is sharp.

A compactness result in $GSBV^p$ and applications to $Γ$-convergence for free discontinuity problems

We present a compactness result in the space $GSBV^p$ which extends the classical statement due to Ambrosio to problems without a priori bounds on the deformations. As an application, we revisit the $Γ$-convergence results for free discontinuity functionals established recently by Cagnetti, Dal Maso, Scardia, and Zeppieri. We investigate sequences of boundary value problems and show convergence of minimum values and minimizers.

Quasistatic crack growth in 2d-linearized elasticity

In this paper we prove a two-dimensional existence result for a variational model of crack growth for brittle materials in the realm of linearized elasticity. Starting with a time-discretized version of the evolution driven by a prescribed boundary load, we derive a time-continuous quasistatic crack growth in the framework of generalized special functions of bounded deformation (GSBD). As the time-discretization step tends to $0$, the major difficulty lies in showing the stability of the static equilibrium condition, which is achieved by means of a Jump Transfer Lemma generalizing the result of Francfort and Larsen [Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 56 (2003), 1465--1500] to the GSBD setting. Moreover, we present a general compactness theorem for this framework and prove existence of the evolution without the necessity of a-priori bounds on the displacements or applied body forces.

Characterization of optimal carbon nanotubes under stretching and validation of the Cauchy-Born rule

Carbon nanotubes are modeled as point configurations and investigated by minimizing configurational energies including two-and three-body interactions. Optimal configurations are identified with local minima and their fine geometry is fully characterized in terms of lower-dimensional problems. Under moderate tension, we prove the existence of periodic local minimizers, which indeed validates the so-called Cauchy-Born rule in this setting.

On the passage from nonlinear to linearized viscoelasticity

We formulate a quasistatic nonlinear model for nonsimple viscoelastic materials at a finite-strain setting in the Kelvin's-Voigt's rheology where the viscosity stress tensor complies with the principle of time-continuous frame-indifference. We identify weak solutions in the nonlinear framework as limits of time-incremental problems for vanishing time increment. Moreover, we show that linearization around the identity leads to the standard system for linearized viscoelasticity and that solutions of the nonlinear system converge in a suitable sense to solutions of the linear one. The same property holds for time-discrete approximations and we provide a corresponding commutativity result. Our main tools are the theory of gradient flows in metric spaces and Gamma-convergence.

A piecewise Korn inequality in SBD and applications to embedding and density results

We present a piecewise Korn inequality for generalized special functions of bounded deformation ($GSBD^2$) in a planar setting generalizing the classical result in elasticity theory to the setting of functions with jump discontinuities. We show that for every configuration there is a partition of the domain such that on each component of the cracked body the distance of the function from an infinitesimal rigid motion can be controlled solely in terms of the linear elastic strain. In particular, the result implies that $GSBD^2$ functions have bounded variation after subtraction of a piecewise infinitesimal rigid motion. As an application we prove a density result in $GSBD^2$. Moreover, for all $d \ge 2$ we show $GSBD^2(Ω) \subset (GBV(Ω;{\Bbb R}))^d$ and the embedding $SBD^2(Ω) \cap L^\infty(Ω;{\Bbb R}^d) \hookrightarrow SBV(Ω;{\Bbb R}^d)$ into the space of special functions of bounded variation ($SBV$). Finally, we present a Korn-Poincaré inequality for functions with small jump sets in arbitrary space dimension.

Graphene ground states

Graphene is locally two-dimensional but not flat. Nanoscale ripples appear in suspended samples and rolling-up often occurs when boundaries are not fixed. We address this variety of graphene geometries by classifying all ground-state deformations of the hexagonal lattice with respect to configurational energies including two- and three-body terms. As a consequence, we prove that all ground-state deformations are either periodic in one direction, as in the case of ripples, or rolled up, as in the case of nanotubes.

On a decomposition of regular domains into John domains with uniform constants

We derive a decomposition result for regular, two-dimensional domains into John domains with uniform constants. We prove that for every simply connected domain $Ω\subset {\Bbb R}^2$ with $C^1$-boundary there is a corresponding partition $Ω= Ω_1 \cup \ldots \cup Ω_N$ with $\sum_{j=1}^N \mathcal{H}^1(\partial Ω_j \setminus \partial Ω) \le θ$ such that each component is a John domain with a John constant only depending on $θ$. The result implies that many inequalities in Sobolev spaces such as Poincaré's or Korn's inequality hold on the partition of $Ω$ for uniform constants, which are independent of $Ω$.

A Korn-type inequality in SBD for functions with small jump sets

We present a Korn-type inequality in a planar setting for special functions of bounded deformation. We prove that for each function in SBD$^2$ with sufficiently small jump set the distance of the function and its derivative from an infinitesimal rigid motion can be controlled in terms of the linearized elastic strain outside of a small exceptional set of finite perimeter. Particularly the result shows that each function in SBD$^2$ has bounded variation away from an arbitrarily small part of the domain.

A derivation of linearized Griffith energies from nonlinear models

We derive Griffith functionals in the framework of linearized elasticity from nonlinear and frame indifferent energies in brittle fracture via Gamma-convergence. The convergence is given in terms of rescaled displacement fields measuring the distance of deformations from piecewise rigid motions. The configurations of the limiting model consist of partitions of the material, corresponding piecewise rigid deformations and displacement fields which are defined separately on each component of the cracked body. Apart from the linearized Griffith energy the limiting functional comprises also the segmentation energy which is necessary to disconnect the parts of the specimen.

The geometry of C_60: a rigorous approach via Molecular Mechanics

Molecular Mechanics describes molecules as particle configurations interacting via classical potentials. These {\it configurational energies} usually consist of the sum of different phenomenological terms which are tailored to the description of specific bonding geometries. This approach is followed here to model the fullerene $C_{60}$, an allotrope of carbon corresponding to a specific hollow spherical structure of sixty atoms. We rigorously address different modeling options and advance a set of minimal requirements on the configurational energy able to deliver an accurate prediction of the fine three-dimensional geometry of $C_{60}$ as well as of its remarkable stability. In particular, the experimentally observed truncated-icosahedron structure with two different bond lengths is shown to be a strict local minimizer.

A Korn-Poincaré-type inequality for special functions of bounded deformation

We present a Korn-Poincaré-type inequality in a planar setting which is in the spirit of the Poincaré inequality in SBV due to De Giorgi, Carriero, Leaci. We show that for each function in SBD$^2$ one can find a modification which differs from the original displacement field only on a small set such that the distance of the modification from a suitable infinitesimal rigid motion can be controlled by an appropriate combination of the elastic and the surface energy. In particular, the result can be used to obtain compactness estimates for functions of bounded deformation.

A quantitative geometric rigidity result in SBD

We present a quantitative geometric rigidity estimate for special functions of bounded deformation in a planar setting generalizing the result by Friesecke, James, Müller obtained in nonlinear elasticity theory and the piecewise rigidity result by Chambolle, Giacomini, Ponsiglione for brittle materials which do not store elastic energy. We show that for each deformation there is an associated triple consisting of a partition of the domain, a corresponding piecewise rigid motion being constant on each connected component of the cracked body and a displacement field measuring the distance of the deformation from the piecewise rigid motion. We also present a related estimate in the geometrically linear setting which can be interpreted as a `piecewise Korn-Poincaré inequality'.
