Well posedness for systems of self-propelled particles

This paper deals with the existence and uniqueness of solutions to kinetic equations describing alignment of self-propelled particles. The particularity of these models is that the velocity variable is not on the euclidean space but constrained on the unit sphere (the self-propulsion constraint). Two related equations are considered : the first one in which the alignment mechanism is nonlocal, using an observation kernel depending on the space variable, and a second form which is purely local, corresponding to the principal order of a scaling limit of the first one. We prove local existence and uniqueness of weak solutions in both cases for bounded initial conditions (in space and velocity) with finite total mass. The solution is proven to depend continuously on the initial data in $L^p$ spaces with finite p. In the case of a bounded kernel of observation, we obtain that the solution is global in time. Finally by exploiting the fact that the second equation corresponds to the principal order of a scaling limit of the first one we deduce a Cauchy theory for an approximate problem approaching the second one.

Cauchy theory for general Vicsek models in collective dynamics and mean-field limit approximations

In this paper we provide a local Cauchy theory both on the torus and in the whole space for general Vicsek dynamics at the kinetic level. We consider rather general interaction kernels, nonlinear viscosity and nonlinear friction. Particularly, we include normalised kernels which display a singularity when the flux of particles vanishes. Thus, in terms of the Cauchy theory for the kinetic equation, we extend to more general interactions and complete the program initiated in Gamba et. al. (2016) (where the authors assume that the singularity does not take place) and in Figalli et. al. (2017) (where the authors prove that the singularity does not happen in the space homogeneous case). Moreover, we derive an explicit lower time of existence as well as a global existence criterion that is applicable, among other cases, to obtain a long time theory for non-renormalised kernels and for the original Vicsek problem without any a priori assumptions. On the second part of the paper, we also establish the mean-field limit in the large particle limit for an approximated (regularized) system that coincides with the original one whenever the flux does not vanish. Based on the results proved for the limit kinetic equation, we prove that for short times, the probability that the dynamics of this approximated particle system coincides with the original singular dynamics tends to one in the many particle limit.

Rigorous derivation of the Fick cross-diffusion system from the multi-species Boltzmann equation in the diffusive scaling

We present the arising of the Fick cross-diffusion system of equations for fluid mixtures from the multi-species Boltzmann in a rigorous manner in Sobolev spaces. To this end, we formally show that, in a diffusive scaling, the hydrodynamical limit of the kinetic system is the Fick model supplemented with a closure relation and we give explicit formulae for the macroscopic diffusion coefficients from the Boltzmann collision operator. Then, we provide a perturbative Cauchy theory in Sobolev spaces for the constructed Fick system, which turns out to be a dilated parabolic equation. We finally prove the stability of the system in the Boltzmann equation, ensuring a rigorous derivation between the two models.

Stability of the Maxwell-Stefan system in the diffusion asymptotics of the Boltzmann multi-species equation

We investigate the diffusion asymptotics of the Boltzmann equation for gaseous mixtures, in the perturbative regime around a local Maxwellian vector whose fluid quantities solve a flux-incompressible Maxwell-Stefan system. Our framework is the torus and we consider hard-potential collision kernels with angular cutoff. As opposed to existing results about hydrodynamic limits in the mono-species case, the local Maxwellian we study here is not a local equilibrium of the mixture due to cross-interactions. By means of a hypocoercive formalism and introducing a suitable modified Sobolev norm, we build a Cauchy theory which is uniform with respect to the Knudsen number $\eps$. In this way, we shall prove that the Maxwell-Stefan system is stable for the Boltzmann multi-species equation, ensuring a rigorous derivation in the vanishing limit $\eps\to 0$.

Perturbative Cauchy theory for a flux-incompressible Maxwell-Stefan system

Recently, the authors proved [2] that the Maxwell-Stefan system with an incompressibility-like condition on the total flux can be rigorously derived from the multi-species Boltzmann equation. Similar cross-diffusion models have been widely investigated, but the particular case of a perturbative incompressible setting around a non constant equilibrium state of the mixture (needed in [2]) seems absent of the literature. We thus establish a quantitative perturbative Cauchy theory in Sobolev spaces for it. More precisely, by reducing the analysis of the Maxwell-Stefan system to the study of a quasilinear parabolic equation on the sole concentrations and with the use of a suitable anisotropic norm, we prove global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions and their exponential trend to equilibrium in a perturbative regime around any macroscopic equilibrium state of the mixture. As a by-product, we show that the equimolar diffusion condition naturally appears from this perturbative incompressible setting.

The Boltzmann equation with an external force on the torus: Incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier hydrodynamical limit

We study the Boltzmann equation with external forces, not necessarily deriving from a potential, in the incompressible Navier-Stokes perturbative regime. On the torus, we establish local-in-time, for any time, Cauchy theories that are independent of the Knudsen number in Sobolev spaces. The existence is proved around a time-dependent Maxwellian that behaves like the global equilibrium both as time grows and as the Knudsen number decreases. We combine hypocoercive properties of linearized Boltzmann operators with linearization around a time-dependent Maxwellian that catches the fluctuations of the characteristics trajectories due to the presence of the force. This uniform theory is sufficiently robust to derive the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with an external force from the Boltzmann equation. Neither smallness, nor time-decaying assumption is required for the external force, nor a gradient form, and we deal with general hard potential and cut-off Boltzmann kernels. As a by-product the latest general theories for unit Knudsen number when the force is sufficiently small and decays in time are recovered.

Stability of the spectral gap for the Boltzmann multi-species operator linearized around non-equilibrium Maxwell distributions

We consider the Boltzmann operator for mixtures with cutoff Maxwellian, hard potentials, or hard spheres collision kernels. In a perturbative regime around the global Maxwellian equilibrium, the linearized Boltzmann multi-species operator $\mathbf{L}$ is known to possess an explicit spectral gap $λ_{\mathbf{L}}$, in the global equilibrium weighted $L^2$ space. We study a new operator $\mathbf{L^\varepsilon}$ obtained by linearizing the Boltzmann operator for mixtures around local Maxwellian distributions, where all the species evolve with different small macroscopic velocities of order $\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon >0$. This is a non-equilibrium state for the mixture. We establish a quasi-stability property for the Dirichlet form of $\mathbf{L^\varepsilon}$ in the global equilibrium weighted $L^2$ space. More precisely, we consider the explicit upper bound that has been proved for the entropy production functional associated to $\mathbf{L}$ and we show that the same estimate holds for the entropy production functional associated to $\mathbf{L^\varepsilon}$, up to a correction of order $\varepsilon$.

Isotropic diffeomorphisms: solutions to a differential system for a deformed random fields study

This Note presents the resolution of a differential system on the plane that translates a geometrical problem about isotropic deformations of area and length. The system stems from a probability study on deformed random fields [J.Fournier '17], which are the composition of a random field with invariance properties defined on the plane with a deterministic diffeomorphism. The explicit resolution of the differential system allows to prove that a weak notion of isotropy of the deformed field, linked to its excursion sets, in fact coincides with the strong notion of isotropy. The present Note first introduces the probability framework that gave rise to the geometrical issue and then proposes its resolution.

Perturbative theory for the Boltzmann equation in bounded domains with different boundary conditions

We study the Boltzmann equation near a global Maxwellian in the case of bounded domains. We consider the boundary conditions to be either specular reflections or Maxwellian diffusion. Starting from the reference work of Guo in $L^\infty_{x,v}\left(\left(1+|v|\right)^βe^{|v|^2/4}\right)$, we prove existence, uniqueness, continuity and positivity of solutions for less restrictive weights in the velocity variable; namely, polynomials and stretch exponentials. The methods developed here are constructive.

Stability of global equilibrium for the multi-species Boltzmann equation in $L^\infty$ settings

We prove the stability of global equilibrium in a multi-species mixture, where the different species can have different masses, on the $3$-dimensional torus. We establish stability estimates in $L^\infty_{x,v}(w)$ where $w=w(v)$ is either polynomial or exponential, with explicit threshold. Along the way we extend recent estimates and stability results for the mono-species Boltzmann operator not only to the multi-species case but also to more general hard potential and Maxwellian kernels.

The Boltzmann equation for a multi-species mixture close to global equilibrium

We study the Cauchy theory for a multi-species mixture, where the different species can have different masses, in a perturbative setting on the $3$-dimensional torus. The ultimate aim of this work is to obtain existence, uniqueness and exponential trend to equilibrium of solutions to the multi-species Boltzmann equation in $L^1_vL^\infty_x(m)$, where $m\sim (1+|v|^k)$ is a polynomial weight. We prove the existence of a spectral gap for the linear multi-species Boltzmann operator allowing different masses, and then we establish a semigroup property thanks to a new explicit coercive estimate for the Boltzmann operator. Then we develop an $L^2-L^\infty$ theory \textit{à la Guo} for the linear perturbed equation. Finally, we combine the latter results with a decomposition of the multi-species Boltzmann equation in order to deal with the full equation. We emphasize that dealing with different masses induces a loss of symmetry in the Boltzmann operator which prevents the direct adaptation of standard mono-species methods (\textit{e.g.} Carleman representation, Povzner inequality). Of important note is the fact that all methods used and developed in this work are constructive. Moreover, they do not require any Sobolev regularity and the $L^1_vL^\infty_x$ framework is dealt with for any $k>k_0$, recovering the optimal physical threshold of finite energy $k_0=2$ in the particular case of a multi-species hard spheres mixture with same masses.

Asymptotic Stability of the Boltzmann Equation with Maxwell Boundary Conditions

In a general $C^1$ domain, we study the perturbative Cauchy theory for the Boltzmann equation with Maxwell boundary conditions with an accommodation coefficient $α$ in $(\sqrt{2/3},1]$, and discuss this threshold. We consider polynomial or stretched exponential weights $m(v)$ and prove existence, uniqueness and exponential trend to equilibrium around a global Maxwellian in $L^\infty_{x,v}(m)$. Of important note is the fact that the methods do not involve contradiction arguments.

On the Cauchy problem for the homogeneous Boltzmann-Nordheim equation for bosons: local existence, uniqueness and creation of moments

The Boltzmann-Nordheim equation is a modification of the Boltzmann equation, based on physical considerations, that describes the dynamics of the distribution of particles in a quantum gas composed of bosons or fermions. In this work we investigate the Cauchy theory of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann-Nordheim equation for bosons, in dimension $d\geq 3$. We show existence and uniqueness locally in time for any initial data in $L^\infty\left(1+|v|^s\right)$ with finite mass and energy, for a suitable $s$, as well as the instantaneous creation of moments of all order.

From the Boltzmann equation to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the torus: a quantitative error estimate

We investigate the Boltzmann equation, depending on the Knudsen number, in the Navier-Stokes perturbative setting on the torus. Using hypocoercivity, we derive a new proof of existence and exponential decay for solutions close to a global equilibrium, with explicit regularity bounds and rates of convergence. These results are uniform in the Knudsen number and thus allow us to obtain a strong derivation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations as the Knudsen number tends to $0$. Moreover, our method is also used to deal with other kinetic models. Finally, we show that the study of the hydrodynamical limit is rather different on the torus than the one already proved in the whole space as it requires averaging in time, unless the initial layer conditions are satisfied.

Instantaneous filling of the vacuum for the full Boltzmann equation in convex domains

We prove the immediate appearance of a lower bound for mild solutions to the full Boltzmann equation in the torus or a $C^2$ convex domain with specular boundary conditions, under the sole assumption of continuity away from the grazing set of the solution. These results are entirely constructive if the domain is $C^3$ and strictly convex. We investigate a wide range of collision kernels, some satisfying Grad's cutoff assumption and others not. We show that this lower bound is exponential, independent of time and space with explicit constants depending only on the \textit{a priori} bounds on the solution. In particular, this lower bound is Maxwellian in the case of cutoff collision kernels. A thorough study of characteristic trajectories, as well as a geometric approach of grazing collisions against the boundary are derived.

From Boltzmann to incompressible Navier-Stokes in Sobolev spaces with polynomial weight

We study the Boltzmann equation on the $d$-dimensional torus in a perturbative setting around a global equilibrium under the Navier-Stokes linearisation. We use a recent functional analysis breakthrough to prove that the linear part of the equation generates a $C^0$-semigroup with exponential decay in Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces with polynomial weight, independently on the Knudsen number. Finally we show a Cauchy theory and an exponential decay for the perturbed Boltzmann equation, uniformly in the Knudsen number, in Sobolev spaces with polynomial weight. The polynomial weight is almost optimal and furthermore, this result only requires derivatives in the space variable and allows to connect to solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in these spaces.

Instantaneous exponential lower bound for solutions to the Boltzmann equation with Maxwellian diffusion boundary conditions

We prove the immediate appearance of an exponential lower bound, uniform in time and space, for continuous mild solutions to the full Boltzmann equation in a $C^2$ convex bounded domain with the physical Maxwellian diffusion boundary conditions, under the sole assumption of regularity of the solution. We investigate a wide range of collision kernels, with and without Grad's angular cutoff assumption. In particular, the lower bound is proven to be Maxwellian in the case of cutoff collision kernels. Moreover, these results are entirely constructive if the initial distribution contains no vacuum, with explicit constants depending only on the \textit{a priori} bounds on the solution.
