Performance of FBK VUV-HD3 and HPK VUV4 SiPMs in the Light-only Liquid Xenon (LoLX) Detector

Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are a critical technology for the next generation of rare-event search experiments using liquid xenon (LXe). LXe scintillation is emitted primarily in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV), requiring photosensors with high VUV detection efficiency under cryogenic operating conditions. Direct characterization of VUV-sensitive SiPMs in LXe is therefore important for informing detector design and comparing device response. This work presents a direct comparison of Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) VUV-HD3 and Hamamatsu (HPK) VUV4 SiPMs operated simultaneously within the Light-only Liquid Xenon (LoLX) detector. Using data collected with gamma sources placed outside the detector, we characterized the relative performance of these photosensors. Our analysis reveals that under these operating conditions, the HPK SiPMs observe 33-38% less light than the FBK devices, a larger difference than predicted by standard PDE models in vacuum measurements. We show that this discrepancy is resolved by an angular and wavelength dependent PDE model incorporating surface shadowing effects into our optical simulation, which then accurately reproduces the experimental data. This finding has significant implications for the selection and implementation of photosensors in future large-scale LXe detectors.

Rapid Autotuning of a SiGe Quantum Dot into the Single-Electron Regime with Machine Learning and RF-Reflectometry FPGA-Based Measurements

Spin qubits need to operate within a very precise voltage space around charge state transitions to achieve high-fidelity gates. However, the stability diagrams that allow the identification of the desired charge states are long to acquire. Moreover, the voltage space to search for the desired charge state increases quickly with the number of qubits. Therefore, faster stability diagram acquisitions are needed to scale up a spin qubit quantum processor. Currently, most methods focus on more efficient data sampling. Our approach shows a significant speedup by combining measurement speedup and a reduction in the number of measurements needed to tune a quantum dot device. Using an autotuning algorithm based on a neural network and faster measurements by harnessing the FPGA embedded in Keysight's Quantum Engineering Toolkit (QET), the measurement time of stability diagrams has been reduced by a factor of 9.8. This led to an acceleration factor of 2.2 for the total initialization time of a SiGe quantum dot into the single-electron regime, which is limited by the Python code execution.

Time-of-Flight X-ray Measurements for Computed Tomography

Time-of-flight (ToF) measurements is a possible alternative to anti-scatter grids in computed tomography (CT). Simulations have shown a possible 75% reduction in the detrimental scattering contribution with a 100 ps FWHM timing resolution. A test bench comprising a pulsed X-ray source and a time-correlated detector has been designed to demonstrate the feasibility of time-of-flight measurements of X-rays using readout electronics inherited from a ToF-positron emission tomography project. A 86 ps FWHM coincidence time resolution have been achieved with 511 keV annihilation gamma-rays and a 155 ps FWHM timing jitter with a 120 kVp pulsed X-rays source.
