Charging higher-dimensional spacetimes with a generalized Kerr-Schild transformation

We explore the construction of higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell(-Chern-Simons) solutions from vacuum seeds by means of a generalized Kerr-Schild transformation along a geodesic null vector field $\mathbf{k}$. Assuming the vector potential $\mathbf{A}$ to be aligned with $\mathbf{k}$, and $\mathbf{k}$ to be a Weyl aligned null direction satisfying the ``optical constraint'', we arrive at three distinct branches of solutions. If $\mathbf{k}$ is expanding and twisting, then its shear must vanish -- this branch includes certain charged Taub-NUT metrics. If $\mathbf{k}$ is expanding and twistfree, one finds two subfamilies: Robinson-Trautman electrovac solutions with a non-null Maxwell field if the shear is zero, or shearing solutions with a null field. Finally, the case when $\mathbf{k}$ is non-expanding reduces to a subset of the known Kundt solutions. In all cases, the Chern-Simons term turns out to be identically zero on-shell. In passing, by relaxing the alignment assumption on $\mathbf{A}$, we also obtain a six-dimensional extension of a charged Taub-NUT metric for which the magnetic part of the field strength is a linear combination of two distinct K\"ahler 2-forms, as opposed to the previously known examples in more than four dimensions.

On type II(D) Einstein spacetimes in six dimensions

After a concise overview of Einstein spacetimes of type II (or more special) in four and five dimensions, we summarize recent results in the six-dimensional case. We assume the optical matrix to be non-degenerate and ``generic'', and the Weyl tensor to fall off sufficiently rapidly at infinity. As it turns out, the most general metric is characterized by one discrete (normalized) and three continuous parameters, is of type D and belongs to the Kerr-Schild class. Its relation to the previously known Kerr-(A)dS and Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metrics is clarified.

Einstein-Maxwell fields as solutions of Einstein gravity coupled to conformally invariant non-linear electrodynamics

We study Einstein-Maxwell (non-null) sourcefree configurations that can be extended to any conformally invariant non-linear electrodynamics (CINLE) by a constant rescaling of the electromagnetic field. We first obtain a criterion which characterizes such extendable solutions in terms either of the electromagnetic invariants, or (equivalently) of the canonical Newman-Penrose form of the self-dual Maxwell field. This is then used to argue that all static configurations are extendable (more generally, all configurations admitting a non-null twistfree Killing vector field). One can thus draw from the extensive literature to straightforwardly extend to CINLE various known exact solutions, whereby the duality invariance of the Einstein-Maxwell theory allows for dyonic solutions even in more general theories. This is illustrated by a few explicit examples, including the homogeneous $\Lambda<0$ universe of Ozsv\'ath, a black hole in the universe of Levi-Civita, Bertotti and Robinson, a generalization of the charged $C$-metric, and non-expanding gravitational waves in the Bonnor-Melvin background.

On the uniqueness of the Kerr-(A)dS metric as a type II(D) solution in six dimensions

We study the class of six-dimensional $\Lambda$-vacuum spacetimes which admit a non-degenerate multiple Weyl aligned null direction l (thus being of Weyl type~II or more special) with a ``generic'' optical matrix. Subject to an additional assumption on the asymptotic fall-off of the Weyl tensor, we obtain the most general metric of this class, which is specified by one discrete (normalized) and three continuous parameters. All solutions turn out to be Kerr--Schild spacetimes of type~D and, in passing, we comment on their Kerr--Schild double copy. We further show that the obtained family is locally isometric to the general doubly-spinning Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metric with the NUTs parameters switched off. In particular, the Kerr-(A)dS subclass and its extensions (i.e., analytic continuation and ``infinite-rotation'' limit) are recovered when certain polynomial metric functions are assumed to be fully factorized. As a side result, a unified metric form which encompasses all three branches of the extended Kerr-(A)dS family in all even dimensions is presented in an appendix.

New look at AdS black holes with conformal scalar hair

We revisit static, spherically symmetric solutions to AdS-Einstein gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field (and no self-interaction potential) in four dimensions. We first observe that a convenient choice of coordinates leads to a significant simplification of the field equations, which enables one to identify various roots of the indicial equations and thus distinct branches of solutions. Next, we construct an explicit 2-parameter hairy black hole solution in terms of an infinite power series around the event horizon. The black hole is non-extremal with a regular scalar field on and outside the event horizon, and it reduces to the Schwarzschild-AdS metric in the limit of vanishing hair. Its properties are illustrated for various values of the parameters and compared with previous numerical results by other authors. In addition, the analysis reveals the presence of a photon sphere and how the scalar field affects its size and the angular radius of the corresponding shadow. The thermodynamics of the solution is also briefly discussed.

Charging Kerr-Schild spacetimes in higher dimensions

We study higher dimensional charged Kerr-Schild (KS) spacetimes that can be constructed by a KS transformation of a vacuum solution with an arbitrary cosmological constant, and for which the vector potential is aligned with the KS vector $\mathbf{k}$. Focusing on the case of an expanding $\mathbf{k}$, we first characterize the presence of shear as an obstruction to non-null fields (thereby extending an early no-go result of Myers and Perry). We next obtain the complete family of shearfree solutions. In the twistfree case, they coincide with charged Schwarzschild-Tangherlini-like black holes. Solutions with a twisting $\mathbf{k}$ consist of a four-parameter family of higher dimensional charged Taub-NUT metrics with a base space of constant holomorphic sectional curvature. In passing, we identify the configurations for which the test-field limit gives rise to instances of the KS double copy. Finally, it is shown that null fields define a branch of twistfree but shearing solutions, exemplified by the product of a Vaidya-like radiating spacetime with an extra dimension.

All non-expanding gravitational waves in $D$-dimensional (anti-)de Sitter space

We present a complete, theory-independent classification of $D$-dimensional Kundt spacetimes of Weyl and traceless-Ricci type N. We show that these geometries consist of three invariantly defined subfamilies, namely (generalized) Kundt, pp- and Siklos waves, for each of which we obtain a convenient canonical form. As a byproduct, this also demonstrates that such metrics coincide with the class of non-expanding (A)dS-Kerr-Schild spacetimes. The role of these spacetimes in Einstein's gravity (including minimally coupled $p$-forms and non-linear electrodynamics) as non-expanding gravitational waves in an (anti)-de Sitter background is discussed. Furthermore, applications to extended theories such as Gauss-Bonnet, Lovelock, quadratic and $f(R)$ gravity are also briefly illustrated, as well as the overlap of the obtained metrics with universal and almost-universal spacetimes. In the appendices we additionally settle the issue of the redundancy of certain field equations for all Kundt spacetimes in a theory-independent way, and present various alternative coordinates for the spacetimes studied in the paper.

Kerr-Schild double copy for Kundt spacetimes of any dimension

We show that vacuum type N Kundt spacetimes in an arbitrary dimension admit a Kerr-Schild (KS) double copy. This is mostly done in a coordinate-independent way using the higher-dimensional Newman-Penrose formalism. We also discuss two kinds of non-uniqueness of an electromagnetic field corresponding to a given KS metric (i.e., its single copy) - these originate, respectively, from the rescaling freedom in the KS vector and from the non-uniqueness of the splitting of the KS metric in the flat part and the KS part. In connection to this, we show that the subset of KS pp-waves admits both null and non-null electromagnetic single copies. Since vacuum type N Kundt spacetimes are universal solutions of virtually any higher-order gravities and null fields in such backgrounds are immune to higher-order electromagnetic corrections, the KS-Kundt double copy demonstrated in the present paper also applies to large classes of modified theories.

Einstein-Maxwell fields as solutions of higher-order theories

We study four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell fields for which any higher-order corrections to the field equations effectively reduces to just a rescaling of the gravitational and the cosmological constant. These configurations are thus simultaneous solutions of (virtually) any modified theory of gravity coupled (possibly non-minimally) to any electrodynamics. In the case of non-null electromagnetic fields we provide a full characterization of such universal solutions, which correspond to a family of gravitational waves propagating in universes of the Levi-Civita--Bertotti--Robinson type. For null fields we first obtain a set of general necessary conditions, and then a full characterization for a special subfamily, which turns out to represent electromagnetic waves accompanied by pure radiation in the (anti-)Nariai background. The results are exemplified for the case of Born-Infeld, ModMax and Horndeski electrodynamics.

Topological black holes in higher derivative gravity

We study static black holes in quadratic gravity with planar and hyperbolic symmetry and non-extremal horizons. We obtain a solution in terms of an infinite power-series expansion around the horizon, which is characterized by two independent integration constants -- the black hole radius and the strength of the Bach tensor at the horizon. While in Einstein's gravity, such black holes require a negative cosmological constant $Λ$, in quadratic gravity they can exist for any sign of $Λ$ and also for $Λ=0$. Different branches of Schwarzschild-Bach-(A)dS or purely Bachian black holes are identified which admit distinct Einstein limits. Depending on the curvature of the transverse space and the value of $Λ$, these Einstein limits result in (A)dS-Schwarzschild spacetimes with a transverse space of arbitrary curvature (such as black holes and naked singularities) or in Kundt metrics of the (anti-)Nariai type (i.e., dS$_2\times$S$^2$, AdS$_2\times$H$^2$, and flat spacetime). In the special case of toroidal black holes with $Λ=0$, we also discuss how the Bach parameter needs to be fine-tuned to ensure that the metric does not blow up near infinity and instead matches asymptotically a Ricci-flat solution.

Robinson-Trautman spacetimes coupled to conformally invariant electrodynamics in higher dimensions

We summarize recent results on $D$-dimensional Robinson-Trautman solutions of Einstein's gravity in the presence of a conformally invariant non-linear electromagnetic field and a cosmological constant. These spacetimes contain static dyonic black holes with various horizon geometries and their time-dependent radiating generalizations, as well as a class of stealth solutions. Extensions to $f(R)$ and Gauss-Bonnet gravity are mentioned.

Static and radiating dyonic black holes coupled to conformally invariant electrodynamics in higher dimensions

We investigate the complete family of (aligned) Robinson-Trautman spacetimes sourced by conformally invariant non-linear electrodynamics in $D$ dimensions in the presence of an arbitrary cosmological constant. After presenting general features of the solutions (which exist only in even dimensions), we discuss in more detail some particular subclasses. Static metrics contain dyonic black holes with various possible horizon geometries (Kähler if there is a magnetic field, including flat branes) and different asymptotics. In addition, there exist also time-dependent solutions (not possible in the $D>4$ linear theory) which may represent white hole evaporation by emission of electromagnetic radiation (or a time-reversed picture of black hole formation). For those, we comment on a quasi-local characterization of possible past horizons. Finally, we briefly discuss the special case of stealth solutions. In an appendix, a theory-independent result on the redundancy of the gravity part of the field equations for Robinson-Trautman spacetimes is further obtained.

Universal $p$-form black holes in generalized theories of gravity

We explore how far one can go in constructing $d$-dimensional static black holes coupled to $p$-form and scalar fields before actually specifying the gravity and electrodynamics theory one wants to solve. At the same time, we study to what extent one can enlarge the space of black hole solutions by allowing for horizon geometries more general than spaces of constant curvature. We prove that a generalized Schwarzschild-like ansatz with an arbitrary isotropy-irreducible homogeneous base space (IHS) provides an answer to both questions, up to naturally adapting the gauge fields to the spacetime geometry. In particular, an IHS-Kähler base space enables one to construct magnetic and dyonic 2-form solutions in a large class of theories, including non-minimally couplings. We exemplify our results by constructing simple solutions to particular theories such as $R^2$, Gauss-Bonnet and (a sector of) Einstein-Horndeski gravity coupled to certain $p$-form and conformally invariant electrodynamics.

On universal black holes

Recent results of arXiv:1907.08788 on universal black holes in $d$ dimensions are summarized. These are static metrics with an isotropy-irreducible homogeneous base space which can be consistently employed to construct solutions to virtually any metric theory of gravity in vacuum.

Universal Black Holes

We prove that a generalized Schwarzschild-like ansatz can be consistently employed to construct $d$-dimensional static vacuum black hole solutions in any metric theory of gravity for which the Lagrangian is a scalar invariant constructed from the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives of arbitrary order. Namely, we show that, apart from containing two arbitrary functions $a(r)$ and $f(r)$ (essentially, the $g_{tt}$ and $g_{rr}$ components), in any such theory the line-element may admit as a base space {\em any} isotropy-irreducible homogeneous space. Technically, this ensures that the field equations generically reduce to two ODEs for $a(r)$ and $f(r)$, and dramatically enlarges the space of black hole solutions and permitted horizon geometries for the considered theories. We then exemplify our results in concrete contexts by constructing solutions in particular theories such as Gauss-Bonnet, quadratic, $F(R)$ and $F$(Lovelock) gravity, and certain conformal gravities.

Extensions of the generalized hedgehog ansatz for the Einstein-nonlinear $σ$-model system: black holes with NUT, black strings and time-dependent solutions

We consider a class of ansätze for the construction of exact solutions of the Einstein-nonlinear $σ$-model system with an arbitrary cosmological constant in (3+1) dimensions. Exploiting a geometric interplay between the $SU(2)$ field and Killing vectors of the spacetime reduces the matter field equations to a single scalar equation (identically satisfied in some cases) and simultaneously simplifies Einstein's equations. This is then exemplified over various classes of spacetimes, which allows us to construct stationary black holes with a NUT parameter and uniform black strings, as well as time-dependent solutions such as Robinson-Trautman and Kundt spacetimes, Vaidya-type radiating black holes and certain Bianchi~IX cosmologies. In addition to new solutions, some previously known ones are rederived in a more systematic way.

Einstein-Maxwell fields with vanishing higher-order corrections

We obtain a full characterization of Einstein-Maxwell $p$-form solutions $(\boldsymbol{g},\boldsymbol{F})$ in $D$-dimensions for which all higher-order corrections vanish identically. These thus simultaneously solve a large class of Lagrangian theories including both modified gravities and (possibly non-minimally coupled) modified electrodynamics. Specifically, both $\boldsymbol{g}$ and $\boldsymbol{F}$ are fields with vanishing scalar invariants and further satisfy two simple tensorial conditions. They describe a family of gravitational and electromagnetic plane-fronted waves of the Kundt class and of Weyl type III (or more special). The local form of $(\boldsymbol{g},\boldsymbol{F})$ and a few examples are also provided.

Universal electromagnetic fields

We study universal electromagnetic (test) fields, i.e., p-forms fields F that solve simultaneously (virtually) any generalized electrodynamics (containing arbitrary powers and derivatives of F in the field equations) in n spacetime dimensions. One of the main results is a sufficient condition: any null F that solves Maxwell's equations in a Kundt spacetime of aligned Weyl and traceless-Ricci type III is universal (in particular thus providing examples of p-form Galileons on curved Kundt backgrounds). In addition, a few examples in Kundt spacetimes of Weyl type II are presented. Some necessary conditions are also obtained, which are particularly strong in the case n=4=2p: all the scalar invariants of a universal 2-form in four dimensions must be constant, and vanish in the special case of a null F .
