Terahertz Massive MIMO with Holographic Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

We propose a holographic version of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and investigate its application to terahertz (THz) massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. Capitalizing on the miniaturization of THz electronic components, RISs can be implemented by densely packing sub-wavelength unit cells, so as to realize continuous or quasi-continuous apertures and to enable holographic communications. In this paper, in particular, we derive the beam pattern of a holographic RIS. Our analysis reveals that the beam pattern of an ideal holographic RIS can be well approximated by that of an ultra-dense RIS, which has a more practical hardware architecture. In addition, we propose a closed-loop channel estimation (CE) scheme to effectively estimate the broadband channels that characterize THz massive MIMO systems aided by holographic RISs. The proposed CE scheme includes a downlink coarse CE stage and an uplink finer-grained CE stage. The uplink pilot signals are judiciously designed for obtaining good CE performance. Moreover, to reduce the pilot overhead, we introduce a compressive sensing-based CE algorithm, which exploits the dual sparsity of THz MIMO channels in both the angular domain and delay domain. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of holographic RISs over the non-holographic ones, and the effectiveness of the proposed CE scheme.

Analysis and Optimization for RIS-Aided Multi-Pair Communications Relying on Statistical CSI

In this paper, we investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided multi-pair communication system, in which multi-pair users exchange information via an RIS. We derive an approximate expression of the achievable rate by assuming that statistical channel state information (CSI) is available. A genetic algorithm (GA) to solve the rate maximization problem is proposed as well. In particular, we consider implementations of RISs with continuous phase shifts (CPSs) and discrete phase shifts (DPSs). Simulation results verify the correctness of the obtained results and show that the proposed GA method has almost the same performance as the globally optimal solution. In addition, numerical results show that three quantization bits can achieve a large portion of the sum achievable rate for the CPSs setup.

Intelligent Spectrum Learning for Wireless Networks with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has become a promising technology for enhancing the reliability of wireless communications, which is capable of reflecting the desired signals through appropriate phase shifts. However, the intended signals that impinge upon an RIS are often mixed with interfering signals, which are usually dynamic and unknown. In particular, the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) may be degraded by the signals reflected from the RISs that originate from non-intended users. To tackle this issue, we introduce the concept of intelligent spectrum learning (ISL), which uses an appropriately trained convolutional neural network (CNN) at the RIS controller to help the RISs infer the interfering signals directly from the incident signals. By capitalizing on the ISL, a distributed control algorithm is proposed to maximize the received SINR by dynamically configuring the active/inactive binary status of the RIS elements. Simulation results validate the performance improvement offered by deep learning and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed ISL-aided approach.

MIMO Interference Channels Assisted by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Mutual Coupling Aware Sum-Rate Optimization Based on a Mutual Impedance Channel Model

We investigate a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output interference network in the presence of multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). The entire system is described by using a circuit-based model for the transmitters, receivers, and RISs. This is obtained by leveraging the electromagnetic tool of mutual impedances, which accounts for the signal propagation and the mutual coupling among closely-spaced scattering elements. An iterative and provably convergent optimization algorithm that maximizes the sum-rate of RIS-assisted multi-user interference channels is introduced. Numerical results show that the sum-rate is enhanced if the mutual coupling among the elements of the RISs is accounted for at the optimization stage.

Single-RF Multi-User Communication Through Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: An Information-Theoretic Analysis

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are typically used in multi-user systems to mitigate interference among active transmitters. In contrast, this paper studies a setting with a conventional active encoder as well as a passive encoder that modulates the reflection pattern of the RIS. The RIS hence serves the dual purpose of improving the rate of the active encoder and of enabling communication from the second encoder. The capacity region is characterized, and information-theoretic insights regarding the trade-offs between the rates of the two encoders are derived by focusing on the high- and low-power regimes.

Machine Learning-Enabled Joint Antenna Selection and Precoding Design: From Offline Complexity to Online Performance

We investigate the performance of multi-user multiple-antenna downlink systems in which a BS serves multiple users via a shared wireless medium. In order to fully exploit the spatial diversity while minimizing the passive energy consumed by radio frequency (RF) components, the BS is equipped with M RF chains and N antennas, where M < N. Upon receiving pilot sequences to obtain the channel state information, the BS determines the best subset of M antennas for serving the users. We propose a joint antenna selection and precoding design (JASPD) algorithm to maximize the system sum rate subject to a transmit power constraint and QoS requirements. The JASPD overcomes the non-convexity of the formulated problem via a doubly iterative algorithm, in which an inner loop successively optimizes the precoding vectors, followed by an outer loop that tries all valid antenna subsets. Although approaching the (near) global optimality, the JASPD suffers from a combinatorial complexity, which may limit its application in real-time network operations. To overcome this limitation, we propose a learning-based antenna selection and precoding design algorithm (L-ASPA), which employs a DNN to establish underlaying relations between the key system parameters and the selected antennas. The proposed L-ASPD is robust against the number of users and their locations, BS's transmit power, as well as the small-scale channel fading. With a well-trained learning model, it is shown that the L-ASPD significantly outperforms baseline schemes based on the block diagonalization and a learning-assisted solution for broadcasting systems and achieves higher effective sum rate than that of the JASPA under limited processing time. In addition, we observed that the proposed L-ASPD can reduce the computation complexity by 95% while retaining more than 95% of the optimal performance.

Stochastic Learning-Based Robust Beamforming Design for RIS-Aided Millimeter-Wave Systems in the Presence of Random Blockages

A fundamental challenge for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications lies in its sensitivity to the presence of blockages, which impact the connectivity of the communication links and ultimately the reliability of the entire network. In this paper, we analyze a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided mmWave communication system for enhancing the network reliability and connectivity in the presence of random blockages. To enhance the robustness of hybrid analog-digital beamforming in the presence of random blockages, we formulate a stochastic optimization problem based on the minimization of the sum outage probability. To tackle the proposed optimization problem, we introduce a low-complexity algorithm based on the stochastic block gradient descent method, which learns sensible blockage patterns without searching for all combinations of potentially blocked links. Numerical results confirm the performance benefits of the proposed algorithm in terms of outage probability and effective data rate.

Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces: Sum-Rate Optimization Based on Statistical CSI

In this paper, we consider a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system aided by multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) that are deployed to increase the coverage and, possibly, the rank of the channel. We propose an optimization algorithm to configure the IRSs, which is aimed at maximizing the network sum-rate by exploiting only the statistical characterization of the environment, such as the distribution of the locations of the users and the distribution of the multipath channels. As a consequence, the proposed approach does not require the estimation of the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) for system optimization, thus significantly relaxing (or even avoiding) the need of frequently reconfiguring the IRSs, which constitutes one of the most critical issues in IRS-assisted systems. Numerical results confirm the validity of the proposed approach. It is shown, in particular, that IRS-assisted wireless systems that are optimized based on statistical CSI still provide large performance gains as compared to the baseline scenarios in which no IRSs are deployed.

End-to-End Mutual Coupling Aware Communication Model for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: An Electromagnetic-Compliant Approach Based on Mutual Impedances

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are an emerging technology for application to wireless networks. We introduce a physics and electromagnetic (EM) compliant communication model for analyzing and optimizing RIS-assisted wireless systems. The proposed model has four main notable attributes: (i) it is end-to-end, i.e., it is formulated in terms of an equivalent channel that yields a one-to-one mapping between the voltages fed into the ports of a transmitter and the voltages measured at the ports of a receiver; (ii) it is EM-compliant, i.e., it accounts for the generation and propagation of the EM fields; (iii) it is mutual coupling aware, i.e., it accounts for the mutual coupling among the sub-wavelength unit cells of the RIS; and (iv) it is unit cell aware, i.e., it accounts for the intertwinement between the amplitude and phase response of the unit cells of the RIS.

Adaptive Coding and Channel Shaping Through Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: An Information-Theoretic Analysis

A communication link aided by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is studied in which the transmitter can control the state of the RIS via a finite-rate control link. Channel state information (CSI) is acquired at the receiver based on pilot-assisted channel estimation, and it may or may not be shared with the transmitter. Considering quasi-static fading channels with imperfect CSI, capacity-achieving signalling is shown to implement joint encoding of the transmitted signal and of the response of the RIS. This demonstrates the information-theoretic optimality of RIS-based modulation, or "single-RF MIMO" systems. In addition, a novel signalling strategy based on separate layered encoding that enables practical successive cancellation-type decoding at the receiver is proposed. Numerical experiments show that the conventional scheme that fixes the reflection pattern of the RIS, irrespective of the transmitted information, as to maximize the achievable rate is strictly suboptimal, and is outperformed by the proposed adaptive coding strategies at all practical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels.

Mutual Coupling and Unit Cell Aware Optimization for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are an emerging technology for enhancing the performance of wireless networks at a low and affordable cost, complexity, and power consumption. We introduce an algorithm for optimizing a single-input single-output RIS-assisted system in which the RIS is modeled by using an electromagnetic-compliant framework based on mutual impedances. More precisely, we provide the following new contributions: (i) in the absence of mutual coupling among the scattering elements of the RIS, we derive a closed-form expression for the optimal tunable impedances, which inherently accounts for the interplay between the amplitude and phase of the lumped loads of the RIS; and (ii) in the presence of mutual coupling, we introduce an iterative algorithm for optimizing the tunable impedances of the RIS. The algorithm is proved to be convergent by showing that the objective function is non-decreasing and upper bounded. Numerical results reveal that the mutual coupling among the scattering elements of the RIS significantly affects the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) if the inter-distance is less than half of the wavelength. If the RIS is optimized by explicitly taking into account the impact of mutual coupling, a better end-to-end SNR is obtained.

Uplink Achievable Rate Maximization for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Millimeter Wave Systems with Resolution-Adaptive ADCs

In this letter, we investigate the uplink of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-user system. In the considered system, however, problems with hardware cost and power consumption arise when massive antenna arrays coupled with power-demanding analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are employed. To account for practical hardware complexity, we consider that the access point (AP) is equipped with resolution-adaptive analog-to-digital converters (RADCs). We maximize the achievable rate under hardware constraints by jointly optimizing the ADC quantization bits, the RIS phase shifts, and the beam selection matrix. Due to the non-convexity of the feasible set and objective function, the formulated problem is non-convex and difficult to solve. To efficiently tackle this problem, a block coordinated descent (BCD)-based algorithm is proposed. Simulations demonstrate that an RIS can mitigate the hardware loss due to use of RADCs, and that the proposed BCD-based algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms.

MetaSensing: Intelligent Metasurface Assisted RF 3D Sensing by Deep Reinforcement Learning

Using RF signals for wireless sensing has gained increasing attention. However, due to the unwanted multi-path fading in uncontrollable radio environments, the accuracy of RF sensing is limited. Instead of passively adapting to the environment, in this paper, we consider the scenario where an intelligent metasurface is deployed for sensing the existence and locations of 3D objects. By programming its beamformer patterns, the metasurface can provide desirable propagation properties. However, achieving a high sensing accuracy is challenging, since it requires the joint optimization of the beamformer patterns and mapping of the received signals to the sensed outcome. To tackle this challenge, we formulate an optimization problem for minimizing the cross-entropy loss of the sensing outcome, and propose a deep reinforcement learning algorithm to jointly compute the optimal beamformer patterns and the mapping of the received signals. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and show how the sizes of the metasurface and the target space influence the sensing accuracy.

Performance Evaluation and Diversity Analysis of RIS-Assisted Communications Over Generalized Fading Channels in the Presence of Phase Noise

In this paper, we develop a comprehensive theoretical framework for analyzing the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-assisted communication systems over generalized fading channels and in the presence of phase noise. To this end, we propose the Fox's H model as a unified fading distribution for a large number of widely used generalized fading channels. In particular, we derive a unified analytical framework for computing the outage probability and for estimating the achievable diversity order of RIS-aided systems in the presence of phase shifts that either are optimally configured or are impaired by phase noise. The resulting expressions are general, as they hold for an arbitrary number of reflecting elements, and various channel fading and phase noise distributions. As far as the diversity order is concerned, notably, we introduce an asymptotic analytical framework for determining the diversity order in the absence of phase noise, as well as sufficient conditions based on upper bounds and lower bounds for ensuring that RIS-assisted systems achieve the full diversity order in the presence of phase noise. More specifically, if the absolute difference between pairs of phase errors is less than $π/2$, RIS-assisted communications achieve the full diversity order over independent fading channels, even in the presence of phase noise. The theoretical frameworks and findings are validated with the aid of Monte Carlo simulations.

On the Performance of RIS-Assisted Dual-Hop Mixed RF-UWOC Systems

In this paper, we investigate the performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted dual-hop mixed radio-frequency underwater wireless optical communication (RF-UWOC) system. An RIS is an emerging and low-cost technology that aims to enhance the strength of the received signal, thus improving the system performance. In the considered system setup, a ground source does not have a reliable direct link to a given marine buoy and communicates with it through an RIS installed on a building. In particular, the buoy acts as a relay that sends the signal to an underwater destination. In this context, analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP), average bit error rate (ABER), and average channel capacity (ACC) are derived assuming fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocols at the marine buoy. Moreover, asymptotic analyses of the OP and ABER are carried out in order to gain further insights from the analytical frameworks. In particular, the system diversity order is derived and it is shown to depend on the RF link parameters and on the detection schemes of the UWOC link. Finally, it is demonstrated that RIS-assisted systems can effectively improve the performance of mixed dual-hop RF-UWOC systems.

Ergodic Secrecy Rate of RIS-Assisted Communication Systems in the Presence of Discrete Phase Shifts and Multiple Eavesdroppers

This letter investigates the ergodic secrecy rate (ESR) of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication system in the presence of discrete phase shifts and multiple eavesdroppers (Eves). In particular, a closed-form approximation of the ESR is derived for both non-colluding and colluding Eves. The analytical results are shown to be accurate when the number of reflecting elements of the RIS $N$ is large. Asymptotic analysis is provided to investigate the impact of $N$ on the ESR, and it is proved that the ESR scales with $\log_2 N$ for both non-colluding and colluding Eves. Numerical results are provided to verify the analytical results and the obtained scaling laws.

Performance Analysis of Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems: A Stochastic Geometry Approach

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) has emerged as an alternative deployment for conventional cellular massive MIMO networks. Prior works relied on the strong assumption (quite idealized) that the APs are uniformly distributed, and actually, this randomness was considered during the simulation and not in the analysis. However, in practice, ongoing and future networks become denser and increasingly irregular. Having this in mind, we consider that the AP locations are modeled by means of a Poisson point process (PPP) which is a more realistic model for the spatial randomness than a grid or uniform deployment. In particular, by virtue of stochastic geometry tools, we derive both the downlink coverage probability and achievable rate. Notably, this is the only work providing the coverage probability and shedding light on this aspect of CF massive MIMO systems. Focusing on the extraction of interesting insights, we consider small-cells (SCs) as a benchmark for comparison. Among the findings, CF massive MIMO systems achieve both higher coverage and rate with comparison to SCs due to the properties of favorable propagation, channel hardening, and interference suppression. Especially, we showed for both architectures that increasing the AP density results in a higher coverage which saturates after a certain value and increasing the number of users decreases the achievable rate but CF massive MIMO systems take advantage of the aforementioned properties, and thus, outperform SCs. In general, the performance gap between CF massive MIMO systems and SCs is enhanced by increasing the AP density. Another interesting observation concerns that a higher path-loss exponent decreases the rate while the users closer to the APs affect more the performance in terms of the rate.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Aided mmWave NOMA: Joint Power Allocation,Phase Shifts, and Hybrid Beamforming Optimization

In this paper, an reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system is considered. In particular, we consider an RIS-aided mmWave-NOMA downlink system with a hybrid beamforming structure. To maximize the achievable sum-rate under a minimum rate constraint for the users and a minimum transmit power constraint, a joint RIS phase shifts, hybrid beamforming, and power allocation problem is formulated. To solve this non-convex optimization problem, we develop an alternating optimization algorithm. Specifically, first, the non-convex problem is transformed into three subproblems, i.e., power allocation, joint phase shifts and analog beamforming optimization, and digital beamforming design. Then, we solve the power allocation problem under fixed phase shifts of the RIS and hybrid beamforming. Finally, given the power allocation matrix, an alternating manifold optimization (AMO)-based method and a successive convex approximation (SCA)-based method are utilized to design the phase shifts, analog beamforming, and transmit beamforming, respectively. Numerical results reveal that the proposed alternating optimization algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art schemes in terms of sum-rate. Moreover, compared to a conventional mmWave-NOMA system without RIS, the proposed RIS-aided mmWave-NOMA system is capable of improving the achievable sum-rate of the system.
