On some formality criteria for DG-Lie algebras

We give some formality criteria for a differential graded Lie algebra to be formal. For instance, we show that a DG-Lie algebra L is formal if and only if the natural spectral sequence computing the Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology H(L,L) degenerates at second page.

On coisotropic deformations of holomorphic submanifolds

We describe the differential graded Lie algebras governing Poisson deformations of a holomorphic Poisson manifold and coisotropic embedded deformations of a coisotropic holomorphic submanifold. In both cases, under some mild additional assumption, we show that the infinitesimal first order deformations induced by the anchor map are unobstructed. Applications include the analog of Kodaira stability theorem for coisotropic deformation and a generalization of McLean-Voisin's theorem about the local moduli space of lagrangian submanifold. Finally it is shown that our construction is homotopy equivalent to the homotopy Lie algebroid, in the cases where this is defined.

Semiregularity and obstructions of complete intersections

We prove that, on a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, the semiregularity map annihilates every obstruction to embedded deformations of a local complete intersection subvariety with extendable normal bundle. The proof is based on the theory of L-infinity algebras and Tamarkin-Tsigan calculus on the de Rham complex of DG-schemes.

Formality of Koszul brackets and deformations of holomorphic Poisson manifolds

We show that if a generator of a differential Gerstenhaber algebra satisfies certain Cartan-type identities, then the corresponding Lie bracket is formal. Geometric examples include the shifted de Rham complex of a Poisson manifold and the subcomplex of differential forms on a symplectic manifold vanishing on a Lagrangian submanifold, endowed with the Koszul bracket. As a corollary we generalize a recent result by Hitchin on deformations of holomorphic Poisson manifolds.

Semicosimplicial DGLAs in deformation theory

We identify Cech cocycles in nonabelian (formal) group cohomology with Maurer-Cartan elements in a suitable L-infinity algebra. Applications to deformation theory are described.

A relative version of the ordinary perturbation lemma

The perturbation lemma and the homotopy transfer for L-infinity algebras is proved in a elementary way by using a relative version of the ordinary perturbation lemma for chain complexes and the coalgebra perturbation lemma.

An algebraic proof of Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov theorem

We give a completely algebraic proof of the Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov theorem. More precisely, we shall prove that if X is a smooth projective variety with trivial canonical bundle defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, then the L-infinity algebra governing infinitesimal deformations of X is quasi-isomorphic to an abelian differential graded Lie algebra.

A period map for generalized deformations

For every compact Kaehler manifold we give a canonical extension of Griffith's period map to generalized deformations, intended as solutions of Maurer-Cartan equation in the algebra of polyvector fields. Our construction involves the notion of Cartan homotopy and a canonical L-infinity structure on mapping cones of morphisms of differential graded Lie algebras.

L-infinity structures on mapping cones

We show that the mapping cone of a morphism of differential graded Lie algebras $χ\colon L\to M$ can be canonically endowed with an $L_\infty$-algebra structure which at the same time lifts the Lie algebra structure on $L$ and the usual differential on the mapping cone. Moreover, this structure is unique up to isomorphisms of $L_\infty$-algebras. The associated deformation functor coincides with the one introduced by the second author in arXiv:math.AG/0507287.

L-infinity algebras, Cartan homotopies and period maps

We prove that, for every compact Kaehler manifold, the period map of its Kuranishi family is induced by a natural L-infinity morphism. This implies, by standard facts about L-infinity algebras, that the period map is a "morphism of deformation theories" and then commutes with all deformation theoretic constructions (e.g. obstructions).

Lie description of higher obstructions to deforming submanifolds

To every morphism $χ\colon L\to M$ of differential graded Lie algebras we associate a functors of artin rings $\Def_χ$ whose tangent and obstruction spaces are respectively the first and second cohomology group of the cylinder of $χ$. Such construction applies to Hilbert and Brill-Noether functors and allow to prove with ease that every higher obstruction to deforming a smooth submanifold of a Kaehler manifold is annihilated by the semiregularity map.

Lectures on deformations of complex manifolds

This paper is based on a course given by the author at the University of Rome ``La Sapienza'' in the Academic year 2000/2001. The intended aim of the course was to rapidly introduce, although not in an exhaustive way, the non-expert PhD student to deformations of compact complex manifolds, from the very beginning to some recent (i.e. at that time not yet published) results. The goal of these lectures is to give a soft introduction to extended deformation theory. In view of the aim (and the hope) of keeping this paper selfcontained, user friendly and with a tolerating number of pages, we consider only deformations of compact complex manifolds. Anyhow, most part of the formalism and of the results that we prove here will apply to many other deformation problems.

Cohomological constraint to deformations of compact Kaehler manifolds

We prove that for every compact Kähler manifold $X$ there exists an $L$-infinity morphism, lifting the usual cup product in cohomology, from the Kodaira-Spencer differential graded Lie algebra to the suspension of the space of linear endomorphisms of the singular cohomology of $X$. As a consequence we get an algebraic proof of the principle ``obstructions to deformations of compact Kaehler manifolds annihilate ambient cohomology''.

Extended deformation functors

We introduce a precise notion, in terms of few Schlessinger's type conditions, of extended deformation functors which is compatible with most of recent ideas in the Derived Deformation Theory (DDT) program and with geometric examples. With this notion we develop the (extended) analogue of Schlessinger and obstruction theories. The inverse mapping theorem holds for natural transformations of extended deformation functors and all such functors with finite dimensional tangent space are prorepresentable in the homotopy category.

Surfaces of Albanese general type and the Severi Conjecture

In 1932 F. Severi claimed, with an incorrect proof, that every smooth minimal projective surface $S$ such that the bundle $Ω^1_S$ is generically generated by global sections satisfies the topological inequality $2c_1^2(S)\ge c_2(S)$. According to Enriques-Kodaira classification, the above inequality is easily verified when the Kodaira dimension of the surface is $\le 1$, while for surfaces of general type it is still an open problem known as Severi conjecture. In this paper we prove Severi conjecture under the additional mild hypothesis that $S$ has ample canonical bundle. Moreover, under the same assumption, we prove that $2c_1^2(S)=c_2(S)$ if and only if $S$ is a double cover of an abelian surface.
