On Effective Field Theories with Celestial Duals

We show that associativity of the tree-level OPE in a celestial CFT imposes constraints on the coupling constants of the corresponding bulk theory. These constraints are the same as those derived in arXiv:2111.11356 from the Jacobi identity of the algebra of soft modes. The constrained theories are interesting as apparently well-defined celestial CFTs with a deformed $w_{1+\infty}$ symmetry algebra. We explicitly work out the ramifications of these constraints on scattering amplitudes involving gluons, gravitons and scalars in these theories. We find that all four-point amplitudes constructible solely from holomorphic or anti-holomorphic three-point amplitudes vanish on the support of these constraints, which implies that all purely holomorphic or purely anti-holomorphic higher-point amplitudes vanish.

Positive configuration space

We define and study the totally nonnegative part of the Chow quotient of the Grassmannian, or more simply the nonnegative configuration space. This space has a natural stratification by positive Chow cells, and we show that nonnegative configuration space is homeomorphic to a polytope as a stratified space. We establish bijections between positive Chow cells and the following sets: (a) regular subdivisions of the hypersimplex into positroid polytopes, (b) the set of cones in the positive tropical Grassmannian, and (c) the set of cones in the positive Dressian. Our work is motivated by connections to super Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes, which will be discussed in a sequel.

Loop-level gluon OPEs in celestial holography

We compute one-loop corrections to the OPE of gluons in the celestial conformal field theory corresponding to Yang-Mills coupled to arbitrary matter. We exploit universal hard/soft factorization to derive an IR finite OPE for the hard gluon operators. This OPE involves logarithms and operators that resemble logarithmic partners of primary operators. We derive an exact all-loop OPE in a limit of the Higgs-regulated planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory.

Solving Scattering in N=4 Super-Yang-Mills Theory

As part of the Snowmass community planning exercise, we highlight an ongoing program of research into the structure of scattering amplitudes in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory, particularly in the planar limit of a large number of colors. This theory sits at the nexus of a number of exciting topics in high-energy particle physics, including the AdS/CFT correspondence, conformal field theory, integrability, and string theory, and is believed to be exactly solvable in four dimensions. In many ways, planar N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory is the "hydrogen atom" of relativistic scattering: It has proven indispensable for learning about new geometrical formulations of quantum field theory, for exploring mathematical properties at high perturbative orders, and for developing powerful new computational methods that have found applicability in precision collider physics.

Functions Beyond Multiple Polylogarithms for Precision Collider Physics

Feynman diagrams constitute one of the essential ingredients for making precision predictions for collider experiments. Yet, while the simplest Feynman diagrams can be evaluated in terms of multiple polylogarithms -- whose properties as special functions are well understood -- more complex diagrams often involve integrals over complicated algebraic manifolds. Such diagrams already contribute at NNLO to the self-energy of the electron, $t \bar{t}$ production, $γγ$ production, and Higgs decay, and appear at two loops in the planar limit of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. This makes the study of these more complicated types of integrals of phenomenological as well as conceptual importance. In this white paper contribution to the Snowmass community planning exercise, we provide an overview of the state of research on Feynman diagrams that involve special functions beyond multiple polylogarithms, and highlight a number of research directions that constitute essential avenues for future investigation.

Four-point correlators of light-ray operators in CCFT

We compute the four-point correlator of two gluon light-ray operators and two gluon primaries from the four-gluon celestial amplitude in $(2,2)$ signature spacetime. The correlator is non-distributional and allows us to verify that light-ray operators appear in the OPE of two gluon primaries. We also carry out a conformal block decomposition of the terms involving the exchange of gluon operators.

Cluster Superalgebras and Stringy Integrals

We take some initial steps to explore physical applications of the cluster superalgebras recently defined by Ovsienko and Shapiro. Our primary example is a fermionic extension of the $A_2$ cluster algebra, having fifteen cluster supervariables instead of the usual five. We also explore an alternate definition of cluster superalgebras based on the promotion of cluster variables to superfields.

Symbol Alphabets from Tensor Diagrams

We propose to use tensor diagrams and the Fomin-Pylyavskyy conjectures to explore the connection between symbol alphabets of $n$-particle amplitudes in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory and certain polytopes associated to the Grassmannian G(4, $n$). We show how to assign a web (a planar tensor diagram) to each facet of these polytopes. Webs with no inner loops are associated to cluster variables (rational symbol letters). For webs with a single inner loop we propose and explicitly evaluate an associated web series that contains information about algebraic symbol letters. In this manner we reproduce the results of previous analyses of $n \le 8$, and find that the polytope $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(4,9)$ encodes all rational letters, and all square roots of the algebraic letters, of known nine-particle amplitudes.

Symbol Alphabets from Plabic Graphs II: Rational Letters

Symbol alphabets of n-particle amplitudes in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory are known to contain certain cluster variables of Gr(4,n) as well as certain algebraic functions of cluster variables. The first paper arXiv:2007.00646 in this series focused on n=8 algebraic letters. In this paper we show that it is possible to obtain all rational symbol letters (in fact all cluster variables) by solving matrix equations of the form C Z = 0 if one allows C to be an arbitrary cluster parameterization of the top cell of Gr_+(n-4,n).

Symbol Alphabets from Plabic Graphs III: n=9

Symbol alphabets of n-particle amplitudes in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory are known to contain certain cluster variables of Gr(4,n) as well as certain algebraic functions of cluster variables. In this paper we solve the C Z = 0 matrix equations associated to several cells of the totally non-negative Grassmannian, combining methods of arXiv:2012.15812 for rational letters and arXiv:2007.00646 for algebraic letters. We identify sets of parameterizations of the top cell of Gr_+(5,9) for which the solutions produce all of (and only) the cluster variable letters of the 2-loop nine-particle NMHV amplitude, and identify plabic graphs from which all of its algebraic letters originate.

Direct Integration for Multi-leg Amplitudes: Tips, Tricks, and When They Fail

Direct hyperlogarithmic integration offers a strong alternative to differential equation methods for Feynman integration, particularly for multi-particle diagrams. We review a variety of results by the authors in which this method, employed with some care, can compute diagrams of up to eight particles and four loops. We also highlight situations in which this method fails due to an algebraic obstruction. In a large number of cases the obstruction can be associated with a Calabi-Yau manifold.

A Note on One-loop Cluster Adjacency in N = 4 SYM

We study cluster adjacency conjectures for amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We show that the n-point one-loop NMHV ratio function satisfies Steinmann cluster adjacency. We also show that the one-loop BDS-like normalized NMHV amplitude satisfies cluster adjacency between Yangian invariants and final symbol entries up to 9-points. We present conjectures for cluster adjacency properties of Plücker coordinates, quadratic cluster variables, and NMHV Yangian invariants that generalize the notion of weak separation.

Symbol Alphabets from Plabic Graphs

Symbol alphabets of n-particle amplitudes in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory are known to contain certain cluster variables of Gr(4,n) as well as certain algebraic functions of cluster variables. In this paper we suggest an algorithm for computing these symbol alphabets from plabic graphs by solving matrix equations of the form C Z = 0 to associate functions on Gr(m,n) to parameterizations of certain cells of Gr(k,n) indexed by plabic graphs. For m=4 and n=8 we show that this association precisely reproduces the 18 algebraic symbol letters of the two-loop NMHV eight-point amplitude from four plabic graphs.

Non-perturbative geometries for planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM amplitudes

There is a remarkable well-known connection between the G$(4,n)$ cluster algebra and $n$-particle amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. For $n \ge 8$ two long-standing open questions have been to find a mathematically natural way to identify a finite list of amplitude symbol letters from among the infinitely many cluster variables, and to find an explanation for certain algebraic functions, such as the square roots of four-mass-box type, that are expected to appear in symbols but are not cluster variables. In this letter we use the notion of "stringy canonical forms" to construct polytopal realizations of certain compactifications of (the positive part of) the configuration space Conf${}_n(\mathbb{P}^{k-1}) \cong {\rm G}(k,n)/T$ that are manifestly finite for all $k$ and $n$. Some facets of these polytopes are naturally associated to cluster variables, while others are naturally associated to algebraic functions constructed from Lusztig's canonical basis. For $(k,n) = (4,8)$ the latter include precisely the expected square roots, revealing them to be related to certain "overpositive" functions of the kinematical invariants.

Weak Separation, Positivity and Extremal Yangian Invariants

We classify all positive n-particle N^kMHV Yangian invariants in N=4 Yang-Mills theory with n=5k, which we call extremal because none exist for n>5k. We show that this problem is equivalent to that of enumerating plane cactus graphs with k pentagons. We use the known solution of that problem to provide an exact expression for the number of cyclic classes of such invariants for any k, and a simple rule for writing them down explicitly. As a byproduct, we provide an alternative (but equivalent) classification by showing that a product of k five-brackets with disjoint sets of indices is a positive Yangian invariant if and only if the sets are all weakly separated.

Yangian Invariants and Cluster Adjacency in N=4 Yang-Mills

We conjecture that every rational Yangian invariant in N=4 SYM theory satisfies a recently introduced notion of cluster adjacency. We provide evidence for this conjecture by using the Sklyanin Poisson bracket on Gr(4,n) to check numerous examples.

Cluster Adjacency for m=2 Yangian Invariants

We classify the rational Yangian invariants of the $m=2$ toy model of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory in terms of generalised triangles inside the amplituhedron $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}^{(2)}$. We enumerate and provide an explicit formula for all invariants for any number of particles $n$ and any helicity degree $k$. Each invariant manifestly satisfies cluster adjacency with respect to the $Gr(2,n)$ cluster algebra.
