$\mathbb{Z}^r$-graded rings and their canonical modules

In ``Cohen--Macaulay rings'' Bruns and Herzog define the graded canonical module for $\mathbb{Z}^r$-graded rings. We generalize the definition to multigradings and prove that the canonical module ``localizes''. As an application, we give a divisorial proof of the theorem of Danilov and Stanley on the canonical module of affine normal monoid rings. Along the way, we develop the basic theory of multigraded rings and modules.

The minimal cellular resolutions of the edge ideals of forests

We present an explicit construction of a minimal cellular resolution for the edge ideals of forests, based on discrete Morse theory. In particular, the generators of the free modules are subsets of the generators of the modules in the Lyubeznik resolution. This procedure allows to ease the computation of the graded Betti numbers and the projective dimension.

On determinantal ideals and algebraic dependence

Let $X$ be a matrix with entries in a polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field $K$. We prove that, if the entries of $X$ outside some $(t \times t)$-submatrix are algebraically dependent over $K$, the arithmetical rank of the ideal $I_t(X)$ of $t$-minors of $X$ drops at least by one with respect to the generic case; under suitable assumptions, it drops at least by $k$ if $X$ has $k$ zero entries. This upper bound turns out to be sharp if $\mathrm{char}\, K=0$, since it then coincides with the lower bound provided by the local cohomological dimension.

The arithmetical rank of the edge ideals of cactus graphs

We prove that, for the edge ideal of a cactus graph, the arithmetical rank is bounded above by the sum of the number of cycles and the maximum height of its associated primes. The bound is sharp, but in many cases it can be improved. Moreover, we show that the edge ideal of a Cohen-Macaulay graph that contains exactly one cycle or is chordal or has no cycles of length 4 and 5 is a set-theoretic complete intersection.

On empty lattice simplices in dimension 4

We give an almost complete classification of empty lattice simplices in dimension 4 using the conjectural results of Mori-Morrison-Morrison, later proved by Sankaran and Bober. In particular, all of these simplices correspond to cyclic quotient singularities, and all but finitely many of them have width bounded by 2.

Arithmetical ranks of Stanley-Reisner ideals of simplicial complexes with a cone

When a cone is added to a simplicial complex $Δ$ over one of its faces, we investigate the relation between the arithmetical ranks of the Stanley-Reisner ideals of the original simplicial complex and the new simplicial complex $Δ'$. In particular, we show that the arithmetical rank of the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $Δ'$ equals the projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ring of $Δ'$ if the corresponding equality holds for $Δ$.

On the arithmetical rank of a special class of minimal varieties

We study the arithmetical ranks and the cohomological dimensions of an infinite class of Cohen-Macaulay varieties of minimal degree. Among these we find, on the one hand, infinitely many set-theoretic complete intersections, on the other hand examples where the arithmetical rank is arbitrarily greater than the codimension.

On binomial set-theoretic complete intersections in characteristic p

Using aritmethic conditions on affine semigroups we prove that for a simplicial toric variety of codimension 2 the property of being a set-theoretic complete intersection on binomials in characteristic $p$ holds either for all primes $p$, or for no prime $p$, or for exactly one prime $p$.

On simplicial toric varieties of codimension 2

We describe classes of toric varieties of codimension 2 which are either minimally defined by 3 binomial equations over any algebraically closed field, or are set-theoretic complete intersections in exactly one positive characteristic.

Factorials as sums

In this paper we give an additive representation of the factorial, which can be proven by a simple quick analytical argument. We also present some generalizations, which are linked, on the one hand to an arithmetical theorem proven by Euler (decomposition of primes as the sum of two squares), and, on the other hand, to modern combinatorics (Stirling numbers).
