On binomial equations defining rational normal scrolls

We show that a rational normal scroll can in general be set-theoretically defined by a proper subset of the 2-minors of the associated two-row matrix. This allows us to find a class of rational normal scrolls that are almost set-theoretic complete intersections.

On a special class of simplicial toric varieties

We show that for all $n\geq 3$ and all primes $p$ there are infinitely many simplicial toric varieties of codimension $n$ in the $2n$-dimensional affine space whose minimum number of defining equations is equal to $n$ in characteristic $p$, and lies between $2n-2$ and $2n$ in all other characteristics. In particular, these are new examples of varieties which are set-theoretic complete intersections only in one positive characteristic.\newline Moreover, we show that the minimum number of binomial equations which define these varieties in all characteristics is 4 for $n=3$ and $2n-2+{n-2\choose 2}$ whenever $n\geq 4$.

A note on monomial ideals

We show that the number of elements generating a squarefree monomial ideal up to radical can always be bounded above in terms of the number of its minimal monomial generators and the maximal height of its minimal primes.

Determinantal ideals and monomial curves in the three-dimensional space

We show that the defining ideal of every monomial curve in the affine or projective three-dimensional space can be set-theoretically defined by three binomial equations, two of which set-theoretically define a determinantal ideal generated by the 2-minors of a $2\times 3$ matrix with monomial entries.

Polarizations and differential calculus in affine spaces

Within the framework of mappings between affine spaces, the notion of $n$-th polarization of a function will lead to an intrinsic characterization of polynomial functions. We prove that the characteristic features of derivations, such as linearity, iterability, Leibniz and chain rules, are shared -- at the finite level -- by the polarization operators. We give these results by means of explicit general formulae, which are valid at any order $n$, and are based on combinatorial identities. The infinitesimal limits of the $n$-th polarizations of a function will yield its $n$-th derivatives (without resorting to the usual recursive definition), and the above mentioned properties will be recovered directly in the limit. Polynomial functions will allow us to produce a coordinate free version of Taylor's formula.

Certain minimal varieties are set-theoretic complete intersections

We present a class of homogeneous ideals which are generated by monomials and binomials of degree two and are set-theoretic complete intersections. This class includes certain reducible varieties of minimal degree and, in particular, the presentation ideals of the fiber cone algebras of monomial varieties of codimension two.

Effective construction of irreducible curve singularities

We can associate with any irreducible curve singularity (ics) a numerical semigroup. Two ics are said to be equisingular if they have the same semigroup. Two equisingular ics have the same Milnor number. Conversely, The set of ics with a given Milnor number is a union of equisingular classes. Here we study ics from an algorithmic viewpoint, by using the notion of approximate roots. We give two algorithms: the first one constructs the canonical equation of a curve with a given semigroup. The second one gives the set of semigroups with a fixed Milnor number. The paper is backed by Maple and Mathematica programs which are available upon request.

A note on Veronese varieties

We show that for every prime $p$, there is a class of Veronese varieties which are set-theoretic complete intersections if and only if the ground field has characteristic $p$.
