Gradual eigenvector ergodization in coupled Ginibre matrices

Non-Hermitian random matrices provide a useful framework for understanding universal characteristics of dissipative quantum chaotic systems with loss or gain. We consider a model of two such systems represented by two independent $N\times N$ complex Ginibre matrices interacting via a deterministic matrix $c{\bf 1}_N$, where $c$ is the complex coupling parameter whose magnitude $|c|$ controls the interaction strength. We characterize quantitatively how the eigenvectors of the whole system, initially localized in one of the individual subsystems for $|c|=0$, eventually spread over the full system with growing interaction strength. The resulting asymptotic formula describing such spread in the limit $N\to \infty$ is very explicit and provides a full picture of the gradual ergodization of eigenvectors as a function of the coupling parameter $|c|$ in the whole transition regime. As a by-product of our method we also compute the mean eigenvalue density for our model at the origin of the spectral bulk $z=0$ in the fully ergodic regime, when the coupling is scaled with the matrix size as $c=\sqrt{N}\tilde{c}$. We find that as $N\to \infty$ the limiting density at the origin vanishes beyond the critical value $|\tilde{c}|=1.$ This is compatible with the expected split of the density support in the complex plane into two disjoint domains.

Asymptotic long-range order for the XY-model on random geometric graphs

We study the classical $XY$-model on random geometric graphs $\mathcal{G}_{n, \varepsilon}$, which are obtained by sampling $n \in \mathbb{N}$ independent points in a finite domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 2$, and connecting two points by and edge if their distance is of order $\varepsilon > 0$. We refer to $\mathcal{G}_{n, \varepsilon}$ as the random environment. Letting $\varepsilon \to 0$ as $n \to \infty$ at a sufficiently slow rate, these graphs capture the geometry of $Ω$. Denoting the inverse temperature by $β$, we show that in the limit $β\to \infty$ at a rate depending on $n$ and $\varepsilon$, the $XY$-model on $\mathcal{G}_{n, \varepsilon}$ exhibits long range order in the sense that we prove a lower bound away from zero on the two-point function. Our result is quenched in the random environment: long-range order holds with large probability, converging to one as $n \to \infty$. To prove the statement, we show that with high probability the environment is sufficiently regular to apply a convexity argument and the Brascamp--Lieb inequality.

Exponential decay of correlations at high temperature in $H^{2|2n}$ nonlinear sigma models

We consider a family of nonlinear sigma models on $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ whose target space is the hyperbolic super manifold $H^{2|2n}$, $n >1$, introduced by Crawford as an extension of Zirnbauer's $H^{2|2}$ model for disordered systems. We prove exponential decay of the two-point correlation function in the high-temperature regime $β\leq C n^{-1}$, with $C>0$ a universal constant, for any $n>1$ and any dimension $d\geq 1$, with mass $\log β^{-1}$. We also consider models with long-range interaction and prove fast decay in the same high-temperature regime. The proof is based on the reduction to a marginal fermionic theory and combines a high-temperature cluster expansion, exact combinatorics and bounds derived via Grassmann norms.

Phase transition in the Integrated Density of States of the Anderson model arising from a supersymmetric sigma model

We study the Integrated Density of States (IDS) of the random Schrödinger operator appearing in the study of certain reinforced random processes in connection with a supersymmetric sigma-model. We rely on previous results on the supersymmetric sigma-model to obtain lower and upper bounds on the asymptotic behavior of the IDS near the bottom of the spectrum in all dimension. We show a phase transition for the IDS between weak and strong disorder regime in dimension larger or equal to three, that follows from a phase transition in the corresponding random process and supersymmetric sigma-model. In particular, we show that the IDS does not exhibit Lifshitz tails in the strong disorder regime, confirming a recent conjecture. This is in stark contrast with other disordered systems, like the Anderson model. A Wegner type estimate is also derived, giving an upper bound on the IDS and showing the regularity of the function.

Restrictions of some reinforced processes to subgraphs

We prove that the restriction of the vertex-reinforced jump process to a subset of the vertex set is a mixture of vertex-reinforced jump processes. A similar statement holds for the non-linear hyperbolic supersymmetric sigma model. This is then applied to vertex-reinforced jump processes on subdivided versions of graphs of bounded degree, where every edge is replaced by a finite sequence of edges. We prove that discrete-time processes associated to suitable corresponding restrictions are mixtures of positive recurrent Markov chains. We also deduce a similar statement for edge-reinforced random walks.

Fluctuations in the non-linear supersymmetric hyperbolic sigma model with long-range interactions

We consider a class of non-linear supersymmetric hyperbolic sigma models with long-range interactions on boxes in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and on a hierarchical lattice. We prove that the random field associated to a marginal in horospherical coordinates has asymptotically arbitrarily small fluctuations for large enough interactions, uniformly in the size of the boxes. This can be viewed as a strong version of spontaneous breaking of the Lorentz boost symmetry.

Transience of vertex-reinforced jump processes with long-range jumps

We show that the vertex-reinforced jump process on the $d$-dimensional lattice with long-range jumps is transient in any dimension $d$ as long as the initial weights do not decay too fast. The main ingredients in the proof are: an analysis of the corresponding random environment on finite boxes, a comparison with a hierarchical model, and the reduction of the hierarchical model to a non-homogeneous effective one-dimensional model. For $d\ge 3$ we also prove transience of the vertex-reinforced jump process with possibly long-range jumps as long as nearest-neighbor weights are large enough.

Decay of the Green's function of the fractional Anderson model and connection to long-range SAW

We prove a connection between the Green's function of the fractional Anderson model and the two point function of a self-avoiding random walk with long range jumps, adapting a strategy proposed by Schenker in 2015. This connection allows us to exploit results from the theory of self-avoiding random walks to improve previous bounds known for the fractional Anderson model at strong disorder. In particular, we enlarge the range of the disorder parameter where spectral localization occurs. Moreover we prove that the decay of Green's function at strong disorder for any $0<α<1$ is arbitrarily close to the decay of the massive resolvent of the corresponding fractional Laplacian, in agreement with the case of the standard Anderson model $α=1$. We also derive upper and lower bounds for the resolvent of the discrete fractional Laplacian with arbitrary mass $m\geq 0,$ that are of independent interest.

The non-linear supersymmetric hyperbolic sigma model on a complete graph with hierarchical interactions

We study the non-linear supersymmetric hyperbolic sigma model $H^{2|2}$ on a complete graph with hierarchical interactions. For interactions which do not decrease too fast in the hierarchical distance, we prove tightness of certain spin variables in horospherical coordinates, uniformly in the pinning and in the size of the graph. The proof relies on a reduction to an effective $H^{2|2}$ model; its size is logarithmic in the size of the original model.

Supersymmetric Polar Coordinates with applications to the Lloyd model

Spectral properties of random Schrödinger operators are encoded in the average of products of Greens functions. For probability distributions with enough finite moments, the supersymmetric approach offers a useful dual representation. Here we use supersymmetric polar coordinates to derive a dual representation that holds for general distributions. We apply this result to study the density of states of the linearly correlated Lloyd model. In the case of non-negative correlation, we recover the well-known exact formula. In the case of linear small negative interaction localized around one point, we show that the density of states is well approximated by the exact formula. Our results hold on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ uniformly in the volume.

The density of states of 1D random band matrices via a supersymmetric transfer operator

Recently, T. and M. Shcherbina proved a pointwise semicircle law for the density of states of one-dimensional Gaussian band matrices of large bandwidth. The main step of their proof is a new method to study the spectral properties of non-self-adjoint operators in the semiclassical regime. The method is applied to a transfer operator constructed from the supersymmetric integral representation for the density of states. We present a simpler proof of a slightly upgraded version of the semicircle law, which requires only standard semiclassical arguments and some peculiar elementary computations. The simplification is due to the use of supersymmetry, which manifests itself in the commutation between the transfer operator and a family of transformations of superspace, and was applied earlier in the context of band matrices by Constantinescu. Other versions of this supersymmetry have been a crucial ingredient in the study of the localization--delocalization transition by theoretical physicists.

Plate-nematic phase in three dimensions

We consider a system of anisotropic plates in the three-dimensional continuum, interacting via purely hard core interactions. We assume that the particles have a finite number of allowed orientations. In a suitable range of densities, we prove the existence of a uni-axial nematic phase, characterized by long range orientational order (the minor axes are aligned parallel to each other, while the major axes are not) and no translational order. The proof is based on a coarse graining procedure, which allows us to map the plate model into a contour model, and in a rigorous control of the resulting contour theory, via Pirogov-Sinai methods.

Martingales and some generalizations arising from the supersymmetric hyperbolic sigma model

We introduce a family of real random variables $(β,θ)$ arising from the supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model and containing the family $β$ introduced by Sabot, Tarrès, and Zeng [STZ17] in the context of the vertex-reinforced jump process. Using this family we construct an exponential martingale generalizing the one considered in [DMR17]. Moreover, using the full supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model we also construct a generalization of the exponential martingale involving Grassmann variables.

Density of States for Random Band Matrices in two dimensions

We consider a two dimensional random band matrix ensemble, in the limit of infinite volume and fixed but large band width $W$. For this model we rigorously prove smoothness of the averaged density of states. We also prove that the resulting expression coincides with Wigner's semicircle law with a precision $W^{-2+δ},$ where $δ\to 0$ when $W\to \infty.$ The proof uses the supersymmetric approach and extends results by Disertori, Pinson and Spencer from three to two dimensions.

A supersymmetric approach to martingales related to the vertex-reinforced jump process

Sabot and Zeng have discovered two martingales, one of which played a key role in their investigation of the vertex-reinforced jump process. Starting from the related supersymmetric hyperbolic sigma model, we give an alternative derivation of these two martingales. They turn out to be the first two instances in an infinite hierarchy of martingales, derived from a generating function.

A comparison of the nonlinear sigma model with general pinning and pinning at one point

We study the nonlinear supersymmetric hyperbolic sigma model introduced by Zirnbauer in 1991. This model can be related to the mixing measure of a vertex- reinforced jump process. We prove that the two-point correlation function has a probabilistic interpretation in terms of connectivity in rooted random spanning forests. Using this interpretation, we dominate the two-point correlation function for general pinning, e.g. for uniform pinning, with the corresponding correlation function with pinning at one point. The result holds for a general finite graph, asymptotically as the strength of the pinning converges to zero. Specializing this to general ladder graphs, we deduce in the same asymptotic regime exponential decay of correlations for general pinning.

Semi-classical analysis of non self-adjoint transfer matrices in statistical mechanics. I

We propose a way to study one-dimensional statistical mechanics models with complex-valued action using transfer operators. The argument consists of two steps. First, the contour of integration is deformed so that the associated transfer operator is a perturbation of a normal one. Then the transfer operator is studied using methods of semi-classical analysis. In this paper we concentrate on the second step, the main technical result being a semi-classical estimate for powers of an integral operator which is approximately normal.

Transience of Edge-Reinforced Random Walk

We show transience of the edge-reinforced random walk (ERRW) for small reinforcement in dimension d greater than 2. This proves the existence of a phase transition between recurrent and transient behavior, thus solving an open problem stated by Diaconis in 1986. The argument adapts the proof of quasi-diffusive behavior of the SuSy hyperbolic model for fixed conductances by Disertori, Spencer and Zirnbauer [CMP 2010], using the representation of ERRW as a mixture of vertex-reinforced jump processes (VRJP) with independent gamma conductances, and the interpretation of the limit law of VRJP as a supersymmetric (SuSy) hyperbolic sigma model developed by Sabot and Tarrès in [JEMS 2014].
