Full decoherence induced by local fields in open spin chains with strong boundary couplings

We investigate an open $XYZ$ spin $1/2$ chain driven out of equilibrium by boundary reservoirs targeting different spin orientations, aligned along the principal axes of anisotropy. We show that by tuning local magnetic fields, applied to spins at sites near the boundaries, one can change any nonequilibrium steady state to a fully uncorrelated Gibbsian state at infinite temperature. This phenomenon occurs for strong boundary coupling and on a critical manifold in the space of the fields amplitudes. The structure of this manifold depends on the anisotropy degree of the model and on the parity of the chain size.

Anomalous currents in driven XXZ chain with boundary twisting at weak coupling or weak driving

The spin 1/2 XXZ chain driven out of equilibrium by coupling with boundary reservoirs targeting perpendicular spin orientations in XY plane, is investigated. The existence of an anomaly in the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) at the isotropic point $Δ=1$ is demonstrated both in the weak coupling and weak driving limits. The nature of the anomaly is studied analytically by calculating exact NESS for small system sizes, and investigating steady currents. The spin current at the points $Δ=\pm1$ has a singularity which leads to a current discontinuity when either driving or coupling vanish, and the current of energy develops a twin peak anomaly. The character of singularity is shown to depend qualitatively on whether the system size is even or odd.

Optimal transport and von Neumann entropy in an Heisenberg XXZ chain out of equilibrium

In this paper we investigate the spin currents and the von Neumann entropy (VNE) of an Heisenberg XXZ chain in contact with twisted XY-boundary magnetic reservoirs by means of the Lindblad master equation. Exact solutions for the stationary reduced density matrix are explicitly constructed for chains of small sizes by using a quantum symmetry operation of the system. These solutions are then used to investigate the optimal transport in the chain in terms of the VNE. As a result we show that the maximal spin current always occurs in the proximity of extrema of the VNE and for particular choices of parameters (coupling with reservoirs and anisotropy) it can exactly coincide with them. In the limit of strong coupling we show that minima of the VNE tend to zero, meaning that the maximal transport is achieved in this case with states that are very close to pure states.

Displaced dynamics of binary mixtures in linear and nonlinear optical lattices

The dynamical behavior of matter wave solitons of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in combined linear and nonlinear optical lattices (OLs) is investigated. In particular, the dependence of the frequency of the oscillating dynamics resulting from initially slightly displaced components is investigated both analytically, by means of a variational effective potential approach for the reduced collective coordinate dynamics of the soliton, and numerically, by direct integrations of the mean field equations of the BEC mixture. We show that for small initial displacements binary solitons can be viewed as point masses connected by elastic springs of strengths related to the amplitude of the OL and to the intra and inter-species interactions. Analytical expressions of symmetric and anti-symmetric mode frequencies, are derived and occurrence of beatings phenomena in the displaced dynamics is predicted. These expressions are shown to give a very good estimation of the oscillation frequencies for different values of the intra-species interatomic scattering length, as confirmed by direct numerical integrations of the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPE) of the mixture. The possibility to use displaced dynamics for indirect measurements of BEC mixture characteristics such as number of atoms and interatomic interactions is also suggested.

Reduced density matrix and entanglement entropy of permutationally invariant quantum many-body systems

In this paper we discuss the properties of the reduced density matrix of quantum many body systems with permutational symmetry and present basic quantification of the entanglement in terms of the von Neumann (VNE), Renyi and Tsallis entropies. In particular, we show, on the specific example of the spin $1/2$ Heisenberg model, how the RDM acquires a block diagonal form with respect to the quantum number $k$ fixing the polarization in the subsystem conservation of $S_{z}$ and with respect to the irreducible representations of the $\mathbf{S_{n}}$ group. Analytical expression for the RDM elements and for the RDM spectrum are derived for states of arbitrary permutational symmetry and for arbitrary polarizations. The temperature dependence and scaling of the VNE across a finite temperature phase transition is discussed and the RDM moments and the Rényi and Tsallis entropies calculated both for symmetric ground states of the Heisenberg chain and for maximally mixed states.

Linear superpositions of gap solitons in periodic Kerr media

The existence of a novel type of solitons in periodic Kerr media constructed as superposition of noninteracting gap-solitons of different kinds (bright, dark and periodic) is first demonstrated. The periodic modulation of the nonlinearity is used to suppress the cross phase modulation between components to allow the superimposed beam to propagate for long distances.

Resonant scattering of matter wave gap-solitons by optical lattice defects

The physical mechanism underlying scattering properties of matter wave gap-solitons by linear optical lattice defects is investigated. The occurrence of repeated reflection, transmission and trapping regions for increasing strengths of an optical lattice defect are shown to be due to impurity modes inside the defect potential with chemical potentials and numbers of atoms matching corresponding quantities of an incoming gap-soliton. For gap-solitons with chemical potentials very close to band edges, the number of resonances observed in the scattering coincides with the number of bound states which can exist in the defect potential for the given defect strength. The dependence of the positions and widths of the transmission resonant on the incoming gap-soliton velocities are investigated by means of a defect mode analysis and effective mass theory. The comparisons with direct integrations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation provide a very good agreement confirming the correctness of our interpretation. The possibility of multiple resonant transmission through arrays of optical lattice defects is also demonstrated. In particular, we show that it is possible to design the strength of the defects so to balance the velocity detunings and to allow the resonant transmission through a larger number of defects. The possibility of using these results for very precise gap-soliton dynamical filters is suggested.

Hierarchy of boundary driven phase transitions in multi-species particle systems

Interacting systems with $K$ driven particle species on a open chain or chains which are coupled at the ends to boundary reservoirs with fixed particle densities are considered. We classify discontinuous and continuous phase transitions which are driven by adiabatic change of boundary conditions. We build minimal paths along which any given boundary driven phase transition (BDPT) is observed and reveal kinetic mechanisms governing these transitions. Combining minimal paths, we can drive the system from a stationary state with all positive characteristic speeds to a state with all negative characteristic speeds, by means of adiabatic changes of the boundary conditions. We show that along such composite paths one generically encounters $Z$ discontinuous and $2(K-Z)$ continuous BDPTs with $Z$ taking values $0\leq Z\leq K$ depending on the path. As model examples we consider solvable exclusion processes with product measure states and $K=1,2,3$ particle species and a non-solvable two-way traffic model. Our findings are confirmed by numerical integration of hydrodynamic limit equations and by Monte Carlo simulations. Results extend straightforwardly to a wide class of driven diffusive systems with several conserved particle species.

Reduced density matrix of permutational invariant many-body systems

We consider density matrices which are sums of projectors on states spanning irreducible representations of the permutation group of L sites (eigenstates of permutational invariant quantum system with L sites) and construct the reduced density matrix (RDM) for blocks of size n<L by tracing out L-n sites, viewed as environment. Explicit analytic expressions of the elements of the RDM are given in the natural basis and the corresponding spectrum is derived. Results apply to all quantum many-body systems with permutational symmetry for which the mean field theory is exact.

Long lived matter waves Bloch oscillations and dynamical localization by time dependent nonlinearity management

We introduce a new method to achieve long lived Bloch oscillations and dynamical localization of matter wave gap solitons in optical lattices. The method is based on time dependent modulations of the nonlinearity which can be experimentally implemented by means of the Feshbach resonance technique. In particular, we show that the width of the wave packet is preserved if time modulations of the nonlinearity are taken proportional to the curvature of the linear band spectrum which for most typical experimental settings are well approximated by harmonic time modulations of proper frequencies.

Atomic Josephson junction with two bosonic species

We study an atomic Josephson junction (AJJ) in presence of two interacting Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in a double well trap. We assume that bosons of different species interact with each other. The macroscopic wave functions of the two components obey to a system of two 3D coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPE). We write the Lagrangian of the system, and from this we derive a system of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODE), for which the coupled pendula represent the mechanic analogous. These differential equations control the dynamical behavior of the fractional imbalance and of the relative phase of each bosonic component. We perform the stability analysis around the points which preserve the symmetry and get an analytical formula for the oscillation frequency around the stable points. Such a formula could be used as an indirect measure of the inter-species s-wave scattering length. We also study the oscillations of each fractional imbalance around zero and non zero - the macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) - time averaged values. For different values of the inter-species interaction amplitude, we carry out this study both by directly solving the two GPE and by solving the corresponding coupled pendula equations. We show that, under certain conditions, the predictions of these two approaches are in good agreement. Moreover, we calculate the crossover value of the inter-species interaction amplitude which signs the onset of MQST.

Asymmetric simple exclusion process with periodic boundary driving

We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a semi-infinite chain which is coupled at the end to a reservoir with a particle density that changes periodically in time. It is shown that the density profile assumes a time-periodic sawtooth-like shape. This shape does not depend on initial conditions and is found analytically in the hydrodynamic limit. In a finite system, the stationary state is shown to be governed by effective boundary densities and the extremal flux principle. Effective boundary densities are determined numerically via Monte Carlo simulations and compared with those given by mean field approach and numerical integration of the hydrodynamic limit equation which is the Burgers equation. Our results extend straightforwardly beyond the ASEP to a wide class of driven diffusive systems with one conserved particle species.

Scaling of the von Neumann entropy across a finite temperature phase transition

The spectrum of the reduced density matrix and the temperature dependence of the von Neumann entropy (VNE) are analytically obtained for a system of hard core bosons on a complete graph which exhibits a phase transition to a Bose-Einstein condensate at $T=T_c$. It is demonstrated that the VNE undergoes a crossover from purely logarithmic at T=0 to purely linear in block size $n$ behaviour for $T\geq T_{c}$. For intermediate temperatures, VNE is a sum of two contributions which are identified as the classical (Gibbs) and the quantum (due to entanglement) parts of the von Neumann entropy.

Solitons in strongly driven discrete nonlinear Schrödinger-type models

Discrete solitons in the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) and discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations with damping and strong rapid drive are investigated. The averaged equations have the forms of the parametric AL and DNLS equations. A new type of parametric bright discrete soliton and cnoidal waves are found and the stability properties are analyzed. The analytical predictions of the perturbed inverse scattering transform are confirmed by the numerical simulations of the AL and DNLS equations with rapidly varying drive and damping.

Matter-wave solitons in radially periodic potentials

We investigate two-dimensional (2D) states of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) with self-attraction or self-repulsion, trapped in an axially symmetric optical-lattice potential periodic along the radius. Unlike previously studied 2D models with Bessel lattices, no localized states exist in the linear limit of the present model, hence all localized states are truly nonlinear ones. We consider the states trapped in the central potential well, and in remote circular troughs. In both cases, a new species, in the form of \textit{radial gap solitons}, are found in the repulsive model (the gap soliton trapped in a circular trough may additionally support stable dark-soliton pairs). In remote troughs, stable localized states may assume a ring-like shape, or shrink into strongly localized solitons. The existence of stable annular states, both azimuthally uniform and weakly modulated ones, is corroborated by simulations of the corresponding Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Dynamics of strongly localized solitons circulating in the troughs is also studied. While the solitons with sufficiently small velocities are stable, fast solitons gradually decay, due to the leakage of matter into the adjacent trough under the action of the centrifugal force. Collisions between solitons are investigated too. Head-on collisions of in-phase solitons lead to the collapse; $π$-out of phase solitons bounce many times, but eventually merge into a single soliton without collapsing. The proposed setting may also be realized in terms of spatial solitons in photonic-crystal fibers with a radial structure.

Discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations with arbitrarily high order nonlinearities

A class of discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equations with arbitrarily high order nonlinearities is introduced. These equations are derived from the same Hamiltonian using different Poisson brackets and include as particular cases the saturable discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation and the Ablowitz-Ladik equation. As a common property, these equations possess three kinds of exact analytical stationary solutions for which the Peierls-Nabarro barrier is zero. Several properties of these solutions, including stability, discrete breathers and moving solutions, are investigated.

Discrete soliton ratchets driven by biharmonic fields

Directed motion of topological solitons (kinks or antikinks) in the damped and AC-driven discrete sine-Gordon system is investigated. We show that if the driving field breaks certain time-space symmetries, the soliton can perform unidirectional motion. The phenomenon resembles the well known effects of ratchet transport and nonlinear harmonic mixing. Direction of the motion and its velocity depends on the shape of the AC drive. Necessary conditions for the occurrence of the effect are formulated. In comparison with the previously studied continuum case, the discrete case shows a number of new features: non-zero depinning threshold for the driving amplitude, locking to the rational fractions of the driving frequency, and diffusive ratchet motion in the case of weak intersite coupling.

Multidimensional semi-gap solitons in a periodic potential

The existence, stability and other dynamical properties of a new type of multi-dimensional (2D or 3D) solitons supported by a transverse low-dimensional (1D or 2D, respectively) periodic potential in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the self-defocusing cubic nonlinearity are studied. The equation describes propagation of light in a medium with normal group-velocity dispersion (GVD). Strictly speaking, solitons cannot exist in the model, as its spectrum does not support a true bandgap. Nevertheless, the variational approximation (VA) and numerical computations reveal stable solutions that seem as completely localized ones, an explanation to which is given. The solutions are of the gap-soliton type in the transverse direction(s), in which the periodic potential acts in combination with the diffraction and self-defocusing nonlinearity. Simultaneously, in the longitudinal (temporal) direction these are ordinary solitons, supported by the balance of the normal GVD and defocusing nonlinearity. Stability of the solitons is predicted by the VA, and corroborated by direct simulations.
