Gap-Townes solitons and localized excitations in low dimensional Bose Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We discuss localized ground states of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices with attractive and repulsive three-body interactions in the framework of a quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation which extends the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to the one dimensional case. We use both a variational method and a self-consistent approach to show the existence of unstable localized excitations which are similar to Townes solitons of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two dimensions. These solutions are shown to be located in the forbidden zones of the band structure, very close to the band edges, separating decaying states from stable localized ones (gap-solitons) fully characterizing their delocalizing transition. In this context usual gap solitons appear as a mechanism for arresting collapse in low dimensional BEC in optical lattices with attractive real three-body interaction. The influence of the imaginary part of the three-body interaction, leading to dissipative effects on gap solitons and the effect of atoms feeding from the thermal cloud are also discussed. These results may be of interest for both BEC in atomic chip and Tonks-Girardeau gas in optical lattices.

Matter wave quantum dots (anti-dots) in ultracold atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures

The properties of ultracold atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures in external potentials are investigated and the existence of gap solitons of Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices demonstrated. Using a self-consistent approach we compute the energy spectrum and show that gap solitons can be viewed as matter wave realizations of quantum dots (anti-dots) with the bosonic density playing the role of trapping (expulsive) potential for the fermions. The fermionic states trapped in the condensate are shown to be at the bottom of the Fermi sea and therefore well protected from thermal decoherence. Energy levels, filling factors and parameters dependence of gap soliton quantum dots are also calculated both numerically and analytically.

Entangling power of permutation invariant quantum states

We investigate the von Neumann entanglement entropy as function of the size of a subsystem for permutation invariant ground states in models with finite number of states per site, e.g., in quantum spin models. We demonstrate that the entanglement entropy of $n$ sites in a system of length $L$ generically grows as $σ\log_{2}[2πen(L-n)/L]+C$, where $σ$ is the on-site spin and $C$ is a function depending only on magnetization.

Analytical approach to soliton ratchets in asymmetric potentials

We use soliton perturbation theory and collective coordinate ansatz to investigate the mechanism of soliton ratchets in a driven and damped asymmetric double sine-Gordon equation. We show that, at the second order of the perturbation scheme, the soliton internal vibrations can couple {\it effectively}, in presence of damping, to the motion of the center of mass, giving rise to transport. An analytical expression for the mean velocity of the soliton is derived. The results of our analysis confirm the internal mode mechanism of soliton ratchets proposed in [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 65} 025602(R) (2002)].

Logarithmic divergence of the block entanglement entropy for the ferromagnetic Heisenberg model

Recent studies have shown that logarithmic divergence of entanglement entropy as function of size of a subsystem is a signature of criticality in quantum models. We demonstrate that the ground state entanglement entropy of $ n$ sites for ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain of the length $L$ in a sector with fixed magnetization $y$ per site grows as ${1/2}\log_{2} \frac{n(L-n)}{L}C(y)$, where $C(y)=2πe({1/4}-y^{2})$

Macroscopic quantum bound states of Bose Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We discuss localized ground states of the periodic Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the framework of a quantum linear Schrödinger equation with effective potential determined in self-consistent manner. We show that depending on the interaction among the atoms being attractive or repulsive, bound states of the linear self consistent problem are formed in the forbidden zones of the linear spectrum below or above the energy bands. These eigenstates are shown to be exact solitons of the GPE equation. The implications of this bound state interpretation on the existence of a delocalization transition for multidimensional solitons is briefly discussed.

Adiabatic Compression of Soliton Matter Waves

The evolution of atomic solitary waves in Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) under adiabatic changes of the atomic scattering length is investigated. The variations of amplitude, width, and velocity of soliton are found for both spatial and time adiabatic variations. The possibility to use these variations to compress solitons up to very high local matter densities is shown both in absence and in presence of a parabolic confining potential.

A Model of Sequence Dependent Protein Diffusion Along Dna

We introduce a probabilistic model for protein sliding motion along DNA during the search of a target sequence. The model accounts for possible effects due to sequence-dependent interaction between the nonspecific DNA and the protein. As an example, we focus on T7 RNA-polymerase and exploit the available information about its interaction at the promoter site in order to investigate the influence of bacteriophage T7 DNA sequence on the dynamics of the sliding process. Hydrogen bonds in the major groove are used as the main sequence-dependent interaction between RNA-polymerase and DNA. The resulting dynamical properties and the possibility of an experimental verification are discussed in details. We show that, while at large times the process reaches a pure diffusive regime, it initially displays a sub-diffusive behavior. The subdiffusive regime can lasts sufficiently long to be of biological interest.

Soliton ratchets induced by ac forces with harmonic mixing

The ratchet dynamics of a kink (topological soliton) of a dissipative sine-Gordon equation in the presence of ac forces with harmonic mixing (at least bi-harmonic) of zero mean is studied. The dependence of the kink mean velocity on system parameters is investigated numerically and the results are compared with a perturbation analysis based on a point particle representation of the soliton. We find that first order perturbative calculations lead to incomplete descriptions, due to the important role played by the soliton-phonon interaction in establishing the phenomenon. The role played by the temporal symmetry of the system in establishing soliton ratchets is also emphasized. In particular, we show the existence of an asymmetric internal mode on the kink profile which couples to the kink translational mode through the damping in the system. Effective soliton transport is achieved when the internal mode and the external force get phase locked. We find that for kinks driven by bi-harmonic drivers consisting of the superposition of a fundamental driver with its first odd harmonic, the transport arises only due to this {\it internal mode} mechanism, while for bi-harmonic drivers with even harmonic superposition, also a point-particle contribution to the drift velocity is present. The phenomenon is robust enough to survive the presence of thermal noise in the system and can lead to several interesting physical applications.

Soliton ratchets

The mechanism underlying the soliton ratchet, both in absence and in presence of noise, is investigated. We show the existence of an asymmetric internal mode on the soliton profile which couples, trough the damping in the system, to the soliton translational mode. Effective soliton transport is achieved when the internal mode and the external force are phase locked. We use as working model a generalized double sine-Gordon equation. The phenomenon is expected to be valid for generic soliton systems.

Stabilization of ratchet dynamics by weak periodic signals

We study the influence of weak periodic signals on the transport properties of underdamped ratchets. We find that the constant current intervals related to the ratchet, can be significantly enlarged by a weak subharmonic signal which is in phase with the internal driver. This stabilization phenomenon is found to exist both in absence and in presence of noise. The dependence of this effect on the phase of the applied signal is also investigated.

Quantum shock waves in the Heisenberg XY model

We show the existence of quantum states of the Heisenberg XY chain which closely follow the motion of the corresponding semi-classical ones, and whose evolution resemble the propagation of a shock wave in a fluid. These states are exact solutions of the Schroedinger equation of the XY model and their classical counterpart are simply domain walls or soliton-like solutions.

Ferromagnetic ground states of the Hubbard model on a complete graph

We use group theory to derive the exact analytical expression of the ferromagnetic ground states of the Hubbard model on a complete graph for arbitrary lattice sites f and for arbitrary fillings $N$. We find that for $t>0$ and for $N=f+1$ the ground state is maximally ferromagnetic with total spin $S=(f-1)/2$. For $N > f+1$ the ground state is still ferromagnetic but becomes degenerate with respect to $S$.

Basis functions for strongly correlated Fermi systems

A general method to construct basis functions for fermionic systems which account for the $SU(2)$ symmetry and for the translational invariance of the Hamiltonian is presented. The method does not depend on the dimensionality of the system and it appears as a natural generalization of the Bethe Ansatz to the case of non integrable systems. As an example we present the block diagonalization of the Hubbard hamiltonian for finite number of sites in one and two dimensions.
