The isoperimetric problem for regular and crystalline norms in $\mathbb H^1$

We study the isoperimetric problem for anisotropic left-invariant perimeter measures on $\mathbb R^3$, endowed with the Heisenberg group structure. The perimeter is associated with a left-invariant norm $ϕ$ on the horizontal distribution. We first prove a representation formula for the $ϕ$-perimeter of regular sets and, assuming some regularity on $ϕ$ and on its dual norm $ϕ^*$, we deduce a foliation property by sub-Finsler geodesics of $\mathrm C^2$-smooth surfaces with constant $ϕ$-curvature. We then prove that the characteristic set of $\mathrm C^2$-smooth surfaces that are locally extremal for the isoperimetric problem is made of isolated points and horizontal curves satisfying a suitable differential equation. Based on such a characterization, we characterize $\mathrm C^2$-smooth $ϕ$-isoperimetric sets as the sub-Finsler analogue of Pansu's bubbles. We also show, under suitable regularity properties on $ϕ$, that such sub-Finsler candidate isoperimetric sets are indeed $\mathrm C^2$-smooth. By an approximation procedure, we finally prove a conditional minimality property for the candidate solutions in the general case (including the case where $ϕ$ is crystalline).

Existence of surfaces optimizing geometric and PDE shape functionals under reach constraint

This article deals with the existence of hypersurfaces minimizing general shape functionals under certain geometric constraints. We consider as admissible shapes orientable hypersurfaces satisfying a so-called reach condition, also known as the uniform ball property, which ensures C 1,1 regularity of the hypersurface. In this paper, we revisit and generalise the results of [9, 4, 5]. We provide a simpler framework and more concise proofs of some of the results contained in these references and extend them to a new class of problems involving PDEs. Indeed, by using the signed distance introduced by Delfour and Zolesio (see for instance [7]), we avoid the intensive and technical use of local maps, as was the case in the above references. Our approach, originally developed to solve an existence problem in [12], can be easily extended to costs involving different mathematical objects associated with the domain, such as solutions of elliptic equations on the hypersurface.

Upper and lower bounds for the maximal Lyapunov exponent of singularly perturbed linear switching systems

In this paper we consider the problem of determining the stability properties, and in particular assessing the exponential stability, of a singularly perturbed linear switching system. One of the challenges of this problem arises from the intricate interplay between the small parameter of singular perturbation and the rate of switching, as both tend to zero. Our approach consists in characterizing suitable auxiliary linear systems that provide lower and upper bounds for the asymptotics of the maximal Lyapunov exponent of the linear switching system as the parameter of the singular perturbation tends to zero.

Optimal shape of stellarators for magnetic confinement fusion

We are interested in the design of stellarators, devices for the production of controlled nuclear fusion reactions alternative to tokamaks. The confinement of the plasma is entirely achieved by a helical magnetic field created by the complex arrangement of coils fed by high currents around a toroidal domain. Such coils describe a surface called "coil winding surface" (CWS). In this paper, we model the design of the CWS as a shape optimization problem, so that the cost functional reflects both optimal plasma confinement properties, through a least square discrepancy, and also manufacturability, thanks to geometrical terms involving the lateral surface or the curvature of the CWS. We completely analyze the resulting problem: on the one hand, we establish the existence of an optimal shape, prove the shape differentiability of the criterion, and provide the expression of the differential in a workable form. On the other hand, we propose a numerical method and perform simulations of optimal stellarator shapes. We discuss the efficiency of our approach with respect to the literature in this area.

On the gap between deterministic and probabilistic joint spectral radii for discrete-time linear systems

Given a discrete-time linear switched system $Σ(\mathcal A)$ associated with a finite set $\mathcal A$ of matrices, we consider the measures of its asymptotic behavior given by, on the one hand, its deterministic joint spectral radius $ρ_{\mathrm d}(\mathcal A)$ and, on the other hand, its probabilistic joint spectral radii $ρ_{\mathrm p}(ν,P,\mathcal A)$ for Markov random switching signals with transition matrix $P$ and a corresponding invariant probability $ν$. Note that $ρ_{\mathrm d}(\mathcal A)$ is larger than or equal to $ρ_{\mathrm p}(ν,P,\mathcal A)$ for every pair $(ν, P)$. In this paper, we investigate the cases of equality of $ρ_{\mathrm d}(\mathcal A)$ with either a single $ρ_{\mathrm p}(ν,P,\mathcal A)$ or with the supremum of $ρ_{\mathrm p}(ν,P,\mathcal A)$ over $(ν,P)$ and we aim at characterizing the sets $\mathcal A$ for which such equalities may occur.

Local controllability does imply global controllability

We say that a control system is locally controllable if the attainable set from any state $x$ contains an open neighborhood of $x$, while it is controllable if the attainable set from any state is the entire state manifold. We show in this note that a control system satisfying local controllability is controllable. Our self-contained proof is alternative to the combination of two previous results by Kevin Grasse.

Lie algebra for rotational subsystems of a driven asymmetric top

We present an analytical approach to construct the Lie algebra of finite-dimensional subsystems of the driven asymmetric top rotor. Each rotational level is degenerate due to the isotropy of space, and the degeneracy increases with rotational excitation. For a given rotational excitation, we determine the nested commutators between drift and drive Hamiltonians using a graph representation. We then generate the Lie algebra for subsystems with arbitrary rotational excitation using an inductive argument.

Classical and quantum controllability of a rotating symmetric molecule

In this paper we study the controllability problem for a symmetric-top molecule, both for its classical and quantum rotational dynamics. The molecule is controlled through three orthogonal electric fields interacting with its electric dipole. We characterize the controllability in terms of the dipole position: when it lies along the symmetry axis of the molecule neither the classical nor the quantum dynamics are controllable, due to the presence of a conserved quantity, the third component of the total angular momentum; when it lies in the orthogonal plane to the symmetry axis, a quantum symmetry arises, due to the superposition of symmetric states, which has no classical counterpart. If the dipole is neither along the symmetry axis nor orthogonal to it, controllability for the classical dynamics and approximate controllability for the quantum dynamics are proved to hold. The approximate controllability of the symmetric-top Schroedinger equation is established by using a Lie-Galerkin method, based on block-wise approximations of the infinite-dimensional systems.

Approximately controllable finite-dimensional bilinear systems are controllable

We show that a bilinear control system is approximately controllable if and only if it is controllable in $\mathbb{R}^{n}\setminus\{0\}$. We approach this problem by looking at the foliation made by the orbits of the system, and by showing that there does not exist a codimension-one foliation in $\mathbb{R}^{n}\setminus\{0\}$ with dense leaves that are everywhere transversal to the radial direction. The proposed geometric approach allows to extend the results to homogeneous systems that are angularly controllable.

Ensemble qubit controllability with a single control via adiabatic and rotating wave approximations

In the physics literature it is common to see the rotating wave approximation andthe adiabatic approximation used "in cascade" to justify the use of chirped pulses for two-level quantum systems driven by one external field, in particular when the resonance frequency of the system is not known precisely. Both approximations need relatively long time and are essentially based on averaging theory of dynamical systems. Unfortunately, the two approximations cannot be done independently since, in a sense, the two time scales interact. The purpose of this paper is to study how the cascade of the two approximations can be justified and how large becomes the final time as the fidelity goes to one, while preserving the robustness of the adiabatic strategy. Our first result, based on high-order averaging techniques, gives a precise quantification of the uncertainty interval of the resonance frequency for which the population inversion works. As a byproduct of this result, we prove that it is possible to control an ensemble of spin systems by a single real-valued control, providing a non-trivial extension of a celebrated result of ensemble controllability with two controls by Khaneja and Li.

Effective adiabatic control of a decoupled Hamiltonian obtained by rotating wave approximation

In this paper we study up to which extent we can apply adiabatic control strategies to a quantum control model obtained by rotating wave approximation. In particular, we show that, under suitable assumptions on the asymptotic regime between the parameters characterizing the rotating wave and the adiabatic approximations, the induced flow converges to the one obtained by considering the two approximations separately and by combining them formally in cascade. As a consequence, we propose explicit control laws which can be used to induce desired populations transfers, robustly with respect to parameter dispersions in the controlled Hamiltonian.

Complete Controllability Despite Degeneracy: Quantum Control of Enantiomer-Specific State Transfer in Chiral Molecules

We prove complete controllability for rotational states of an asymmetric top molecule belonging to degenerate values of the orientational quantum number M. Based on this insight, we construct a pulse sequence that energetically separates population initially distributed over degenerate M-states, as a precursor for orientational purification. Introducing the concept of enantio-selective controllability, we determine the conditions for complete enantiomer-specific population transfer in chiral molecules and construct pulse sequences realizing this transfer for population initially distributed over degenerate M-states. This degeneracy presently limits enantiomer-selectivity for any initial state except the rotational ground state. Our work thus shows how to overcome an important obstacle towards separating, with electric fields only, left-handed from right-handed molecules in a racemic mixture.

Fuller singularities for generic control-affine systems with an even number of controls

In this article we study how bad can be the singularities of a time-optimal trajectory of a generic control affine system. In the case where the control is scalar and belongs to a closed interval it was recently shown in [6] that singularities cannot be, generically, worse than finite order accumulations of Fuller points, with order of accumulation lower than a bound depending only on the dimension of the manifold where the system is set. We extend here such a result to the case where the control has an even number of scalar components and belongs to a closed ball.

Lyapunov characterization of uniform exponential stability for nonlinear infinite-dimensional systems

In this paper we deal with infinite-dimensional nonlinear forward complete dynamical systems which are subject to external disturbances. We first extend the well-known Datko lemma to the framework of the considered class of systems. Thanks to this generalization, we provide characterizations of the uniform (with respect to disturbances) local, semi-global, and global exponential stability, through the existence of coercive and non-coercive Lyapunov functionals. The importance of the obtained results is underlined through some applications concerning 1) exponential stability of nonlinear retarded systems with piecewise constant delays, 2) exponential stability preservation under sampling for semilinear control switching systems, and 3) the link between input-to-state stability and exponential stability of semilinear switching systems.

Switching systems with dwell time: computation of the maximal Lyapunov exponent

We study asymptotic stability of continuous-time systems with mode-dependent guaranteed dwell time. These systems are reformulated as special cases of a general class of mixed (discrete-continuous) linear switching systems on graphs, in which some modes correspond to discrete actions and some others correspond to continuous-time evolutions. Each discrete action has its own positive weight which accounts for its time-duration. We develop a theory of stability for the mixed systems; in particular, we prove the existence of an invariant Lyapunov norm for mixed systems on graphs and study its structure in various cases, including discrete-time systems for which discrete actions have inhomogeneous time durations. This allows us to adapt recent methods for the joint spectral radius computation (Gripenberg's algorithm and the Invariant Polytope Algorithm) to compute the Lyapunov exponent of mixed systems on graphs.

An obstruction to small-time controllability of the bilinear Schr{ö}dinger equation

In this article we discuss which controllability properties of classical Hamiltonian systems are preserved after quantization. We discuss some necessary and some sufficient conditions for small-time controllability of classical systems and quantum systems using the WKB method. In particular, we investigate the conjecture that if the classical system is not small-time controllable, then the corresponding quantum system is not small-time controllable either.

On the compatibility between the adiabatic and the rotating wave approximations in quantum control

In this paper, we discuss the compatibility between the rotating-wave and the adiabatic approximations for controlled quantum systems. Although the paper focuses on applications to two-level quantum systems, the main results apply in higher dimension. Under some suitable hypotheses on the time scales, the two approximations can be combined. As a natural consequence of this, it is possible to design control laws achieving transitions of states between two energy levels of the Hamiltonian that are robust with respect to inhomogeneities of the amplitude of the control input.

Semi-conical eigenvalue intersections and the ensemble controllability problem for quantum systems

We study one-parametric perturbations of finite dimensional real Hamiltonians depending on two controls, and we show that generically in the space of Hamiltonians, conical intersections of eigenvalues can degenerate into semi-conical intersections of eigenvalues. Then, through the use of normal forms, we study the problem of ensemble controllability between the eigenstates of a generic Hamiltonian.
