Dwell-time control sets and applications to the stability analysis of linear switched systems

We propose an extension of the theory of control sets to the case of inputs satisfying a dwell-time constraint. Although the class of such inputs is not closed under concatenation, we propose a suitably modified definition of control sets that allows to recover some important properties known in the concatenable case. In particular we apply the control set construction to dwell-time linear switched systems, characterizing their maximal Lyapunov exponent looking only at trajectories whose angular component is periodic. We also use such a construction to characterize supports of invariant measures for random switched systems with dwell-time constraints.

On the Whitney extension property for continuously differentiable horizontal curves in sub-Riemannian manifolds

In this article we study the validity of the Whitney $C^1$ extension property for horizontal curves in sub-Riemannian manifolds endowed with 1-jets that satisfy a first-order Taylor expansion compatibility condition. We first consider the equiregular case, where we show that the extension property holds true whenever a suitable non-singularity property holds for the input-output maps on the Carnot groups obtained by nilpotent approximation. We then discuss the case of sub-Riemannian manifolds with singular points and we show that all step-2 manifolds satisfy the $C^1$ extension property. We conclude by showing that the $C^1$ extension property implies a Lusin-like approximation theorem for horizontal curves on sub-Riemannian manifolds.

Time-Optimal Trajectories of Generic Control-Affine Systems Have at Worst Iterated Fuller Singularities

We consider in this paper the regularity problem for time-optimal trajectories of a single-input control-affine system on a n-dimensional manifold. We prove that, under generic conditions on the drift and the controlled vector field, any control u associated with an optimal trajectory is smooth out of a countable set of times. More precisely, there exists an integer K, only depending on the dimension n, such that the non-smoothness set of u is made of isolated points, accumulations of isolated points, and so on up to K-th order iterated accumulations.

Approximate and exact controllability of linear difference equations

In this paper, we study approximate and exact controllability of the linear difference equation $x(t) = \sum\_{j=1}^N A\_j x(t - Λ\_j) + B u(t)$ in $L^2$, with $x(t) \in \mathbb C^d$ and $u(t) \in \mathbb C^m$, using as a basic tool a representation formula for its solution in terms of the initial condition, the control $u$, and some suitable matrix coefficients. When $Λ\_1, \dotsc, Λ\_N$ are commensurable, approximate and exact controllability are equivalent and can be characterized by a Kalman criterion. This paper focuses on providing characterizations of approximate and exact controllability without the commensurability assumption. In the case of two-dimensional systems with two delays, we obtain an explicit characterization of approximate and exact controllability in terms of the parameters of the problem. In the general setting, we prove that approximate controllability from zero to constant states is equivalent to approximate controllability in $L^2$. The corresponding result for exact controllability is true at least for two-dimensional systems with two delays.

Pliability, or the whitney extension theorem for curves in carnot groups

The Whitney extension theorem is a classical result in analysis giving a necessary and sufficient condition for a function defined on a closed set to be extendable to the whole space with a given class of regularity. It has been adapted to several settings, among which the one of Carnot groups. However, the target space has generally been assumed to be equal to R^d for some d $\ge$ 1. We focus here on the extendability problem for general ordered pairs (G\_1,G\_2) (with G\_2 non-Abelian). We analyze in particular the case G\_1 = R and characterize the groups G\_2 for which the Whitney extension property holds, in terms of a newly introduced notion that we call pliability. Pliability happens to be related to rigidity as defined by Bryant an Hsu. We exploit this relation in order to provide examples of non-pliable Carnot groups, that is, Carnot groups so that the Whitney extension property does not hold. We use geometric control theory results on the accessibility of control affine systems in order to test the pliability of a Carnot group. In particular, we recover some recent results by Le Donne, Speight and Zimmermann about Lusin approximation in Carnot groups of step 2 and Whitney extension in Heisenberg groups. We extend such results to all pliable Carnot groups, and we show that the latter may be of arbitrarily large step.

Generic singularities of line fields on 2D manifolds

Generic singularities of line fields have been studied for lines of principal curvature of embedded surfaces. In this paper we propose an approach to classify generic singularities of general line fields on 2D manifolds. The idea is to identify line fields as bisectors of pairs of vector fields on the manifold, with respect to a given conformal structure. The singularities correspond to the zeros of the vector fields and the genericity is considered with respect to a natural topology in the space of pairs of vector fields. Line fields at generic singularities turn out to be topologically equivalent to the Lemon, Star and Monstar singularities that one finds at umbilical points.

A characterization of switched linear control systems with finite L 2 -gain

Motivated by an open problem posed by J.P. Hespanha, we extend the notion of Barabanov norm and extremal trajectory to classes of switching signals that are not closed under concatenation. We use these tools to prove that the finiteness of the L2-gain is equivalent, for a large set of switched linear control systems, to the condition that the generalized spectral radius associated with any minimal realization of the original switched system is smaller than one.

Stability of non-autonomous difference equations with applications to transport and wave propagation on networks

In this paper, we address the stability of transport systems and wave propagation on networks with time-varying parameters. We do so by reformulating these systems as non-autonomous difference equations and by providing a suitable representation of their solutions in terms of their initial conditions and some time-dependent matrix coefficients. This enables us to characterize the asymptotic behavior of solutions in terms of such coefficients. In the case of difference equations with arbitrary switching, we obtain a delay-independent generalization of the well-known criterion for autonomous systems due to Hale and Silkowski. As a consequence, we show that exponential stability of transport systems and wave propagation on networks is robust with respect to variations of the lengths of the edges of the network preserving their rational dependence structure. This leads to our main result: the wave equation on a network with arbitrarily switching damping at external vertices is exponentially stable if and only if the network is a tree and the damping is bounded away from zero at all external vertices but at most one.

Sub-Finsler structures from the time-optimal control viewpoint for some nilpotent distributions

In this paper we study the sub-Finsler geometry as a time-optimal control problem. In particular, we consider non-smooth and non-strictly convex sub-Finsler structures associated with the Heisenberg, Grushin, and Martinet distributions. Motivated by problems in geometric group theory, we characterize extremal curves, discuss their optimality, and calculate the metric spheres, proving their Euclidean rectifiability.

Persistently damped transport on a network of circles

In this paper we address the exponential stability of a system of transport equations with intermittent damping on a network of $N \geq 2$ circles intersecting at a single point $O$. The $N$ equations are coupled through a linear mixing of their values at $O$, described by a matrix $M$. The activity of the intermittent damping is determined by persistently exciting signals, all belonging to a fixed class. The main result is that, under suitable hypotheses on $M$ and on the rationality of the ratios between the lengths of the circles, such a system is exponentially stable, uniformly with respect to the persistently exciting signals. The proof relies on an explicit formula for the solutions of this system, which allows one to track down the effects of the intermittent damping.

Controllability of spin-boson systems

In this paper we study the so-called spin-boson system, namely {a two-level system} in interaction with a distinguished mode of a quantized bosonic field. We give a brief description of the controlled Rabi and Jaynes--Cummings models and we discuss their appearance in the mathematics and physics literature. We then study the controllability of the Rabi model when the control is an external field acting on the bosonic part. Applying geometric control techniques to the Galerkin approximation and using perturbation theory to guarantee non-resonance of the spectrum of the drift operator, we prove approximate controllability of the system, for almost every value of the interaction parameter.

Approximate Controllability of the Two Trapped Ions System

We prove the approximate controllability of a bilinear Schrödinger equation modelling a two trapped ions system. A new spectral decoupling technique is introduced, which allows to analyze the controllability of the infinite-dimensional system through finite-dimensional considerations.

Approximate controllability, exact controllability, and conical eigenvalue intersections for quantum mechanical systems

We study the controllability of a closed control-affine quantum system driven by two or more external fields. We provide a sufficient condition for controllability in terms of existence of conical intersections between eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian in dependence of the controls seen as parameters. Such spectral condition is structurally stable in the case of three controls or in the case of two controls when the Hamiltonian is real. The spectral condition appears naturally in the adiabatic control framework and yields approximate controllability in the infinite-dimensional case. In the finite-dimensional case it implies that the system is Lie-bracket generating when lifted to the group of unitary transformations, and in particular that it is exactly controllable. Hence, Lie algebraic conditions are deduced from purely spectral properties. We conclude the article by proving that approximate and exact controllability are equivalent properties for general finite-dimensional quantum systems.

Growth rates for persistently excited linear systems

We consider a family of linear control systems $\dot{x}=Ax+αBu$ where $α$ belongs to a given class of persistently exciting signals. We seek maximal $α$-uniform stabilisation and destabilisation by means of linear feedbacks $u=Kx$. We extend previous results obtained for bidimensional single-input linear control systems to the general case as follows: if the pair $(A,B)$ verifies a certain Lie bracket generating condition, then the maximal rate of convergence of $(A,B)$ is equal to the maximal rate of divergence of $(-A,-B)$. We also provide more precise results in the general single-input case, where the above result is obtained under the sole assumption of controllability of the pair $(A,B)$.

On the controllability of quantum transport in an electronic nanostructure

We investigate the controllability of quantum electrons trapped in a two-dimensional device, typically a MOS field-effect transistor. The problem is modeled by the Schrödinger equation in a bounded domain coupled to the Poisson equation for the electrical potential. The controller acts on the system through the boundary condition on the potential, on a part of the boundary modeling the gate. We prove that, generically with respect to the shape of the domain and boundary conditions on the gate, the device is controllable. We also consider control properties of a more realistic nonlinear version of the device, taking into account the self-consistent electrostatic Poisson potential.

On some open questions in bilinear quantum control

The aim of this paper is to provide a short introduction to modern issues in the control of infinite dimensional closed quantum systems, driven by the bilinear Schrödinger equation. The first part is a quick presentation of some of the numerous recent developments in the fields. This short summary is intended to demonstrate the variety of tools and approaches used by various teams in the last decade. In a second part, we present four examples of bilinear closed quantum systems. These examples were extensively studied and may be used as a convenient and efficient test bench for new conjectures. Finally, we list some open questions, both of theoretical and practical interest.

Multi-input Schrödinger equation: controllability, tracking, and application to the quantum angular momentum

We present a sufficient condition for approximate controllability of the bilinear discrete-spectrum Schrödinger equation exploiting the use of several controls. The controllability result extends to simultaneous controllability, approximate controllability in $H^s$, and tracking in modulus. The result is more general than those present in the literature even in the case of one control and permits to treat situations in which the spectrum of the uncontrolled operator is very degenerate (e.g. it has multiple eigenvalues or equal gaps among different pairs of eigenvalues). We apply the general result to a rotating polar linear molecule, driven by three orthogonal external fields. A remarkable property of this model is the presence of infinitely many degeneracies and resonances in the spectrum preventing the application of the results in the literature.
