Poisson Manifolds of Compact Types with an Appendix by Joshua Mundinger

We develop the theory of Poisson and Dirac manifolds of compact types, a broad generalization in Poisson and Dirac geometry of compact Lie algebras and Lie groups. We establish key structural results, including local normal forms, canonical stratifications, and a Weyl type resolution, which provides a way to resolve the singularities of the original structure. These tools allow us to show that the leaf space of such manifolds is an integral affine orbifold and to define their Weyl group. This group is a Coxeter group acting on the orbifold universal cover of the leaf space by integral affine transformations, and one can associate to it Weyl chambers, reflection hyperplanes, etc. We further develop a Duistermaat-Heckman theory for Poisson manifolds of s-proper type, proving the linear variation of cohomology of leafwise symplectic form and establishing a Weyl integration formula. As an application, we show that every Poisson manifold of compact type is necessarily regular. We conclude the paper with a list of open problems.

Haefliger's differentiable cohomology

We review Haefliger's differentiable cohomology for the pseudogroup of diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^q$. We investigate the structure needed to define such a cohomology, which, remarkably, is related to the so called Cartan distribution underlying the geometric study of PDE. We define an analogue of Haefliger differentiable cohomology for flat Cartan groupoids, investigate its infinitesimal counterpart and relate the two by a Van Est-like map. Finally, we define a characteristic map for geometric structures on manifolds $M$ associated to flat Cartan groupoids. The outcome generalizes the existing approaches to characteristic classes for foliations.

Deformations of Lie groupoids

We study deformations of Lie groupoids by means of the cohomology which controls them. This cohomology turns out to provide an intrinsic model for the cohomology of a Lie groupoid with values in its adjoint representation. We prove several fundamental properties of the deformation cohomology including Morita invariance, a van Est theorem, and a vanishing result in the proper case. Combined with Moser's deformation arguments for groupoids, we obtain several rigidity and normal form results.

The transverse density bundle and modular classes of Lie groupoids

In this note we revisit the notions of transverse density bundle and of modular classes of Lie algebroids and Lie groupoids; in particular, we point out that one should use the transverse density bundle $\mathcal{D}_{A}^{\textrm{tr}}$ instead of $Q_A$, which is the representation that is commonly used when talking about modular classes. One of the reasons for this is that, as we will see, $Q_A$ is not really an object associated to the stack presented by a Lie groupoid (in general, it is not a representation of the groupoid!).

Measures on differentiable stacks

We introduce and study measures and densities (= geometric measures) on differentiable stacks, using a rather straightforward generalization of Haefliger's approach to leaf spaces and to transverse measures for foliations. In general we prove Morita invariance, a Stokes formula which provides reinterpretations in terms of (Ruelle-Sullivan type) algebroid currents, and a Van Est isomorphism. In the proper case we reduce the theory to classical (Radon) measures on the underlying space, we provide explicit (Weyl-type) formulas that shed light on Weinstein's notion of volumes of differentiable stacks, in particular, in the symplectic case, we prove the conjecture left open in Weinstein's "The volume of a differentiable stack". We also revisit the notion of Haar systems (and the existence of cut-off functions). Our original motivation comes from the study of Poisson manifolds of compact types, which provide two important examples of such measures: the affine and the Duistermaat-Heckman measures.

From PDEs to Pfaffian fibrations

We explain how to encode the essential data of a PDE on jet bundle into a more intrinsic object called Pfaffian fibration. We provide motivations to study this new notion and show how prolongations, integrability and linearisations of PDEs generalise to this setting.

Regular Poisson manifolds of compact types (PMCT 2)

This is the second paper of a series dedicated to the study of Poisson structures of compact types (PMCTs). In this paper, we focus on regular PMCTs, exhibiting a rich transverse geometry. We show that their leaf spaces are integral affine orbifolds. We prove that the cohomology class of the leafwise symplectic form varies linearly and that there is a distinguished polynomial function describing the leafwise sympletic volume. The leaf space of a PMCT carries a natural Duistermaat-Heckman measure and a Weyl type integration formula holds. We introduce the notion of a symplectic gerbe, and we show that they obstruct realizing PMCTs as the base of a symplectic complete isotropic fibration (a.k.a. a non-commutative integrable system).

Lie Pseudogroups à la Cartan

We present a modern formulation of Élie Cartan's structure theory for Lie pseudogroups and prove a reduction theorem that clarifies the role of Cartan's systatic system. The paper is divided into three parts. In part one, using notions coming from the theory of Lie groupoids and algebroids, we introduce the framework of Cartan algebroids and realizations, structures that encode Cartan's structure equations and notion of a pseudogroup in normal form. In part two, we present a novel proof of Cartan's Second Fundamental Theorem, which states that any Lie pseudogroup is equivalent to a pseudogroup in normal form. In part three, we prove a new reduction theorem that states that, under suitable regularity conditions, a pseudogroup in normal form canonically reduces to a generalized pseudogroup of local solutions of a Lie-Pfaffian groupoid.

Orbispaces as differentiable stratified spaces

We present some features of the smooth structure, and of the canonical stratification on the orbit space of a proper Lie groupoid. One of the main features is that of Morita invariance of these structures - it allows us to talk about the canonical structure of differentiable stratified space on the orbispace (an object analogous to a separated stack in algebraic geometry) presented by the proper Lie groupoid. The canonical smooth structure on an orbispace is studied mainly via Spallek's framework of differentiable spaces, and two alternative frameworks are then presented. For the canonical stratification on an orbispace, we extend the similar theory coming from proper Lie group actions. We make no claim to originality. The goal of these notes is simply to give a complementary exposition to those available, and to clarify some subtle points where the literature can sometimes be confusing, even in the classical case of proper Lie group actions.

Poisson Manifolds of Compact Types (PMCT 1)

This is the first in a series of papers dedicated to the study of Poisson manifolds of compact types (PMCTs). This notion encompasses several classes of Poisson manifolds defined via properties of their symplectic integrations. In this first paper we establish some fundamental properties of PMCTs, which already show that they are the analogues of compact symplectic manifolds, thus placing them in a prominent position among all Poisson manifolds. For instance, their Poisson cohomology behaves very much like the de Rham cohomology of compact symplectic manifolds (Hodge decomposition, non-degenerate Poincaré duality pairing, etc.) and the Moser trick can be adapted to PMCTs. More important, we find unexpected connections between PMCTs and Symplectic Topology: PMCTs are related with the theory of Lagrangian fibrations and we exhibit a construction of a nontrivial PMCT related to a classical question on the topology of the orbits of a free symplectic circle action. In subsequent papers, we will establish deep connections between PMCTs and integral affine geometry, Hamiltonian $G$-spaces, foliation theory, Lie theory and symplectic gerbes.

Jacobi structures and Spencer operators

This paper explains the fundamental relation between Jacobi structures and the classical Spencer operator coming from the theory of PDEs so as to provide a direct and geometric approach to the integrability of Jacobi structures. It uses recent results on the integrability of Spencer operators and multliplicative forms on Lie groupoids with non-trivial coefficients. In Theorem 1 we show that the Spencer operator associated to a contact groupoid reveals that the base manifold carries a Jacobi structure. Theorem 2 deals with the problem of integrating Jacobi structures to contact groupoids.

A survey on stability and rigidity results for Lie algebras

We give simple and unified proofs of the known stability and rigidity results for Lie algebras, Lie subalgebras and Lie algebra homomorphisms. Moreover, we investigate when a Lie algebra homomorphism is stable under all automorphisms of the codomain (including outer automorphisms).

On the linearization theorem for proper Lie groupoids

We revisit the linearization theorems for proper Lie groupoids around general orbits (statements and proofs). In the the fixed point case (known as Zung's theorem) we give a shorter and more geometric proof, based on a Moser deformation argument. The passing to general orbits (Weinstein) is given a more conceptual interpretation: as a manifestation of Morita invariance. We also clarify the precise conditions needed for the theorem to hold (which often have been misstated in the literature).

Multiplicative Forms and Spencer Operators

Motivated by our attempt to recast Cartan's work on Lie pseudogroups in a more global and modern language, we are brought back to the question of understanding the linearization of multiplicative forms on groupoids and the corresponding integrability problem. From this point of view, the novelty of this paper is that we study forms with coefficients. However, the main contribution of this paper is conceptual: the finding of the relationship between multiplicative forms and Cartan's work, which provides a completely new approach to integrability theorems for multiplicative forms. Back to Cartan, the multiplicative point of view shows that, modulo Lie's functor, the Cartan Pfaffian system (itself a multiplicative form with coefficients!) is the same thing as the classical Spencer operator.

A Normal Form Theorem around Symplectic Leaves

We prove the Poisson geometric version of the Local Reeb Stability (from foliation theory) and of the Slice Theorem (from equivariant geometry). The result is also a generalization of Conn's linearization theorem from one-point leaves to arbitrary symplectic leaves (however, we do not make use of Conn's theorem).

Representations up to homotopy of Lie algebroids

We introduce and study the notion of representation up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid, paying special attention to examples. We use representations up to homotopy to define the adjoint representation of a Lie algebroid and show that the resulting cohomology controls the deformations of the structure. The Weil algebra of a Lie algebroid is defined and shown to coincide with Kalkman's BRST model for equivariant cohomology in the case of group actions.

The Weil algebra and the Van Est isomorphism

This paper belongs to a series devoted to the study of the cohomology of classifying spaces. Generalizing the Weil algebra of a Lie algebra and Kalkman's BRST model, here we introduce the Weil algebra $W(A)$ associated to any Lie algebroid $A$. We then show that this Weil algebra is related to the Bott-Shulman-Stasheff complex (computing the cohomology of the classifying space) via a Van Est map and we prove a Van Est isomorphism theorem. As application, we generalize and find a simpler more conceptual proof of the main result of Bursztyn et.al. on the reconstructions of multiplicative forms and of a result of Weinstein-Xu and Crainic on the reconstruction of connection 1-forms. This reveals the relevance of the Weil algebra and Van Est maps to the integration and the pre-quantization of Poisson (and Dirac) manifolds.
