Comparison theorems for closed geodesics on negatively curved surfaces

In this note we present new asymptotic estimates comparing the word length and geodesic length of closed geodesics on surfaces with (variable) negative sectional curvatures. In particular, we provide an averaged comparison of these two important quantities and obtain precise statistical results, including a central limit theorem and a local limit theorem. Further, as a corollary we also improve an asymptotic formula of R. Sharp and the second author. Finally, we relate our results to recent work of Gekhtman, Taylor and Tiozzo.

How many inflections are there in the Lyapunov spectrum?

Iommi & Kiwi showed that the Lyapunov spectrum of an expanding map need not be concave, and posed various problems concerning the possible number of inflection points. In this paper we answer a conjecture of Iommi & Kiwi by proving that the Lyapunov spectrum of a two branch piecewise linear map has at most two points of inflection. We then answer a question of Iommi & Kiwi by proving that there exist finite branch piecewise linear maps whose Lyapunov spectra have arbitrarily many points of inflection. This approach is used to exhibit a countable branch piecewise linear map whose Lyapunov spectrum has infinitely many points of inflection.

Rigorous effective bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of continued fraction Cantor sets: a hundred decimal digits for the dimension of $E_2$

We prove that the algorithm of [13] for approximating the Hausdorff dimension of dynamically defined Cantor sets, using periodic points of the underlying dynamical system, can be used to establish completely rigorous high accuracy bounds on the dimension. The effectiveness of these rigorous estimates is illustrated for Cantor sets consisting of continued fraction expansions with restricted digits. For example the Hausdorff dimension of the set $E_2$ (of those reals whose continued fraction expansion only contains digits 1 and 2) can be rigorously approximated, with an accuracy of over 100 decimal places, using points of period up to 25. The method for establishing rigorous dimension bounds involves the holomorphic extension of mappings associated to the allowed continued fraction digits, an appropriate disc which is contracted by these mappings, and an associated transfer operator acting on the Hilbert Hardy space of analytic functions on this disc. We introduce methods for rigorously bounding the approximation numbers for the transfer operators, showing that this leads to effective estimates on the Taylor coefficients of the associated determinant, and hence to explicit bounds on the Hausdorff dimension.

Asymptotic Counting in Conformal Dynamical Systems

In this article we consider the general setting of conformal graph directed Markov systems modeled by countable state symbolic subshifts of finite type. We deal with two classes of such systems: attracting and parabolic. The latter being treated by means of the former. We prove fairly complete asymptotic counting results for multipliers and diameters associated with preimages or periodic orbits ordered hy a natural geometric weighting. We also prove the corresponding Central Limit Theorems describing the further features of the distribution of their weights. These have direct applications to a variety of examples, including the case of Apollonian Circle Packings, Apollonian Triangle, expanding and parabolic rational functions, Farey maps, continued fractions, Mannenville-Pomeau maps, Schottky groups, Fuchsian groups, and many more. A fairly complete collection of asymptotic counting results for them is presented. Our new approach is founded on spectral properties of complexified Ruelle--Perron--Frobenius operators and Tauberian theorems as used in classical problems of prime number theory.

Phase transitions in long-range Ising models and an optimal condition for factors of $g$-measures

We weaken the assumption of summable variations in a paper by Verbitskiy \cite{verb} to a weaker condition, Berbee's condition, in order for a 1-block factor (a single site renormalisation) of the full shift space on finitely many symbols to have a $g$-measure with a continuous $g$-function. But we also prove by means of a counterexample, that this condition is (within constants) optimal. The counterexample is based on the second of our main results, where we prove that there is an inverse critical temperature in a one-sided long-range Ising model which is at most 8 times the critical inverse temperature for the (two-sided) Ising model with long-range interactions.

Joint spectral radius, Sturmian measures, and the finiteness conjecture

The joint spectral radius of a pair of 2x2 real matrices $(A_0,A_1)\in M_2(\mathbb{R})^2$ is defined to be $r(A_0,A_1)= \limsup_{n\to\infty} \max \{\|A_{i_1}...A_{i_n}\|^{1/n}: i_j\in\{0,1\}\}$, the optimal growth rate of the norm of products of these matrices. The Lagarias-Wang finiteness conjecture, asserting that $r(A_0,A_1)$ is always the nth root of the spectral radius of some length-n product $A_{i_1}...A_{i_n}$, has been refuted by Bousch & Mairesse, with subsequent counterexamples presented by Blondel, Theys & Vladimirov; Kozyakin; Hare, Morris, Sidorov & Theys. In this article we introduce a new approach to generating finiteness counterexamples, and use this to exhibit an open subset of $M_2(\mathbb{R})^2$ with the property that each member $(A_0,A_1)$ of the subset generates uncountably many counterexamples of the form $(A_0, tA_1)$. Our methods employ ergodic theory, in particular the analysis of Sturmian invariant measures; this approach allows a short proof that the relation between the parameter $t$ and the Sturmian parameter $P(t)$ is a devil's staircase.

Non-Escaping Sets in Conformal Dynamical Systems and Singular Perturbations of Perron-Frobenius Operators

The study of escape rates for a ball in a dynamical systems has been much studied. Understanding the asymptotic behavior of the escape rate as the radius of the ball tends to zero is an especially subtle problem. In the case of hyperbolic conformal systems this has been addressed by various authors. In this paper we consider a far more general realm of conformal maps where the analysis is correspondingly more complicated. We prove the existence of escape rates and calculate them in the context of countable alphabets, either finite or infinite, uniformly contracting conformal graph directed Markov systems with their special case of conformal countable alphabet iterated function systems. This goal is achieved by developing the appropriate theory of singular perturbations of Perron-Frobenius (transfer) operators associated with countable alphabet subshifts of finite type and Hölder continuous summable potentials. This is the key ingredient for further results about other conformal systems. These include topological Collet-Eckmann multimodal interval maps and rational maps of the Riemann sphere (an equivalent formulation is to be uniformly hyperbolic on periodic points), and also a large class of transcendental meromorphic functions.

Controlling the statistical properties of expanding maps

How can one change a system, in order to change its statistical properties in a prescribed way? In this note we consider a control problem related to the theory of linear response. Given an expanding map of the unit circle with an associated invariant density we can consider the inverse problem of finding which first order changes in the transformation can achieve a given first order perturbation in the density. We show the general mathematical structure of the problem, the existence of many solutions in the case of expanding maps of the circle and the existence of optimal ones. We investigate in depth the example of the doubling map, where we give a complete solution of the problem.

Ergodic Theory of Kusuoka Measures

In the analysis on self-similar fractal sets, the Kusuoka measure plays an important role (cf. \cite{kusuoka2}, \cite{kajino}, \cite{str3}). Here we investigate the Kusuoka measure from an ergodic theoretic viewpoint, seen as an invariant measure on a symbolic space. Our investigation shows that the Kusuoka measure generalizes Bernoulli measures and their properties to higher dimensions of an underlying finite dimensional vector space. Our main result is that the transfer operator on functions has a spectral gap when restricted to a certain Banach space that contains the Hölder continuous functions, as well as the highly discontinuous $g$-function associated to the Kusuoka measure. As a consequence, we obtain exponential decay of correlations. In addition, we provide some explicit rates of convergence for a family of generalized Sierpiśki gaskets.

Uniform scaling limits for ergodic measures

We prove that ergodic measures on one-sided shift spaces are uniformly scaling in the sense of Gavish. That is, given a shift ergodic measure we prove that at almost every point the scenery distributions weakly converge to a common distribution on the space of measures. Moreover, we give an explicit description of the limiting distribution in terms of a `reverse Jacobian' function associated with the corresponding measure on the space of left infinite sequences.

Logarithm laws for equilibrium states in negative curvature

Let $M$ be a pinched negatively curved Riemannian manifold, whose unit tangent bundle is endowed with a Gibbs measure $m_F$ associated to a potential $F$. We compute the Hausdorff dimension of the conditional measures of $m_F$. We study the $m_F$-almost sure asymptotic penetration behaviour of locally geodesic lines of $M$ into small neighbourhoods of closed geodesics, and of other compact (locally) convex subsets of $M$. We prove Khintchine-type and logarithm law-type results for the spiraling of geodesic lines around these objects. As an arithmetic consequence, we give almost sure Diophantine approximation results of real numbers by quadratic irrationals with respect to general Hölder quasi-invariant measures.

Equilibrium states in negative curvature

With their origin in thermodynamics and symbolic dynamics, Gibbs measures are crucial tools to study the ergodic theory of the geodesic flow on negatively curved manifolds. We develop a framework (through Patterson-Sullivan densities) allowing us to get rid of compactness assumptions on the manifold, and prove many existence, uniqueness and finiteness results of Gibbs measures. We give many applications, to the Variational Principle, the counting and equidistribution of orbit points and periods, the unique ergodicity of the strong unstable foliation and the classification of Gibbs densities on some Riemannian covers.

Anosov Flows and Dynamical Zeta Functions

We study the Ruelle and Selberg zeta functions for $\Cs^r$ Anosov flows, $r > 2$, on a compact smooth manifold. We prove several results, the most remarkable being: (a) for $\Cs^\infty$ flows the zeta function is meromorphic on the entire complex plane; (b) for contact flows satisfying a bunching condition (e.g. geodesic flows on manifolds of negative curvature better than $\frac 19$-pinched) the zeta function has a pole at the topological entropy and is analytic in a strip to its left; (c) under the same hypotheses as in (b) we obtain sharp results on the number of periodic orbits. Our arguments are based on the study of the spectral properties of a transfer operator acting on suitable Banach spaces of anisotropic currents.

Recovering the time-dependent transmission rate from infection data via solution of an inverse ODE problem

The transmission rate of many acute infectious diseases varies significantly in time, but the underlying mechanisms are usually uncertain. They may include seasonal changes in the environment, contact rate, immune system response, etc. The transmission rate has been thought difficult to measure directly. We present a new algorithm to compute the time-dependent transmission rate directly from prevalence data, which makes no assumptions about the number of susceptibles or vital rates. The algorithm follows our complete and explicit solution of a mathematical inverse problem for SIR-type transmission models. We prove that almost any infection profile can be perfectly fitted by an SIR model with variable transmission rate. This clearly shows a serious danger of over-fitting such transmission models. We illustrate the algorithm with historic UK measles data and our observations support the common belief that measles transmission was predominantly driven by school contacts.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the escape rate of a Gibbs measure supported on a conformal repeller through a small hole. There are additional applications to the convergence of Hausdorff dimension of the survivor set.

Unique Bernoulli g-measures

We improve and subsume the conditions of Johansson and Öberg [18] and Berbee [2] for uniqueness of a g-measure, i.e., a stationary distribution for chains with complete connections. In addition, we prove that these unique g-measures have Bernoulli natural extensions. In particular, we obtain a unique g-measure that has the Bernoulli property for the full shift on finitely many states under any one of the following additional assumptions. (1) $$\sum_{n=1}^\infty (\var_n \log g)^2<\infty,$$ (2) For any fixed $ε>0$, $$\sum_{n=1}^\infty e^{-(\{1}{2}+ε) (\var_1 \log g+...+\var_n \log g)}=\infty,$$ (3) $$\var_n \log g=\ordo{\{1}{\sqrt{n}}}, \quad n\to \infty.$$ That the measure is Bernoulli in the case of (1) is new. In (2) we have an improved version of Berbee's condition (concerning uniqueness and Bernoullicity) [2], allowing the variations of log g to be essentially twice as large. Finally, (3) is an example that our main result is new both for uniqueness and for the Bernoulli property. We also conclude that we have convergence in the Wasserstein metric of the iterates of the adjoint transfer operator to the g-measure.

Topological dynamics of the Weil-Petersson geodesic flow

We prove topological transitivity for the Weil Petersson geodesic flow for two-dimensional moduli spaces of hyperbolic structures. Our proof follows a new approach that exploits the density of singular unit tangent vectors, the geometry of cusps and convexity properties of negative curvature. We also show that the Weil Petersson geodesic flow has: horseshoes, invariant sets with positive topological entropy, and that there are infinitely many hyperbolic closed geodesics, whose number grows exponentially in length. Furthermore, we note that the volume entropy is infinite.
