Homology manifolds via six functor formalisms

We study homology manifolds through the eyes of the six functor formalism of spectral sheaves on locally compact Hausdorff spaces. As main results, we characterize cohomologically smooth objects by adapting an argument of Scholze, deduce that any hypercomplete locally compact ANR homology manifold is cohomologically smooth, show that compact ANR homology manifolds $X$ are Poincar\'e duality complexes whose Spivak tangent fibration identifies with the dualizing sheaf of $X$, and prove a generalization of Wilder's monotone mapping theorem about cell-like maps. Moreover, we introduce the notion of homotopy manifolds for which we prove an unstable analog of Wilder's orientability conjecture and show that hypercomplete ANR homology manifolds are homotopy manifolds. As a consequence, we show that for a compact $d$-dimensional ANR homology manifold, the Spivak tangent fibration of its associated Poincar\'e duality complex canonically destabilizes to a pointed $S^d$-fibration. Finally, we introduce homotopy manifolds with conical singularities, a generalization of Cohen's triangulated homotopy manifolds, and show that such objects are in fact topological manifolds, generalizing a result of Siebenmann. Along the way, we obtain comparisons between sheaf and singular cohomology and between the shape and the weak homotopy type of a topological space, explore the relation between various notions of cohomological dimension and hypercompleteness, and study six functor formalisms satisfying the K\"unneth formula.

Towards the classification of DGAs with polynomial homology

We study the classification of $\mathbb{Z}$-DGAs with polynomial homology $\mathbb{F}_p[x]$ with $\lvert x \rvert >0$, motivated by computations in algebraic $K$-theory. This classification problem was left open in work of Dwyer, Greenlees, and Iyengar. We prove that there are infinitely many such DGAs for even $\lvert x \rvert$ and that for $\lvert x \rvert \geq 2p-2$ any such DGA is formal as a ring spectrum. Through this, we obtain examples of triangulated categories with infinitely many DG-enhancements and a classification of prime DG-division rings. Combining our results with earlier work of the second author and Tamme, we obtain new (relative) algebraic $K$-theory computations for rings such as the mixed characteristic coordinate axes $\mathbb{Z}[x]/px$ and the group ring $\mathbb{Z}[C_{p^n}]$.

Grothendieck-Witt theory of derived schemes

We construct a non-$\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant motivic ring spectrum $\mathrm{KO}$ over $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbb{Z})$, whose associated cohomology theory on qcqs derived schemes is the Grothendieck-Witt theory of classical symmetric forms (as opposed to homotopy symmetric forms). In particular, we show that this theory satisfies Nisnevich descent, smooth blowup excision, a projective bundle formula, and is locally left Kan extended from smooth $\mathbb{Z}$-schemes up to Bass delooping. More generally, our construction produces $\mathrm{KO}$-modules representing localizing invariants of two different families of Poincar\'e structures on derived schemes, which we call "classical" and "genuine"; the latter Poincar\'e structures are defined for spectral schemes with involution, but the former only for derived schemes. We then establish basic properties of these motivic spectra. As in $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory, the fracture square of $\mathrm{KO}$ with respect to the Hopf element recovers the fundamental cartesian square relating GW-theory, L-theory, and K-theory. A new phenomenon when $2$ is not a unit is that $\mathrm{KO}$ is not Bott-periodic, and the left and right Bott periodizations of $\mathrm{KO}$ represent the Grothendieck-Witt theories of homotopy symmetric and homotopy quadratic forms, respectively. We also construct the expected metalinear $\mathrm{E}_\infty$-orientation of $\mathrm{KO}$. Finally, we show that the $\mathbb{A}^1$-localization of $\mathrm{KO}$ recovers the motivic spectrum recently constructed by Calm\`es, Harpaz, and Nardin.

Formality of $\mathbb{E}_n$-algebras and cochains on spheres

We study the loop and suspension functors on the category of augmented $\mathbb{E}_n$-algebras. One application is to the formality of the cochain algebra of the $n$-sphere. We show that it is formal as an $\mathbb{E}_n$-algebra, also with coefficients in general commutative ring spectra, but rarely $\mathbb{E}_{n+1}$-formal unless the coefficients are rational. Along the way we show that the free functor from operads in spectra to monads in spectra is fully faithful on a nice subcategory of operads which in particular contains the stable $\mathbb{E}_n$-operads for finite $n$. We use this to interpret our results on loop and suspension functors of augmented algebras in operadic terms.

Homology manifolds and euclidean bundles

We construct a Poincar\'e complex whose periodic total surgery obstruction vanishes but whose Spivak normal fibration does not admit a reduction to a stable euclidean bundle. This contradicts the conjunction of two claims in the literature: Namely, on the one hand that a Poincar\'e complex with vanishing periodic total surgery obstruction is homotopy equivalent to a homology manifold, which appears in work of Bryant, Ferry, Mio and Weinberger, and on the other that the Spivak normal fibration of a homology manifold always admits a reduction to a stable euclidean bundle, which appears in work of Ferry and Pedersen.

A survey on operator $K$-theory via homotopical algebra

This is a survey article with the goal to advertise spectrum valued versions of $K$- and $KK$- theory for $C^{*}$-algebras via a (stable and symmetric monoidal) $\infty$-categorical enhancement of Kasparov's classical $KK$-theory. The main purpose is to present, in the simplest case, homotopy theoretic arguments for classical results on operator $K$-theory, including Swan's theorems, K\"unneth and universal coefficient formulas, the bootstrap class, variations of Karoubi's conjecture, and spectra of units for strongly self-absorbing $C^*$-algebras, as well as some new aspects on twisted $K$-theory and coherent multiplicative structures on $C^*$-algebras, viewed as objects in the previously mentioned $\infty$-category.

On the $K$-theory of pushouts

We reveal a relation between the behaviour of localizing invariants $E$ on pushouts and on pullbacks of ring spectra. More concretely, we show that the failure of $E$ sending a pushout of ring spectra to a pushout is controlled by the value of $E$ on a pullback of ring spectra. Vice versa, in many situations, we show that the failure $E$ of sending a pullback square to a pullback is controlled by the value of $E$ on a pushout of ring spectra. The latter can be interpreted as identifying the $\odot$-ring, introduced in earlier work of ours, as a pushout which turns out to be explicitly computable in many cases. This opens up new possibilities for direct computations. As further applications, we give new proofs of (generalizations) of Waldhausen's seminal results on the $K$-theory of generalized free products and obtain a general relation between the value of a localizing invariant on trivial square zero extensions and on tensor algebras.

L-theory of $C^*$-algebras

We establish a formula for the L-theory spectrum of real $C^*$-algebras from which we deduce a presentation of the L-groups in terms of the topological K-groups, extending all previously known results of this kind. Along the way, we extend the integral comparison map $\tau\colon \mathrm{k} \to \mathrm{L}$ obtained in previous work by the first two authors to real $C^*$-algebras and interpret it using topological Grothendieck-Witt theory. Finally, we use our results to give an integral comparison between the Baum-Connes conjecture and the L-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture, and discuss our comparison map $\tau$ in terms of the signature operator on oriented manifolds.

Gabber rigidity in hermitian K-theory

We note that Gabber's rigidity theorem for the algebraic K-theory of henselian pairs also holds true for hermitian K-theory with respect to arbitrary form parameters.

Remarks on chromatically localised hermitian K-theory

We describe chromatic localisations of genuine L-spectra of discrete rings and deduce that the purity property of $K(1)$-local $K$-theory of rings established by Bhatt-Clausen-Mathew also holds in Grothendieck-Witt theory. In addition, we collect some results on higher chromatic localisations of various L-theory spectra and their consequences for Grothendieck-Witt theory.

Paschke duality and assembly maps

We construct a natural transformation between two versions of $G$-equivariant $K$-homology with coefficients in a $G$-$C^{*}$-category for a countable discrete group $G$. Its domain is a coarse geometric $K$-homology and its target is the usual analytic $K$-homology. Following classical terminology, we call this transformation the Paschke transformation. We show that under certain finiteness assumptions on a $G$-space $X$, the Paschke transformation is an equivalence on $X$. As an application, we provide a direct comparison of the homotopy theoretic Davis-L\"uck assembly map with Kasparov's analytic assembly map appearing in the Baum-Connes conjecture.

A stable $\infty$-category for equivariant $KK$-theory

For a countable group $G$ we construct a small, idempotent complete, symmetric monoidal, stable $\infty$-category $\mathrm{KK}^{G}_{\mathrm{sep}}$ whose homotopy category recovers the triangulated equivariant Kasparov category of separable $G$-$C^*$-algebras, and exhibit its universal property. Likewise, we consider an associated presentably symmetric monoidal, stable $\infty$-category $\mathrm{KK}^{G}$ which receives a symmetric monoidal functor $\mathrm{kk}^{G}$ from possibly non-separable $G$-$C^*$-algebras and discuss its universal property. In addition to the symmetric monoidal structures, we construct various change-of-group functors relating these KK-categories for varying $G$. We use this to define and establish key properties of a (spectrum valued) equivariant, locally finite $K$-homology theory on proper and locally compact $G$-topological spaces, allowing for coefficients in arbitrary $G$-$C^*$-algebras. Finally, we extend the functor $\mathrm{kk}^{G}$ from $G$-$C^*$-algebras to $G$-$C^*$-categories. These constructions are key in a companion paper about a form of equivariant Paschke duality and assembly maps.

Hermitian K-theory for stable $\infty$-categories I: Foundations

This paper is the first in a series in which we offer a new framework for hermitian K-theory in the realm of stable $\infty$-categories. Our perspective yields solutions to a variety of classical problems involving Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings and clarifies the behaviour of these invariants when 2 is not invertible. In this article we lay the foundations of our approach by considering Lurie's notion of a Poincar\'e $\infty$-category, which permits an abstract counterpart of unimodular forms called Poincar\'e objects. We analyse the special cases of hyperbolic and metabolic Poincar\'e objects, and establish a version of Ranicki's algebraic Thom construction. For derived $\infty$-categories of rings, we classify all Poincar\'e structures and study in detail the process of deriving them from classical input, thereby locating the usual setting of forms over rings within our framework. We also develop the example of visible Poincar\'e structures on $\infty$-categories of parametrised spectra, recovering the visible signature of a Poincar\'e duality space. We conduct a thorough investigation of the global structural properties of Poincar\'e $\infty$-categories, showing in particular that they form a bicomplete, closed symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category. We also study the process of tensoring and cotensoring a Poincar\'e $\infty$-category over a finite simplicial complex, a construction featuring prominently in the definition of the L- and Grothendieck-Witt spectra that we consider in the next instalment. Finally, we define already here the 0-th Grothendieck-Witt group of a Poincar\'e $\infty$-category using generators and relations. We extract its basic properties, relating it in particular to the 0-th L- and algebraic K-groups, a relation upgraded in the second instalment to a fibre sequence of spectra which plays a key role in our applications.

Hermitian K-theory for stable $\infty$-categories II: Cobordism categories and additivity

We define Grothendieck-Witt spectra in the setting of Poincar\'e $\infty$-categories and show that they fit into an extension with a K- and an L-theoretic part. As consequences we deduce localisation sequences for Verdier quotients, and generalisations of Karoubi's fundamental and periodicity theorems for rings in which 2 need not be invertible. Our set-up allows for the uniform treatment of such algebraic examples alongside homotopy-theoretic generalisations: For example, the periodicity theorem holds for complex oriented $\mathrm{E}_1$-rings, and we show that the Grothendieck-Witt theory of parametrised spectra recovers Weiss and Williams' LA-theory. Our Grothendieck-Witt spectra are defined via a version of the hermitian Q-construction, and a novel feature of our approach is to interpret the latter as a cobordism category. This perspective also allows us to give a hermitian version -- along with a concise proof -- of the theorem of Blumberg, Gepner and Tabuada, and provides a cobordism theoretic description of the aforementioned LA-spectra.

Hermitian K-theory for stable $\infty$-categories III: Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings

We establish a fibre sequence relating the classical Grothendieck-Witt theory of a ring $R$ to the homotopy $\mathrm{C}_2$-orbits of its K-theory and Ranicki's original (non-periodic) symmetric L-theory. We use this fibre sequence to remove the assumption that 2 is a unit in $R$ from various results about Grothendieck-Witt groups. For instance, we solve the homotopy limit problem for Dedekind rings whose fraction field is a number field, calculate the various flavours of Grothendieck-Witt groups of $\mathbb{Z}$, show that the Grothendieck-Witt groups of rings of integers in number fields are finitely generated, and that the comparison map from quadratic to symmetric Grothendieck-Witt theory of Noetherian rings of global dimension $d$ is an equivalence in degrees $\geq d+3$. As an important tool, we establish the hermitian analogue of Quillen's localisation-d\'evissage sequence for Dedekind rings and use it to solve a conjecture of Berrick-Karoubi.

Topological 4-manifolds with 4-dimensional fundamental group

Let $\pi$ be a group satisfying the Farrell-Jones conjecture and assume that $B\pi$ is a 4-dimensional Poincar\'e duality space. We consider topological, closed, connected manifolds with fundamental group $\pi$ whose canonical map to $B\pi$ has degree 1 and show that two such manifolds are s-cobordant if and only if their equivariant intersection forms are isometric and they have the same Kirby-Siebenmann invariant. If $\pi$ is good in the sense of Freedman, it follows that two such manifolds are homeomorphic if and only if they are homotopy equivalent and have the same Kirby--Siebenmann invariant. This shows rigidity in many cases that lie between aspherical 4-manifolds, where rigidity is expected by Borel's conjecture, and simply connected manifolds where rigidity is a consequence of Freedman's classification results.

On the homotopy type of L-spectra of the integers

We show that quadratic and symmetric L-theory of the integers are related by Anderson duality and show that both spectra split integrally into the L-theory of the real numbers and a generalised Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum. As a consequence, we obtain a corresponding splitting of the space G/Top. Finally, we prove analogous results for the genuine L-spectra recently devised for the study of Grothendieck--Witt theory.

Purity in chromatically localized algebraic $K$-theory

We prove a purity property in telescopically localized algebraic $K$-theory of ring spectra: For $n\geq 1$, the $T(n)$-localization of $K(R)$ only depends on the $T(0)\oplus \dots \oplus T(n)$-localization of $R$. This complements a classical result of Waldhausen in rational $K$-theory. Combining our result with work of Clausen--Mathew--Naumann--Noel, one finds that $L_{T(n)}K(R)$ in fact only depends on the $T(n-1)\oplus T(n)$-localization of $R$, again for $n \geq 1$. As consequences, we deduce several vanishing results for telescopically localized $K$-theory, as well as an equivalence between $K(R)$ and $\mathrm{TC}(\tau_{\geq 0} R)$ after $T(n)$-localization for $n\geq 2$.
