Wasserstein recurrence networks for multiscale time series pattern analysis

Time series data are often generated by systems which operate on multiple temporal scales, of which Earth's climate system is a paramount example. Variations in global climate are recorded in paleo-environmental archives as temporal patterns across a wide range of time scales, from seasonal or decadal to multi-millennial. In this context, recurrence analysis, where repeating patterns are identified in time series, is limited by the underlying properties of the distance function used and of the time series data themselves, especially in terms of temporal resolution and scale dependence. In this paper, we present a novel recurrence analysis framework designed for multiscale time series data with abrupt changes and irregular temporal resolution as found in paleoclimate records. We introduce a simple mathematical transform to use the $1-$Wasserstein distance for recurring pattern detection in time series. The scale invariance of $1-$Wasserstein distance distributions between patterns in Brownian motion is demonstrated numerically, which provides a principled threshold choice for recurrences. At any time scale, recurrences are defined as local minima of the distance, granted that they are below a threshold given by the probability of encountering patterns at least as similar in one-dimensional Brownian motion. Recurrences can be further combined according to a non-overlapping condition to yield a distinct set of multiscale recurring events. We provide examples of climatic applications from ice-rafted debris and ice core records, where detected recurrences have durations spanning over two orders of magnitude. Our method extends recurrence analysis to more complex time series data and provides new avenues for statistical identification and analyses of recurring events at multiple temporal scales.

Human-centric Literature on Trust for SfTI Veracity Spearhead

This article summarizes the literature on trust of digital technologies from a human-centric perspective. We summarize literature on trust in face-to-face interactions from other fields, followed by a discussion of organizational trust, technology-mediated trust, trust of software products, trust of AI, and blockchain. This report was created for the Science for Technological Innovation Veracity Spearhead supported by New Zealand's National Science Challenges.

What does ChatGPT return about human values? Exploring value bias in ChatGPT using a descriptive value theory

There has been concern about ideological basis and possible discrimination in text generated by Large Language Models (LLMs). We test possible value biases in ChatGPT using a psychological value theory. We designed a simple experiment in which we used a number of different probes derived from the Schwartz basic value theory (items from the revised Portrait Value Questionnaire, the value type definitions, value names). We prompted ChatGPT via the OpenAI API repeatedly to generate text and then analyzed the generated corpus for value content with a theory-driven value dictionary using a bag of words approach. Overall, we found little evidence of explicit value bias. The results showed sufficient construct and discriminant validity for the generated text in line with the theoretical predictions of the psychological model, which suggests that the value content was carried through into the outputs with high fidelity. We saw some merging of socially oriented values, which may suggest that these values are less clearly differentiated at a linguistic level or alternatively, this mixing may reflect underlying universal human motivations. We outline some possible applications of our findings for both applications of ChatGPT for corporate usage and policy making as well as future research avenues. We also highlight possible implications of this relatively high-fidelity replication of motivational content using a linguistic model for the theorizing about human values.

When Coincidence has Meaning: Understanding Emergence Through Networks of Information Token Recurrence

In this paper I conceptualise a novel approach for capturing coincidences between events that have not necessarily an observed causal relationship. Building on the Transcendental Information Cascades approach I outline a tensor theory of the interaction between rare micro-level events and macro-level system changes. Afterwards, I discuss a number of application areas that are promising candidates for the validation of the theoretical assumptions outlined here in practice. This is preliminary work that is sought to lay the foundation to discover universal mathematical properties of coincidences that have a measurable impact on the macroscopic state of a complex system and are therefore to be considered meaningful.

Enriching Bibliographic Data by Combining String Matching and the Wikidata Knowledge Graph to Improve the Measurement of International Research Collaboration

Measuring international research collaboration is necessary when evaluating, for example, the efficacy of policy meant to increase cooperation between countries, but is currently very difficult as bibliographic records contain only affiliation data from which there is no standard method to identify the relevant countries. In this paper we describe a method to address this difficulty, and evaluate it using both general and domain-specific data sets.

You can't see what you can't see: Experimental evidence for how much relevant information may be missed due to Google's Web search personalisation

The influence of Web search personalisation on professional knowledge work is an understudied area. Here we investigate how public sector officials self-assess their dependency on the Google Web search engine, whether they are aware of the potential impact of algorithmic biases on their ability to retrieve all relevant information, and how much relevant information may actually be missed due to Web search personalisation. We find that the majority of participants in our experimental study are neither aware that there is a potential problem nor do they have a strategy to mitigate the risk of missing relevant information when performing online searches. Most significantly, we provide empirical evidence that up to 20% of relevant information may be missed due to Web search personalisation. This work has significant implications for Web research by public sector professionals, who should be provided with training about the potential algorithmic biases that may affect their judgments and decision making, as well as clear guidelines how to minimise the risk of missing relevant information.

What is online citizen science anyway? An educational perspective

In this paper we seek to contribute to the debate about the nature of citizen involvement in real scientific projects by the means of online tools that facilitate crowdsourcing and collaboration. We focus on an understudied area, the impact of online citizen science participation on the science education of school age children. We present a binary tree of online citizen science process flows and the results of an anonymous survey among primary school teachers in New Zealand that are known advocates of science education. Our findings reveal why teachers are interested in using online citizen science in classroom activities and what they are looking for when making their choice for a particular project to use. From these characteristics we derive recommendations for the optimal embedding of online citizen science in education related to the process, the context, and the dissemination of results.

Towards an Understanding of the Effects of Augmented Reality Games on Disaster Management

Location-based augmented reality games have entered the mainstream with the nearly overnight success of Niantic's Pok\'emon Go. Unlike traditional video games, the fact that players of such games carry out actions in the external, physical world to accomplish in-game objectives means that the large-scale adoption of such games motivate people, en masse, to do things and go places they would not have otherwise done in unprecedented ways. The social implications of such mass-mobilisation of individual players are, in general, difficult to anticipate or characterise, even for the short-term. In this work, we focus on disaster relief, and the short- and long-term implications that a proliferation of AR games like Pok\'emon Go, may have in disaster-prone regions of the world. We take a distributed cognition approach and focus on one natural disaster-prone region of New Zealand, the city of Wellington.

Collective Intelligence in Citizen Science -- A Study of Performers and Talkers

The recent emergence of online citizen science is illustrative of an efficient and effective means to harness the crowd in order to achieve a range of scientific discoveries. Fundamentally, citizen science projects draw upon crowds of non-expert volunteers to complete short Tasks, which can vary in domain and complexity. However, unlike most human-computational systems, participants in these systems, the `citizen scientists' are volunteers, whereby no incentives, financial or otherwise, are offered. Furthermore, encouraged by citizen science platforms such as Zooniverse, online communities have emerged, providing them with an environment to discuss, share ideas, and solve problems. In fact, it is the result of these forums that has enabled a number of scientific discoveries to be made. In this paper we explore the phenomenon of collective intelligence via the relationship between the activities of online citizen science communities and the discovery of scientific knowledge. We perform a cross-project analysis of ten Zooniverse citizen science projects and analyse the behaviour of users with regards to their Task completion activity and participation in discussion and discover collective behaviour amongst highly active users. Whilst our findings have implications for future citizen science design, we also consider the wider implications for understanding collective intelligence research in general.
