A generating functional for infrared-safe QED amplitudes

We construct a generating functional for infrared-finite scattering amplitudes in massive quantum electrodynamics (QED) by including Faddeev-Kulish dressings in a holomorphic coherent-state representation, in the spirit of the construction of Aref'eva-Faddeev-Slavnov (AFS) for the undressed Dyson S-matrix. At tree level, the dressed generating functional reduces to an AFS path integral with dressed boundary conditions.

Flat Holography & Holographic Renormalization: Scalar Field

We adapt the Hamilton-Jacobi method of holographic renormalization to scalar field theories in Minkowski spacetime with scattering boundary conditions. The approach yields a flat-space holographic dictionary in which the expectation value of a dual operator is given by the renormalized canonical momentum. The source of the operator is imposed as a Dirichlet condition in a radial timelike foliation of the bulk theory and corresponds to the scattering data appearing in the Arefeva-Faddeev-Slavnov generating functional. We initiate a study of massive scalars and interacting fields within this formalism and we comment on extensions to different bulk theories and backgrounds.

A Holographic prescription for generalized Schwinger-Keldysh contours

We provide a holographic prescription to compute real-time thermal correlators with arbitrary operator ordering. In field theory, these correlation functions are captured by a multi-fold Schwinger-Keldysh time contour. We propose a holographic dual for these contours, which generalizes the gravitational Schwinger-Keldysh geometry previously advocated in the literature. Our geometry consists of multiple AdS-black holes glued together at the future and past horizons, with matching conditions determined by unitarity and the KMS condition. As a proof of concept, we solve for a probe scalar field in this geometry and compute bulk-bulk and bulk-boundary propagators, in terms of which we evaluate the 4-point functions at tree-level. We show that in perturbation theory, the lowest-order diagrams that contribute non-trivially to the out-of-time order four-point function are exchange diagrams which explore the full four-fold geometry. Furthermore, these diagrams reduce to a simple factorized expression. We propose a conjecture on the structure of higher order observables and provide a partial proof by studying a subset of the contributing diagrams.

Thermal $n$-Point Conformal Blocks in Four Dimensions from Oscillator Representations

We define and compute the four-dimensional thermal $n$-point conformal block in the projection channel using oscillator representations on $\mathbb{S}^1_\beta \times \mathbb{S}^3$. This is done by evaluating a class of integrals over the homogeneous space $\mathbb{D}_4$ of the four-dimensional conformal group. We restrict ourselves to scalar external operators and scalar exchange. In the low-temperature limit, our result reduces correctly to the vacuum $(n+2)$-point block in the comb channel. The corresponding expressions can be written as a series of terminating hypergeometric functions or equivalently, a series of weighted SU(2) spin-networks. Alternatively, functions adapted to the SU(2,2) representation are introduced and some properties are discussed.

Strongly interacting matter in extreme magnetic fields

Magnetic fields are ubiquitous across different physical systems of current interest; from the early Universe, compact astrophysical objects and heavy-ion collisions to condensed matter systems. A proper treatment of the effects produced by magnetic fields during the dynamical evolution of these systems, can help to understand observables that otherwise show a puzzling behavior. Furthermore, when these fields are comparable to or stronger than \Lambda_QCD, they serve as excellent probes to help elucidate the physics of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions of temperature and density. In this work we provide a comprehensive review of recent developments on the description of QED and QCD systems where magnetic field driven effects are important. These include the modification of meson static properties such as masses and form factors, the chiral magnetic effect, the description of anomalous transport coefficients, superconductivity in extreme magnetic fields, the properties of neutron stars, the evolution of heavy-ion collisions, as well as effects on the QCD phase diagram. We describe recent theory and phenomenological developments using effective models as well as LQCD methods. The work represents a state-of-the-art review of the field, motivated by presentations and discussions during the "Workshop on Strongly Interacting Matter in Strong Electromagnetic Fields" that took place in the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*) in the city of Trento, Italy, September 25-29, 2023.

Conformal Blocks in Two and Four Dimensions from Oscillator Representations

The explicit computation of higher-point conformal blocks in any dimension is usually a challenging task. For two-dimensional conformal field theories in Euclidean signature, the oscillator formalism proves to be very efficient. We demonstrate this by reproducing the general $n$-point global conformal block in the comb channel in an elegant and direct manner. Exploiting similarities to the representation theory of two-dimensional CFTs, we extend the oscillator formalism to the computation of higher-point conformal blocks in four Euclidean dimensions. As a proof of concept, we explicitly compute the scalar four-point block with scalar exchange within this framework and discuss the extension to the higher-point case.

Unfolded Fierz-Pauli Equations in Three-Dimensional Asymptotically Flat Spacetimes

We utilise a quotient of the universal enveloping algebra of the Poincar\'e algebra in three spacetime dimensions, on which we formulate a covariant constancy condition. The equations so obtained contain the Fierz-Pauli equations for non-interacting, massive higher-spin fields, and can thus be regarded as an unfolding of the Fierz-Pauli system. All fundamental fields completely decouple from each other. In the non-truncated case, the field content includes infinitely many copies of each field at fixed spin.

Pseudo-spontaneous $U(1)$ Symmetry Breaking in Hydrodynamics and Holography

We investigate the low-energy dynamics of systems with pseudo-spontaneously broken $U(1)$ symmetry and Goldstone phase relaxation. We construct a hydrodynamic framework which is able to capture these, in principle independent, effects. We consider two generalisations of the standard holographic superfluid model by adding an explicit breaking of the $U(1)$ symmetry by either sourcing the charged bulk scalar or by introducing an explicit mass term for the bulk gauge field. We find agreement between the hydrodynamic dispersion relations and the quasi-normal modes of both holographic models. We verify that phase relaxation arises only due to the breaking of the inherent Goldstone shift symmetry. The interplay of a weak explicit breaking of the $U(1)$ and phase relaxation renders the DC electric conductivity finite but does not result in a Drude-like peak. In this scenario we show the validity of a universal relation, found in the context of translational symmetry breaking, between the phase relaxation rate, the mass of the pseudo-Goldstone and the Goldstone diffusivity.

Chiral hydrodynamics in strong external magnetic fields

We construct the general hydrodynamic description of (3+1)-dimensional chiral charged (quantum) fluids subject to a strong external magnetic field with effective field theory methods. We determine the constitutive equations for the energy-momentum tensor and the axial charge current, in part from a generating functional. Furthermore, we derive the Kubo formulas which relate two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and charge current to 27 transport coefficients: 8 independent thermodynamic, 4 independent non-dissipative hydrodynamic, and 10 independent dissipative hydrodynamic transport coefficients. Five Onsager relations render 5 more transport coefficients dependent. We uncover four novel transport effects, which are encoded in what we call the shear-induced conductivity, the two expansion-induced longitudinal conductivities and the shear-induced Hall conductivity. Remarkably, the shear-induced Hall conductivity constitutes a novel non-dissipative transport effect. As a demonstration, we compute all transport coefficients explicitly in a strongly coupled quantum fluid via holography.

Semi-classical BMS-blocks from the Oscillator Construction

Flat-space holography requires a thorough understanding of BMS symmetry. We introduce an oscillator construction of the highest-weight representation of the $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ algebra and show that it is consistent with known results concerning the $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ module. We take advantage of this framework to prove that $\mathfrak{bms}_3$-blocks exponentiate in the semi-classical limit, where one of the central charges is large. Within this context, we compute perturbatively heavy, and heavy-light vacuum $\mathfrak{bms}_3$-blocks.

Scalar Fields in 3D Asymptotically Flat Higher-Spin Gravity

In this work we construct a novel associative algebra and use it to define a theory of higher-spin gravity in (2+1)-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes. Our construction is based on a quotient of the universal enveloping algebra (UEA) of $\mathfrak{isl}(2,\mathbb{R})$ with respect to the ideal generated by its Casimir elements, the mass squared $\mathcal{M}^2$ and the three-dimensional analogue of the square of the Pauli-Lubanski vector $\mathcal{S}$ and propose to call the resulting associative algebra $\mathfrak{ihs}(\mathcal{M}^2,\mathcal{S})$. We provide a definition of its generators and even though we are not yet able to provide the complete set of multiplication rules of this algebra our analysis allows us to study many interesting and relevant sub-structures of $\mathfrak{ihs}(\mathcal{M}^2,\mathcal{S})$. We then show how to consistently couple a scalar field to an $\mathfrak{ihs}(\mathcal{M}^2,\mathcal{S})$ higher-spin gauge theory.

On the Hydrodynamic Description of Holographic Viscoelastic Models

We show that the correct dual hydrodynamic description of homogeneous holographic models with spontaneously broken translations must include the so-called "strain pressure" -- a novel transport coefficient proposed recently. Taking this new ingredient into account, we investigate the near-equilibrium dynamics of a large class of holographic models and faithfully reproduce all the hydrodynamic modes present in the quasinormal mode spectrum. Moreover, while strain pressure is characteristic of equilibrium configurations which do not minimise the free energy, we argue and show that it also affects models with no background strain, through its temperature derivatives. In summary, we provide a first complete matching between the holographic models with spontaneously broken translations and their effective hydrodynamic description.

Longitudinal Sound and Diffusion in Holographic Massive Gravity

We consider a simple class of holographic massive gravity models for which the dual field theories break translational invariance spontaneously. We study, in detail, the longitudinal sector of the quasi-normal modes at zero charge density. We identify three hydrodynamic modes in this sector: a pair of sound modes and one diffusion mode. We numerically compute the dispersion relations of the hydrodynamic modes. The obtained speed and the attenuation of the sound modes are in agreement with the hydrodynamic predictions. On the contrary, we surprisingly find disagreement in the case of the diffusive mode; its diffusion constant extracted from the quasi-normal mode data does not agree with the expectations from hydrodynamics. We confirm our numerical results using analytic tools in the decoupling limit and we comment on some possible reasons behind the disagreement. Finally, we extend the analysis of the collective longitudinal modes beyond the hydrodynamic limit by displaying the dynamics of the higher quasi-normal modes at large frequencies and momenta.

A Unified Description of Translational Symmetry Breaking in Holography

We provide a complete and unified description of translational symmetry breaking in a simple holographic model. In particular, we focus on the distinction and the interplay between explicit and spontaneous breaking. We consider a class of holographic massive gravity models which allow to range continuously from one situation to the other. We study the collective degrees of freedom, the electric AC conductivity and the shear correlator in function of the explicit and spontaneous scales. We show the possibility of having a sound-to-diffusion crossover for the transverse phonons. Within our model, we verify the validity of the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation. Despite of strong evidence for the absence of any standard dislocation induced phase relaxation mechanism, we identify a novel relaxation scale controlled by the ratio between the explicit and spontaneous breaking scales. Finally, in the pseudo-spontaneous limit, we prove analytically the relation, which has been discussed in the literature, between this novel relaxation scale, the mass of the pseudo-phonons and the Goldstone diffusivity. Our numerical data confirms this analytic result.

Notes on ten-dimensional localized black holes and deconfined states in two-dimensional SYM

We numerically construct static localized black holes in ten spacetime dimensions with one compact periodic dimension. In particular, we investigate the critical regime in which the poles of the localized black hole are about to merge. When approaching the critical region, the behavior of physical quantities is described by a single real valued exponent giving rise to a logarithmic scaling of the thermodynamic quantities, in agreement with the theoretical prediction derived from the double-cone metric. As a peculiarity, the localized black hole solution in ten dimensions can be related to the spatially deconfined phase of two dimensional N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on a spatial circle. We use the localized black hole solutions to determine the SYM phase diagram. In particular, we compute the location of the first order phase confinement/deconfinement transition and the related latent heat to unprecedented accuracy.

A smeared quantum phase transition in disordered holography

We study the effects of quenched one-dimensional disorder on the holographic Weyl semimetal quantum phase transition (QPT), with a particular focus on the quantum critical region. We observe the smearing of the sharp QPT linked to the appearance of rare regions at the horizon where locally the order parameter is non-zero. We discuss the role of the disorder correlation and we compare our results to expectations from condensed matter theory at weak coupling. We analyze also the interplay of finite temperature and disorder. Within the quantum critical region we find indications for the presence of log-oscillatory structures in the order parameter hinting at the existence of an IR fixed point with discrete scale invariance.

Holographic Phonons

We present a class of holographic massive gravity models that realize a spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry - they exhibit transverse phonon modes whose speed relates to the elastic shear modulus according to elasticity theory. Massive gravity theories thus emerge as versatile and convenient theories to model generic types of translational symmetry breaking: explicit, spontaneous and a mixture of both. The nature of the breaking is encoded in the radial dependence of the graviton mass. As an application of the model, we compute the temperature dependence of the shear modulus and find that it features a glass-like melting transition.

Holographic quenches and anomalous transport

We study the response of the chiral magnetic effect due to continuous quenches induced by time dependent electric fields within holography. Concretely, we consider a holographic model with dual chiral anomaly and compute the electric current parallel to a constant, homogeneous magnetic field and a time dependent electric field in the probe approximation. We explicitly solve the PDEs by means of pseudospectral methods in spatial and time directions and study the transition to an universal "fast" quench response. Moreover, we compute the amplitudes, i.e.,~residues of the quasi normal modes, by solving the (ODE) Laplace transformed equations. We investigate the possibility of considering the asymptotic growth rate of the amplitudes as a well defined notion of initial time scale for linearized systems. Finally, we highlight the existence of Landau level resonances in the electrical conductivity parallel to a magnetic field at finite frequency and show explicitly that these only appear in presence of the anomaly. We show that the existence of these resonances induces, among others, a long-lived AC electric current once the electric field is switched off.
