The Low-Dimensional Algebraic Cohomology of the Virasoro Algebra

The main aim of this article is to prove the one-dimensionality of the third algebraic cohomology of the Virasoro algebra with values in the adjoint module. We announced this result in a previous publication with only a sketch of the proof. The detailed proof is provided in the present article. We also show that the third algebraic cohomology of the Witt and the Virasoro algebra with values in the trivial module is one-dimensional. We consider purely algebraic cohomology, i.e. our results are independent of any topology chosen. The vanishing of the third algebraic cohomology of the Witt algebra with values in the adjoint module has already been proven by Ecker and Schlichenmaier.

The Vanishing of the Low-Dimensional Cohomology of the Witt and the Virasoro algebra

A proof of the vanishing of the third cohomology group of the Witt algebra with values in the adjoint module is given. Moreover, we provide a sketch of the proof of the one-dimensionality of the third cohomology group of the Virasoro algebra with values in the adjoint module. The proofs given in the present article are completely algebraic and independent of any underlying topology. They are a generalization of the ones provided by Schlichenmaier, who proved the vanishing of the second cohomology group of the Witt and the Virasoro algebra by using purely algebraic methods. In the case of the third cohomology group though, extra difficulties arise and the involved proofs are distinctly more complicated. The first cohomology group can easily be computed; we will give an explicit proof of its vanishing in the appendix, in order to illustrate our techniques.

$N$-point Virasoro algebras are multi-point Krichever--Novikov type algebras

We show how the recently again discussed $N$-point Witt, Virasoro, and affine Lie algebras are genus zero examples of the multi-point versions of Krichever--Novikov type algebras as introduced and studied by Schlichenmaier. Using this more general point of view, useful structural insights and an easier access to calculations can be obtained. The concept of almost-grading will yield information about triangular decompositions which are of importance in the theory of representations. As examples the algebra of functions, vector fields, differential operators, current algebras, affine Lie algebras, Lie superalgebras and their central extensions are studied. Very detailed calculations for the three-point case are given.

Multipoint Lax operator algebras. Almost-graded structure and central extensions

Recently, Lax operator algebras appeared as a new class of higher genus current type algebras. Based on I.Krichever's theory of Lax operators on algebraic curves they were introduced by I. Krichever and O. Sheinman. These algebras are almost-graded Lie algebras of currents on Riemann surfaces with marked points (in-points, out-points, and Tyurin points). In a previous joint article of the author with Sheinman the local cocycles and associated almost-graded central extensions are classified in the case of one in-point and one out-point. It was shown that the almost-graded extension is essentially unique. In this article the general case of Lax operator algebras corresponding to several in- and out-points is considered. In a first step it is shown that they are almost-graded. The grading is given by the splitting of the marked points which are non-Tyurin points into in- and out-points. Next, classification results both for local and bounded cocycles are shown. The uniqueness theorem for almost-graded central extensions follows. For this generalization additional techniques are needed which are presented in this article.

Lie superalgebras of Krichever-Novikov type and their central extensions

Classically important examples of Lie superalgebras have been constructed starting from the Witt and Virasoro algebra. In this article we consider Lie superalgebras of Krichever-Novikov type. These algebras are multi-point and higher genus equivalents. The grading in the classical case is replaced by an almost-grading. The almost-grading is determined by a splitting of the set of points were poles are allowed into two disjoint subsets. With respect to a fixed splitting, or equivalently with respect to an almost-grading, it is shown that there is up to rescaling and equivalence a unique non-trivial central extension. It is given explicitly. Furthermore, a complete classification of bounded cocycles (with respect to the almost-grading) is given.

From the Virasoro Algebra to Krichever--Novikov Type Algebras and Beyond

Starting from the Virasoro algebra and its relatives the generalization to higher genus compact Riemann surfaces was initiated by Krichever and Novikov. The elements of these algebras are meromorphic objects which are holomorphic outside a finite set of points. A crucial and non-trivial point is to establish an almost-grading replacing the honest grading in the Virasoro case. Such an almost-grading is given by splitting the set of points of possible poles into two non-empty disjoint subsets. Krichever and Novikov considered the two-point case. Schlichenmaier studied the most general multi-point situation with arbitrary splittings. Here we will review the path of developments from the Virasoro algebra to its higher genus and multi-point analogs. The starting point will be a Poisson algebra structure on the space of meromorphic forms of all weights. As sub-structures the vector field algebras, function algebras, Lie superalgebras and the related current algebras show up. All these algebras will be almost-graded. In detail almost-graded central extensions are classified. In particular, for the vector field algebra it is essentially unique. The defining cocycle are given in geometric terms. Some applications, including the semi-infinite wedge form representations are recalled. Finally, some remarks on the by Krichever and Sheinman recently introduced Lax operator algebras are made.

Berezin-Toeplitz Quantization and Star Products for Compact Kaehler Manifolds

For compact quantizable Kähler manifolds certain naturally defined star products and their constructions are reviewed. The presentation centers around the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization scheme which is explained. As star products the Berezin-Toeplitz, Berezin, and star product of geometric quantization are treated in detail. It is shown that all three are equivalent. A prominent role is played by the Berezin transform and its asymptotic expansion. A few ideas on two general constructions of star products of separation of variables type by Karabegov and by Bordemann--Waldmann respectively are given. Some of the results presented is work of the author partly joint with Martin Bordemann, Eckhard Meinrenken and Alexander Karabegov. At the end some works which make use of graphs in the construction and calculation of these star products

An elementary proof of the vanishing of the second cohomology of the Witt and Virasoro algebra with values in the adjoint module

By elementary and direct calculations the vanishing of the (algebraic) second Lie algebra cohomology of the Witt and the Virasoro algebra with values in the adjoint module is shown. This yields infinitesimal and formal rigidity or these algebras. The first (and up to now only) proof of this important result was given 1989 by Fialowski in an unpublished note. It is based on cumbersome calculations. Compared to the original proof the presented one is quite elegant and considerably simpler.

Almost-graded central extensions of Lax operator algebra

Lax operator algebras constitute a new class of infinite dimensional Lie algebras of geometric origin. More precisely, they are algebras of matrices whose entries are meromorphic functions on a compact Riemann surface. They generalize classical current algebras and current algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. Lax operators for $\gl(n)$, with the spectral parameter on a Riemann surface, were introduced by Krichever. In joint works of Krichever and Sheinman their algebraic structure was revealed and extended to more general groups. These algebras are almost-graded. In this article their definition is recalled and classification and uniqueness results for almost-graded central extensions for this new class of algebras are presented. The explicit forms of the defining cocycles are given. If the finite-dimensional Lie algebra on which the Lax operator algebra is based is simple then, up to equivalence and rescaling of the central element, there is a unique non-trivial almost-graded central extension. These results are joint work with Oleg Sheinman. This is an extended write-up of a talk presented at the 5 th Baltic-Nordic AGMP Workshop: Bedlewo, 12-16 October, 2009

Berezin-Toeplitz quantization for compact Kaehler manifolds. A Review of Results

This article is a review on Berezin-Toeplitz operator and Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization for compact quantizable Kaehler manifolds. The basic objects, concepts, and results are given. This concerns the correct semi-classical limit behaviour of the operator quantization, the unique Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization (star product), covariant and contravariant Berezin symbols, and Berezin transform. Other related objects and constructions are also discussed.

Central extensions of Lax operator algebras

Lax operator algebras were introduced by Krichever and Sheinman as a further development of I.Krichever's theory of Lax operators on algebraic curves. These are almost-graded Lie algebras of current type. In this article local cocycles and associated almost-graded central extensions are classified. It is shown that in the case that the corresponding finite-dimensional Lie algebra is simple the two-cohomology space is one-dimensional. An important role is played by the action of the Lie algebra of meromorphic vector fields on the Lax operator algebra via suitable covariant derivatives.

Global Geometric Deformations of the Virasoro algebra, current and affine algebras by Krichever-Novikov type algebra

In two earlier articles we constructed algebraic-geometric families of genus one (i.e. elliptic) Lie algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. The considered algebras are vector fields, current and affine Lie algebras. These families deform the Witt algebra, the Virasoro algebra, the classical current, and the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras respectively. The constructed families are not equivalent (not even locally) to the trivial families, despite the fact that the classical algebras are formally rigid. This effect is due to the fact that the algebras are infinite dimensional. In this article the results are reviewed and developed further. The constructions are induced by the geometric process of degenerating the elliptic curves to singular cubics. The algebras are of relevance in the global operator approach to the Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov models appearing in the quantization of Conformal Field Theory.

Higher Genus Affine Lie Algebras of Krichever -- Novikov Type

Classical affine Lie algebras appear e.g. as symmetries of infinite dimensional integrable systems and are related to certain differential equations. They are central extensions of current algebras associated to finite-dimensional Lie algebras g. In geometric terms these current algebras might be described as Lie algebra valued meromorphic functions on the Riemann sphere with two possible poles. They carry a natural grading. In this talk the generalization to higher genus compact Riemann surfaces and more poles is reviewed. In case that the Lie algebra g is reductive (e.g. g is simple, semi-simple, abelian, ...) a complete classification of (almost-) graded central extensions is given. In particular, for g simple there exists a unique non-trivial (almost-)graded extension class. The considered algebras are related to difference equations, special functions and play a role in Conformal Field Theory.

Global geometric deformations of current algebras as Krichever-Novikov type algebras

We construct algebraic-geometric families of genus one (i.e. elliptic) current and affine Lie algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. These families deform the classical current, respectively affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. The construction is induced by the geometric process of degenerating the elliptic curve to singular cubics. If the finite-dimensional Lie algebra defining the infinite dimensional current algebra is simple then, even if restricted to local families, the constructed families are non-equivalent to the trivial family. In particular, we show that the current algebra is geometrically not rigid, despite its formal rigidity. This shows that in the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra case the relations between geometric deformations, formal deformations and Lie algebra two-cohomology are not that close as in the finite-dimensional case. The constructed families are e.g. of relevance in the global operator approach to the Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov models appearing in the quantization of Conformal Field Theory.

The Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov theory, Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, and Krichever-Novikov algebras, II

This paper continues the same-named article, Part I (math.QA/9812083). We give a global operator approach to the WZWN theory for compact Riemann surfaces of an arbitrary genus g with marked points. Globality means here that we use Krichever-Novikov algebras of gauge and conformal symmetries (i.e. algebras of global symmetries) instead of loop and Virasoro algebras (which are local in this context). The elements of this global approach are described in Part I. In the present paper we give the construction of conformal blocks and the projective flat connection on the bundle constituted by them.

Local cocycles and central extensions for multi-point algebras of Krichever-Novikov type

Multi-point algebras of Krichever Novikov type for higher genus Riemann surfaces are generalisations of the Virasoro algebra and its related algebras. Complete existence and uniqueness results for local 2-cocycles defining almost-graded central extensions of the functions algebra, the vector field algebra, and the differential operator algebra (of degree \le 1) are shown. This is applied to the higher genus, multi-point affine algebras to obtain uniqueness for almost-graded central extensions of the current algebra of a simple finite-dimensional Lie algebra. An earlier conjecture of the author concerning the central extension of the differential operator algebra induced by the semi-infinite wedge representations is proved.

Global Deformations of the Witt Algebra of Krichever-Novikov Type

By considering non-trivial global deformations of the Witt (and the Virasoro) algebra given by geometric constructions it is shown that, despite their infinitesimal and formal rigidity, they are globally not rigid. This shows the need of a clear indication of the type of deformations considered. The families appearing are constructed as families of algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. They show up in a natural way in the global operator approach to the quantization of two-dimensional conformal field theory. In addition, a proof of the infinitesimal and formal rigidity of the Witt algebra is presented.

Higher genus affine algebras of Krichever - Novikov type

For higher genus multi-point current algebras of Krichever-Novikov type associated to a finite-dimensional Lie algebra, local Lie algebra two-cocycles are studied. They yield as central extensions almost-graded higher genus affine Lie algebras. In case that the Lie algebra is reductive a complete classification is given. For a simple Lie algebra, like in the classical situation, there is up to equivalence and rescaling only one non-trivial almost-graded central extension. The classification is extended to the algebras of meromorphic differential operators of order less or equal one on the currents algebra.
