We use a natural affine connection with nontrivial torsion on an arbitrary almost-Kaehler manifold which respects the almost-Kaehler structure to construct a Fedosov-type deformation quantization on this manifold.

Berezin-Toeplitz quantization and Berezin transform

In this lecture results on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of arbitrary compact quantizable Kaehler manifolds are presented. These results are obtained in joint work with M. Bordemann and E. Meinrenken. The existence of the Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization is also covered. Recent results obtained in joint work with A. Karabegov on the asymptotic expansion of the Berezin transform for arbitrary quantizable compact Kaehler manifolds are explained. As an application the asymptotic expansion of the Fubini-Study fundamental form under the coherent state embedding is considered. Some comments on the dynamics of the quantum operators are given. (This is an extended write-up of an invited lecture presented at the workshop ``Asymptotic properties of time evolutions in classical and quantum systems'', September 13-17, 1999, Bologna, Italy.)

Identification of Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization

We give a complete identification of the deformation quantization which was obtained from the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization on an arbitrary compact Kaehler manifold. The deformation quantization with the opposite star-product proves to be a differential deformation quantization with separation of variables whose classifying form is explicitly calculated. Its characteristic class (which classifies star-products up to equivalence) is obtained. The proof is based on the microlocal description of the Szegoe kernel of a strictly pseudoconvex domain given by Boutet de Monvel and Sjoestrand.

Singular projective varieties and quantization

By the quantization condition compact quantizable Kaehler manifolds can be embedded into projective space. In this way they become projective varieties. The quantum Hilbert space of the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization (and of the geometric quantization) is the projective coordinate ring of the embedded manifold. This allows for generalization to the case of singular varieties. The set-up is explained in the first part of the contribution. The second part of the contribution is of tutorial nature. Necessary notions, concepts, and results of algebraic geometry appearing in this approach to quantization are explained. In particular, the notions of projective varieties, embeddings, singularities, and quotients appearing in geometric invariant theory are recalled.

Elements of a Global Operator Approach to Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten Models

Elements of a global operator approach to the WZNW models for compact Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus g with N marked points were given by Schlichenmaier and Sheinman. This contribution reports on the results. The approach is based on the multi-point Krichever-Novikov algebras of global meromorphic functions and vector fields, and the global algebras of affine type and their representations. Using the global Sugawara construction and the identification of a certain subspace of the vector field algebra with the tangent space to the moduli space of the geometric data, Knizhnik-Zamalodchikov equations are defined. Some steps of the approach of Tsuchia, Ueno and Yamada to WZNW models are presented to compare it with our approach.

Berezin-Toeplitz quantization and Berezin symbols for arbitrary compact Kaehler manifolds

For phase-space manifolds which are compact Kaehler manifolds relations between the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization and the quantization with the help of Berezin's coherent states and symbols are studied. First the results on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of arbitrary compact Kaehler manifolds due to Bordemann, Meinrenken and Schlichenmaier are recalled. It is shown that the covariant symbol map is adjoint to the Toeplitz map. The Berezin transform for compact Kaehler manifolds is discussed. Coherent state embeddings, polar divisors and Cauchy formulas

For arbitrary quantizable compact Kaehler manifolds, relations between the geometry given by the coherent states based on the manifold and the algebraic (projective) geometry realised via the coherent state mapping into projective space, are studied. Polar divisors, formulas relating the scalar products of coherent vectors on the manifold with the corresponding scalar products on projective space (Cauchy formulas), two-point, three-point and more generally cyclic m-point functions are discussed. The three-point function is related to the shape invariant of geodesic triangles in projective space.

Deformation quantization of compact Kaehler manifolds by Berezin-Toeplitz quantization

For arbitrary compact quantizable Kaehler manifolds it is shown how a natural formal deformation quantization (star product) can be obtained via Berezin-Toeplitz operators. Results on their semi-classical behaviour (their asymptotic expansion) due to Bordemann, Meinrenken and Schlichenmaier are used in an essential manner. It is shown that the star product is null on constants and fulfills parity. A trace is constructed and the relation to deformation quantization by geometric quantization is given.

The Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov theory, Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, and Krichever-Novikov algebras, I

Elements of a global operator approach to the WZWN theory for compact Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus $g$ are given. Sheaves of representations of affine Krichever-Novikov algebras over a dense open subset of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces (respectively of smooth, projective complex curves) with $N$ marked points are introduced. It is shown that the tangent space of the moduli space at an arbitrary moduli point is isomorphic to a certain subspace of the Krichever-Novikov vector field algebra given by the data of the moduli point. This subspace is complementary to the direct sum of the two subspaces containing the vector fields which vanish at the marked points, respectively which are regular at a fixed reference point. For each representation of the affine algebra $3g-3+N$ equations $(\partial_k+T[e_k])Φ=0$ are given, where the elements $\{e_k\}$ are a basis of the subspace, and $T$ is the affine Sugawara representation of the centrally extended vector field algebra. For genus zero one obtains the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations in this way. The coefficients of the equations for genus one are found in terms of Weierstraß-$σ$ function.

Sugawara Construction for Higher Genus Riemann Surfaces

By the classical genus zero Sugawara construction one obtains from admissible representations of affine Lie algebras (Kac-Moody algebras of affine type) representations of the Virasoro algebra. In this lecture first the classical construction is recalled. Then, after giving a review on the global multi-point algebras of Krichever-Novikov type for compact Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus, the higher genus Sugawara construction is introduced. Finally, the lecture reports on results obtained in joint work with O.K. Sheinman. We were able to show that also in the higher genus, multi-point situation one obtains from representations of the global algebras of affine type representations of a centrally extended algebra of meromorphic vector fields on Riemann surfaces. The latter algebra is the generalization of the Virasoro algebra to higher genus. Invited lecture at the XVI${}^{th}$ workshop on geometric methods in physics, Bialowieza, Poland, June 30 -- July 6, 1997.

Deformation quantization of compact Kähler manifolds via Berezin-Toeplitz operators

This talk reports on results on the deformation quantization (star products) and on approximative operator representations for quantizable compact K"ahler manifolds obtained via Berezin-Toeplitz operators. After choosing a holomorphic quantum line bundle the Berezin-Toeplitz operator associated to a differentiable function on the manifold is the operator defined by multiplying global holomorphic sections of the line bundle with this function and projecting the differentiable section back to the subspace of holomorphic sections. The results were obtained in (respectively based on) joint work with M. Bordemann and E. Meinrenken. (Talk at the XXI Int. Coll. on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics, 15-20 July, Goslar, Germany)

Berezin-Toeplitz Quantization of compact Kaehler manifolds

Invited lecture at the XIV-th workshop on geometric methods in physics, Bialowieza, Poland, July 9-15, 1995. In this lecture results are reviewed obtained by the author together with Martin Bordemann and Eckhard Meinrenken on the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of compact Kaehler manifolds. Using global Toeplitz operators, approximation results for the quantum operators are shown. From them it follows that the quantum operators have the correct classical limit. A star product deformation of the Poisson algebra is constructed.

Sugawara Construction and Casimir Operators for Krichever-Novikov Algebras

We show how to obtain from highest weight representations of Krichever-Novikov algebras of affine type (also called higher genus affine Kac-Moody algebras) representations of centrally extended Krichever-Novikov vector field algebras via the Sugawara construction. This generalizes classical results where one obtains representations of the Virasoro algebra. Relations between the weights of the corresponding representations are given and Casimir operators are constructed. In an appendix the Sugawara construction for the multi-point situation is done.

Some Concepts of Modern Algebraic Geometry: Point, Ideal and Homomorphism

Starting from classical algebraic geometry over the complex numbers (as it can be found for example in Griffiths and Harris it was the goal of these lectures to introduce some concepts of the modern point of view in algebraic geometry. Of course, it was quite impossible even to give an introduction to the whole subject in such a limited time. For this reason the lectures and now the write-up concentrate on the substitution of the concept of classical points by the notion of ideals and homomorphisms of algebras.

Toeplitz Quantization of Kähler Manifolds and $gl(N)$ $N\to\infty$

For general compact Kähler manifolds it is shown that both Toeplitz quantization and geometric quantization lead to a well-defined (by operator norm estimates) classical limit. This generalizes earlier results of the authors and Klimek and Lesniewski obtained for the torus and higher genus Riemann surfaces, respectively. We thereby arrive at an approximation of the Poisson algebra by a sequence of finite-dimensional matrix algebras $gl(N)$, $N\to\infty$.

Differential Operator Algebras on compact Riemann Surfaces

Invited talk at the International Symposium on Generalized Symmetries in Physics at the Arnold-Sommerfeld-Institute, Clausthal, Germany, July 26 -- July 29, 1993. This talk reviews results on the structure of algebras consisting of meromorphic differential operators which are holomorphic outside a finite set of points on compact Riemann surfaces. For each partition into two disjoint subsets of the set of points where poles are allowed, a grading of the algebra and of the modules of lambda - forms is introduced. With respect to this grading the Lie structure of the algebra and of the modules are almost graded ones. Central extensions and semi-infinite wedge representations are studied. If one considers only differential operators of degree 1 then these algebras are generalizations of the Virasoro algebra in genus zero, resp. of Krichever Novikov algebras in higher genus.

Degenerations of Generalized Krichever Novikov algebras on Tori

Degenerations of Lie algebras of meromorphic vector fields on elliptic curves (i.e. complex tori) which are holomorphic outside a certain set of points (markings) are studied. By an algebraic geometric degeneration process certain subalgebras of Lie algebras of meromorphic vector fields on P^1 the Riemann sphere are obtained. In case of some natural choices of the markings these subalgebras are explicitly determined. It is shown that the number of markings can change. String branchings and complex tori and algebraic representations of generalized Krichever-Novikov algebras

The propagation differential for bosonic strings on a complex torus with three symmetric punctures is investigated. We study deformation aspects between two point and three point differentials as well as the behaviour of the corresponding Krichever-Novikov algebras. The structure constants are calculated and from this we derive a central extension of the Krichever-Novikov algebras by means of b-c systems. The defining cocycle for this central extension deforms to the well known Virasoro cocycle for certain kinds of degenerations of the torus.
