Orientation-resolved ultrafast spin reorientation dynamics in ferrimagnetic DyCo$_5$

Under quasi-static conditions, ferrimagnetic DyCo$_5$ thin films exhibit a thermally induced spin-reorientation transition, in which the equilibrium magnetization changes from an out-of-plane to an in-plane orientation, mostly as a result of the competing magnetic anisotropy contributions of the Dy $4f$ rare-earth and Co $3d$ transition-metal sublattices. While this equilibrium transition has been studied, it remains an open question whether such a reorientation can be triggered on ultrafast timescales using femtosecond laser excitation. In this work, we investigate the ultrafast spin-reorientation dynamics in DyCo$_5$. The time-dependent orientation of the magnetization vector following femtosecond laser excitation is quantified by combining polar with transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range, which are sensitive to the out-of-plane and in-plane magnetization component, respectively. Both techniques are implemented at the Co M$_{3,2}$ resonance and are complemented by visible-light MOKE measurements. This combined approach allows us to resolve the canting of the magnetization from an out-of-plane toward an in-plane orientation and to determine the characteristic timescales of the transient spin-reorientation process.

Sharp periodic Ge concentration modulations beyond the conduction band valley wavevector $k_0$ in nuclear spin-free Si quantum wells

Periodic Ge modulations within strained Si quantum wells in SiGe heterostructures offer a route to deterministically enhance conduction-band valley splitting in Si, a key requirement for scalable spin-qubit quantum computing. Efficient enhancement requires modulations in the order of the Si valley wavevector $k_0$ (9.7 nm$^{-1}$), corresponding to a period of 0.64 nm and near-monolayer growth control. Using nuclear-spin-free molecular beam epitaxy with $^{28}$Si and $^{72}$Ge, we demonstrate Ge-modulated Si quantum wells with periods from 2.00 to 0.49 nm, including modulations at $k_0$ and $2k_0/3$. Synchrotron X-ray techniques and scanning transmission electron microscopy reveal laterally homogeneous Ge modulations over micrometer scales, with amplitudes up to 10 at-% and gradients reaching 20 at-%/nm. Two-bands $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ simulations suggest deterministic enhancement of valley splittings in steep trapezoidal $2k_0/3$ heterostructures, while the effect in $k_0$-type quantum wells is much weaker.

Tunable Light Emission from GaAsP and GaInP Islands Grown on Silicon (001) Nanotips Wafer

In this work, we present the monolithic integration of GaAsP and GaInP islands, selectively grown on a CMOS-compatible Si nanotip wafer using gas-source molecular beam epitaxy via a nanoheteroepitaxy approach. These alloys span a wide electronic bandgap range, from infrared to green; making them highly attractive for optoelectronic applications in silicon photonics. In addition, the nanoheteroepitaxy method enables the growth of various alloy combinations without the need for a lattice-matched substrate. We discuss the epitaxial challenges involved, particularly the balance between growth selectivity and alloy miscibility. Despite these challenges, our work demonstrates a promising and scalable route toward tunable light sources and detectors monolithically integrated on silicon, contributing to the development of compact and efficient photonic components for next-generation silicon-based technologies.

Ultrafast element- and depth-resolved magnetization dynamics probed by transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy in the soft x-ray range

We report on time- and angle-resolved transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy in the soft x-ray range that, by analysis via polarization-dependent magnetic scattering simulations, allows us to determine the spatio-temporal and element-specific evolution of femtosecond laser-induced spin dynamics in nanostructured magnetic materials. In a ferrimagnetic GdFe thin film system, we correlate a reshaping spectrum of the magneto-optical Kerr signal to depth-dependent magnetization dynamics and disentangle contributions due to non-equilibrium electron transport and nanoscale heat diffusion on their intrinsic time scales. Our work provides a quantitative insight into light-driven spin dynamics occurring at buried interfaces of complex magnetic heterostructures, which can be tailored and functionalized for future opto-spintronic devices.
