Anharmonic Coupling between Intermolecular Motions of Water Revealed by Terahertz Kerr Effect

Formation of local molecular structures in liquid water is believed to have marked effect on the bulk properties of water, however, resolving such structural motives in an experiment is challenging. This challenge might be handled if the relevant low-frequency structural motion of the liquid is directly driven with an intense electromagnetic pulse. Here, we resonantly excite diffusive reorientational motions in water with intense terahertz pulses and measure the resulting transient optical birefringence. The observed response is shown to arise from a particular configuration, namely the restricted trans-lational motion of water molecules whose motions are predominantly orthogonal to the dipole moment of the excited neighboring water molecules. Accordingly, we estimate the strength of the anharmonic coupling between the rotational and the restricted translational degrees of freedom of water.

The sign of the polarizability anisotropy of polar molecules is obtained faithfully from terahertz Kerr effect

Optically heterodyned detected terahertz Kerr effect of gases of polar molecules is reported. Strikingly, the birefringence signal from fluoroform is found to have opposite polarity compared to water and acetonitrile. This behavior is a hallmark of the opposite sign of the polarizability anisotropy of these molecules. Resonant excitation of the rotational degrees of freedom of the molecules aligns their permanent dipoles along the terahertz electric field. This alignment is translated into an optical birefringence through the polarizability anisotropy of each molecule. Therefore, the resulting net signal scales with the polarizability anisotropy, whose sign is imprinted faithfully onto the transient birefringence signal.

Dimensional Crossover in a Charge Density Wave Material Probed by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data reveal evidence of a crossover from one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D) behavior in the prototypical charge density wave (CDW) material NbSe3. In the low-temperature 3D regime, gaps in the electronic structure are observed due to two incommensurate CDWs, in agreement with x-ray diffraction and electronic-structure calculations. At higher temperatures we observe a spectral weight depletion that approaches the power-law behavior expected in 1D. From the warping of the quasi-1D Fermi surface at low temperatures, we extract the energy scale of the dimensional crossover. This is corroborated by a detailed analysis of the density of states, which reveals a change in dimensional behavior dependent on binding energy. Our results offer an important insight into the dimensionality of excitations in quasi-1D materials.

Terahertz sum-frequency excitation of a Raman-active phonon

In stimulated Raman scattering, two incident optical waves induce a force oscillating at the difference of the two light frequencies. This process has enabled important applications such as the excitation and coherent control of phonons and magnons by femtosecond laser pulses. Here, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate the so far neglected up-conversion counterpart of this process: THz sum-frequency excitation of a Raman-active phonon mode, which is tantamount to two-photon absorption by an optical transition between two adjacent vibrational levels. Coherent control of an optical lattice vibration of diamond is achieved by an intense terahertz pulse whose spectrum is centered at half the phonon frequency of 40 THz. Remarkably, the carrier-envelope phase of the driving pulse is directly imprinted on the lattice vibration. New prospects in infrared spectroscopy, light storage schemes and lattice trajectory control in the electronic ground state emerge.

Second Harmonic Generation from Critically Coupled Surface Phonon Polaritons

Mid-infrared nanophotonics can be realized using sub-diffractional light localization and field enhancement with surface phonon polaritons in polar dielectric materials. We experimentally demonstrate second harmonic generation due to the optical field enhancement from critically coupled surface phonon polaritons at the 6H-SiC-air interface, employing an infrared free-electron laser for intense, tunable, and narrowband mid-infrared excitation. Critical coupling to the surface polaritons is achieved using a prism in the Otto geometry with adjustable width of the air gap, providing full control over the excitation conditions along the polariton dispersion. The calculated reflectivity and second harmonic spectra reproduce the full experimental data set with high accuracy, allowing for a quantification of the optical field enhancement. We also reveal the mechanism for low out-coupling efficiency of the second harmonic light in the Otto geometry. Perspectives on surface phonon polariton-based nonlinear sensing and nonlinear waveguide coupling are discussed.

Generation and evolution of spin-, valley- and layer-polarized excited carriers in inversion-symmetric WSe2

Manipulation of spin and valley degrees of freedom is a key step towards realizing novel quantum technologies, for which atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been established as promising candidates. In monolayer TMDCs, the lack of inversion symmetry gives rise to a spin-valley correlation of the band structure allowing for valley-selective electronic excitation with circularly polarized light. Here we show that, even in centrosymmetric samples of 2H-WSe2, circularly polarized light can generate spin-, valley- and layer-polarized excited states in the conduction band. Employing time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) with spin-selective excitation, the dynamics of valley and layer pseudospins of the excited carriers are investigated. Complementary time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of the excited state populations reveal a strong circular dichroism of the spin-, valley- and layer-polarizations and a pronounced 2D character of the excited states in the K valleys. We observe scattering of carriers towards the global minimum of the conduction band on a sub-100 femtosecond timescale to states with three-dimensional character facilitating inter-layer charge transfer. Our results establish the optical control of coupled spin-, valley- and layer-polarized states in centrosymmetric materials and suggest the suitability of TMDC multilayer materials for valleytronic and spintronic device concepts.

Transient birefringence of liquids induced by terahertz electric-field torque on permanent molecular dipoles

Microscopic understanding of low-frequency molecular motions in liquids has been a longstanding goal in soft-matter science. So far, such low-frequency motions have mostly been accessed indirectly by off-resonant optical pulses. A more direct approach would be to interrogate the dynamic structure of liquids with terahertz (THz) radiation. Here, we provide evidence that resonant excitation with intense THz pulses is capable of driving reorientational-librational modes of aprotic polar liquids through coupling to the permanent molecular dipole moments. We observe a hallmark of this enhanced coupling: a transient optical birefringence up to an order of magnitude higher than obtained with optical excitation. Our results open up the path to applications such as efficient molecular alignment and systematic study of the coupling of rotational motion to other collective motions in liquids.

Higher Groupoid Bundles, Higher Spaces, and Self-Dual Tensor Field Equations

We develop a description of higher gauge theory with higher groupoids as gauge structure from first principles. This approach captures ordinary gauge theories and gauged sigma models as well as their categorifications on a very general class of (higher) spaces comprising presentable differentiable stacks, as e.g. orbifolds. We start off with a self-contained review on simplicial sets as models of $(\infty,1)$-categories. We then discuss principal bundles in terms of simplicial maps and their homotopies. We explain in detail a differentiation procedure, suggested by Severa, that maps higher groupoids to $L_\infty$-algebroids. Generalising this procedure, we define connections for higher groupoid bundles. As an application, we obtain six-dimensional superconformal field theories via a Penrose-Ward transform of higher groupoid bundles over a twistor space. This construction reduces the search for non-Abelian self-dual tensor field equations in six dimensions to a search for the appropriate (higher) gauge structure. The treatment aims to be accessible to theoretical physicists.

On Twistors and Conformal Field Theories from Six Dimensions

We discuss chiral zero-rest-mass field equations on six-dimensional space-time from a twistorial point of view. Specifically, we present a detailed cohomological analysis, develop both Penrose and Penrose-Ward transforms, and analyse the corresponding contour integral formulae. We also give twistor space action principles. We then dimensionally reduce the twistor space of six-dimensional space-time to obtain twistor formulations of various theories in lower dimensions. Besides well-known twistor spaces, we also find a novel twistor space amongst these reductions, which turns out to be suitable for a twistorial description of self-dual strings. For these reduced twistor spaces, we explain the Penrose and Penrose-Ward transforms as well as contour integral formulae.

Resonant enhancement of second harmonic generation in the mid-infrared using localized surface phonon polaritons in sub-diffractional nanostructures

We report on strong enhancement of mid-infrared second harmonic generation (SHG) from SiC nanopillars due to the resonant excitation of localized surface phonon-polaritons within the Reststrahlen band. The magnitude of the SHG peak at the monopole mode experiences a strong dependence on the resonant frequency beyond that described by the field localization degree and the dispersion of linear and nonlinear-optical SiC properties. Comparing the results for the identical nanostructures made of 4H and 6H SiC polytypes, we demonstrate the interplay of localized surface phonon polaritons with zone-folded weak phonon modes of the anisotropic crystal. Tuning the monopole mode in and out of the region where the zone-folded phonon is excited in 6H-SiC, we observe a prominent increase of the already monopole-enhanced SHG output when the two modes are coupled. Envisioning this interplay as one of the showcase features of mid-infrared nonlinear nanophononics, we discuss its prospects for the effective engineering of nonlinear-optical materials with desired properties in the infrared spectral range.

Effects of Crystal Anisotropy on Optical Phonon Resonances in the Mid-Infrared Second Harmonic Response of SiC

We study the effects of crystal anisotropy on optical phonon resonances in the second harmonic generation (SHG) from silicon carbide (SiC) in its Reststrahl region. By comparing experiments and simulations for isotropic 3C-SiC and anisotropic 4H-SiC in two crystal cuts, we identify several pronounced effects in the nonlinear response which arise solely from the crystal anisotropy. Specifically, we demonstrate that the axial and planar transverse optical phonon resonances selectively and exclusively appear in the corresponding tensor elements of the nonlinear susceptibility, enabling observation of an intense SHG peak originating from a weak phonon mode due to zone-folding along the c-axis of 4H-SiC. Similarly, we identify an anisotropy factor $ζ\equiv ε_\perp/ε_\parallel$ responsible for a steep enhancement of the transmitted fundamental fields at the axial longitudinal optical phonon frequency, resulting in strongly enhanced SHG. We develop a general recipe to extract all these features that is directly applicable to all wurtzite-structure polar dielectrics, where a very similar behavior is expected. Our model study illustrates the opportunities for utilizing the crystal anisotropy for selectively enhancing nonlinear-optical effects in polar dielectrics, which could potentially be extended to built-in anisotropy in artificially designed hybrid materials.

Localization-dependent charge separation efficiency at an organic/inorganic hybrid interface

By combining complementary optical techniques, photoluminescence and time-resolved excited state absorption, we achieve a comprehensive picture of the relaxation processes in the organic/inorganic hybrid system SP6/ZnO. We identify two long-lived excited states of the organic molecules of which only the lowest energy one, localized on the sexiphenyl backbone of the molecule, is found to efficiently charge separate to the ZnO conduction band or radiatively recombine. The other state, most likely localized on the spiro-linked biphenyl, relaxes only by intersystem crossing to a long-lived, probably triplet state, thus acting as a sink of the excitation and limiting the charge separation efficiency.

T-Duality of Green-Schwarz Superstrings on AdS(d) x S(d) x M(10-2d)

We verify the self-duality of Green-Schwarz supercoset sigma models on AdS$_d \times S^d $ backgrounds (d=2,3,5) under combined bosonic and fermionic T-dualities without gauge fixing kappa symmetry. We also prove this property for superstrings on AdS$_d \times S^d \times S^d$ (d=2,3) described by supercoset sigma models with the isometries governed by the exceptional Lie supergroups $D(2,1;α)$ (d=2) and $D(2,1;α)\times D(2,1;α)$ (d=3), which requires an additional T-dualisation along one of the spheres. Then, by taking into account the contribution of non-supercoset fermionic modes (up to the second order), we provide evidence for the T-self-duality of the complete type IIA and IIB Green-Schwarz superstring theory on AdS$_d\times S^d \times T^{10-2d}$ (d=2,3) backgrounds with Ramond-Ramond fluxes. Finally, applying the Buscher-like rules to T-dualising supergravity fields, we prove the T-self-duality of the whole class of the AdS$_d\times S^d \times M^{10-2d}$ superbackgrounds with Ramond-Ramond fluxes in the context of supergravity.

Ultrafast photocurrents at the surface of the three-dimensional topological insulator $\mathrm{Bi}_2\mathrm{Se}_3$

Topological insulators constitute a new and fascinating class of matter with insulating bulk yet metallic surfaces that host highly mobile charge carriers with spin-momentum locking. Remarkably, the direction and magnitude of surface currents can be controlled with tailored light beams, but the underlying mechanisms are not yet well understood. To directly resolve the "birth" of such photocurrents we need to boost the time resolution to the scale of elementary scattering events ($\sim$ 10 fs). Here, we excite and measure photocurrents in the three-dimensional model topological insulator $\mathrm{Bi}_2\mathrm{Se}_3$ with a time resolution as short as 20 fs by sampling the concomitantly emitted broadband THz electromagnetic field from 1 to 40 THz. Remarkably, the ultrafast surface current response is dominated by a charge transfer along the Se-Bi bonds. In contrast, photon-helicity-dependent photocurrents are found to have orders of magnitude smaller magnitude than expected from generation scenarios based on asymmetric depopulation of the Dirac cone. Our findings are also of direct relevance for optoelectronic devices based on topological-insulator surface currents.

Semistrict Higher Gauge Theory

We develop semistrict higher gauge theory from first principles. In particular, we describe the differential Deligne cohomology underlying semistrict principal 2-bundles with connective structures. Principal 2-bundles are obtained in terms of weak 2-functors from the Cech groupoid to weak Lie 2-groups. As is demonstrated, some of these Lie 2-groups can be differentiated to semistrict Lie 2-algebras by a method due to Severa. We further derive the full description of connective structures on semistrict principal 2-bundles including the non-linear gauge transformations. As an application, we use a twistor construction to derive superconformal constraint equations in six dimensions for a non-Abelian N=(2,0) tensor multiplet taking values in a semistrict Lie 2-algebra.

Historical overview on Vacuum suitable Welding and fatigue resistance in Research Devices

New inventions change the approach of vacuum suitable welding for research purpose. With orbital welding, laser welding and robot welding the possibilities increase to fabricate larger vessels more accurately. Despite this development there is still no perfect understanding on how to avoid virtual leaks and how to make such joints suitable for dynamic stress. By recalling its historical development, it is apparent how welding mistakes began occurring systematically and how to avoid them. With ASDEX-Upgrade as an example, it is shown how the attempt to conduct vacuum suitable welding has decreased the fatigue strength. ITER could repeat the mistakes of ASDEX-Upgrade even for unwanted welding (accidental fusing of joints).

Secret Symmetries of Type IIB Superstring Theory on AdS3 x S3 x M4

We establish features of so-called Yangian secret symmetries for AdS3 type IIB superstring backgrounds thus verifying the persistence of such symmetries to this new instance of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Specifically, we find two a priori different classes of secret symmetry generators. One class of generators, anticipated from the previous literature, is more naturally embedded in the algebra governing the integrable scattering problem. The other class of generators is more elusive, and somewhat closer in its form to its higher-dimensional AdS5 counterpart. All of these symmetries respect left-right crossing. In addition, by considering the interplay between left and right representations, we gain a new perspective on the AdS5 case. We also study the RTT-realisation of the Yangian in AdS3 backgrounds thus establishing a new incarnation of the Beisert-de Leeuw construction.

Instantaneous band gap collapse in photoexcited monoclinic VO$_2$ due to photocarrier doping

Using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we demonstrate that photoexcitation transforms monoclinic VO$_2$ quasi-instantaneously into a metal. Thereby, we exclude an 80 femtosecond structural bottleneck for the photoinduced electronic phase transition of VO$_2$. First-principles many-body perturbation theory calculations reveal a high sensitivity of the VO$_2$ bandgap to variations of the dynamically screened Coulomb interaction, supporting a fully electronically driven isostructral insulator-to-metal transition. We thus conclude that the ultrafast band structure renormalization is caused by photoexcitation of carriers from localized V 3d valence states, strongly changing the screening \emph{before} significant hot-carrier relaxation or ionic motion has occurred.
