Tunable sub-20 fs pulses from a 500 kHz OPCPA with 15 W average power based on an all-ytterbium laser

An optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier fully based on Yb lasers at 500 kHz is described. Passive optical-synchronization is achieved between a fiber laser-pumped white-light and a 515 nm pump produced with a 200 W picosecond Yb:YAG InnoSlab amplifier. An output power up to 19.7 W with long-term stability of 0.3% is demonstrated for wavelength tunable pulses between 680 nm and 900 nm and spectral stability of 0.2%; 16.5 W can be achieved with a bandwidth supporting 5.4 fs pulses. We demonstrate compression of 30 microjoule pulses to sub-20 fs duration with a prism compressor, suitable for high harmonic generation.

Six-Dimensional Superconformal Field Theories from Principal 3-Bundles over Twistor Space

We construct manifestly superconformal field theories in six dimensions which contain a non-Abelian tensor multiplet. In particular, we show how principal 3-bundles over a suitable twistor space encode solutions to these self-dual tensor field theories via a Penrose-Ward transform. The resulting higher or categorified gauge theories significantly generalise those obtained previously from principal 2-bundles in that the so-called Peiffer identity is relaxed in a systematic fashion. This transform also exposes various unexplored structures of higher gauge theories modelled on principal 3-bundles such as the relevant gauge transformations. This enables us to formulate the non-Abelian differential cohomology that describes principal 3-bundles with connective structures.

Non-Abelian Tensor Multiplet Equations from Twistor Space

We establish a Penrose-Ward transform yielding a bijection between holomorphic principal 2-bundles over a twistor space and non-Abelian self-dual tensor fields on six-dimensional flat space-time. Extending the twistor space to supertwistor space, we derive sets of manifestly N=(1,0) and N=(2,0) supersymmetric non-Abelian constraint equations containing the tensor multiplet. We also demonstrate how this construction leads to constraint equations for non-Abelian supersymmetric self-dual strings.

Sub-cycle control of terahertz waveform polarization using all-optically induced transient metamaterials

Coherent radiation with frequencies ranging from 0.3 to 30 THz has recently become accessible by femtosecond laser technology. Terahertz (THz) waves have already found many applications in spectroscopy and imaging, and they can be manipulated using static optical elements such as lenses, polarizers, and filters. However, ultrafast modulation of THz radiation is required as well, for instance in short-range wireless communication or for preparing shaped THz transients for coherent control of numerous material excitations. Here, we demonstrate an all-optically created transient metamaterial that permits to manipulate the polarization of THz waveforms with sub-cycle precision. The polarization-modulated pulses are potentially interesting for controlling elementary motions such as vibrations of crystal lattices, rotations of molecules, and the precession of spins.

Ultrafast changes in lattice symmetry probed by coherent phonons

The electronic and structural properties of a material are strongly determined by its symmetry. Changing the symmetry via a photoinduced phase transition offers new ways to manipulate material properties on ultrafast timescales. However, in order to identify when and how fast these phase transitions occur, methods that can probe the symmetry change in the time domain are required. We show that a time-dependent change in the coherent phonon spectrum can probe a change in symmetry of the lattice potential, thus providing an all-optical probe of structural transitions. We examine the photoinduced structural phase transition in VO2 and show that, above the phase transition threshold, photoexcitation completely changes the lattice potential on an ultrafast timescale. The loss of the equilibrium-phase phonon modes occurs promptly, indicating a non-thermal pathway for the photoinduced phase transition, where a strong perturbation to the lattice potential changes its symmetry before ionic rearrangement has occurred.

Contact Manifolds, Contact Instantons, and Twistor Geometry

Recently, Kallen and Zabzine computed the partition function of a twisted supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on the five-dimensional sphere using localisation techniques. Key to their construction is a five-dimensional generalisation of the instanton equation to which they refer as the contact instanton equation. Subject of this article is the twistor construction of this equation when formulated on K-contact manifolds and the discussion of its integrability properties. We also present certain extensions to higher dimensions and supersymmetric generalisations.

A Twistor Description of Six-Dimensional N=(1,1) Super Yang-Mills Theory

We present a twistor space that describes super null-lines on six-dimensional N=(1,1) superspace. We then show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between holomorphic vector bundles over this twistor space and solutions to the field equations of N=(1,1) super Yang-Mills theory. Our constructions naturally reduce to those of the twistorial description of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions.

Coherent excitations and electron phonon coupling in Ba/EuFe_2As_2 compounds investigated by femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We employed femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to analyze the response of the electronic structure of the 122 Fe-pnictide parent compounds Ba/EuFe_2As_2 and optimally doped BaFe_{1.85}Co_{0.15}As_2 near the Γpoint to femtosecond optical excitation. We identify pronounced changes of the electron population within several 100 meV above and below the Fermi level, which we explain as combination of (i) coherent lattice vibrations, (ii) a hot electron and hole distribution, and (iii) transient modifications of the chemical potential. The response of the three different materials is very similar. In the Fourier transformation of the time-dependent photoemission intensity we identify three modes at 5.6, 3.3, and 2.6 THz. While the highest frequency mode is safely assigned to the A_{1g} mode, the other two modes require a discussion in comparison to literature. The time-dependent evolution of the hot electron distribution follows a simplified description of a transient three temperature model which considers two heat baths of lattice vibrations, which are more weakly and strongly coupled to transiently excited electron population. Still the energy transfer from electrons to the strongly coupled phonons results in a rather weak, momentum-averaged electron-phonon coupling quantified by values for λ<ω^2> between 30 and 70 meV^2. The chemical potential is found to present a transient modulation induced by the coherent phonons. This change in the chemical potential is particularly strong in a two band system like in the 122 Fe-pnictide compounds investigated here due to the pronounced variation of the electrons density of states close to the equilibrium chemical potential.

Shaping up BPS States with Matrix Model Saddle Points

We provide analytical results for the probability distribution of a family of wavefunctions of a quantum mechanics model of commuting matrices in the large-N limit. These wavefunctions describe the strong coupling limit of 1/8 BPS states of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Therefore, in the large-N limit, they should be dual to classical solutions of type IIB supergravity that asymptotically approach AdS5xS5. Each probability distribution can be described as the partition function of a matrix model (different wavefunctions correspond to different matrix model potentials) which we study by means of a saddle point approximation. These saddle point solutions are given in terms of (five-dimensional) hypersurfaces supporting density distributions of eigenvalues.

A First Course on Twistors, Integrability and Gluon Scattering Amplitudes

These notes accompany an introductory lecture course on the twistor approach to supersymmetric gauge theories aimed at early-stage PhD students. It was held by the author at the University of Cambridge during the Michaelmas term in 2009. The lectures assume a working knowledge of differential geometry and quantum field theory. No prior knowledge of twistor theory is required.

A Connection between Twistors and Superstring Sigma Models on Coset Superspaces

We consider superstring sigma models that are based on coset superspaces G/H in which H arises as the fixed point set of an order-4 automorphism of G. We show by means of twistor theory that the corresponding first-order system, consisting of the Maurer-Cartan equations and the equations of motion, arises from a dimensional reduction of some generalised self-dual Yang-Mills equations in eight dimensions. Such a relationship might help shed light on the explicit construction of solutions to the superstring equations including their hidden symmetry structures and thus on the properties of their gauge theory duals.

Marginal Deformations and 3-Algebra Structures

We study marginal deformations of superconformal Chern-Simons matter theories that are based on 3-algebras. For this, we introduce the notion of an associated 3-product, which captures very general gauge invariant deformations of the superpotentials of the BLG and ABJM models. We also consider conformal multi-trace deformations preserving N=2 supersymmetry. We then use N=2 supergraph techniques to compute the two-loop beta functions of these deformations. Besides confirming conformal invariance of both the BLG and ABJM models, we also verify that the recently proposed beta-deformations of the ABJM model are indeed marginal to the order we are considering.

Dual Superconformal Symmetry from AdS5 x S5 Superstring Integrability

We discuss 2d duality transformations in the classical AdS5 x S5 superstring and their effect on the integrable structure. T-duality along four directions in Poincare parametrization of AdS5 maps the bosonic part of the superstring action into itself. On bosonic level, this duality may be understood as a symmetry of the first-order (phase space) system of equations for the coset components of the current. The associated Lax connection is invariant modulo the action of an so(2,4)-automorphism. We then show that this symmetry extends to the full superstring, provided one supplements the transformation of the bosonic components of the current with a transformation on the fermionic ones. At the level of the action, this symmetry can be seen by combining the bosonic duality transformation with a similar one applied to part of the fermionic superstring coordinates. As a result, the full superstring action is mapped into itself, albeit in a different kappa-symmetry gauge. One implication is that the dual model has the same superconformal symmetry group as the original one, and this may be seen as a consequence of the integrability of the superstring. The invariance of the Lax connection under the duality implies a map on the full set of conserved charges that should interchange some of the Noether (local) charges with hidden (non-local) ones and vice versa.

Twistor Actions for Self-Dual Supergravities

We give holomorphic Chern-Simons-like action functionals on supertwistor space for self-dual supergravity theories in four dimensions, dealing with N=0,...,8 supersymmetries, the cases where different parts of the R-symmetry are gauged, and with or without a cosmological constant. The gauge group is formally the group of holomorphic Poisson transformations of supertwistor space where the form of the Poisson structure determines the amount of R-symmetry gauged and the value of the cosmological constant. We give a formulation in terms of a finite deformation of an integrable \dbar-operator on a supertwistor space, i.e., on regions in CP^{3|8}. For N=0, we also give a formulation that does not require the choice of a background.

Self-Dual Supergravity and Twistor Theory

By generalizing and extending some of the earlier results derived by Manin and Merkulov, a twistor description is given of four-dimensional N-extended (gauged) self-dual supergravity with and without cosmological constant. Starting from the category of (4|4N)-dimensional complex superconformal supermanifolds, the categories of (4|2N)-dimensional complex quaternionic, quaternionic Kaehler and hyper-Kaehler right-chiral supermanifolds are introduced and discussed. We then present a detailed twistor description of these types of supermanifolds. In particular, we construct supertwistor spaces associated with complex quaternionic right-chiral supermanifolds, and explain what additional supertwistor data allows for giving those supermanifolds a hyper-Kaehler structure. In this way, we obtain a supersymmetric generalization of Penrose's nonlinear graviton construction. We furthermore give an alternative formulation in terms of a supersymmetric extension of LeBrun's Einstein bundle. This allows us to include the cases with nonvanishing cosmological constant. We also discuss the bundle of local supertwistors and address certain implications thereof. Finally, we comment on a real version of the theory related to Euclidean signature.

On T-Duality and Integrability for Strings on AdS Backgrounds

We discuss an interplay between T-duality and integrability for certain classical non-linear sigma models. In particular, we consider strings on the AdS_5 x S^5 background and perform T-duality along the four isometry directions of AdS_5 in the Poincare patch. The T-dual of the AdS_5 sigma model is again a sigma model on an AdS_5 space. This classical T-duality relation was used in the recently uncovered connection between light-like Wilson loops and MHV gluon scattering amplitudes in the strong coupling limit of the AdS/CFT duality. We show that the explicit coordinate dependence along the T-duality directions of the associated Lax connection (flat current) can be eliminated by means of a field dependent gauge transformation. As a result, the gauge equivalent Lax connection can easily be T-dualized, i.e. written in terms of the dual set of isometric coordinates. The T-dual Lax connection can be used for the derivation of infinitely many conserved charges in the T-dual model. Our construction implies that local (Noether) charges of the original model are mapped to non-local charges of the T-dual model and vice versa.

On supertwistor geometry and integrability in super gauge theory

In this thesis, we report on different aspects of integrability in supersymmetric gauge theories. The main tool of investigation is twistor geometry. In trying to be self-contained, we first present a brief review about the basics of twistor geometry. We then focus on the twistor description of various gauge theories in four and three space-time dimensions. These include self-dual supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theories and relatives, non-self-dual SYM theories and supersymmetric Bogomolny models. Furthermore, we present a detailed investigation of integrability of self-dual SYM theories. In particular, the twistor construction of infinite-dimensional algebras of hidden symmetries is given and exemplified by deriving affine extensions of internal and space-time symmetries. In addition, we derive self-dual SYM hierarchies within the twistor framework. These hierarchies describe an infinite number of flows on the respective solution space, where the lowest level flows are space-time translations. We also derive infinitely many nonlocal conservation laws.

Hidden Symmetries and Integrable Hierarchy of the N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Equations

We describe an infinite-dimensional algebra of hidden symmetries of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. Our derivation is based on a generalization of the supertwistor correspondence. Using the latter, we construct an infinite sequence of flows on the solution space of the N=4 SYM equations. The dependence of the SYM fields on the parameters along the flows can be recovered by solving the equations of the hierarchy. We embed the N=4 SYM equations in the infinite system of the hierarchy equations and show that this SYM hierarchy is associated with an infinite set of graded symmetries recursively generated from supertranslations. Presumably, the existence of such nonlocal symmetries underlies the observed integrable structures in quantum N=4 SYM theory.
