Scalar and fermion on-shell amplitudes in generalized Higgs effective field theory

Beyond standard model (BSM) particles should be included in effective field theory in order to compute the scattering amplitudes involving these extra particles. We formulate an extension of Higgs effective field theory which contains arbitrary number of scalar and fermion fields with arbitrary electric and chromoelectric charges. The BSM Higgs sector is described by using the non-linear sigma model in a manner consistent with the spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking. The chiral order counting rule is arranged consistently with the loop expansion. The leading order Lagrangian is organized in accord with the chiral order counting rule. We use a geometrical language to describe the particle interactions. The parametrization redundancy in the effective Lagrangian is resolved by describing the on-shell scattering amplitudes only with the covariant quantities in the scalar/fermion field space. We introduce a useful coordinate (normal coordinate), which simplifies the computations of the on-shell amplitudes significantly. We show the high energy behaviors of the scattering amplitudes determine the "curvature tensors" in the scalar/fermion field space. The massive spinor-wavefunction formalism is shown to be useful in the computations of on-shell helicity amplitudes.

Symmetry and geometry in generalized Higgs effective field theory -- Finiteness of oblique corrections v.s. perturbative unitarity

We formulate a generalization of Higgs effective field theory (HEFT) including arbitrary number of extra neutral and charged Higgs bosons (generalized HEFT, GHEFT) to describe non-minimal electroweak symmetry breaking models. Using the geometrical form of the GHEFT Lagrangian, which can be regarded as a nonlinear sigma model on a scalar manifold, it is shown that the scalar boson scattering amplitudes are described in terms of the Riemann curvature tensor (geometry) of the scalar manifold and the covariant derivatives of the potential. The coefficients of the one-loop divergent terms in the oblique correction parameters S and U can also be written in terms of the Killing vectors (symmetry) and the Riemann curvature tensor (geometry). It is found that perturbative unitarity of the scattering amplitudes involving the Higgs bosons and the longitudinal gauge bosons demands the flatness of the scalar manifold. The relationship between the finiteness of the electroweak oblique corrections and perturbative unitarity of the scattering amplitudes is also clarified in this language: we verify that once the tree-level unitarity is ensured, then the one-loop finiteness of the oblique correction parameters S and U is automatically guaranteed.

Relic Abundance in a Secluded Dark Matter Scenario with a Massive Mediator

The relic abundance of the dark matter (DM) particle $d$ is studied in a secluded DM scenario, in which the $d$ number decreasing process dominantly occurs not through the pair annihilation of $d$ into the standard model particles, but via the $dd \to mm$ scattering process with a subsequently decaying mediator particle $m$. It is pointed out that the cosmologically observed relic abundance of DM can be accomplished even with a massive mediator having a mass $m_m$ non-negligibly heavy compared with the DM particle mass $m_d$. In the degenerated $d$-$m$ case ($m_d=m_m$), the DM relic abundance is realized by adjusting the $dd \to mm$ scattering amplitude large enough and by choosing an appropriate mediator particle life-time. The DM evolution in the early universe exhibits characteristic "terrace" behavior, or two-step number density decreasing behavior, having a "fake" freeze-out at the first step. Based on these observations, a novel possibility of the DM model buildings is introduced in which the mediator particle $m$ is unified with the DM particle $d$ in an approximate dark symmetry multiplet. A pionic DM model is proposed to illustrate this idea in a renormalizable field theory framework.

Unitarity sum rules, three site moose model, and the ATLAS 2 TeV diboson anomalies

We investigate $W'$ interpretations for the ATLAS 2 TeV diboson anomalies. The roles of the unitarity sum rules, which ensure the perturbativity of the longitudinal vector boson scattering amplitudes, are emphasized. We find the unitarity sum rules and the custodial symmetry are powerful enough to predict various nontrivial relations among $WWZ'$, $WZW'$, $WWh$, $WW'h$ and $ZZ'h$ coupling strengths in a model independent manner. We also perform surveys in the general parameter space of $W'$ models and find the ATLAS 2 TeV diboson anomalies may be interpreted as a $W'$ particle of the three site moose model, i.e., a Kaluza-Klein like particle in a deconstructed extra dimension model. It is also shown that the non standard-model-like Higgs boson is favored by the present data to interpret the ATLAS diboson anomalies as the consequences of the $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons.

Does unitarity imply finiteness of electroweak oblique corrections at one-loop? - constraining extra neutral Higgs bosons -

Introducing arbitrary number of neutral Higgs bosons in the electroweak symmetry breaking sector, we derive a set of conditions among Higgs couplings which need to be satisfied to maintain the unitarity of the high energy scattering amplitudes of weak gauge bosons at the tree level (unitarity sum rules). It is shown that the unitarity sum rules require the tree level $ρ$ parameter to be 1, without explicitly invoking the custodial symmetry arguments. The one-loop finiteness of the electroweak oblique corrections is automatically guaranteed once these unitarity sum rules are imposed among Higgs couplings. Severe constraints on the lightest Higgs coupling (125GeV Higgs coupling) and the mass of the second lightest Higgs boson are obtained from the unitarity and the results of the electroweak precision tests (oblique parameter measurements). These results are compared with the effective theory of the light Higgs boson, and we find simple relationships between the mass of the second lightest Higgs boson in our framework and the ultraviolet cutoff in the effective theory framework.

The Flavor Structure of the Three-Site Higgsless Model

We study the flavor structure of the three-site Higgsless model and evaluate the constraints on the model arising from flavor physics. We find that current data constrain the model to exhibit only minimal flavor violation at tree level. Moreover, at the one-loop level, by studying the leading chiral logarithmic corrections to chirality-preserving Delta F = 1 and Delta F = 2 processes from new physics in the model, we show that the combination of minimal flavor violation and ideal delocalization ensures that these flavor-changing effects are sufficiently small that the model remains phenomenologically viable.

Identifying Better Effective Higgsless Theories via W_L W_L Scattering

The three site Higgsless model has been offered as a benchmark for studying the collider phenomenology of Higgsless models. In this talk, we present how well the three site Higgsless model performs as a general representative of Higgsless models in describing W_L W_L scattering, and which modifications can make it more representative. We employ general sum rules relating the masses and couplings of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the gauge fields in continuum and deconstructed Higgsless models as a way to compare the different theories. After comparing the three site Higgsless model to flat and warped continuum Higgsless models, we analyze an extensions of the three site Higgsless model, namely, the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Higgsless model. We demonstrate that W_LW_L scattering in the HLS Higgsless model can very closely approximate scattering in the continuum models, provided that the parameter `a' is chosen to mimic rho-meson dominance of pi-pi scattering in QCD.

W_L W_L Scattering in Higgsless Models: Identifying Better Effective Theories

The three-site model has been offered as a benchmark for studying the collider phenomenology of Higgsless models. In this paper we analyze how well the three-site model performs as a general exemplar of Higgsless models in describing W_L W_L scattering, and which modifications can make it more representative. We employ general sum rules relating the masses and couplings of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the gauge fields in continuum and deconstructed Higgsless models as a way to compare the different theories. We show that the size of the four-point vertex for the (unphysical) Nambu-Goldstone modes and the degree to which the sum rules are saturated by contributions from the lowest-lying KK resonances both provide good measures of the extent to which a highly-deconstructed theory can accurately describe the low-energy physics of a continuum 5d Higgsless model. After comparing the three-site model to flat and warped continuum models, we analyze extensions of the three-site model to a longer open linear moose with an additional U(1) group and to a ring ("BESS' or "hidden local symmetry") model with three sites and three links. Both cases may be readily analyzed in the framework of the general sum rules. We demonstrate that W_L W_L scattering in the ring model can very closely approximate scattering in the continuum models, provided that the hidden local symmetry parameter `a' is chosen to mimic rho-meson dominance of pion-pion scattering in QCD. The hadron and lepton collider phenomenology of both extended models is briefly discussed, with a focus on the complementary information to be gained from precision measurements of the Z' line shape and ZWW coupling at a high-energy lepton collider.

Z to b bbar and Chiral Currents in Higgsless Models

In this note we compute the flavor-dependent chiral-logarithmic corrections to the decay Z to b bbar in the three site Higgsless model. We compute these corrections diagrammatically in the "gaugeless" limit in which the electroweak couplings vanish. We also compute the chiral-logarithmic corrections to the decay Z to b bbar using an RGE analysis in effective field theory, and show that the results agree. In the process of this computation, we compute the form of the chiral current in the gaugeless limit of the three-site model, and consider the generalization to the N-site case. We elucidate the Ward-Takahashi identities which underlie the gaugeless limit calculation in the three-site model, and describe how the result for the Z to b bbar amplitude is obtained in unitary gauge in the full theory. We find that the phenomenological constraints on the three-site Higgsless model arising from measurements of Z to b bbar are relatively mild, requiring only that the heavy Dirac fermion be heavier than 1 TeV or so, and are satisfied automatically in the range of parameters allowed by other precision electroweak data.

Does the three site Higgsless model survive the electroweak precision tests at loop?

We complete the list of one loop renormalization group equations and matching conditions relevant for the computation of the electroweak precision parameters $S$ and $T$ in the three site Higgsless model. We obtain one-loop formulas for $S$ and $T$ expressed in terms of physical observables such as the KK gauge boson mass $M_{W'}$, the KK fermion mass $M$, and the KK gauge boson ($W'$) couplings with light quarks and leptons $g_{W'ff}$. It is shown that these physical observables, $M_{W'}$, $M$ and $g_{W'ff}$ are severely constrained by the electroweak precision data. Unlike the tree level analysis on the ideally delocalized fermion, we find that perfect fermiophobity of $W'$ is ruled out by the precision data. We also study the cutoff dependence of our analysis. Although the model is non-renormalizable, the dependence on the cutoff parameter $Λ$ is shown to be non-significant.

General Sum Rules for WW Scattering in Higgsless Models: Equivalence Theorem and Deconstruction Identities

We analyze inelastic 2 to 2 scattering amplitudes for gauge bosons and Nambu-Goldstone bosons in deconstructed Higgsless models. Using the (KK) Equivalence Theorem in 4D (5D), we derive a set of general sum rules among the boson masses and multi-boson couplings that are valid for arbitrary deconstructed models. Taking the continuum limit, our results naturally include the 5D Higgsless model sum rules for arbitrary 5D geometry and boundary conditions; they also reduce to the elastic sum rules when applied to the special case of elastic scattering. For the case of linear deconstructed Higgsless models, we demonstrate that the sum rules can also be derived from a set of general deconstruction identities and completeness relations. We apply these sum rules to the deconstructed 3-site Higgsless model and its extensions; we show that in 5D ignoring all higher KK modes (n>1) is inconsistent once the inelastic channels become important. Finally, we discuss how our results generalize beyond the case of linear Higgsless models.

The Three Site Model at One-Loop

In this paper we compute the one-loop chiral logarithmic corrections to all O(p^4) counterterms in the three site Higgsless model. The calculation is performed using the background field method for both the chiral- and gauge-fields, and using Landau gauge for the quantum fluctuations of the gauge fields. The results agree with our previous calculations of the chiral-logarithmic corrections to the S and T parameters in 't Hooft-Feynman gauge. The work reported here includes a complete evaluation of all one-loop divergences in an SU(2) x U(1) nonlinear sigma model, corresponding to an electroweak effective Lagrangian in the absence of custodial symmetry.

One-Loop Corrections to the S and T Parameters in a Three Site Higgsless Model

In this paper we compute the the one-loop chiral logarithmic corrections to the S and T parameters in a highly deconstructed Higgsless model with only three sites. In addition to the electroweak gauge bosons, this model contains a single extra triplet of vector states (which we denote ρ^{\pm} and ρ^0), rather than an infinite tower of "KK" modes. We compute the corrections to S and T in 'tHooft-Feynman gauge, including the ghost, unphysical Goldstone-boson, and appropriate "pinch" contributions required to obtain gauge-invariant results for the one-loop self-energy functions. We demonstrate that the chiral-logarithmic corrections naturally separate into two parts, a model-independent part arising from scaling below the ρmass, which has the same form as the large Higgs-mass dependence of the S or T parameter in the standard model, and a second model-dependent contribution arising from scaling between the ρmass and the cutoff of the model. The form of the universal part of the one-loop result allows us to correctly interpret the phenomenologically derived limits on the S and T parameters (which depend on a "reference" Higgs-boson mass) in this three-site Higgsless model. Higgsless models may be viewed as dual to models of dynamical symmetry breaking akin to "walking technicolor", and in these terms our calculation is the first to compute the subleading 1/N corrections to the S and T parameters. We also discuss the reduction of the model to the ``two-site'' model, which is the usual electroweak chiral lagrangian, noting the ``non-decoupling'' contributions present in the limit as M_ρgoes to infinity.

Deconstruction and Elastic pi pi Scattering in Higgsless Models

We study elastic pion-pion scattering in global linear moose models and apply the results to a variety of Higgsless models in flat and AdS space using the Equivalence Theorem. In order to connect the global moose to Higgsless models, we first introduce a block-spin transformation which corresponds, in the continuum, to the freedom to perform coordinate transformations in the Higgsless model. We show that it is possible to make an "f-flat" deconstruction in which all of the f-constants f_j of the linear moose model are identical; the phenomenologically relevant f-flat models are those in which the coupling constants of the groups at either end of the moose are small - corresponding to the global linear moose. In studying pion-pion scattering, we derive various sum rules, including one analogous to the KSRF relation, and use them in evaluating the low-energy and high-energy forms of the leading elastic partial wave scattering amplitudes. We obtain elastic unitarity bounds as a function of the mass of the lightest KK mode and discuss their physical significance.

A Three Site Higgsless Model

We analyze the spectrum and properties of a highly-deconstructed Higgsless model with only three sites. Such a model contains sufficient complexity to incorporate interesting physics issues related to fermion masses and electroweak observables, yet remains simple enough that it could be encoded in a Matrix Element Generator program for use with Monte Carlo simulations. The gauge sector of this model is equivalent to that of the BESS model; the new physics of interest here lies in the fermion sector. We analyze the form of the fermion Yukawa couplings required to produce the ideal fermion delocalization that causes tree-level precision electroweak corrections to vanish. We discuss the size of one-loop corrections to b \to s γ, the weak-isospin violating parameter αT and the decay Z \to b \bar{b}. We find that the new fermiophobic vector states (the analogs of the gauge-boson KK modes in a continuum model) can be reasonably light, with a mass as low as 380 GeV, while the extra (approximately vectorial) quark and lepton states (the analogs of the fermion KK modes) must be heavier than 1.8 TeV.

Ideal Fermion Delocalization in Five Dimensional Gauge Theories

We discuss ideal delocalization of fermions in a bulk SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) Higgsless model with a flat or warped extra dimension. So as to make an extra dimensional interpretation possible, both the weak and hypercharge properties of the fermions are delocalized, with the U(1)_Y current of left-handed fermions being correlated with the SU(2)_W current. We find that (to subleading order) ideal fermion delocalization yields vanishing precision electroweak corrections in this continuum model, as found in corresponding theory space models based on deconstruction. In addition to explicit calculations, we present an intuitive argument for our results based on Georgi's spring analogy. We also discuss the conditions under which the essential features of an SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) bulk gauge theory can be captured by a simpler SU(2) x SU(2) model.

Multi-Gauge-Boson Vertices and Chiral Lagrangian Parameters in Higgsless Models with Ideal Fermion Delocalization

Higgsless models with fermions whose SU(2) properties are "ideally delocalized," such that the fermion's probability distribution is appropriately related to the W boson wavefunction, have been shown to minimize deviations in precision electroweak parameters. As contributions to the S parameter vanish to leading order, current constraints on these models arise from limits on deviations in multi-gauge-boson vertices. We compute the form of the triple and quartic gauge boson vertices in these models and show that these constraints provide lower bounds only of order a few hundred GeV on the masses of the lightest KK resonances. Higgsless models with ideal fermion delocalization provide an example of extended electroweak gauge interactions with suppressed couplings of fermions to extra gauge-bosons, and these are the only models for which triple-gauge-vertex measurements provide meaningful constraints. We relate the multi-gauge couplings to parameters of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian, and the parameters obtained in these SU(2) x SU(2) models apply equally to the corresponding five dimensional gauge theory models of QCD. We also discuss the collider phenomenology of the KK resonances in models with ideal delocalization. These resonances are found to be fermiophobic, therefore traditional direct collider searches are not sensitive to them and measurements of gauge-boson scattering will be needed to find them.
