Deconstructed Higgsless Models with One-Site Delocalization

In this note we calculate the form of electroweak corrections in deconstructed Higgsless models for the case of a fermion whose weak properties arise from two adjacent SU(2) groups on the deconstructed lattice. We show that, as recently proposed in the continuum, it is possible for the value of the electroweak parameter alpha S to be small in such a model. In addition, by working in the deconstructed limit, we may directly evaluate the size of off-Z-pole electroweak corrections arising from the exchange of Kaluza-Klein modes; this has not been studied in the continuum. The size of these corrections is summarized by the electroweak parameter alpha delta. In one-site delocalized Higgsless models with small values of alpha S, we show that the amount of delocalization is bounded from above, and must be less than 25% at 95% CL. We discuss the relation of these calculations to our previous calculations in deconstructed Higgsless models, and to models of extended technicolor. We present numerical results for a four-site model, illustrating our analytic calculations.

Ideal Fermion Delocalization in Higgsless Models

In this note we examine the properties of deconstructed Higgsless models for the case of a fermion whose SU(2) properties arise from delocalization over many sites of the deconstructed lattice. We derive expressions for the correlation functions and use these to establish a generalized consistency relation among correlation functions. We discuss the form of the W boson wavefunction and show that if the probability distribution of the delocalized fermions is appropriately related to the W wavefunction, then deviations in precision electroweak parameters are minimized. In particular, we show that this "ideal fermion delocalization" results in the vanishing of three of the four leading zero-momentum electroweak parameters defined by Barbieri, et. al. We then discuss ideal fermion delocalization in the context of two continuum Higgsless models, one in Anti-deSitter space and one in flat space. Our results may be applied to any Higgsless linear moose model with multiple SU(2) groups, including those with only a few extra vector bosons.

Universal Non-Oblique Corrections in Higgsless Models and Beyond

Recently Barbieri, et al. have introduced a formalism to express the deviations of electroweak interactions from their standard model forms in "universal" theories, i.e. theories in which the corrections due to new physics can be expressed solely by modifications to the two-point correlation function of electroweak gauge currents of fermions. The parameters introduced by these authors are defined by the properties of the correlation functions at zero momentum, and differ from the quantities calculated by examining the on-shell properties of the electroweak gauge bosons. In this letter we discuss the relationship between the zero-momentum and on-shell parameters. In addition, we present the results of a calculation of these zero-momentum parameters in an arbitrary Higgsless model in which the low-energy rho parameter is one and which can be deconstructed to a linear chain of SU(2) groups adjacent to a chain of U(1) groups. Our results demonstrate the importance of the universal "non-oblique" corrections which are present and elucidate the relationships among various calculations of electroweak quantities in these models. Our expressions for these zero-momentum parameters depend only on the spectrum of heavy vector-boson masses; therefore, the minimum size of the deviations present in these models is related to the upper bound on the heavy vector-boson masses derived from unitarity. We find that these models are disfavored by precision electroweak data, independent of any assumptions about the background metric or the behavior of the bulk coupling.

Electroweak Corrections and Unitarity in Linear Moose Models

We calculate the form of the corrections to the electroweak interactions in the class of Higgsless models which can be "deconstructed'' to a chain of SU(2) gauge groups adjacent to a chain of U(1) gauge groups, and with the fermions coupled to any single SU(2) group and to any single U(1) group along the chain. The primary advantage of our technique is that the size of corrections to electroweak processes can be directly related to the spectrum of vector bosons ("KK modes"). In Higgsless models, this spectrum is constrained by unitarity. Our methods also allow for arbitrary background 5-D geometry, spatially dependent gauge-couplings, and brane kinetic energy terms. We find that, due to the size of corrections to electroweak processes in any unitary theory, Higgsless models with localized fermions are disfavored by precision electroweak data. Although we stress our results as they apply to continuum Higgsless 5-D models, they apply to any linear moose model including those with only a few extra vector bosons. Our calculations of electroweak corrections also apply directly to the electroweak gauge sector of 5-D theories with a bulk scalar Higgs boson; the constraints arising from unitarity do not apply in this case.

Top mode standard model and extra dimensions

We perform the most attractive channel (MAC) analysis in the top mode standard model with TeV-scale extra dimensions, where the standard model gauge bosons and the third generation of quarks and leptons are put in D(=6,8,...) dimensions. In order to make the scenario viable, only the attractive force of the top condensate should exceed the critical coupling, while other channels such as the bottom and tau condensates should not. It turns out that the top condensate can be the MAC for D=8, whereas the tau condensation is favored for D=6. On the basis of the renormalization group equations for the top Yukawa and Higgs quartic couplings, we predict masses of the top quark and the Higgs boson for D=8 as m_t=172-175 GeV and m_H=176-188 GeV, respectively.

Oblique Corrections in Deconstructed Higgsless Models

In this talk, using deconstruction, we analyze the form of the corrections to the electroweak interactions in a large class of ``Higgsless'' models of electroweak symmetry breaking, allowing for arbitrary 5-D geometry, position-dependent gauge coupling, and brane kinetic energy terms. Many models considered in the literature, including those most likely to be phenomenologically viable, are in this class. By analyzing the asymptotic behavior of the correlation function of gauge currents at high momentum, we extract the exact form of the relevant correlation functions at tree-level and compute the corrections to precision electroweak observables in terms of the spectrum of heavy vector bosons. We determine when nonoblique corrections due to the interactions of fermions with the heavy vector bosons become important, and specify the form such interactions can take. In particular we find that in this class of models, so long as the theory remains unitary, S - 4 c^2_W T > O(1), where S and T are the usual oblique parameters.

The Structure of Corrections to Electroweak Interactions in Higgsless Models

Recently, ``Higgsless'' models of electroweak symmetry breaking have been proposed. Based on compactified five-dimensional gauge theories, these models achieve unitarity of electroweak boson self-interactions through the exchange of a tower of massive vector bosons rather than the exchange of a scalar Higgs boson. In this paper, using deconstruction, we analyze the form of the corrections to the electroweak interactions in a large class of these models, allowing for arbitrary 5-D geometry, position-dependent gauge coupling, and brane kinetic energy terms. We show that many models considered in the literature, including those most likely to be phenomenologically viable, are in this class. In particular we find that in this class of models, so long as the theory remains unitary, S-4 c^2__W T > O(1), where S and T are the usual oblique parameters. We concur with the result of Cacciapaglia et.al. that small or negative S is possible -- though only at the expense of substantial negative T at tree-level. Although we stress our results as they apply to continuum 5-D models, they apply also to models of extended electroweak gauge symmetries motivated by models of hidden local symmetry.

Gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with extra dimensions

We investigate phase structure of the D (> 4)-dimensional gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with $δ(=D-4)$ extra dimensions compactified on TeV scale, based on the improved ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation in the bulk. We assume that the bulk running gauge coupling in the SD equation for the SU(N_c) gauge theory with N_f massless flavors is given by the truncated Kaluza-Klein effective theory and hence has a nontrivial ultraviolet fixed point (UVFP). We find the critical line in the parameter space of two couplings, the gauge coupling and the four-fermion coupling, which is similar to that of the gauged NJL model with fixed (walking) gauge coupling in four dimensions. It is shown that in the presence of such walking gauge interactions the four-fermion interactions become ``nontrivial'' even in higher dimensions, similarly to the four-dimensional gauged NJL model. Such a nontriviality holds only in the restricted region of the critical line (``nontrivial window'') with the gauge coupling larger than a non-vanishing value (``marginal triviality (MT)'' point), in contrast to the four-dimensional case where such a nontriviality holds for all regions of the critical line except for the pure NJL point. In the nontrivial window the renormalized effective potential yields a nontrivial interaction which is conformal invariant. The exisitence of the nontrivial window implies ``cutoff insensitivity'' of the physics prediction in spite of the ultraviolet dominance of the dynamics. In the formal limit D -> 4, the nontrivial window coincides with the known condition of the nontriviality of the four-dimensional gauged NJL model, $9/(2N_c) < N_f - N_c < 9/2 N_c$.

Generalized Weinberg Sum Rules in Deconstructed QCD

Recently, Son and Stephanov have considered an "open moose" as a possible dual model of a QCD-like theory of chiral symmetry breaking. In this note we demonstrate that although the Weinberg sum rules are satisfied in any such model, the relevant sums converge very slowly and in a manner unlike QCD. Further, we show that such a model satisfies a set of generalized sum rules. These sum rules can be understood by looking at the operator product expansion for the correlation function of chiral currents, and correspond to the absence of low-dimension gauge-invariant chiral symmetry breaking condensates. These results imply that, regardless of the couplings and F-constants chosen, the open moose is not the dual of any QCD-like theory of chiral symmetry breaking. We also show that the generalized sum rules can be "solved", leading to a compact expression for the difference of vector- and axial-current correlation functions. This expression allows for a simple formula for the S parameter (L_10), which implies that S is always positive and of order one in any (unitary) open linear moose model. Therefore the S parameter is positive and order one in any "Higgsless model" based on the continuum limit of a linear moose regardless of the warping or position-dependent gauge-coupling chosen.

Topped MAC with extra dimensions?

We perform the most attractive channel (MAC) analysis in the top mode standard model with TeV-scale extra dimensions, where the standard model gauge bosons and the third generation of quarks and leptons are put in D(=6,8,10,...) dimensions. In such a model, bulk gauge couplings rapidly grow in the ultraviolet region. In order to make the scenario viable, only the attractive force of the top condensate should exceed the critical coupling, while other channels such as the bottom and tau condensates should not. We then find that the top condensate can be the MAC for D=8, whereas the tau condensation is favored for D=6. The analysis for D=10 strongly depends on the regularization scheme. We predict masses of the top (m_t) and the Higgs (m_H), m_t=172-175 GeV and m_H=176-188 GeV for D=8, based on the renormalization group for the top Yukawa and Higgs quartic couplings with the compositeness conditions at the scale where the bulk top condenses. The Higgs boson in such a characteristic mass range will be immediately discovered in H -> WW^(*)/ZZ^(*) once the LHC starts.

Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from Extra Dimensions

We study the dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking (DEWSB) in the $D (=6,8,...)$-dimensional bulk with compactified extra dimensions. We identify the critical binding strength for triggering the DEWSB, based on the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation. In the top mode standard model with extra dimensions, where the standard model gauge bosons and the third generation of quarks and leptons are put in the bulk, we analyze the most attractive channel (MAC) by using renormalization group equations (RGEs) of (dimensionless) bulk gauge couplings and determine the effective cutoff where the MAC coupling exceeds the critical value. We then find that the top-condensation can take place for D=8. Combining RGEs of top-Yukawa and Higgs-quartic couplings with compositeness conditions, we predict the top mass, $m_t=173-180$ GeV, and the Higgs mass, $m_H=181-211$ GeV, for D=8, where we took the universal compactification scale $1/R = 1-100$ TeV.

pi+ pi0 Mass Difference in the Hidden Local Symmetry: A Dynamical Origin of Little Higgs

We calculate pi+ pi0 mass difference $Δm_π^2 \equiv m_{π^+}^2 -m_{π^0}^2$ in the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) model, based on the Wilsonian matching and Wilsonian renormalization-group equations. Even without a1 meson the result agrees well with the experiment in sharp contrast to the conventional approach where the a1 meson plays a crucial role. For large Nf QCD, there arises a large hierarchy between $Δm_π^2$ and the pi decay constant $F_π^2$, $Δm_π^2/F_π^2 \ll 1$, near the critical point where the chiral symmetry gets restored as the vector manifestation and the HLS model becomes a little Higgs model with two sites and two links, with the dynamically generated gauge coupling of the composite rho becoming vanishingly small.

Calculating the pion decay constant from α_s(M_Z)

We revisit the analysis of the improved ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation for the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in QCD with emphasizing the importance of the scale ambiguity. Previous calculation done so far naively used one-loop MSbar coupling in the improved ladder SD equation without examining the scale ambiguity. As a result, the calculated pion decay constant f_πwas less than a half of its experimental value f_π=92.4MeV once the QCD scale is fixed from the high energy coupling α_s(M_Z). In order to settle the ambiguity in a proper manner, we adopt here in the present paper the next-to-leading-order effective coupling instead of a naive use of the MSbar coupling. The pion decay constant f_πis then calculated from high energy QCD coupling strength α_s(M_Z)=0.1172 \pm 0.0020. Within the Higashijima-Miransky approximation, we obtain f_π=85--106MeV depending on the value of α_s(M_Z) which agrees well with the experimentally observed value f_π=92.4MeV. The validity of the improved ladder SD equation is therefore ascertained more firmly than considered before.

Top Mode Standard Model with Extra Dimensions

We critically examine a version of the top mode standard model recently cast in extra dimensions by Arkani-Hamed, Cheng, Dobrescu, and Hall, based on the (improved) ladder Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation for the D-(=6,8-)-dimensional gauge theories. We find that the bulk QCD cannot have larger coupling beyond the non-trivial ultraviolet (UV) fixed point, the existence of which is supported by a recent lattice analysis. The coupling strength at the fixed point is evaluated by using the one-loop renormalization group equation. It is then found that, in a version with only the third family (as well as the gauge bosons) living in the D-dimensional bulk, the critical (dimensionless) coupling for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking to occur is larger than the UV fixed point of the bulk QCD coupling for D=6, while smaller for D=8. We further find that the improved ladder SD equation in D dimensions has an approximate scale-invariance due to the running of the coupling and hence has an essential-singularity scaling of the ``conformal phase transition,'' similar to Miransky scaling in the four-dimensional ladder SD equation with a nonrunning coupling. This essential-singularity scaling can resolve the fine-tuning even when the cutoff (``string scale'') is large. Such a theory has a large anomalous dimension γ_m=D/2 - 1 and is expected to be free from the flavor-changing-neutral-current problem as in walking technicolor for D=4. Furthermore, the induced bulk Yukawa coupling becomes finite even at infinite cutoff limit (in the formal sense), similarly to the renormalizability of the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. Comments are made on the use of the ``effective'' coupling, which includes finite renormalization effects, instead of the \bar{MS} running coupling in the improved ladder SD equation.

Top Quark Condensate in Grand Unified Theories

We propose a top quark condensate scenario embedded in grand unified theories (GUTs), stressing that the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model has a nontrivial continuum limit (``renormalizability'') under certain condition which is actually satisfied in all sensible GUTs with simple group. The top quark mass prediction in this scenario is shown to be insensitive to the ultraviolet cutoff $Λ$ thanks to the ``renormalizability''. We also discuss a possibility to reduce the top mass prediction in this scenario.

CP Violation via $ρω$ Interference

We consider $B^{\pm,0} \to ρ^0(ω)h^{\pm,0}$, where $ρ^0(ω)$ decays to $π^+π^-$ and $h$ is any hadronic final state, such as $π$ or $K$. We find a large direct CP asymmetry in B-meson decays via $ρω$ interference. A possible method to determine weak phases, such as $ϕ_{2,3}$, is discussed. The experimental feasibility is also shown.

Direct CP violation of B meson via rho-omega interference

We investigate $B^{\pm,0}\rightarrow ρ^0 (ω)h^{\pm,0}$, where $ρ^0 (ω)$ decays to $π^+π^-$ and $h$ is any hadronic final states, such as $π$ or $K$. We find large direct $CP$ asymmetries via $ρ-ω$ interference. A possible determination of the weak phases, such as $ϕ_2={\rm arg}((V_{ud}V^*_{ub})/(V_{td}V^*_{tb}))$ and $ϕ_3={\rm arg}((V_{us}V^*_{ub})/(V_{ts}V^*_{tb}))$, is also discussed. We show the feasibility to detect the CP asymmetries in these channels by assuming an asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider experiment. $10^{9}$ $B\bar B$ events are required for the detection of this effect.

$WW$ resonance and chiral Lagrangian

We discuss the sensitivity of the $e^+ e^- \rightarrow W^+ W^-$ cross section at a future $e^+ e^-$ collider with $\sqrt{s}=500$GeV to the non-decoupling effects of a techni-$ρ$ like vector resonance. The non-decoupling effects are parametrized by the chiral coefficients of the electroweak chiral perturbation theory. We define renormalization scale independent chiral coefficients by subtracting the Standard Model loop contributions. We also estimate the size of the decoupling effects of the techni-$ρ$ resonance by using a phenomenological Lagrangian including the vector resonance.
