Uniqueness for inverse problem of determining fractional orders for time-fractional advection-diffusion equations

We consider initial boundary value problems of time-fractional advection-diffusion equations with the zero Dirichlet boundary value $\partial_t^α u(x,t) = -Au(x,t)$, where $-A = \sum}{i,j=1}^d \partial_i(a_{ij}(x)\partial_j) + \sum{j=1}^d b_j(x)\partial_j + c(x)$. We establish the uniqueness for an inverse problem of determining an order $α$ of fractional derivatives by data $u(x_0,t)$ for $0<t<T$ at one point $x_0$ in a spatial domain $\OOO$. The uniqueness holds even under assumption that $\OOO$ and $A$ are unknown, provided that the initial value does not change signs and is not identically zero. The proof is based on the eigenfunction expansions of finitely dimensional approximating solutions, a decay estimate and the asymptotic expansions of the Mittag-Leffler functions for large time.

Simultaneous uniqueness for multiple parameters identification in a fractional diffusion-wave equation

This article deals with the uniqueness in identifying multiple parameters simultaneously in the one-dimensional time-fractional diffusion-wave equation of fractional time-derivative order $\in (0,2)$ with the zero Robin boundary condition. Using the Laplace transform and a transformation formula, we prove the uniqueness in determining an order of the fractional derivative, a spatially varying potential, initial values and Robin coefficients simultaneously by boundary measurement data, provided that all the eigenmodes of an initial value do not vanish. Furthermore, for another formulation of inverse problem with input source term in place of initial value, by the uniqueness in the case of non-zero initial value and a Duhamel principle, we prove the simultaneous uniqueness in determining multiple parameters for a time-fractional diffusion-wave equation.

On the maximum principle for the multi-term fractional transport equation

In this paper, we prove a maximum principle for the general multi-term space-time-fractional transport equation and apply it for establishing uniqueness of solution to an initial-boundary-value problem for this equation. We also derive some comparison principles for solutions to the initial-boundary-value problems with different problem data. Finally, we present a maximum principle for the Cauchy problem for a time-fractional transport equation on an unbounded domain.

Decay rates and initial values for time-fractional diffusion-wave equations

We consider a solution $u(\cdot,t)$ to an initial boundary value problem for time-fractional diffusion-wave equation with the order $α\in (0,2) \setminus \{ 1\}$ where $t$ is a time variable. We first prove that a suitable norm of $u(\cdot,t)$ is bounded by $\frac{1}{t^α}$ for $0<α<1$ and $\frac{1}{t^{α-1}}$ for $1<α<2$ for all large $t>0$. Moreover we characterize initial values in the cases where the decay rates are faster than the above critical exponents. Differently from the classical diffusion equation $α=1$, the decay rate can give some local characterization of initial values. The proof is based on the eigenfunction expansions of solutions and the asymptotic expansions of the Mittag-Leffler functions for large time.

Uniqueness for fractional nonsymmetric diffusion equations and an application to an inverse source problem

In this paper, we discuss the uniqueness for solution to time-fractional diffusion equation $\partial_t^α(u-u_0) + Au=0$ with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, where an elliptic operator $-A$ is not necessarily symmetric. We prove that the solution is identically zero if its normal derivative with respect to the operator $A$ vanishes on an arbitrary small part of the spatial domain over a time interval. The proof is based on the Laplace transform and the spectral decomposition, and is valid for more general time-fractional partial differential equations, including those involving non symmetric operators.

Logarithmic Stability for Coefficients Inverse Problem of Coupled Wave Equations

This paper investigates the identification of two coefficients in a coupled hyperbolic system with an observation on one component of the solution. Based on the the Carleman estimate for coupled wave equations a logarithmic type stability result is obtained by measurement data only in a suitably chosen subdomain under the assumption that the coefficients are given in a neighborhood of some subboundary.

Logarithmic stability of parabolic Cauchy problems

The uniqueness of parabolic Cauchy problems is nowadays a classical problem and since Hadamard \cite{Ha} these kind of problems are known to be ill-posed and even severely ill-posed. Until now there are only few partial results concerning the quantification of the stability for parabolic Cauchy problems. In the present article, we bring the complete answer to this issue, provided that the space domain has finite diameter with respect to the geodesic distance and assuming that solutions are sufficiently smooth.

Inverse parabolic problems of determining functions with one spatial-component independence by Carleman estimate

For an initial-boundary value problem for a parabolic equation in the spatial variable $x=(x_1,.., x_n)$ and time $t$, we consider an inverse problem of determining a coefficient which is independent of one spatial component $x_n$ by extra lateral boundary data. We apply a Carleman estimate to prove a conditional stability estimate for the inverse problem. Also we prove similar results for the corresponding inverse source problem.

Global Lipschitz stability for inverse problems for radiative transport equations

We consider inverse problems of determining coefficients or time independent factors of source terms in radiative transport equations by means of Carleman estimate. We establish global Lipschitz stability results with an additional condition which requires some strict positivity for initial value or given factor of source, but we need not any extra conditions on domains of velocities, which is the main achievement of this article compared with the existing work by Machida and Yamamoto ({\it Inverse Problems} {\bf 30} 035010, 2014). The proof relies on a Carleman estimate with a piecewise linear weight function according to the partition of the velocity domain.

Stability inequality for a semilinear elliptic inverse problem

We establish a logarithmic stability inequality for the inverse problem of determining the non linear term, appearing in a semilinear BVP, from the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map (abbreviated to DtN map in the rest of this text). Our result can be seen as a stability inequality for an earlier uniqueness result by Isakov and Sylvester [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 47 (1994), 1403-1410].

Backward problems in time for fractional diffusion-wave equation

In this article, for a time-fractional diffusion-wave equation $\pppa u(x,t) = -Au(x,t)$, $0<t<T$ with fractional order $α\in (1,2)$, we consider the backward problem in time: determine $u(\cdot,t)$, $0<t<T$ by $u(\cdot,T)$ and $\ppp_tu(\cdot,T)$. We proved that there exists a countably infinite set $Λ\in (0,\infty)$ with a unique accumulation point $0$ such that the backward problem is well-posed for $T \not\in Λ$.

Well-posedness for the backward problems in time for general time-fractional diffusion equation

In this article, we consider a partial differential equation with Caputo time-derivative: $\partial_t^αu + Au = F$ where $0< α< 1$ and $u$ satisfies the zero Dirichlet boundary condition. For a non-symmetric elliptic operator $-A$ of the second order and given $F$, we prove the well-posedness for the backward problem in time and our result generalizes the existing results assuming that $A$ is symmetric. The key is the perturbation argument and the completeness of the generalized eigenfunctions of the elliptic operator $A$.

Well-posedness for weak and strong solutions of non-homogeneous initial boundary value problems for fractional diffusion equations

We study the well-posedness for initial boundary value problems associated with time fractional diffusion equations with non-homogenous boundary and initial values. We consider both weak and strong solutions for the problems. For weak solutions, we introduce a new definition of solutions which allows to prove the existence of solution to the initial boundary value problems with non-zero initial and boundary values and non-homogeneous terms lying in some arbitrary negative-order Sobolev spaces. For strong solutions, we introduce an optimal compatibility condition and prove the existence of the solutions. We introduce also some sharp conditions guaranteeing the existence of solutions with more regularity in time and space.

Inverse moving source problem for fractional diffusion(-wave) equations: Determination of orbits

This paper is concerned with the inverse problem on determining an orbit of the moving source in a fractional diffusion(-wave) equations in a connected bounded domain of $\mathbb R^d$ or in the whole space $\mathbb R^d$. Based on a newly established fractional Duhamel's principle, we derive a Lipschitz stability estimate in the case of a localized moving source by the observation data at $d$ interior points. The uniqueness for the general non-localized moving source is verified with additional data of more interior observations.

Unique continuation property with partial information for two-dimensional anisotropic elasticity systems

In this paper, we establish a novel unique continuation property for two-dimensional anisotropic elasticity systems with partial information. More precisely, given a homogeneous elasticity system in a domain, we investigate the unique continuation by assuming only the vanishing of one component of the solution in a subdomain. Using the corresponding Riemann function, we prove that the solution vanishes in the whole domain provided that the other component vanishes at one point up to its second derivatives. Further, we construct several examples showing the possibility of further reducing the additional information of the other component. This result possesses remarkable significance in both theoretical and practical aspects because the required data is almost halved for the unique determination of the whole solution.

Quantum efficiency enhancement of bialkali photocathodes by an atomically thin layer on substrates

We report quantum efficiency (QE) enhancements in accelerator technology relevant antimonide photocathodes (K2CsSb) by interfacing them with atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) crystal layers. The enhancement occurs in a reflection mode, when a 2D crystal is placed in between the photocathodes and optically reflective substrates. Specifically, the peak QE at 405 nm (3.1 eV) increases by a relative 10 percent, while the long wavelength response at 633 nm (2.0 eV) increases by a relative 36 percent on average and up to 80 percent at localized hot spot regions when photocathodes are deposited onto graphene coated stainless steel. There is a similar effect for photocathodes deposited on hexagonal boron nitride monolayer coatings using nickel substrates. The enhancement does not occur when reflective substrates are replaced with optically transparent sapphire. Optical transmission, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) revealed that thickness, crystal orientation, quality and elemental stoichiometry of photocathodes do not appreciably change due to 2D crystal coatings. These results suggest optical interactions are responsible for the QE enhancements when 2D crystal sublayers are present on reflective substrates, and provide a pathway toward a simple method of QE enhancement in semiconductor photocathodes by an atomically thin 2D crystal on substrates.
